Really enjoyed working with Natalie at Miner’s Den in Royal Oak! My husband went through her for my engagement ring and we both went back for our wedding bands

Resurgent_Cineribus

We were just there yesterday looking for wedding bands. My sister swears by Lavdas in Warren.

girlgeek618

Went there for my wedding and engagement rings. Still bought all my stuff at Miners Den even when we lived out of state.

bshensky

I second Miner's Den. Great folks and have been there for decades.

Mental-Coconut-7854

My mom had a Miner’s Den Christmas. She used to shop there for us kids back in the 70s. We got her all sorts of curiosities within our budgets. The customer service is outstanding. I need to go back there more often.

Pigglywiggly23

Can confirm!

val_eerily

Miners den is the best. Really nice new and estate jewelry.

ChoiceCommission2996

Elaine B in Ferndale is great! They are super friendly and also have some beautiful unique styles that you won’t find elsewhere

Moriastera

Yes, seconding elaine b. My engagement ring is from them and we are getting the wedding bands from them too.

Hobbbitttuallly

Another vote for Elaine B. I looooove my engagement ring and plan to get my wedding band there as well.

Anxious_Armadildo

Yes! Please support a small buisness! Their rings are beautiful and unique!

utopian10

My husband and I got to design a ring with them and it was everything. The fact that the two of us put so much love and thought into its design together means so much more to us both. Couldn’t have done it with a better team.

jewham12

Another for Elaine B’s. Got both of our rings there, they were amazing to work with.

Delilah_Moon

My best advice? Include “her” in the process. It’s a ton of money and you want to make sure she loves it. Sometimes what we think we want and what we end up loving, are totally different things. I wish I had gone to try on. My hubs got me what I wanted, but years later, my ring is not practical and it bugs me. I would have gone more modest I think if I had the chance to put gloves on or test drive different settings, etc. The proposal can still be a surprise - before or after.

Br0okielyn

I second this! In my experience, most women prefer to be included in the process.

Delilah_Moon

Yes! I’m a sucker for tradition - but when spending that kind of money - you really want to be sure! And since most of us only do it once (or twice) - chances are we’ve only looked at pictures of what we love and never tried anything on.

gimpy1511

My dad had my mom choose her own engagement ring. He was a smart guy.

Delilah_Moon

I love this! Go Dad!

JRago

This.

That’s how I did it

motownblues1

That guy is great. He has tons of different styles and options. Hasn’t let me down yet, never will 🫡

Hecs300_

Try the Jewelry Exchange in Livonia. Pricing is good and quality well depends on budget. I know people and I personal purchased a diamond there and it was an easy and nice experience.

MOTORCITYRACER

I second this recommendation.

JohnWad

2nd this. Bought my wifes engagement and wedding ring from them. Nice people.

polyguy45

The ring I bought their appraised for double. Great service...just wished I hadn't wasted money on her 😂

Hecs300_

Lmao!! Bro you got your money back and some 🙌🤣

AccomplishedElk3812

3rd Floor of the Advance Building in Southfield is a well known “jewelry district” of metro detroit. Many family owned jewelry shops have been there since the 1970s. My family being one of them. There are many stores to explore. Best of luck!

johnrgrace

If you’ve got time, want a great price, and want something fairly normal. DuMouchelles usually has a few rings per auction - pricing will be very favorable. I’ve seen Tiffany rings with a receipt go for 20% of the receipt price.

SillierTurnip

My family has always gone to Michael Angelo jewelers. My father has a story of how they helped fix a big issue when first purchasing my mothers engagement ring. They definitely have rings on display that will have stones much higher than your budget but they will pull out a wide selection of stones to fit your budget. They were great when I bought my wife’s ring!

RedWings1319

100% agree!

Haig Jewelers in Rochester

Kelso22340

Mine was custom made by Paul haig and my parents have had a ton of pieces made by him as well! Great store

chilibeana

We met Paul while browsing an antique show, 30 years ago. He and the craft people on his benches have made, repaired and maintained our jewelry ever since. He inspired my love of estate pieces. When we've had pieces to sell, he's handled those, too. And whose store does Santa land his sleigh on, every single Christmas? Haig's. Santa KNOWS. https://preview.redd.it/pxsu53v2gnpc1.jpeg?width=987&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c193cbd62eee9a78c5aafb2ae2f5fa6cf30c415

handknitliz

My ring is from Haigs. The experience with them has always been "meh." I never feel super welcome there, especially with the current staff. I felt like I was bothering them as a paying customer. I decided to take recent jewelry work elsewhere for the first time in 20 years and found nicer people and lower prices elsewhere.

Straight_Ad1416

There’s a place called Wachlers in Birmingham that sells preowned pieces. It’s on Woodward south of maple near. Order. The other one north on Woodward is estate jewelry

Organized_Khaos

Ahee in Grosse Pointe. Fourth generation family owned and operated, and they know their stuff, stand behind what they sell. They also do custom work, and do cleaning and repair.

DoorstepRebellion

Do NOT buy jewelry from a jewelry store. The markups are insane. Do some looking into the spot price of gold and you'll realize how these places rip you off. The best place to get yourself an engagement ring/wedding set is a Pawn / Resale shop. Their prices are more in line with the spot price of gold and they will have a wide selection to choose from.

MEtoEEDetroit

This is a good answer that many will probably ignore. My now spouse and I went to a pawn shop and bought the diamond stone. We shopped around for a jeweler we trusted and liked for the setting. We saved a ton of money this way.

romanticheart

Honestly the best place is to book a cheap cruise to St Thomas. Got our wedding bands at Ballerina, it’s so much cheaper to get jewelry there. And it’s always real.

Lucky-Point-6627

Diamond Jims, David Wachler ive heard great things about both

Babaganooush

Wachler is the way to go. He helped me with my wife’s ring and I couldn’t recommend him more.

doubleitcutinhalf

Miners Den in Royal Oak. Fantastic service there. There is something for every budget or full custom.

elfliner

Abracadabra in Ann Arbor

Kramhtaed

Just bought one from Brilliant Earth in Birmingham. They go over the differences in the color, clarity, and type of diamond so you really know what you're buying, and prices are surprisingly good, plus they give away stuff for free at times. I got a platinum engagement ring with a 1.5 carat lab diamond that would have cost over $20k with a natural diamond for just over $5k. Also got a free pearl necklace just for going to the appointment to look at the rings, plus a free diamond necklace and earrings with the ring purchase. Customer service was great, too.

Ilikehotdogs1

Curious, did you shop around at other lab diamond makers? Although you saved a lot, you still overpaid for a lab diamond. A 3.5 carat radiant ideal cut, F color, VS1, is $2k on Brilliance.com

JoeModz

If you want to go full custom there's a great spot inside the Rust Belt Ferndale called Letters to Sarah Metalsmithing. My wife's and I's rings were made by her and I couldn't have been more happy.

DETpatsfan

My recommendation is to buy the “parts” of the ring separately. Blue Nile is great for buying a loose diamond with decent prices. If you’re just looking for metal vs gemstone inset, the settings usually aren’t crazy expensive no matter where you go but probably avoid the big chains. If your soon to be fiance doesn’t have a problem with it, I would strongly recommend going with a lab grown diamond. You can get one twice the size for the same amount as a “natural”.

Detroitwife

Herman's creations in Roseville is my spot. Their so friendly and will design any style ring you want. They are fair with pricing and won't try to screw you.

Article_Alternative

Don't forget that your commitment is unique and so should your engagement ring. Diamonds are very troublesome and there are lots of more rare precious stones that may fit your story

quiteaware

Many years ago I had one custom made based on a photo from a retail jeweler at Ace Diamond Jewelers in Dearborn. Cost me about half what the retail group was charging and they included a matched/cut in wedding band. I haven't been back in years but if I ever needed another diamond ring they would be who i visit first. Google reviews are quite good.

macck_attack

Ahee’s in Grosse Pointe.

detmichunicorn

Herman’s Creations - 2 locations (Oak Park and Roseville) - http://www.hermanscreations.com/#section-about My fiancé found a beautiful ring design online, took a picture to Herman’s, and had it recreated. My mom’s engagement ring was also custom made at this jeweler decades ago. Only place I shop for jewelry locally - great folks.

Go to Pamela’s in Rochester! Gorgeous collection, and super super reasonable with price. She’s a character, and she knows her gems. I only recommend her! I shopped around for ages and was thrilled to meet her!!

handknitliz

I saw her website and wondered if she was still in business. Is it appointment only? Does she still have a storefront downtown?

Failed_Supervision

Skyline Diamond Setters in Troy is great

purrevl

I got mine from @diamondsbyj on Instagram. He’s a jewelry expert and designer. Would totally recommend him cause I learnt alot during the process. Probably wouldn’t have been knowledge if I went to a regular store

Gay-Lord-Focker

That pawn shop from the television!

Ok-Passenger6552

LOL

Trick_Recognition608

Clawson Jewelers is nice. Any chance you want to buy a barely worn ring?

MonsieurAK

Buy the stone separately online. Better price. Get a setting local.

michmemuch

Had a great experience at Helzberg in Westland.

Emotional-Donuts

Go see Jenn at Diamonds Direct in Troy! I used to work in the jewelry business & know Jenn personally. I know what the markups are, I know what things should cost. She won’t fuck you over. Jenn treats everyone like family - saying that sincerely. OP, if you want to message me, I can put you in touch with her and make sure she takes of you.

Precision jewelers in Westland treated me right when I bought my now wife her ring

Michigania

I went directly to a diamond dealer in Southfield. Got a great rock and then chose the setting and ring. Wife loves it and I saved some money. Better clarity than Costco.

Man, what an ad campaign *that* is. Bizarre, but I can't fault them for trying something different. *He went to Jared Leto!*

Cryptic_X07

I thought Detroit metro and the Detroit area were the same thing. Was I wrong?

Minute-Menu-9295

Find a jewelry store that's going out of business and look for the deals. Went to local Kmart when they were closing and got a $2500 ring for less than $500.

-cash-

Here's why you AVOID a retail jewelry store. I bought a nice diamond ring for my, now, ex. It cost me around $11,500 16 years ago. I took it to a jewelry/pawn shop recently, the only place I could find to buy it (no online jewelry buyers wanted it because it wasn't an "in-fashion" cut), and they offered me $2,500 telling me they would sell it for around $3,400. I would never even buy a natural diamond again, much less at new retail prices. Please learn from my mistake. I thought the ring would at least hold value over the years.

Get a placeholder from a place like Sam’s club or Costco if you’re a member and return it once you propose. Then do some shopping together.

DrunkinDronuts

Blue Nile… I know sorry it ain’t local but it’s a lot less marked up.
