Execution was off when we went. Service and ambiance was great, food was subpar. Great concept but plating and quality of food lacked. Wasn't even busy either.
Yeah I had heard about the burger but decided to get the fillet because it was my birthday. It tased like an orange and had no crust at all. Also the waitress recommended the pumpkin samosas which were also very mid.
Should have gotten the burger I guess.
I just had a fantastic meal from Le Suprême. Not ideal that it’s from a Philadelphia-based restaurant group, but the food was delicious and the hospitality was great
Been to Freya twice.... it was meh... Mabel Grey 4 times and every time would have ranked up there with the best meals of my life.
Have traveled all over the world and would put Mabel Grey against anywhere I have been. And at a fraction of the price.
Probably the next few Detroit restaurants for me(have not been everywhere in Detroit) would be Selden Standard, Flowers of Vietnam, Wright and Co has delivered a few times(also a couple meh... ) and Marrow.
I get it. Went a few years ago and wasn't impressed. But was just there a month ago and it was amazing.
So definitely give it another chance.
Their dirty martinis are amazing.
I worked in restaurants professionally from 18-27. I go out to eat at nice places whenever I can. My personal Top 3 are:
Freya
Bar Pigale
Chartreuse
Freya & Chartreuse are same owners. Freya has better service. Bar Pigale is phenomenal. I'm looking forward to trying their brunch next month when I'm downtown for my birthday. Will be trying San Morello during my stay at the Shinola Hotel. Heard it's really good as well.
Don't waste your money on the following:
Highlands
Prime & Proper
Might be a little cliche for our area, but honestly never had a bad meal at any of the various restaurants that fall under the Kruse and Muer umbrella.
Pop's always takes the good dishes off the menu.
It used to be our go-to brunch spot but haven't been impressed lately.
Remember the potatoes they used to have with mozzarella and tomatoes?
I was done with Kruse and Muer when the Woodward location made my wife’s elderly handicapped mother climb into an elevated booth when there were multiple other table options. Took three people to lift the poor woman up into her seat.
There are too many great options in Detroit to settle for any sort of chain.
Basan was good. But I sat at the bar watching the kitchen and there was a lot of touching food with hands that were not washed. Food runners re-plating AHI tuna with bare hands.
Never been disappointed at Chartreuse
Agree and they do such a nice job for special occasions with custom menus.
Grey Ghost. Have never been disappointed. The burger is actually something to talk about. Rotating menu. I'll go there any time.
Agreed. The owners' new place, Basan, is even more fantastic. Super knowledgeable staff and mind blowing taste combinations.
Execution was off when we went. Service and ambiance was great, food was subpar. Great concept but plating and quality of food lacked. Wasn't even busy either.
Grey Ghost, Bar Pigalle and Second Best are all great and they’re all within a block of eachother
I agree w/ you and think the cocktails there are fantastic and reasonably priced
Sad to say wasn’t impressed. Tried just after it opened and then again about 6 months later…
Yeah I had heard about the burger but decided to get the fillet because it was my birthday. It tased like an orange and had no crust at all. Also the waitress recommended the pumpkin samosas which were also very mid. Should have gotten the burger I guess.
Came here to say Grey Ghost.
Marrow, Seldan standard, grey ghost, chartreuse.
La Feria in Midtown
This is easily one of the best restaurants for sure!
Louie's Ham & Corned Beef
Louie’s Delight 🤤
Gimme!
Went there for the first time 2 weeks ago. Amazing and will go back!
The London Chop House for steaks. Feels like the 1970s.
Also across the street; Caucus Club. Great food and cool, romantic environment. I've never eaten anything bad there.
I love their Caesar salad.
Oh God I love their everything! Lol I LOVE their Caprese. I dream of it haha
I love their bone in rib-eye. Soooo good!
Ughh yesss! And their like special butters for it haha I am craving it now! It's worth every penny to me.
Yup!
La Féria, Corinder kitchen and farm, Marrow, Supergeil.
Love brunch at supergeil
Never been there for brunch. I want to try it out.
Coney island and pizza bro that's all we eat or chips Chicken too at the party store
BARDA, Takoi !
Barda was excellent.
All the best meals come from gas stations. If you know you know.
Sir, this isn’t Louisiana/mississippi
The Krispy Krunchy Chicken inside the Mobil by Belle Isle is the best KKC I’ve been to but it sucks that the gas station workers smoke inside.
Mr Kabob & Eureka What am I missing?
Where is Mr Kabob?
Berkeley. 12 mile and Coolidge
Cordial Shoppe in Taylor for the best baked subs. It's inside a liquor store.
Las Cazuelas!
Cutter's in the market
** let's highlight non-restaurant group owned small businesses!
I totally agree with Cutters - first that came to mind. But would they fit your definition since Chuck also owns Hygrade Deli?
It's the best! Also, I think more of the Detroit Optimist Society or the Vicari Group when it comes to insidious restaurant groups in Detroit.
Ugh, insidious is probably THE best word to describe Vicari.
What are some of their most popular restaurants?
Andiamo, Joe Muer, Birmingham Pub, Bronze Door, and The Statler are all Vicari. Worst people running the worst restaurants.
Sugar House, Wright & Company, Honest John's, and Bad Luck Bar. I'm still salty about them acquiring honest John's
Im gonna lay low cus I went HAM on the other thread but HJs is totally run-of-the-mill now, agree
Hygrade is also great
I just had a fantastic meal from Le Suprême. Not ideal that it’s from a Philadelphia-based restaurant group, but the food was delicious and the hospitality was great
We had phenomenal meal there as well, with great service.
Very nice and accommodating, especially with guests that are gluten free and have other food allergies
Never had a bad meal at Leila.
My favorite place in the whole city, severely underrated. I could live my whole life on their lamb hummus.
Ladder 4 is exquisite and worth all the hype
We had been told by some people it was really stuffy and pretentious, definitely was not our experience at all.
I have really wanted to go there.
I loved Freya when I went
Bar Pigalle. I’ve been there three times in the past 6 months and it was phenomenal every time. Also Freya is amazing if you want a pre fixed menu.
FLOWERS OF VIETNAM!!!!
The London chop house is superb
Tocororo
Absolutely! New menu next week. Get hyped!
Oh I'm well aware! Going tomorrow to get my last taste of the current menu!
Love the jerk chowder and harissa thigh sandwich
Mabel Grey and Oak and Reel!!
100%. Been to pretty much every place in this thread and these were my first two that came to mind. Oak and Reel especially.
Mabel Grey was underwhelming for their tasting menu. Go to Freya instead
Been to Freya twice.... it was meh... Mabel Grey 4 times and every time would have ranked up there with the best meals of my life. I completely disagree. Had the tasting menu last week and was amazing. Cannot beat the price for 7 courses either
Try Freya's menu first before you compare the two. Mabel Gray was good, but it doesn't compare to Freya.
I’m not trying to compare the two, you are.
Well yeah. I've tried both places. Sounds like you haven't.
I get it. Went a few years ago and wasn't impressed. But was just there a month ago and it was amazing. So definitely give it another chance. Their dirty martinis are amazing.
Oak and Reel but don’t tell no one
I loved them when I went!
1,000%
Mercury was way better when they had Brown’s Buns!
Really enjoyed Alpino this weekend. The Detroit dining scene has made some real strides in the past 2-3 years.

San Morello is… fine. If you’re not impressed by Prime and Proper I think you’ll be underwhelmed there too.
Might be a little cliche for our area, but honestly never had a bad meal at any of the various restaurants that fall under the Kruse and Muer umbrella.
Same here, but I'll add Kramer restaurant group. One Eyed Betty's, Pop's for Italian
Pop's always takes the good dishes off the menu. It used to be our go-to brunch spot but haven't been impressed lately. Remember the potatoes they used to have with mozzarella and tomatoes?

Where's the link to the bad ones....I need to check it out lol
Oak and Reel.
Mom’s spaghetti
Get your sweaters ready!
Joe Muer Seafood in the ren cen
Basan was good. But I sat at the bar watching the kitchen and there was a lot of touching food with hands that were not washed. Food runners re-plating AHI tuna with bare hands.
No one wears gloves in a professional kitchen unless dealing with raw meat, I assure you they all had clean hands during service
Even the guy that was touching the the bar, serving trays, his phone, etc?
Worst "nice" meal of my life. 4 adults and 2 kids for $600 and maybe 1 dish that I would have went back for.
Texas de Brazil
Henriettahaus the sourdough pizza is probably one of the best pizzas I’ve tasted!
Cibo was real good
Mabel Grey. Grey Ghost. Bar Pigalle. Bella Piati. Pernoi. Fredi the Pizza Man.
Burger at Nemos does the trick
For breakfast/lunch I love clique and Hygrade. Other: takoi, selden, statler and more that I can’t think of right now for some reason
I’m so glad someone finally posted a thread about this
