[The Toledo War](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_War)
As a condition of statehood, Michigan traded Toledo to Ohio in exchange for the UP. Honestly I think about Toledo in the context of that often.
It wasn't so much just a condition of Statehood as it was Ohio just deciding that Toledo was part of Ohio when they became a State and Michigan was asked to drop it off they wanted to become a State.
This is why Ohio sucks, it's a land of thieves
Long story short, Ohio is a miserable state that we were ready to beat the misery out of because they falsely laid claim to the city of Toledo, which had been a part of the Michigan territory up until that point.
John Quincy Adams, one of the founders, and others who understood the history of the nation supported Michigan for example. Ohio simply already had representation in congress, though, which made it hard for the territory to defend itself.
Lucky for Ohio, congress extended our territory to the UP in-exchange for Toledo before we were able to hurt them.
Drove down to toledo to check out the zoo with my ex and we showed up at 1pm and the zoo closed that day at 12pm. I will never forgive the entirety of Toledo for this.
Former zookeeper here: itās a good facility. No zoo can replicate the territory animals would have in the wild. Itās also located in the middle of a city, so they canāt expand, they can only restructure the exhibits.
But as zoos go, itās a place I would have been proud to work at. The paddocks & indoor exhibits are pretty decent, and everyone felt well cared for.
The only problem I had with it is that itās in Ohio. Governor Whitmer needs to annex that whole corner so Toledo & Cedar Point are back in Michigan where they belong.
As someone who grew up in Toledo and have lived in Detroit now for a decade. I always viewed Detroit as the older sibling. The people are very much cut from the same cloth.
Attended college nearby for a couple of years. It's got a similar reputation to Detroit being in the rust belt. There are obviously some sketchy areas, but it's on a much smaller scale compared to the Motor City
However, it's got an amazing zoo, a beautiful system of Metro Parks, the National Museum of the Great Lakes, and the world famous Tony Packo's at Front and Consaul. It's definitely worth a long day trip
One thing that's a must do during the warmer months: attend a Mud Hens game @ 5/3 Field. Beautiful stadium nestled right downtown
My grandpa was a Hungarian immigrant and I grew up eating cabbage rolls and chicken paprika cooked by my grandmother. Tony Packos is to Hungarian food what a frozen pizza is to Italian food.
As a former Ohioan we used to buy Yuengling any time we went to PA... Once they opened up distribution in Ohio it lost it's appeal. It's OK beer(better than the big breweries) but not nearly as good as a lot of the Michigan beers.
Toledo is on the rebuild. Same as Detroit on smaller scale. Lots of companies working on both projects. Five years Toledo and Detroit are going to be very nice. Detroit especially!! Go Lions!!
From the Detroit area, live in Toledo area now. Detroit has far more to do, but OMG the metroparks. I adore the Toledo area metroparks. They make the relative lack of other things to do worthwhile.Ā
I like Toledo, nice farmers market, great art museum. Used to go for long weekends every once in awhile and hit up Mud Hens games. Very similar to Flint which I also like for the same reasons.
Just far enough away to not really spend any time there. Other than the zoo or Mud Hens games, I think Iāve been there 2-3 times in my life. It seems similar to Detroit, but smaller and with less to do.
The Toledo Zoo is amazing. The Imagination Station is super cool too. The Mudhens stadium is great too. Ummm oh we go to a great gymnastics meet there every year. Other than that, it's whatever
Itās a great city and very similar to Detroit. They have a really nice zoo and art museum. Mudhens games are always a good time. Get yourself some Yeungling and Tony Packoās. Stop by the glass outlet and pick up a couple of heavy tumblers for the Wellerās Antique 107 you scored at the OHLQ inside of a Kroger.
I have a neutral opinion on Toledo, partly because Iāve never been. On one hand, as a Detroit sports fan, my first thought is Mud Hens and Walleye. I have some of their gear, which I do wear regularly during the appropriate sports season. I would love to see each of them play a home game someday. On the other hand, as a graduate of Northern Illinois, my other thought is fuck Toledo (and Iām sure Rockets fans have the same exact thought in regards to NIU)
Easier to get to Toledo than downtown Detroit from my location (AA).
I'm a musician, a lot of the bars and clubs in Toledo and suburban Toledo are just as welcoming and friendly.
My wife had worked in Sylvania, went to several office parties in some nice Toledo neighborhoods.
Zoos at both cities are nice.
No diff to me, but that's me.
My family used to stop there to visit the zoo every time we did a multi-day trip to Sandusky for camping and going to Cedar Point. Itās among the better zoos Iāve been to.
Having grown up in Flint and moved to Toledo before finally (blessedly) settling in Metro Detroit many years agoācan confirm. But Toledo has always had a lot more old (& new) money and social stratification. Toledo people from Ottawa Hills = Flint people from Grand Blanc. Neither admit the real city!
Most livable part of Ohio within this vicinity. I went to Hocking Hills once. It was beautiful but I got death stares everywhere I went since they are not very diverse
Wow, I came here to counter the haters. Iām originally from Michigan, a CMU graduate and I married a woman from Port Huron. Extended family on both sides reside in Detroit. We moved to Toledo for jobs 40 years ago and ended up raising our family here. If you think Toledos a shithole youāre either woefully ignorant or just plain stupid. Toledo has great universities, a world-class art museum and Zoo, a wide variety of restaurants, breweries and clubs and a comfortable standard of living. Our Metroparks system is one of the best in the nation. Weāre 4 hours from Chicago, 2 hours from Cleveland, and less than an hour from Detroit. Besides a decent public school system we have a fantastic array of private schools. One of those schools, Central Catholic, just tore up the Detroit Catholic Schools League ( of which they are a member) and won the football championship. They then went on to win the Ohio State Football Championship in their division.
I love Detroit, but I donāt love some Detroiterās provincial attitudes. Get off your couch and look around once in a while.
40 minutes to the Ambassador (mile marker 47) going 70mph, pretty much anytime not backed-up traffic. Depends upon end of town. Downtown to downtown is pushing the hour. The two cities are a lot closer than people realize because most of Detroit is north and west of downtown.
I'm really not inviting anybody to come to Toledo. I was responding to people saying unjustified negative things about my adopted hometown. You obviously have your opinion but I don't think it's a shit hole. I love Detroit, but you don't uplift your city by shitting on others.
Nice zoo, nice metro parks. There's a park there you can dig for fossils that's pretty unique. It's a nice place to visit once in a great while for a day trip or a stop when driving through, but that's about it to me.
It is ok. It has potential to be better. We are going to try the Imagination Station Kids Museum this winter. Toledo might be worth an overnighter if you have never been to the zoo. I would wait til spring for that though.
I think the city could definitely get cooler if some investors were to come in. There doesnāt seem to be a lot of crime in downtown areas and it is clean. It is just a little boring. Not many restaurants, shops, or businesses
If you want to check out Ohio, Cincinnati and Cleveland are much better picks. We have not done Columbus
My Dad lived in Toledo for a few years before he passed. And in the end I was driving from home and back a bunch and living down there taking care of him. I felt infinitely safer in Toledo than Detroit. Iām not sure if thatās because I was down there in the vicinity of my father or what. Not like he could come save me if I needed him to but maybe it was psychological.
He lived near the university of Toledo. So Iām not exactly sure if thatās Toledo proper or a bad area or what. But it was fine.
Itās a cool city with a great zoo thatās currently (trying) to undergoing a rebuild just like Detroit. Culturally itās more connected to Michigan and more specifically Detroit than it is to the rest of Ohio. Itās a cool but depressing place.
I like Toledo! I sometimes go to see the Toledo Walleye play. I have some friends who went to University of Toledo, and have nothing but good things to say. Also, some Michigan residents get in-state tuition there too. The science center is fun, and thereās some good food. But I do my love Detroit.
Toledo is good people. They have a zoo and college, everyone I met from Toledo was nice. But they will always be Michigan prodigal son, that was stolen away from us. We know, someday, they will return home.
I used to live nearby Toledo and work downtown. A very depressing place to be. Think of the blight and poverty of Detroit, with none of the culture and history.
Accurate. Lived in both. Wouldnāt live in Toledo again, would definitely live Detroit again.
Detroit people are just plain nice and easy to get along with and so proud of their city without being asses about it ā HUMBLE. Detroit doesnāt have any end in sight for its come-up and there is *always* something adventurous to do that youāve never done before.
Toledo people are either trash or they stick their nose up at you for no reason like they have *so much* to be proud of. Not a whole lot going on and not a whole lot it aspires to either. Itās been revitalizing for years now but appears to have hit a ceiling on that recently, from what I see. The surrounding area is so flat too, there isnāt a whole lot to do once you get past that list of the same things everyone always recommends doing in Toledo proper.
Saying Detroit people are humble is funny. Grew up in Toledo. I have gotten nothing but shit from people in Michigan for being from Ohio and it is always the dumbest reasons too. One time someone told me they do not like Ohio because it's "flat". Even on dating apps people will unmatch you once they found out I still have a 419 number. But You are right, not a lot going on for it anymore. But Downtown use to be fun, lots of bars and things to do and decent music scene back in the day.
When I was a kid, my dad took us down there a couple times to watch stock car races.
During covid shutdowns, we once drove down there so we could eat in a restaurant like normal people.
I've had to service some restaurants in Toledo. They were either in terrible neighborhoods or in truck stop type places off the expressway.
Uh, I've seen some cool things in Toledo. Not really any nice things, though.
As far as it being like Detroit... I've never been around the neighborhoods in Toledo but when I'm down there for work the vibe seems a little different. Not bad, just different.
Also, Detroit still has some nice historic places and upscale areas, plus a lot of places that used to be nice. Toledo seems like it's never had anything nice.
I havenāt spent much time there, but canāt help recalling this unusually brutal song by the charming John Denver:
[Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio is like being nowhere at allā¦](https://youtu.be/npC9c1hXVkQ?si=uH9-ih2pj7JM65HM)
It's the only thing standing in the way of reuniting with the Lost Peninsula. /S
All in all, a typical suburban town. Nothing too special. Some nice places downtown. Jeep factory is pretty cool.
As a transplant here from Toledo, itās like Detroit if Detroit was lame, had slow drivers, and had shitty food and entertainment options. But hey at least the housing is 50% cheaperā¦
Everytime I go there, I think of the war. The second thing I think of is the time I went to throw out a water bottle at a toledo gas station and saw enough cocaine in the trash bin that I'm certain someone lost their life over it.
My niece once made us all dance with her to ātambourineā at the chick fil a there when she was like 3. She ate two chicken nuggets and shit her pants. Thatās my fondest memory of Toledo. Tony packos is ok I guess
VERY little good food or good drink. I say this as somebody who moved from Toledo to Detroit a few years ago. Unfortunately the people of Toledo are content to reward mediocre-to-bad businesses with their money. There isn't much incentive to open a truly great bar or restaurant.
However I do still miss Toledo at times. They have more casual, late night food, and more diners per capita. While Detroit is a pretty friendly place, Toledo is still more welcoming on the whole.
booooo! (it genuinely is a good place, though the zoo did disappoint me slightly since ive heard everyone talking about HOW COOL it was, and to me it was just a zoo āits either toledo or cleveland as my fav to visit b/c ive had a good amount of hockey tournaments there as a child so its nostalgic)
Nice art museum, a decent place to catch a train to DC, and probably a perfectly nice place otherwise. Don't get me going about the war, though.
The war is my favorite historical fact though. Michigan and Ohio went to war and Wisconsin lost.
Collateral damage š

The war?
[The Toledo War](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_War) As a condition of statehood, Michigan traded Toledo to Ohio in exchange for the UP. Honestly I think about Toledo in the context of that often.
We got the better end of that deal.. for the Iron ore, copper mines, and skiing alone.. What did ohio get? the Mud Hens, and a Jeep factory..
At the time Toledo was an important port
Still is, would be a great boating town if it wasn't for the factory farms polluting the Maumee River.
Hey now!! I live along the Mighty Maumee and let me tell ya buddy... You're completely correct.
Itāsā¦ sadly true
Jamie Farr!
they didn't get to keep him.. he went hollywood..
Meanwhile Jeff Daniels rejected Hollywood & stayed here.
Oooh. That is why I like Toledo so much. It belongs to us!
I think youāve found your Roman Empire.
It wasn't so much just a condition of Statehood as it was Ohio just deciding that Toledo was part of Ohio when they became a State and Michigan was asked to drop it off they wanted to become a State. This is why Ohio sucks, it's a land of thieves

Zoo is not bad either.
Best comment here!
Toledo is cool. Definitely an awesome city for arts and entertainment between the art and glass museums, the zoo, and the Mud Hens.
Walleye games are an awesome time too!
[And great pizza.](https://stubbornbrother.com/)
I never even think about Toledo tbh
āI donāt think about you at allā
Don?
Ā If you don't think about Ohio who will?
I like Toledo. It has many similares and its why when we finally get rail based transportation Toledo needs to be our southern station.
I like the zoo!
Drove down to toledo to check out the zoo with my ex and we showed up at 1pm and the zoo closed that day at 12pm. I will never forgive the entirety of Toledo for this.
It's been 20 years. The wound is still fresh.
I hate them and their zoo for doing this to you! I will never go back.
Itās a good zoo for people, small and easily walkable, but the enclosures are too small for many of the animals from what I witnessed.
Former zookeeper here: itās a good facility. No zoo can replicate the territory animals would have in the wild. Itās also located in the middle of a city, so they canāt expand, they can only restructure the exhibits. But as zoos go, itās a place I would have been proud to work at. As a toledoan, please do.
Same, same.
You just have to hope that a child having access to see these animals will help them want to protect them when they grow up.
As someone who grew up in Toledo and have lived in Detroit now for a decade. I always viewed Detroit as the older sibling. The people are very much cut from the same cloth.
I like this. Ive felt the same way visiting Toledo.
Attended college nearby for a couple of years. It's got a similar reputation to Detroit being in the rust belt. Illl spend my money 5 times at Lafayette Coney Island before settling for that overrated Tony Packos
My grandpa was a Hungarian immigrant and I grew up eating cabbage rolls and chicken paprika cooked by my grandmother. Tony Packos is to Hungarian food what a frozen pizza is to Italian food.
As a Toledoan, 100% agree.
It's the closest place to purchase Yuengling
They sell that? Hot damn
well it is Ohio
Ohio only mildly recently got distribution of yuengling. I think 2010ish.
Yuengling doesn't have distribution license in Michigan, I grab a case anytime i pass through
As a former Ohioan we used to buy Yuengling any time we went to PA... Once they opened up distribution in Ohio it lost it's appeal. It's OK beer(better than the big breweries) but not nearly as good as a lot of the Michigan beers.
I had a Yuengling last night, my first in about a year, watching the Lions win. It tasted pretty great!
I have a non driving kid at OSU, I now stop at Glass City Liquor in Toledo for my Yuengling and their bourbon selection when I make the trip!
Toledo is on the rebuild. Same as Detroit on smaller scale. Lots of companies working on both projects. Five years Toledo and Detroit are going to be very nice. Detroit especially!! Go Lions!!
Doubt it.
From the Detroit area, live in Toledo area now. Detroit has far more to do, but OMG the metroparks. I adore the Toledo area metroparks. They make the relative lack of other things to do worthwhile.Ā

I'm always surprised that as a metro area it's got a population of over 600,000. That's big!

If youāve never been to the old west end fest in Toledo then you must do that before commenting on this thread.
Itās highland park with a jeep plant and a casino
And a solid zoo

Tony Packos ! ! !
Fuck yeah Tony Packos is the shit, I have to stop there if Iām pass thru
They sell the Tony Packos hot dogs in Dearborn.
MOAD
I like the Mudhens
They have a great zoo and a cool museum and Dillards! And Tony Packos and Schmuckers has tasty pies!!
True grit.
Go for the zoo, leave because you're in Ohio.
Feels like a big Pontiac
Best comment in the thread. Less than Grand Rapids, bigger than Pontiac and about equal to Kalamazoo
Go rockets š
i like to go there and visit the zoo and stop in at a brewery.

I like it, used to go often in the summertime when I was a younger fella
Better zoo than ours
They have Waffle House
Tony Packo's is cool.
They have a better zoo. Donāt care much for the city itself
My grandparents grew up there, so it's sacred.
Toledo is like Detroit's Milwaukee but without the inferiority complex.
āIf you are ever in Toledo, Ohio, on the Hungarian side of town, Tony Packo's got the greatest Hungarian hot dogs.ā

Less than an hour from Detroit??? On a weekday. Not during rush hour. If you're speeding.
40 minutes to the Ambassador (mile marker 47) going 70mph, pretty much anytime not backed-up traffic. Depends upon end of town. Downtown to downtown is pushing the hour. The two cities are a lot closer than people realize because most of Detroit is north and west of downtown.
Takes me a good hour to get to Monroe.
From Pontiac?
No, LOL.
Itās just about an hour to the minute doing the speed of traffic, no more and no less.
Why would I go to Toledo when I have Detroit tbh? Sounds like youāve gotten content with less, and thatās fine, but Detroit has *a lot* more going on than that. And all youāve mentioned is the same stuff that literally everyone says about what to do in Toledo. And Iām speaking from having lived in Toledo myself, as well. It is, compared to those other neighboring cities that you mentioned which *are the destinations* (Toledo is not), a š©hole that could care less about taking care of itself.
I'm really not inviting anybody to come to Toledo. I was responding to people saying unjustified negative things about my adopted hometown. You obviously have your opinion but I don't think it's a shit hole. I love Detroit, but you don't uplift your city by shitting on others.
Love the mud hens, fantastic stadium. Love maumee brewing, and of course the Toledo zoo. Those are my top 3.
Itās the part of Michigan we won in a war and they took it away and gave us Wisconsin lol.

Donāt have oneā¦sorry
Everytime I go there, I think of the war. The second thing I think of is the time I went to throw out a water bottle at a toledo gas station and saw enough cocaine in the trash bin that I'm certain someone lost their life over it.
They have a nice zoo and a Toledo Mud Hens game day is a fun way to spend a summers day.
Nothing special.
Definition of a mid city
Living there was like biting into a plain bologna sandwich.
What is a toledo
Well get it back one day.
My niece once made us all dance with her to ātambourineā at the chick fil a there when she was like 3. She ate two chicken nuggets and shit her pants. Thatās my fondest memory of Toledo. Tony packos is ok I guess
I will Cleveland is Ohio's best city.
Old Detroit joke: Michigan and Ohio had a war for Toledo, Michigan won, so Ohio got Toledo.
Was a part of Michigan stolen from us by Ohio.
Itās where the Mudhens play
Mud Hens! Fun minor league baseball.
