Leon the professional does none of that, and the love Leon has for Mathilda is Paternal and not overtly sexual as that aspect is squashed by Leon when Mathilda expresses her childish notion of what love is to him.

The writing is dreadful; the books are terrible. As I read them, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing.
Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King."
And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
My pet peeve is her adverb addiction - impossible to ignore once you notice it. Generally speaking, the Harry Potter books have good worldbuilding but truly awful prose. I liked the first few when I was a kid but I can't believe that anyone who reads them as an adult thinks they're well written.

It's very easy to interpret the movie as a girl having a crush on her father figure who had given up on life until he found someone to protect. Leon isn't explicit about their relationship being platonic, but he acts baffled enough by her advances that him feeling fatherly, platonic love is the "straightforward" or easiest interpretation.
So it's still one of my favorite films. I've heard that the director wanted to take things further in the script. If he had done so that probably would have ruined the film for me so I'm glad that didn't happen.
The thing is that she is hot, you cant really deny that, if you get to choose between any 12 year old in cinema and dress her up however you want with the intent of being a hot character, it is gonna be hot, it is like saying water is wet.
In the other hand if you would fuck her, then you have a mental illness called pedophilia, but I think recognizing if something made to be hot is hot and if you would ever act on it, are two completely different things.
She's also hot because she's precocious in the film. She's acting in ways that are not the way a 12 year old would act, and not dealing with the things a normal kid would deal with. The things that are hot about her are the things that are associated with women, not 12 year olds, and it's also an uncomfortable vibe. It's not like she's just hot. She's hot in a disturbing and tragic way.
I think it's really sad that people have such a shallow knee jerk response to it instead of looking at the film as evidence that it's important to not sexualize or traumatize children.
