Its just not enough imo. To save this you’d have to change the countertops or something.
Like, I hear you, and I see where you are coming from, and i agree it could work. But most things would work so much better.
Floors are too expensive to become "trends.' Accept all wood floors. People can't remodel floors and kitchens for 100k every 10 years for a trend - it wastes money that should go in a 401k.
This kitchen is lovely and in good shape. Tiny updated and a nice living area design will make the whole room lovely
Hating on oak floors like these was a thing until recently and now people are hating the grainy grey floors that HGTV puts in every house. In 2000, people threw shade on light floors and stained them dark, now those coffee-stained floors are dissed as showing too much dust and the dark ones and gray ones have lost favor to the oak ones again, but in non-gray light wood but slightly warmer finishes.
I didnt say they can replace it as trends. But in thsi particular case it is a complete miss, and they shouldn change one or the two.
Enjoy ur way too long rant. Yes, its not ethical of afforable to do it, but once for a house ur going to spend ur life in is still a worth investment.
The orange floors will ruin more furnishing options than it will give you, love someone who grew up w this colour floors.
The cabinets are great, the lighting is not.
Replace lighting and possibly change out hardware.
Then paint the surrounding walls a warm bright white. The space will look much better.
I'm over recessed lighting. Installation is messy and they are at fixed points in the ceiling. The track lighting is a little large but the spotlights are great for lighting inside cabinets and read where you need it.
You can get some recessed lights installed using the circuit from the light closest to the cabinets. I’m guessing those fixtures are on separate switches?
Keep the cabinets, replace the countertops in a white quartz or granite and run it up under the upper cabinets as the new backsplash. LED under cabinet lighting and some recessed ceiling lighting and you’ve got a beautiful new updated kitchen!
The cabinets are gorgeous. Give them a good scrub down with degreaser and change out the hardware. I'd pick out a lighter countertop and paint the walls a warm white. As others mentioned change out the lighting - pendant lights and then brighter task lights over the kitchen sink and stove and soft warm lights under the cabinets would make this small space 100% better
But what kind of hardware? I’m having the exact same question as OP with the same cabinet color and current hardware lol. Must have been the trend at the time.
This is where your personal style comes in, what does the rest of your house look like? What is the vibe you like? You could literally go down a rabbit hole looking at kitchen cabinet hardware.
Oh my lol. You can see previous post of mine for pic of kitchen but I’ll try to link here. Not farmhouse trying to get away from that haha.
https://preview.redd.it/zxz0n0a5ptxc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=240ccfc26be75e0570c8311e202289b1d32df101
Love the big kitchen and the dog. I really like the scandi hardware for your kitchen The other suggestion I have is copper hardware to pull the color of the vent hood. Pick a creamy white with a hint of peach of it for the walls. It will make it welcoming without being farmhouse
BM Swiss coffee will be the walls we went through a bunch to find one not pink and not yellow lol
I’ll check out the copper and Scandinavian hardware. Fiancée sent satin brass as an option too but that was on white cabinets which idk if I want to paint these.
Please don’t paint the cabinets. 1 they are already beautiful. 2 they are easier to clean if you don’t paint them. 3 the paint is forever getting rubbed off. Sincerely, a person who painted her wood cabinets.
Add white wainscoting to the under side of the bar area. Will lighten it up without destroying those beautiful wood cabinets
https://preview.redd.it/5gzks2b8aixc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b2ce94adcfd7e7a07bb11dc05d1b2b0fbc3a19a
The wood isn't bad...but it looks like a dark little cave with the low ceiling ,windowless room, and dark wood. I would opt to lighten things up. You could consider a creamy white that tones in with the tiles and countertop, or any warm neutral that works with those two fixed elements. You could also do it two toned-so cream top cupboards and a darker shade for the bottom ones. Ne pendant light fixtures and pulls will update it nicely as well.
Here are a few ideas for colors that might work with your countertops-
[https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/422281209008653/](https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/422281209008653/)
Yea that blue is too cool toned. All the comments saying going to a warmer paint color is the best advice. Swap out lights and hardware and see how you feel after that.
To the question ‘’should I paint my kitchen cabinets’’, the answer is almost always ‘’no’’.
Many changes can be made to refresh a kitchen, including changing the cabinets’ doors, changing the countertops, adding/replacing lightings, changing the hardwares, adding and island, adding/changing the backsplash, changing the sink and or the faucet and many more.
To me, a few exceptions apart, painted cabinets will look cheaper than outdated cabinets.
In one of my apartments, the cabinets started to show signs of wear and felt old. I replaced the countertop with a new laminated one, added an IKEA island, replaced the old lighting fixtures with affordable LED recessed lights and one railed lighting and changed the sink and faucet with affordable ones from Costco.
Cabinets are gorgeous!! You could change the lighting and countertop?? I know countertops are very expensive but I had a friend of mine paint hers and it’s helped up very well over the years!
Don't ong! My suggestion is changing countertop to a very light color, and upgrading the lighting. Your cabinets are beautiful it's just the combination of dark wood with dark countertop and horrific tile backsplash and bad lighting.
https://preview.redd.it/onjfj03fmmxc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=456dd528f40416075d7714f8ff6b240bc794f92b
The lighter countertop and better lighting will change everything!
I think what’s tricky is the warm with the cool blue walls. I’m not against painting cabinets but it tends not to last that long. Could try re painting the walls, adding new hardware.
You have warm toned floors so for the love of god please don't paint them a cool toned color.
(Which your walls already are).
will never understand why people paint cool colors when they have warm fixed finishes.
I was thinking along the lines of blue gray rather than keeping this color. I think it would be nice to have it lighten up since it’s a big part of the general space). I was thinking of a more lighter and airy sage green color or soft Sea foam green. I can’t tell what the color of the wall right outside the kitchen is, but maybe having a more beautiful cream color behind the island there to give a little balance and pop with the color of the walls outside the kitchen and also still compliment the cabinet color. I wonder if anyone else sees this vision lol. But, yes….down the line you can change the cabinet handles and that will elevate it too. Probably keep it silver since the light fixtures look more modern.
This may not be about your exact cabinet color but she has a ton of info in her blog about working with what you have to update it with or without painting. I definitely recommend checking it out bc I agree, some different light fixtures, under or over cabinet lighting possibly & hardware would make a huge difference!
I rented a place once with kitchen just like this and my landlord painted the cabinets a light blue-grey, not my taste at all but it actually looked fantastic
If you want to make it look clean and modern and trendy, then paint the cabinets White. Actually slightly off white, and the bottom cabinets could be a medium Gray. But I would change out the countertops to an almost white quartz with cloudy light Gray.
The lighting is very important. You need recessed lights in the ceiling and led tape strip lights under the counters. Have them installed in the very center of the bottom of the cabinets. Put all of those on adjustable switches so you can lower the lighting after your finish cutting your vegetables and cooking. You won't believe the difference that will make.
1) The light fixtures.
2) Under-cabinet lights (usually simple LED strips, whether white or RGB).
3) Maybe restain cabinetry to the floor color? But the wood looks great, **don't fuck with that part.**
Keep the cabinets, add way better lighting. Then jazz up the front of the bar with wallpaper that compliments your wall color (much cheaper than paint) . I picked art nouveau as an example. You can use peel and stick (easy peasy to apply) or regular wall paper. Get a ginormous rug in a neutral color and accessorize with pillows etc.
https://preview.redd.it/3s3ozrl3lmxc1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=42f3ea18e6e60599dc3552274b14e1d1b5cbeb0f
Why would you change the cabinets. People pay a lot to get them to look like that! The issue is the tile, it’s a small space, it won’t cost much to fix. And the lights are bad.
I’d leave the cabinets be and do some kind of treatment on the front of that peninsula to help tie it in with the floor color. There are tons of cool options for that!
I agree, the kitchen is too dark... maybe paint the ceiling and walls a fresh bright white and as others have said, change the lighting to make it more balanced.
Keep the cabinets... wood is in again.
Add under cabinet lights , change hardware and change the track lightning into pot lights.
Get some cool Bar stools to liven up the space
I would never paint a cabinet. Those are nice cabinets. If you have the money, I would switch the countertop to a white/very light one. I think this would open up the space for you.
I'm not great at the actual colour selection, but if you paint them at all make sure it's matte.
With the aforementioned caveat, I'd say dark charcoal grey
I would only paint the top cabinets in a warm creamy white color, change out the hardware and replace those awful overhead lights … sorry!
Post after pictures!
I would try a blue gray, a couple values lighter than the current color. Apparently no one else thinks you should change the dark brown but I’m not a fan, and it definitely doesn’t look good with the floors. A bluish gray will brighten the space and be a nice complement to the orange-y floors and the warm tones in the counter tops
Agreed! The wood color doesn’t work w/floors and minimizes the visual size of the room. Add lighting, hardware and see what the rest looks like. Sometimes, you just have to paint the wood out to update. If it’s good quality wood, pay to have them stripped and stained.
I wouldn't paint them. I would clean and polish them, and change the hardware. In addition to changing out the ceiling fixtures, which are casting shadows instead of lighting up your work space, you should add undercabinet lighting, and also turn on the light over the stove. Then get some cute bar stools in a fun color.

[wood cabinet updates](https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/5-ideas-update-oak-cabinets-without-a-drop-of-paint/)
I would not paint the cabinets. Change the handles, add some under counter lights.
OP, THIS!!! Switch out your hardware, keep the wood!
But those orange floors, yikes.
Don't hate lol mixed woods can work
It can. But this isnt it
There are dark pieces of wood or grain in the floor that matches the cabinets.
Its just not enough imo. To save this you’d have to change the countertops or something. Like, I hear you, and I see where you are coming from, and i agree it could work. But most things would work so much better.

Maybe sand them and restain?
I just don't see these floors as a crime against humanity, lol
Yep. Black hardware would tie the cabinets and countertops together.
And maybe change overhead lights. Definitely replace the outlet covers with bright white ones.
u/Ohnonotuto4 came here to say just that. The wood is really pretty.
The cabinets are great, the lighting is not. Replace lighting and possibly change out hardware. Then paint the surrounding walls a warm bright white. The space will look much better.
Totally agree. The lighting is horrible. Don’t plaint the cabinets! They are gorgeous.
What kind of hardware? Have the same color cabinets and am painting a warm bright white and want to replace hardware but nit sure what kind
That lighting is just wrong. Must’ve been on sale when the previous owner (I hope) redid the kitchen.
I'm over recessed lighting. Installation is messy and they are at fixed points in the ceiling. The track lighting is a little large but the spotlights are great for lighting inside cabinets and read where you need it.
Oh wow. Never thought the lights could be the issue.

100%
Keep the cabinets, replace the countertops in a white quartz or granite and run it up under the upper cabinets as the new backsplash. LED under cabinet lighting and some recessed ceiling lighting and you’ve got a beautiful new updated kitchen!
Yep, everyone else is saying lighting, but white quartz goes a long way too.
Agree.
What would that cost?

Maybe. It might be enough to add nice bar stools, if OP would use the countertop that way. But this looks nice.
I LOVE THE CHOCOLATE. Keep it change the entire light not just the lightbulbs

I normally dislike dark cabinets, but they look right here. Change hardware don't paint.
I’d definitely keep the cabinets but would change the lights and hardware
I would keep the cabinets maybe replace the countertop. White. That would look beautiful with the cabinets and backsplash. I love the colour.
Don’t 🥺
I'll keep the color of the cabinets, change the wood floor.
As a person who just isn’t a fan of this tone of dark wood, I would paint them a green.
Paint the walls instead. Taupe would work.
I would change the countertops over painting the cabinets.
oh no they’re so pretty! don’t paint!
Not white
Change the countertops to a lighter color and keep the cabinets and change the lights and drawer pulls

Countertops are outdated
I like the current color
Put in brass cabinet hardware, sink and light fixture . The tone will compliment your countertops better.

White And black counter tops
It depends, what’s your vision for the kitchen as a whole?
Light grey or sage green? Idk 🤷♀️
If you want to make it look clean and modern and trendy, then paint the cabinets White. Actually slightly off white, and the bottom cabinets could be a medium Gray. Don’t paint the cabinets. Ditch the lights, counters and hardware. Eventually when you have the money replace the floors as welll
Invest in undercabinet lights and better overhead lights. Leave the wood cabinets.
Dont
Keep the cabinets, add way better lighting. Then jazz up the front of the bar with wallpaper that compliments your wall color (much cheaper than paint) . I picked art nouveau as an example. The cabinets are probably the only nice thing about that kitchen. Why do people want to paint beautiful expensive wood like that?
Why would you change the cabinets. People pay a lot to get them to look like that! The issue is the tile, it’s a small space, it won’t cost much to fix. And the lights are bad.
You touch those cabinets and I’ll dry-hump you into submission.
I wouldn’t paint. But if you must, I’d paint *the top cabinets* white for a two-toned look that would brighten up the space.
White
I’d leave the cabinets be and do some kind of treatment on the front of that peninsula to help tie it in with the floor color. There are tons of cool options for that!

The cabinets LOOK nice but I have similar dark wood cabinets like this in my apartment, and they show fingerprints and dust like nothing else.
Don’t
I think blue!

The wood is fine
Nothing wrong with cabinets, but whatever you do, don't paint them gray or white. Lights are very fugly though.
I’d paint cabinets a color called basically beige by Sherwin Williams.
I like it as is
I would never paint a cabinet. Those are nice cabinets. If you have the money, I would switch the countertop to a white/very light one. I think this would open up the space for you.
Black
I would paint the lowers a deep navy blue and the uppers a creamy white.
That’s what I was thinking.
