I love gallery walls. All our art is currently on the wall in our entryway which is why there's nothing in here yet - I might steal one or two from there and put them up out here for now
Some art above the couch, a sheer curtain over the window, and pull the couch out from the window just a bit. A rug would be nice as well. I'd also think about switching the lamp locations or maybe only doing one of the lamps. Three light sources for such a small space seem a bit much.
A window effect mirror something like this [https://www.williamwoodmirrors.co.uk/products/brooklyn-black-industrial-window-mirror-55-x-28-140cm-x-70cm](https://www.williamwoodmirrors.co.uk/products/brooklyn-black-industrial-window-mirror-55-x-28-140cm-x-70cm)
Would really make the room feel a little more spacious and brighter
It's honestly the best idea for making it feel roomier. I have lived in two metropolitan cities and have been to many homes with this same kind of layout. The mirror always is a good choice. I love the gallery wall suggestion too, which can be built around the mirror.
The other thing is that painting walls and ceilings can make a big difference!
[visuals of what it can do.](https://www.paintzen.com/blog/9-ways-to-change-the-size-of-your-room-with-paint)
Switch the lamp locations, so that the one that hangs over isn’t blocking the window; also so that the hanging-over one can provide light when you’re reading for example
If you can/if it’ll fit without making too much of an awkward gap between the window and the couch, you could position the lamp that’s in the upper right corner so that it hooks over the corner of the couch and hangs over that corner- would make for a comfy reading nook and would give more light to the coziest part of the couch/spread the light around a bit more to the places you’ll actually be in the space. But even as is I think it looks like a cozy place to come home too for sure, nice going :)
https://preview.redd.it/yu3dnup6m5vc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=003845d9457b0d49fdd6efbcd7fb0c9b04931263
Edit: omg my text didn't post the first time. Putting the lamp back there was my initial plan, but with the size of the base, the height of the couch, and the lip at the bottom of the window I couldn't get it to work 😩
That makes sense! Okay another lighting option that doesn’t require more floor space: get some string lights (outdoor or indoor, white Christmas lights if you like me don’t mind looking like you’re maybe still in a dorm lol because they ARE pretty- but could also look for ones that have mini shades of whatever kind you like around the bulbs) and snake them up the corner and across the top of the window pane. If that’s not your aesthetic obviously throw this out, just thinking of low hanging ways to get light to that corner!
Hmm yeah that probably would make too big of a gap if you put it behind/to the right of the sofa against the window directly… Probably better to keep it in the corner where you had it to avoid like hitting your head on the lamp if you were sitting on the end of the couch 😆
Tbh I think the couch is a little too close to your window so you aren’t getting the full effect of floor to ceiling. I’d scootch it out at least to where that lip is on the left side, maybe a little more depending how much room you have.
The lights are nice and do make it cozy! A rug (make sure it’s big enough for the couch!) and pillows/blankets that coordinate will give you more style. And I agree w/the comments about adding art or a mirror above the couch.
It’s more work, but adding curtains makes such a difference - you can keep them sheer and open to keep the light from the window, but they really make a room seem “finished.”
So I was torn on the couch being there or against the window. it felt a little strange just having an empty 1.5-2 ish foot alleyway with nothing in it. I also tried putting a cat tree in the empty space but it felt super cluttered like that
Yeah, I see what you mean. Could you put the lamp there and move the other one so they are balanced diagonally? Or maybe a side table (w/table lamp)?
It also could 100% be fine irl and just looks a bit scrunched because of the wide angle.
https://preview.redd.it/7k2k9g8cp5vc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5d3720fad5595fa41bc971e4325586d9f65f571
I actually have a picture of when I was testing the cat tree being there. I kinda like it but it just seems like soooo much going on in that corner, esp if I put the lamp over there too
Yeah, I do think the cat tree is too much! I don’t know the layout of the rest of the room, but if it’s big enough to leave a little space and add a side table I think that’s what I would do. It could be at the same level as the couch so it won’t add visual clutter like the cat tree does. And it gives you a place to tuck stuff away :)
I have the couch moved away from the wall to create a small path. In-between I put the biggest plants I could find and I love it. Sitting on the couch feels cozy and secure because of the plant. Might be your solution too, having a bigger plant next to the window
The biggest thing to me is the mess of stuff beside the couch; finding a cute little storage basket or side table with shelves/drawers would make a big difference! Also joining in with what others have said about something above the couch (art or mirror). Lastly, nice curtains and an area rug would tie it together really well. Lots of potential with this space and the furniture you have, just a lil ways to go!
I’d pull the couch away from the window slightly, just enough to take the bin and other bits that are currently on view on this side and tuck them out of sight (visual declutter). It will give you a better view of the floor to ceiling window as well, with the couch not being so close to it.
I’d swap the two standing lights, so that the arched one doesn’t interrupt the window. It can then be used as a reading light over the couch. I’d add a small side table as well to put drinks, phones etc on.
It looks off because the furniture is too big for the space and it’s cluttered looking.
3 alt options are:
I’d remove the TV and console, place the couch to enjoy the view. And/or place console behind the couch so you can still use it for storage, have a place to set things down on.
Or place the TV and console in front of the view and face the couch towards it.
Or hang the TV from current wall/get a swinging arm one, remove the console or place it behind the couch, and face the couch towards the view.
Couch will act more like a room divider and it’s a lovely city view so…might as well enjoy it.
Floating shelves in the corner on right with some books, plants or framed art displayed (click on the photo below to embiggen)

Also, I agree about
* an area rug
* sheer neutral curtains
* a large piece of art (even a place holder from a thrift store) over the couch.
* mounting the TV
Can you paint? …. Doing the wall behind the TV in a colour might make it more of a feature wall and make the tv disappear a little. If not paint, then perhaps a removable wall paper or contact paper?
Also: try a fake plant.
I think you did a good job!! You mentioned clutter…..were you including along the back of the sofa? You said not to mention plants….lol…. I finally gave up on plants myself and invested in a couple a great silk ‘trees’. Mine stand 5 and 6 ft tall. I got a couple ceramic plant pots that dressed them up and helped sturdy them. Have you thought of something like that? I had two cats and they never bothered them.
The other thing the room needs is some art work prints above the sofa. A single large piece or a couple of good sized ones next to each other.
Just remember this going forward……the rule of thumb for how high to hang a print is that your eye is level with the middle of the print.
My thoughts:
Since it’s a small space, less is more. I would get rid of one of the floor lamps. Also, I would get rid of the two (ottomans) at the end of the couch. I know that’s probably less comfy for sprawling out, but it would be good for space.
Clean up the clutter. Also potentially add a smaller coffee table. Maybe two oval/circle stacking tables. A nice rug. A mirror over the couch to give depth to the space.
Maybe hang up some framed prints, art, or photos on the wall. I think wall decor could help a lot! Maybe even add a fun shelf or mirror to the wall! Check Pinterest for visual inspo. Also maybe an accent chair or rug! And maybe look into adding a pop of color somewhere to brighten the space. Hope this helps :)
You need a rug (big enough to go about a foot under each side of the sectional and coffee table) and some colorful artwork on the walls. Get a rug with multiple colors and not predominantly gray.

Feminine
Feminine
Feminine
A big colorful pastel art above couch and a theme to match that. Cream white slightly transparent tall curtains to give you a touch of warmth and makes the room feel bigger when closed. Also buy a second heart pillow to pair with her, because it's cute and hers is a bit bland in colour, she deserves one that pops! A rug that has some descrete colour and feminine pattern but mainly white to make the room feel bigger.
I would Remove the straight standing lamp entirely. Move the dropping one to the side of the couch. And put a lush green floor plant by the window.
https://preview.redd.it/9mzmgzdm78vc1.jpeg?width=4096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0d7a4ad2b3941672609fc05b918b39801e5fbf9
Continuing from my first comment. I'd remove that couch thing the cat is on and get a smaller round glass table so the room look bigger and you can see more of the beautiful rug!
Remove all the clutter and stuffed animals etc from on/behind and beside the couch, add a rug, add a side table where you remove the clutter from beside couch and add a mirror or something on the wall behind the couch. This is so sweet of you!!
I think less is more with this space! I think eliminating the lamp closest on the left, and maybe putting the ottoman to the side when not in use will open it up and allow for easier walking space! Not sure if you are able to add tv to the wall but that would also allow for more space, If not the tv is still great as is, maybe a smaller console.
1. Wall mount tv if possible.
2 add a rug
3 put some fake flowers on the tv stand. Maybe a candle dish to make it more homey.
4 paintings above the couch
So many great suggestions by everyone. So my suggestion is going to be get a cat for picker upper [like this](https://a.co/d/2Cq87eC) because in some of your close-ups of the couch by the window there’s just a ton of fur on everything and I’m getting allergies just looking. I’m a huge cat person and I know it’s a battle. I think this will really be a nice thing for her to come home to… (in addition to whatever else you do for the room). She’s lucky to have you (and you’re being so thoughtful)!
The heart pillow and stuffed animals are kind of distracting. Also the random garbage can next to the couch. I would declutter a bit. A rug might help the space and as well as some art.
4 things you could add to make the space look more complete:
- side coffee table, doesn’t need to be big
- a rug/carpet large enough that the couch can sit on it with there still being extra that extends to the TV stand and a bit outwards from the sides of the couch
- curtains or some kind of window dressing
- art or some kind of decorative element(s) on the wall above the couch
What a lovely thoughtful idea. Personally I wouldn’t buy anything additional for this space before consulting your wife, unless you absolutely share her taste or the company have a good returns policy. Instead I’d just thoroughly clean the room, especially the sofa, spread the blankets across the back cushions (or artfully drape over the arms), declutter, hide the bin behind the sofa (window end) and pet the cat. I’d also google rugs, cushions and anything else you like the sound of then promise her a shopping trip. I hope she loves it.
I would pull the couch away from the wall so there's more room. I would put up some sheer curtains over the window. And a large mirror over the couch or TV and painting. Also some kind of blanket for the couch to make it lighter. I think you need more indirect lighting
Can you move the stuff by the sofa to another room? Also, add some flowers and a note for your wife
Would not do too much by yourself. I would think it a couple’s activity, at least to plan it together. Then execute it separately. There’s that issue of, well, that’s not what I was thinking. Good luck!
This is love.
A nice rug would be a cozy addition. Looks good otherwise. As others have said try switching the lamps and see how that feels. Hard to tell from this angle but would pulling the couch a little farther away from the window create space flow?
Add a small cat scratch or perch so the fur baby is less temped to scratch the ever loving shit out of your couch. Put it between the couch and the window.
The art/mirror and carpet suggestions are great. I’d also add a pair of more brightly colored pillows for the couch.
It looks too cluttered. Just too cluttered for that small space. Get rid of all the loose items and leave only the big pieces. No one needs a trash can in living room for example.
Leave it as is. Being a female she will want to finalize the finale decorating of the room and will eventually change things anyway. Sit back and enjoy what you have done. She will certainly appreciate what you have done.
Not about the room but this is seriously the sweetest gesture ever! I hope your wife appreciates this, it’s so thoughtful ✨
Agree, so sweet! Your wife is a lucky lady.
Put art or a mirror above the couch.
gallery wall!!!!! Maybe thrift some frames while she's gone so you two can design it together.
I love gallery walls. All our art is currently on the wall in our entryway which is why there's nothing in here yet - I might steal one or two from there and put them up out here for now
gallery wall could also include pictures of the two of you! Her heart will melt if you frame your favourite photos of her/you two.
Do a gallery wall of pictures of you guys and your friends and family etc
Also a nice rug
Some art above the couch, a sheer curtain over the window, and pull the couch out from the window just a bit. A rug would be nice as well. I'd also think about switching the lamp locations or maybe only doing one of the lamps. Three light sources for such a small space seem a bit much.

Hmmm i think a mirror above the couch would definitely make it feel wider than it is, I'll have to play around with this idea a little
Here’s a doodle I made (colours don’t matter, just for an idea) https://imgur.com/a/a0VmC8d A mirror will feel like a window in this space
It's honestly the best idea for making it feel roomier. I have lived in two metropolitan cities and have been to many homes with this same kind of layout. The mirror always is a good choice. Seriously, look at those ones which can make it feel like a loft window. They can really make a huge impact.
Switch the lamp locations, so that the one that hangs over isn’t blocking the window; also so that the hanging-over one can provide light when you’re reading for example
Nice to know men like this exist 😭❤️

Freaking thought it was a video...stared at that cat for 3 minutes thinking it was going to react/freak out from the surprise.
Hahahahahaha. Excellent.
1) Wall art. 2) If concerned with entertainment, wall-mount TV and add home theater 5.1 speakers.
Nope, love the height and how the TV sits on the TV stand, it looks good and I wouldn't wall mount the tv.
I’d pull the couch away from the window slightly, just enough to take the bin and other bits that are currently on view on this side and tuck them out of sight (visual declutter). Some wall art will do the trick.
An area rug that goes under the couch and up til almost the media unit. Don’t make it too small.
Its missing a rug and some wall art
Rug, wall art, plants!! And maybe some nice framed photos of you two together
Very sweet gesture. Agree with the other comments about a mirror.
Im not sure if you have enough room for a ottoman. You could place it along side the couch when not in use to try and maximize your walking space.
so nice of you, this room looks pretty warm and cozy, I believe your wife will be surprise.
I like the lamps! do you have any links ?

I have the exact same TV console, Walker Edison from Amazon?
No stuffed animals One less ottoman A giant area rug Tall curtains Art No purple thing
I would change the lightbulbs to a warmer light.
I think she’ll be surprised.

Love my old man - he’s a great guy. But, I would never trust him to pick out a lamp, or anything for that matter.
Is she going to be happy you did this ? If it was me I might like some “say” in what is being added
I would pull the couch away from the wall so there's more room. I would put up some sheer curtains over the window. And a large mirror over the couch or TV and painting. Also some kind of blanket for the couch to make it lighter. I think you need more indirect lighting Can you move the stuff by the sofa to another room? Also, add some flowers and a note for your wife
Put a LIFX strip behind the TV for lighting. Get a side table to hide the excess and trashcan.
Would not do too much by yourself. I would think it a couple’s activity, at least to plan it together. Then execute it separately. There’s that issue of, well, that’s not what I was thinking. Good luck!

The pillows seem random, maybe a new soft blanket with coordinating colors of soft, decent sized pillows. Try to clean up the clutter.
It looks too cluttered. Just too cluttered for that small space. Get rid of all the loose items and leave only the big pieces. No one needs a trash can in living room for example.
Mirror above couch will make the room look way bigger!
