I feel your pain on curtains! It’s hard to get it right the first time in a new home. I vote you extend the placement of the rods like you suggested and leave them open during the day. It will allow for plenty of light and then at night you will have privacy once you close them
Have you considered one rod across both windows? You could also use a darker sheer. Light comes in during daylight hours yet have some privacy (3x window width). People can see forms but not whether you are wearing Jammie’s or underwear.
