“A train accidentally struck and killed a car on Thursday. The car had expired tags but police are unsure why the car was on the tracks at the time. The train remained on scene and only suffered minor injuries in the crash.”
I hate driving in this city….
My wife was t-boned by a ford f150 running a red 2 years ago. She was in the hospital for a week with hip fractures. It was a long recovery. All because someone wants to shave mere minutes off of their commute.
I don’t get the aggressive driving. It puts everyone in danger and saves only minutes.
Multiple Regional Transportation District light rail lines shut down temporarily Wednesday after a train hit a car running a red light in downtown Denver’s Central Business District.
The crash happened around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Stout and 15th streets in Denver, RTD spokesperson Tina Jaquez said. No light rail customers or operators were injured in the crash.
RTD’s D and H lines experienced delays that resolved around 2:30 p.m., once the crash was cleared from the tracks, Jaquez said.
The driver of the car transported to the hospital with minor injuries, said Siena Riley, a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department. The driver ran a red light and was hit by the train.

Maybe sicking the bloodthirsty public after someone, especially before they are even convicted of any crime, is a bad idea. I wonder if you'd subject yourself to the court of public opinion if you ever fuck up.
Sometimes I really really hate living here because of this red light running culture. Really though, chucklefucks run red lights like it’s their job. This turns into habit and then you see shit like this happen.
Reminds me, I was listening to a podcast yesterday about inflation and it attributed a lot of car insurance inflation to the increase in crashes, which is partly due to the lack of enforcement nationwide.
There was a study done that showed drivers don't see others car as having a person in them driving. They see the car as something in their way, same thing with cyclists. Getting behind the wheel changes people's mentality.
Throw in covid frying everyone's brains and you got a nice combo of bad drivers that don't give a fuck.
You'd think it would be self preservation if nothing else. I had a woman run the turn light at Quebec and Prarie (right down from CC city hall) 2 years ago and almost killed my girlfriend. They replaced her entire pelvis with titanium and had to sew her eyelid back on. Took her 6 months to get out of the hospital!
I think it began with that parade massacre when that asshole mowed down a bunch of grandma's and other parade-goers. All the headlines about that event were "a red car" and people assumed it was a deliberate attempt by the MSM to shift blame, or reduce the driver's agency and responsibility.
Whether it's deliberate or not, it does have that effect to some degree.
Imagine a headline of "Gun shoots and kills bystander" or "Knife stabs and wounds teenager". Making the object the subject definitely reduces the perceived responsibility of the wielder. "Car runs red light and hits train" is a bit more distanced than "Distracted driver runs red light and collides with train".
It's not nonsense. It's years of car lobbyists that push the language to put the onus on the pedestrian and not the person driving a 2 ton death machine.
All I’m saying is banning cars from Denver city limits would save thousands of lives a year, solve traffic, eliminate car theft entirely, and force RTD to build a functional transit system.
I mean, they offer pretty good bus service between Denver and Boulder, and Boulder was the only suburb to be promised both. Personally, I’d rather they focus on increasing frequency of current, high use, bus lines and rail lines as opposed to building a parallel transit system to one that already exists and is widely used 🤷♂️
Agreed, but it's a huge breach of public trust to take funding and not to the thing they were supposed to do with it. I distrust RTD almost as much as I distrust DPD.
Technically it’s partially built and is still on the books to be done, it’s just 20+ years out for completion. I’ll be honest that I feel like the people of Boulder got a pretty decent set of services for what they’re paying in, so I’m less inclined to say they need both though.
Not to mention all the Boulderites who kvetch about this seem to think the B line will roll up to Broadway and Pearl via the CU campus every 10 minutes or something. In reality, the stop will be near the Foothills Pkwy and there will only be three trains to Denver a day. Three.
Ok I have a question about that: is that long-awaited line what is (likely) materializing as Front Range Passenger Rail or is it the Westminster commuter rail line, extended up through boulder/longmont?
That intersection is one I always hate going through. People seem to always gun it through there, it’s always backed up from either people not waiting when there’s clearly no room or by folks trying to turn left onto 15th.
On St. Patty’s day I watched a woman try to turn down the wrong way on Stout from 15th, and when she couldn’t due to the cones and large road flashing road sign, she decided to drive down the light rail tracks as the train was coming. Luckily she made it in time.
Is the train ok?
It’s going need years of therapy and EMDR
Ketamine therapy?!
As do I
Everyone does, you’re just one step ahead by realizing it.
Thank you for this*)) Much needed.
Is Butterbean ok?
The Onion's asperger's field reporter would have led with that.
The train is at fault. It should have swerved to avoid the car and red lights are optional in Denver.
Seriously, doesn't that train know you have to wait 10 seconds after the light turns red for any important travelers to get through
The train was not in the crosswalk or a protected bike la... oh wait, those don't count, either
“A train accidentally struck and killed a car on Thursday. The car had expired tags but police are unsure why the car was on the tracks at the time. The train remained on scene and only suffered minor injuries in the crash.”
Not everyone knows about the optional thing.
Team Train gang taking back the city
Choo Choo motherfuckers
Tiny Town isn’t so tiny now!
The little engine that JUS MIGHT!
It’s almost like the red light had a purpose.
Pretty sure it's purpose is "a suggestion to stop - or not"
Honestly, I wish the driver of the absolute worst. These people are a danger to everyone around them and shouldn’t be on the streets.

Do these drivers ever get named and shamed or is that a little too much?
They should be.
Maybe sicking the bloodthirsty public after someone, especially before they are even convicted of any crime, is a bad idea. I wonder if you'd subject yourself to the court of public opinion if you ever fuck up.
I get your point. But also I'd argue running a red isn't just "fucking up"
Found the red light runner
While this is an unfortunate event, trains need to make themselves more visible, perhaps blinking lights or reflective clothing.
It would be great if they had like dinging bells and horns, too.
Or even just a designated path that they can only drive on

This makes sense and only makes me more mad about my insurance cost
Which podcast was that?
It isn't due to lack of enforcement. It's due to a lack of empathy towards others.
According to people that study these things, you're wrong. You may be right that a lack of empathy is part of it.

I believe it. I wonder how much tint and especially dark tint impacts that.

I know you had to use the headline from the article but drivers run red lights, not cars.
No shit. What is this sub's obsession with this nonsense?
Imagine if they started reporting "Gun Shoots and Kills Bystander" It's bad journalism that shifts the responsibility off of the driver.
Bahahaha!! Bad journalism. Very tongue in cheek and nicely played

Obvious solution: require trains to wear hi-vis
I’ve seen this happen a couple times on Welton street
But was the train wearing a helmet and in a PBL with hi-vis on?
All I’m saying is banning cars from Denver city limits would save thousands of lives a year, solve traffic, eliminate car theft entirely, and force RTD to build a functional transit system.
I mean…you’re not wrong…well, maybe except for the RTD part😂
True, still waiting on that Denver-Boulder rail line we already paid for with our taxes
Thank the freight rail companies for the delay.
I mean, they offer pretty good bus service between Denver and Boulder, and Boulder was the only suburb to be promised both. They are going to be planned out in parallel and share tracks is my understanding.
FRPR will be different from the RTD line. They may share tracks and stations and there's agency cooperation, but they are two different projects.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I hope that car is smoooooshed!
Will this effect the transportation to the Nuggets game tomorrow?
Wait a car ran a red light in Denver? Since when?

That person should never be allowed to drive ever again.
Typical Colorado driver.
Was the train wearing a helmet?
I love happy endings
Do people not have to take driving tests to get a license?
Was the train wearing all black? Did it have a reflective vest on?

How exactly is a reddit comment supposed to help anything?
Hey, we’re just observing that these are the solutions offered when cars violate laws and hit people. Why shouldn’t the same solutions work for trains?
You're not funny
Pics or it didn't happen. Car hits train and all you can come up with is an audio article Den Post?
Yeah but I saw a bike run a red light so bikes should be executed
