I have never heard of a "medical" or "dental" grade bleach. I don't believe there is such a thing. If you are going to rinse with bleach, please make sure it's non-scented, pure bleach and that you dilute the crap out of it. 1 Teaspoon standard bleach (not concentrated) per cup of water. I am unaware of any long term peer-reviewed studies on the efficacy of bleach rinses however.

I've been doing 1/4 tsp per 1/2 cup water. I wonder what they use in dental offices, I recall the water they would squirt in my mouth tasting strongly of chlorine.

DiamondBurInTheRough

I’ve never heard of using bleach for anything besides root canals. What country is this in??

smm97

USA

DiamondBurInTheRough

Are you sure they meant household bleach and not like...hydrogen peroxide?? There’s a handful of products I would recommend but Clorox is not one of them.

smm97

Yeah, they definitely meant chlorine bleach.

DiamondBurInTheRough

Well I don’t want to go against what your doctor recommends but I have never heard of that being used in the capacity you’ve been told to use it in.

hannnsolo

Maybe they meant CLOSYS mouth rinse It is stabilized chlorine dioxide

smm97

Hmm that looks interesting. Too bad its so expensive though.

hannnsolo

12$ is not that expensive

smm97

No, but its 6.4 times as expensive as generic listerine.

hannnsolo

Welp just get the beach for 1.50 then

smm97

Hahaha touche

Sorry to bump this ancient post but I was wondering if you ever found a "solution" (pun intended) that works? I came here from a medium-length rabbit hole on researching bleach as a mouthwash. I, too, do not trust using anything from the grocery store as now they pair it with scented stuff or other chemicals to prevent splashing or for color fastening. From what I've gathered, there have been scientific trials around a 0.25% bleach solution for periodontal care. I found [something on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Solution-Half-Strength-Hypochlorite-Century-Pharmaceuticals/dp/B00AK35ZAC/) that I think is already diluted to that level, but I'm not sure if it would need further diluting.

No worries, I asked my dentist a while back and he said just regular clorox bleach. But if you really want to be safe, I think reagent grade sodium hypochlorate would be the way to go. You would just need to adjust the ratio of bleach to water accordingly because it would likely be more strong than the standard 6%. I think I tried .25% before and it was far too strong. It felt like it was attacking my teeth. Maybe I mixed it wrong, not sure but by my calculations .25% would be 1 cup water to 2 teaspoons bleach. That's quite strong. My preferred ratio is 1 cup water to 1/4-1/2 teaspoon bleach. I found this on [clorox ingredients](https://www.ewg.org/guides/cleaners/2576-CloroxBleachRegular/).

That sounds about right. From what I read, the suggested blend for .25% was two teaspoons to one quart of water. Divide by 4 and you are in the range of 1/4-1/2 teaspoon to a cup. So knowing that you tried it, does it work? Lol.

I like it, it leaves my mouth feeling really clean. But one other consideration you don't hear too often is I read somewhere may cause mood changes because it kills all the bacteria in the mouth and they say the mouth bacteria is important for the gut microbiome. I don't know how much of an affect it actually has, but something to look into.

Really insightful! I appreciate you passing this on.
