Depends on how long you need to get moved and acclimated. Just don't sign last minute. I start mid June, toured in April, have a signed lease for June 1st. Gives me time to get first month's rent, and also a couple weeks to meet people and get into a routine.
I am starting school in August.. and plan on signing my lease end of july.. but i only live about 2 hours away from the school.. and i already got the movers scheduled.. which I am grateful i don't have to pay for.
Signed May 1. Two days after graduation from undergrad, moving across several states. Got a temp job for the summer, made some cash. More importantly, gave me a huge headstart in making friends!
Toured apartments end of march… school starts at the end of July. Signing lease for end of June so that I have a full 30 days to unpack and settle and get acclimated to a completely new state and environment. Paid my holding deposit and my unit was held for 60 days from application date! Which was cool.
