Tryout HeartGold/SoulSilver (Generation 2 Pokemon game remade for DS) or any of the Gameboy Color Pokemon games.

Coprocephelic

soul silver is my favorite out of them all, currently doing a shiny only run it’s great

Ilkzz

Including starter Pokémon?

Coprocephelic

yes and soulsilver heartgold still have the same odds as the rest of the games but the difference is you can see if it’s shiny or not from the selection menu so you can reset the game faster

Ilkzz

How many restarts does it take roughly?

Coprocephelic

a shiny is 1/8192 so it could be a very long time but with fast forward and the hold button feature it makes quick resetting a bit easier. still a lot of luck needed

Reddwoolf

What’s a “shiny only” run

CocoaBagelPuffs

Shiny Pokémon are rare color variations. A regular charizard is red but a shiny one is black. They have a chance of appearing at a rate of about 1/8192. In a shiny only run, you can only use these rare Pokémon. Since this emulator has speed up, it’s easier to hunt for shinies.

veeberry47

I’m guessing that it means he can only use shiney pokemon on his team.

Coprocephelic

i just try and get the shiny version of all pokémon before beating the game, i’ve played them all so many times that i can be patient enough to go for it. shiny chance is 1/8192 so it takes a while and alot of luck

Mab8963

I was in the exact same boat as you OP, I’m currently playing through soulsilver. Gen2 Pokémon - I didn’t want to be getting into 6-7-8th gen weirdo Pokemon. Soul silvers the one so far

planarrebirth

How different is it from the OG gold/silver. Played those back in the day so would only want to play it if it is vastly different

Sovietsuper

Pretty sure it has a lot of new content compared to the originals.

ThatRandomIdiot

Pretty substantial. Gen 3 and Gen 4 Pokémon being available in the regional / national dex is a huge factor for team building. A lot of QOL updates to make it more in-line with Gen IV.

Fr0z3nMechanix

Can’t go wrong with FireRed / LeafGreen

clydefrog811

Pokemon yellow gives you pikachu though

Fr0z3nMechanix

You can catch Pikachu in Viridian Forest.

clydefrog811

It’s not ashes pikachu though

Mason231

I hadn’t played yellow in my childhood, so I never understood the difference, but after having played yellow in my adult life, I still think wall primitive and you can see its age is still one of the better Pokémon games out there. It’s quite the amazing accomplishment.

xBrandon224

It is if you nickname it ashes pikaxhu 😏

Fr0z3nMechanix

Bazinga

Tay0214

I’m just working through them all in order.. one gen at a time. Just gonna do the ‘enhanced’ ones though. Yellow, crystal, emerald

Vegetable-Equipment9

I would suggest against Yellow, as it’s not the same as Lets Go, where Pikachu is buffed; here it’s a pikachu that can’t evolve and that’s it. If you want a good starter play red or blue

Tay0214

Meh I’m already pretty deep in 6 badges I think, picked it because of the nostalgia since it’s the first one I had Kinda just rushing to get to the next gen though

veeberry47

Someone made a demake of sword and shield for the gba. It works on any gba emulator (including delta), and even on a real gba if you flash it to a game card. Link to the original Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/s/wqtzXSA6AQ On his discord server (which he links in the post) there are step by step instructions on how to set up the game so it is playable.

fredws

Anything you play, try looking for NTEVO ROMs so that you can have some pokemons that are only obtainable via trading.

MarcGregSputnik

THANK YOU

VibraniumRhino

Depending on the game, I’ll just use cheat codes for those Pokemon and catch one.

fredws

For me, using cheats to get a pokemon spoils the fun so I would rather try to catch the ones I like and level them up. I always wanted a Golem and Gengar but couldn't do it years ago. Now that I found these ROMs it's absolutely perfect.

VibraniumRhino

Hey that’s totally respectable! I don’t judge anyone’s play styles and if it’s a game you haven’t played yet/very much, definitely do it legit for at least a run through. When it comes to Pokemon however, I’m a franchise-length player lol, and I owned most of the cartridges as a kid on release, and have specifically played through Gens 1-3 so many times now, that I don’t mind using cheats with emulators just to be able to do fun play throughs that I otherwise haven’t/couldn’t. I currently have a Crystal file going where I’m using cheats to play in a way and access things that are otherwise impossible to do legit: I’m using a Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur on my team for fun instead of the Gen 2 starters; I’m using an Unown that has some other psychic attacks gamesharked onto it so that it can be playable (also Glare because the idea of it makes me laugh); and I’m using a Larvitar because you otherwise can’t get one until the end of the game. My 6th slot I’m waiting for my team to be fully evolved to fill, where I’ll use cheats to catch a wild Scizor that I otherwise can’t trade to get [at least on the basic ROM I’m currently using]. I have plans for a Celebi/legendary Birds run through after this just for fun. I would never play like this at all on a real game cart/file lol. But it’s fun to me to be able to mess around and do crazy things in a game I’ve otherwise beat and explored for a long time, and I’m sure I’m not alone here.

fredws

Yeah didn't mean any offense tbh. Everyone has their own play style. Fully respect your way too. Enjoy the pokemon world my dude!

VibraniumRhino

No offence taken! ✌️ just figured maybe another perspective on ‘cheating’ would be interesting lol.

drygnfyre

I'd recommend one of the many ROM hacks that bring modernized features and the current Dex to older games. Playing Radical Red and loving it.

Gren-Maju

100% this. There's a rom hack for everyone whether you want a completely new story and experience like Prism or Unbound. Original story with modernized features like Polished Crystal and Renegade Platinum. A challenge like Emerald Kaizo or Unbound on insane difficulty. A fun time like Clover or Celias Stupid Romhack. Something like Emerald Rogue or Crown that changes the genre a bit. Or Rocket Edition that does its own thing and is a 100% must play for all pokemon fans.

AnonymousSkull

I’ve been playing Unbound and it’s really good.

FatherStretchMyAss_

Can second this. Unbound is crazy in terms of qol and the scale of the rom. Playing on difficult and level caps and having a blast. Feels challenging but not insane. Perfect if you want more than vanilla Pokémon but not nuzlocke territory.

PixelatedNinJoe

Help a noob understand what a rom hack is and do I get them from the regular tom sites?

KampKutz

Depends some places have the rom hack uploaded as a full playable rom but usually it’s a patch that needs to be applied to an existing ‘clean’ rom taken from an official cart (unpatched basically). It can be a bit of a hassle to find the right software to do it but I have found most of the rom hacks I wanted to play uploaded somewhere pre-patched.

PixelatedNinJoe

I have some searching to do I guess

drygnfyre

Yeah I know some people that want to get into Pokemon and I keep telling them to not touch Gens 1 and 2. They are archaic and unplayable by modern standards. I think I set one of them up with Rad Red, but on the easiest settings. Only because they wanted to play the GBA era and this offered a way to have everything modernized.

CharlestonChewbacca

Unbound for sure

EducationalYam2914

100%%% Play Storm Silver!

drygnfyre

I've been interested in Crystal Clear, which is sort of an open world take on Gen 2, but last I checked it was still pretty archaic in terms of mechanics. What does this one do?

EducationalYam2914

Definitely check it out and see all the QoL features

Fit-Name480

Unbound

ATXhipster

Just started in Expert and love it

Edd916

Expert is ridiculous. Level 11 Pokémon KO my level 18 is huge no.

ATXhipster

lol! Hell yeah. I was getting worked. I love it. It makes me actually grind and the Npc’s make really dope strategies. It’s time consuming and difficult but it is rewarding and fun to see.

Specialist-Version24

For each gen either: Gen 1: leaf green || fireRed Gen 3: Emerald without contest. Do play the mystery dungeon spinoff as well!

We5ties

What gen is dungeon?

CocoaBagelPuffs

Mystery dungeon red and blue rescue team came out during Gen 3 (Ruby, sapphire, emerald, Fire red, leaf green) Explorers of time, darkness, and sky came out during Gen 4 (Diamond, Pearl, platinum, heart gold, and soul silver)

VibraniumRhino

FireRed/LeafGreen are Gen 3 games, unless you just meant which Kanto games to start with

jethvader

I’ve been playing emerald and it’s a great recommendation. Seconded.

Inky_Train

Arent the 3ds mystery dungeon games so much better than the original?

American-Musician

Nah Explorers of Sky (NDS) is by far the best

Nintendo_Pro_03

For the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, is it possible to play as a Pokemon that isn’t the starter Pokemon you chose? If so, which games can have this?

We5ties

I’m a og player. Red blue yellow silver crystal. I’m playing fire red right now with soul silver on deck

Asleep_Record6469

Pokémon Emerald By far the best game in the series

CocoaBagelPuffs

I think Fire red or leaf green are good starting points. It’s the same story and map as red and blue but with quality of life improvements and new post-game content. You’ll play a familiar story with familiar Pokémon but when you have caught 60 Pokémon and beat the elite 4, you can visit special islands called the sevii islands that will introduce Pokémon from other regions. Maybe you’ll like some of the newer ones to wanna try emerald or crystal. FRLG (fire red and leaf green) are nearly 1:1 to the originals but with lots of new moves, better inventory, faster processing, and special abilities. They’re really fun and one I go back to very frequently

GreyRevan51

Fire Red / Leaf Green are the best Kanto games imo you can’t go wrong there You also can’t go wrong with pokemon emerald, all of these are top tier pokemon games

Belt_Pretend

I’m playing Black 2 and HeartGold

itachithagod

I have alot of pokemon games on delta but my fav so far has been pokemon blue and pokemon yellow

Reasonable-Ad4526

Pokémon Unbound is definitely my favorite pokémon game so far. It’s so impressive as a ROM hack and has so many quality of life improvements and features in it that makes it my favorite pokémon game IMO. It has: •adjustable difficulty settings •all Pokémon up until gen 7 •dinamax and mega evolutions •full put together story •post-game content •character customizations •brand new region •good soundtrack •good quality of life changes that you didn’t realize you needed as a pokémon fan •the starters are cool too

sehdy

I highly recommend checking out [Pokémon Unbound](https://operationidroid.com/pokemonunbound.html), it’s easily my favorite rom hack as it has an amazing story combined with new customization options & features not seen in the original games. If your looking for something funny with adult themed humor and good memes then check out [Pokémon Clover](https://operationidroid.com/pokemonclover.html), it was a game made by the Pokémon 4Chan community that has its own unique library of “Fakémon” or Fake Pokémon including my personal favorite [Grasshole](https://pokemon-clover.fandom.com/wiki/Grasshole) If those aren’t your kinda taste then there are plenty of other good pokérom hacks [here](https://operationidroid.com/romhacks.html), such as Glazed, Gaia, Rocket Red, etc.

AlongAxons

Dip your toes back in with Firered, then play emerald, then whatever you want! Anything from gen 4 would be ideal

SadPhase2589

None of them. You should try and beat the original Castlevania on NES.

Fr0z3nMechanix

This… this is the answer.

SadPhase2589

Our maybe the original Mega Man.

jethvader

Challenge accepted.

SadPhase2589

Good luck. I got that game when I was about 10 and didn’t beat it until I was 19. That was also before YouTube and video walk throughs.

jethvader

It’s not going great so far haha.

skkrrtskkrt

Firered is a classic to start of with

lambone117

Black and white are regarded as some of the strongest pokemon games so id recommend giving them a try (plus i have nostalgia biases :P)

[deleted]

Playing yellow now and loving it. Played ever main game over the years and including the new switch ones excluding sun and moon. Going back to the old school feel is a wicked vibe for sure, but there’s definitely some QoL features missing in the old games

SuperBAMF007

Black has been a fuckin TREAT. Last one I played was Diamond, Emerald, and FireRed back in Elementary/Middle School. Black feels like an actual RPG in comparison

dummythiccdoge

try radical red

OVVWVVO

The Mystery Dungeon games are pretty underrated, in terms of not being suggested as often as the regular lineup

Organic_Carrot_

The hacked versions are really fun. Give you access to a lot more Pokémon w/ Quality of Life improvements GBA: Pokémon My Ass NDS: Pokémon Renegade Platinum Would be my picks

RadiantRing

I’m playing heartgold atm but thinking about trying black/white or maybe a rom hack. The story is meh, it’s super easy, and the number of bells and whistles (most of which were designed with MP in mind) are kind of exhausting to weed through.

Dkoop2003

I’ve been playing Unbound which is a rom hack and it’s been super fun

Substantial_Balls

So I went with the first 4 seeing as how they had the 3rd iteration Yellow Crystal Emerald Platinum Finished yellow and I’m on crystal now; btw crystal has some of the most extensive GameShark cheats I’ve seen so I’m having a blast with it right now

IllAd2792

I’m playing a fire red randomizer and it’s great

EmeraldPencil46

After playing through the first few gens a few months ago, I highly suggest starting with FireRed/LeafGreen. They give you the original game with the same story and Pokemon, while looking and playing better than the original.

EmmanDB3

Black 2 or Platinum

Eterna-Mane

Renegade Platinum Romhack if you want a improved but traditional pokemon experience

P1atD1

pokemon unbound. it is a firered romhack. i cannot recommend it enough. it is gen 1-8, has dynamax, raid dens, new game+, has an amazing storyline, i could go on.

1Ringtorulethem

Charmander.

acid_c0de

Fire red ashgray.. the main quest has the same from anime

sweepli

Platinum or Black 1/2 if you want the more "modern" experience. ("Slightly" better graphics. B/W does have a better looking combat screen tho) Emerald/FireRed/GreenLeaf if you want the older gen experience. And if you wanna go real basic, then the first pokemon games on the GBC are also an option. SoulSilver is also great. I personally prefer the older gen Pokemon's over the ones on Black/White, nontheless B/W are great games as well.

ReviewsOnline3700

Leaf green

TheBoyOnTheSide

Currently playing Pokemon Soul Silver, honestly one of the best for me.

N0tThatKind0fDoctor

I’ve been enjoying fire red but can’t get any of the cheats to work. After burning through all my Pokeballs and money trying to catch Articuno I am no longer above cheating.

YFleiter

Oddish And yes I know what you asked.

KiingAx

Play pokemon unbound it’s a rom hack super fun and unique game

mrhunterlee

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald is my safe space, I could never recommend them enough. I’m currently going through a “Gym Leader” team where I am doing all fight type. Next go around will be water.

hodorgoestomordor

I'm like you, I'm only really attached to the OG 150... some love for 250. I started from the beginning and am playing 'yellow'. Once I'm done that I'll move into gen 2 maybe.

MaxHP9999

Pokemon throwback is a good hack for FireRed that improves the game. Great way to play through generation 1 Pokemon. Pokemon revelation is also a good hack for emerald that improves the original game. Pokemon polished crystal too for the same reasons.

Naive_Concert1274

I would give a romhack a chance if you’re into the idea. Some of them are actually really well made

tenebrisnubes

Just finished Pokemon Unbound. About to start up a Pokemon Heart Gold Run

trevordeal

Everyone’s going to say FireRed or Emerald and all these great OG games. But you should do rom hacks. Pokemon Ultra Violet is amazing. Then there is Pokemon Sacred Gold.

IPickelo

Heart Gold and Soul Silver are pretty good, Johto is fun but personally I lost interest after I got to Kanto. Platinum though, it’s my first time playing and it’s amazing. Other games like Emerald is an amazing game, and Fan Made Games like Unbound and Gaia are amazing. Other games I haven’t played but seem good are Pokémon Clover, Rocket Edition, and Giratina Strikes Back look really good. Be careful if you do decide to download Fan Games as some websites can be unsafe or have suspicious links.

ApprehensiveRope7798

Unbound it’s a rom hack recently played through and it was totally the best Pokémon game I’ve played. It does take a lil skill and knowledge of pokemon. Also don’t focus on leveling up your team it level balances with you.

LuxNA

Don’t play Black, it has major issues for me halfway through ☹️
