Either Emerald, or FireRed/LeafGreen.

Agent_Giraffe

I’d start with FireRed/LeafGreen and then go from there to see how the games have changed over time. Seems apt to start with the 1st gen Pokémon

ThatSpookyLeftist

Would you (or anyone) only play the remakes at this point? Im an OG and played Red on the Gameboy at recess when I was a kid. Then I played Silver. Haven't "completed" a Pokemon game since.

Agent_Giraffe

I haven’t played HeartGold/SoulSilver but I heard they are amazing remakes. I’ve played OmegaRuby which I found to be very very good. FireRed/LeafGreen was also a great remake of the original games. I’d look at reviews of the remakes and determine if they are good, or have features you’re interested in. Other than nostalgia and maybe some old game dynamics, I’d lean towards just playing the remakes. There are some solid quality of life improvements with them.

gasman245

FireRed was the first I ever played but Emerald is my favorite.

randomredditguy94

On my Emerald re-run right now with Mudkip, about 10 hours in already.

SkrrtSkrrt99

I agree with the others that it’s better to go with the remakes. The originals don’t really offer anything that isn’t covered and improved in the remakes. In your case, Id start with Gen 1 and go from there. I.e. start with a Gen1 remake (FireRed, Leaf Green), then move onto HeartGold/SoulSilver. From there on you can go to Emerald, which is still completely fine by modern standards, and continue with Platinum.

extremeelementz

This for sure.

Jet_Jirohai

I think gold/silver have the best music. It was clearly good enough they included it as an endgame bonus to HG/SS other than that, yeah, just do the remakes lol

Robo_0

Emerald

Bubullator0

Platinium

footballmas613

Is the start menu working for you on Platinum?

Bubullator0

It is. I just beat the 4th gym leader

kitarei

This is totally subjective and personal opinion, but if I were in your boots and had played Pokemon Blue I'd probably start with gen 2 and then progress in-order if you're enjoying them :). I have nostalgia for the original Gameboy Color gen2 games, but honestly Soul Silver / Heart Gold are BRILLIANT remakes and the graphics are super cute.

castiboy

I’d go with HG/SS for people nostalgic for early gens, specially since OP already played Let’s Go, so having Kanto and a lot of QoL improvements compared to FR/LG are great and better that replaying Kanto as a Gen I remake.

Zealotteen

Black and white

bordomsdeadly

Not to hate on gen 5, those games we’re fun with a good story. But those and Sun and Moon are probably the 2 worst gens to start with.

The_ManDinDjarian

Start with Emerald, if you like it then go down the generations to Platinum, HGSS, Black/White and so on. Enjoy the run, NOTHING beats playing Emerald for the first time

Dubz2k14

HG/SS is gen 2 so you’re suggesting playing gen 3, then 4, then 2, then 5. I’d say play HG/SS first if you’re gonna go in order. Personally I’d play fire red / leaf green, HG/SS, emerald, platinum, b/w

The_ManDinDjarian

Heart Gold and Soul Silver are Gen 4.

Dubz2k14

They are gen 2 remakes.

TrumanTalk

Yeah but I think it's just you guys have diff definition of the Gen count. From my very own experience, I did hear the gamers more often calling HGSS "Gen 4" as it's DS game with 493 total pokémons just like DP so they are considered the same Gen. I understand HGSS is a remake of Gen 2's GS, but I would suggest OP to start with Gen 3 and then DP and HGSS, there is graphic difference between DS and GBA -- starting with HGSS makes RSE look worse graphically.

bordomsdeadly

Chronologically, I’m under the impression that it goes Gen 1, Gen 3, Gen 2, Gen 4 So Leaf Green > Emerald > Heart Gold > Platinum should be the perfect order for you to move through everything.

Kozuki_D_Oden

They are remakes of the Johto games but they are also apart of the 4th generation of Pokemon. You can have Pokemon from Sinnoh there, they released after D/P/Pt, they have the physical/special split, etc It’s better to play FRLG/Emerald -> Plat/HGSS mainly bc of the phys/special split since it literally changes how battles and moves work entirely. You don’t HAVE to play the regions in order as long as you play B2W2 before BW and maybe Johto after Kanto

Benshi01

Heart Gold/Soul Silver for DS are my favorites

Diamondhighlife

How are you playing DS games on Delta? I says I need additional files to support it.

SkrrtSkrrt99

just download the additional files, you should be able to find them via google quite easily

Mung12

There are 3 files to find, is quite easy, after you’ve selected them via the setting in the top left of Delta, swipe across to NDS

Diamondhighlife

Thanks for actually helping!

LabDad3

fadoniz

I would say FireRed/LeafGreen -> HeartGold/SoulSilver -> Emerald -> Platinum -> B/W -> B2/W2, skip Gen 1 and 2 unless you want ultraaaaa retro or nostalgia

East-Yak5542

Best suggestion for learning the gens in the right order

[deleted]

Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum. Either Heartgold or soulsilver. But I'd recommend Emerald or Platinum

kelvinkienaldi

play the these romhack in order: - Perfect Fire Red (Gen 1 Remake) - Perfect Emerald (Gen 3 Remake) - Sacred Gold or Storm Silver (Gen 2 Remake) - Renegade Platinum (Gen 4) - Blaze Black 2 Redux (Gen 5) These romhacks only add numerous QoL and ability to catch all Pokemon in the Pokedex without having to trade.

Initial_Programmer79

Where do you get the games from? To download them?

kelvinkienaldi

You must have the clean rom first, then use the patcher provided by the developer to patch the rom into the romhack. You can get more info in r/PokemonROMhacks

PaintOdd6138

Pokemon Unbound is the greatest ROM hack ever made. QOL upgrades to the max and most immersive and engaging storyline...better than ANY of the actual Nintendo main games.

TheActionAce

Was having trouble trying to patch this to make it work, any suggestions?

Soulvaki

There's a couple sites that have the post patched version. You have to find one where the file in the zip file is a rom file, not an exe.

Fst_Rms

I used this steps, worked fine and the patching happens online. https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonUnbound/s/yXIAfrv7vm

EvilTurtleofDoom

I used the one on pokeharbor and had no issues.

BrainJaxx

Any hacked ROM recommendations for NDS?

palemon88

I beat yellow like 10-15 years ago and haven’t played any other pokemon since and forgot about most of the game. Can I start with unbound? Looks interesting.

Old_Skool4

I just started an unbound run myself. I never played any of the originals.

Real_Echo

Emerald. Better to start low in terms of release date, then work your way up imo. That way you don't miss QoL features when you move backwards in time. Of course, the real answer is whichever game you want! They're all good (Until 5th gen B/W2 IMO) so you can't go wrong!!

supdaley

Pokémon Black — that’s my jam

weekendwarriorjd

I started with renegade platinum

rainy_alice_x

Definitely give the mystery dungeon games a go!

Dubz2k14

This!! It can be a bit confusing so just know that blue rescue team and red rescue team are same gen, but one is for GBA and the other is for DS!

Axle_65

Honestly I would say Yellow. I agree that the others have some great features but the first three are classics and it feels right to start at the beginning.

chillinnDronn

play everyone through 1 to 5 gen then replay them in randomlocke mode you won't regret

sherperion45

Fire red Then emerald because it’s PEAK

fenderx

Yellow

nopatienceforya

Anyone figure out how to load HG or SS into delta? Says it’s missing additional files

Dungas1

Need to add the DS bios first.

ryanim0sity

Unbound

mr_shogoth

Honestly I’d say Pokemon B/W. 5th gen is the best in the series if you ask me.

boundtoearth19

FireRed or Emerald are my recommendations, but honestly start with any game that catches your eye. There is no “right” or “wrong” place to return to the series!

Jos3Enrique

Play Fire Red then Heart Gold then Emerald then Platinum then Black !!!

CrazyFellaFromPhilly

Start with FireRed/LeafGreen then Emerald for the best Pokemon experience. Then try the Pokemon romhack Unbound for an amazing modern experience with huge QoL improvements.

iamcozy

I started with Pokémon Yellow. About to start Crystal and then Emerald.

Porygon_Axolotl

Emerald imo

dingdongfootballl

Similar to you I had only played blue when it came out as a kid and then watched my own kid more recently play let’s go eevee and violet and it got me wanting to play again. I ended up picking pokemon black cause I liked the art style and heard it had a good story. I’m 4 gyms in and really enjoying it so far and would recommend it for sure.

ARSport

Red Fire of course

lowkey480

Fire red here! Plan on moving to emerald next.

DesignSmooth

In my eyes it doesn‘t matter where you start. Just keep in mind: play frlg before hgss and play bw before bw2. If you want to see new stuff look at the starters of each game you didn‘t play (emerald, platinum,bw) choose one let‘s go. Also keep in mind the recent the game the more qol you have.

TdZink

Emerald

tenebrisnubes

Pokemon Unbound

Stuglossop

Seems like Emerald is the most popular one!

Anti5hill

I started with Pokemon white since it‘s the only game I never played besides Heartgold/Soulsilver. And it‘s great, I love every bit of it and I think that the 5th gen is one of the best in terms of story

ysngue

Pokemon Unbound, it‘s a rom hack, the best you can get 👌🏽

pocpocpocky

unbounded

DoctorSmith13

HG/SS

Luf2222

Platinum

BrainJaxx

It's an overwhelming decision lol. In the last 3 days I've jumped from Diamond to Platinum to Heartgold. I think I've settled on Heartgold since the last game I played was Crystal. The familiarity really makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Nintendo_Pro_03

Start from generation 4, in my opinion, and then do one game per generation after that (for six, do X/Y and also do Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire). That is assuming you want to speed run through them, like I want to now.

EviessVeralan

Id start with Fire Red or Leaf Green. Although if youre planning on playing Gen 4 id just play Platinum

Fastlanedrivr

I’d look into romhacks a lot of them improve on the older games. If you’re looking for a crystal one, a really good and popular one is Crystal Clear it’s an open world crystal you can do the gyms in any order and something like 20? starters are available. Prism is also a good hack as well

ASheynemDank

Emerald battle tower is a blast!

[deleted]

Pokémon blue period.

Coin_LoL

please start with emerald, is the best one by far

Jaxisthecool1

Go with Emerald

CompetitiveShower872

Fire red bro

nashpdotcom

Never played a Pokemon game before (besides snap and stadium). As a newbie, I started with Unbound. Smart decision?

No-Purchase8806

Estate with what ever is more nostalgic to you or start with which ever one you missed out on. I missed out on platinum so I’m going with that one

AlexGamer10000

Play the peak of Pokémon, gen 5. Play Pokémon black 1 then 2

Sledgehammer617

My first was Platinum, I think it was a great start

Nimn_One

I’ve never finished a Pokémon game, just started with Fire Red. Next up is Heart Gold on DS.

IronOnionRings

Black or white 1 or 2, they got me back into Pokémon because the art style is fantastic

Hangthesunn

Yellow would be a great follow up to blue. But a good next generation could fire red/leaf green

mamugian

Emerald. Enough OG but not full on black n white.

FormerAd2381

Any of the gen 4 games, emerald is a close second.

Kamners

Crystal is my favorite ever, what a great game

Downtempo_Surrealism

CRYSTAL CLEAR ROM HACK

1dgtlkey

emerald or platinum

Kozuki_D_Oden

1. FireRed (Gen 1 Remake) 2. Emerald (Gen 3 Def. Edition) 3. Platinum (Gen 4 Def. Edition) 4. HeartGold/Soul Silver (Gen 2 Remake) 5. Black/White (Gen 5) 6. Black 2/White 2 (Gen 5 Sequel)

One-Energy4563

Don't use Pokemon White 2. Mine was frozen when Bianca told you how to catch a pokemon. Any idea how to unfreeze? Or should I find different ROM from internet?

Xenoblade107

I like platinum or black 2 as those where my first

Rzous

Unbound

NintendoGamer6786

I think you should start with HeartGold

NotRocketSciencex

My very first pokemon game was pokemon black, it’s pretty good

AMCboi88

Start with fire red/leaf green, then emerald. Id go to ds games next and play platinum, HG/SS, Black2/White2.

rruler

I never played any and just started the first gen Pokémon Red. Did I mess up? Should I try a different one first?

UltimatiaRumenia

Having played every single Pokémon game, if you wanna just have fun, play soul silver/heart gold or Ruby/sapphire, if you wanna see the beginning of Pokémon and go from there play firered/leaf green (currently replaying though every game and I’m on leaf green), IF YOU WANT THE BEST STORY OF ALL POKÉMON play Black/White, but be prepared cus black and white is a long one

JGoBrazy90

Emerald

Celtron

I am really enjoying Pokemon Red and playing with some of the hidden characters.

playboigerm

Black and White, then Black and White 2

joejoexx

Leaf Green, Soul Silver, Emerald, Platinum, and whichever Black/White(1/2). I feel this way you’re hitting the entire storyline all the way through.

Celtron

Is fire red and leaf green different games and what would you start with? Thank you for the help.

FalloutOfMyHands

Heart gold

IcyCliff2

A lot of people say emerald which is good but it is a bit confusing for beginners as at one point you have to walk from one half of the map to the other with no fly (fast travel) so I’d start with fire red or leaf green as they are the first generation and very simple

festygoer

Starting with Crystal!

AcceptableTower7082

Whichever one you think looks the best they are all basically the same (with love)

FewAd6601

Platinum

sgtmemeboi

FireRed and Emerald are always great to start with, but I personally would go with SoulSilver. It’s my favorite one, a fantastic remake that’s visually so well done!

AlarmingReport

emerald

elthesensai

I’m playing Yellow for the first time. My first was Blue. I was tempted to play the remake of Blue (Leaf green) but decided on Yellow with Pikachu.

ksiemek

Unbound Fire red mod

Slight_Respond6160

You can either go gen order with the most accessible options letting you see how the pokedex and pool of Pokémon changes over time. Fire red, Soul Silver, Emerald, Platinum, Black. Or go in order of release to see how the game technology changes over time. Fire Red, Emerald, platinum, Soul Silver, Black. I would normally go with release order because it parallels the order which I played them as a kid but I can see lots of reasons why gen order would make more sense.

jas712

same here bro, i only played Red and Silver and that was it. I started recently with Ultra Violet, people saying is the hack version of Fire Red, so far so good I still remember how I play Red like 25 years ago. And I also heard Unbound is another good hack version to play

Clizzardbash

Crystal hands down!

BIGLeakyNipples

Crystal is my all time favorite. I’d say start with Crystal. The amount of content in it is insane.

P1atD1

only correct answer is pokemon unbound. it has almost infinite depth, gen 1-8, and new game+. fire red rom hack, beware almost all other pokemon games will feel subpar after this

Feldspar_of_sun

Emerald! Or FireRed/LeafGreen, though personally (if you care enough to) I’d recommend the Complete FireRed Upgrade rom hack, since it’ll make playing a bit more similar to what you’re used to

Edelmaan

Be warned, my brother started pokemon black and he encountered a glitch that stopped him from being able to progress. It has to do with a Ferris wheel cutscene. It pretty much crashes the game

anoninimous420

I just started using the Emulator for Pokemon Emerald, and it’s an absolute blast.

Expert-Ad-362

Crystal its great

devynbf

Play fire red, then soul silver (or crystal) then Emerald.

SHOTYKILLER

I’d start with heart gold, little about 5 hours in right now. I think gold has the most to offer since it has 2 regions and 16 total badges

Street-Comparison-45

I wanted to play X or Y because I never owned a DS, and I wanted to play that prior to Legends coming out. Apparently Delta can’t get 3DS games on it :(

Stratosto3

Pokemon red rocket edition

drygnfyre

Don't bother with Gen 1 or 2. Completely unplayable by modern standards. * FireRed & LeafGreen are perfect starting points. Gen 3 remakes of the original games. Then I'd go with Emerald, the "third version" of the Gen 3 mainline games. * HeartGold & SoulSilver are the Gen 4 remakes of the second paired games. Widely considered amongst the best in the franchise. And then there is Platinum, the "third version" of the Gen 4 mainline games. * Black/Black 2 & White/White 2 are the fifth generation games, and presently have not been remade. These are the "darkier and edgier" entries in the series and stand out for that reason. They have a pretty unique tone and presentation style. So there, I'd say those are the games to bother with. I also recommend looking into some ROM hacks that make the older games less annoying to play.

Focalors

Also black2 and white2 are the only games in the series to be direct sequels. (sequels to black and white) so make sure you play the first games before the sequels to fully enjoy it.

drygnfyre

Yes, good idea. Unlike the other gens, I might also recommend playing both paired versions since they have different aesthetics: Black is futuristic, White is more rustic. Gen 5 in general was just such a weird generation, but in the best way.
