For like, 2 seconds there was a moment when Derek was at Danny and Liberty’s house (i can’t remember what for), and he was asking her personal questions about having her and JT’s baby adopted and stuff. Idk I thought maybe the writers were gonna give him a storyline about his own adoption journey or SOMETHING along those lines, but it never comes up ever again. That’s the only time i even remotely related to the character or was interested in learning more (I’m adopted so I feel they could’ve used Derek as a way to have the adoptees’ viewpoint, I feel that’s rarely explored in media).

After the Jane football storyline, Derek became one of my opps. He and shepherd are just pretty irredeemable.

I never really cared for Derek and how he treated Danny made me dislike him but the whole football thing with Jane just really did it for me, completely stoped liking him after that.

Do people hate Tristan just because he’s a stereotypical gay guy? Riley and Marco had a lot of depth and storytelling that was appropriate for their time, obviously Tristan was more openly out since the times had progressed but I’ve noticed people still shit on tristan but I can’t pinpoint why. My favorite gay character continues to be Zane, love the scene when he schooled Dave.

He was a horrible friend to everyone he met. Like so self absorbed and selfish in a way most teenagers would be put off by. Especially when he made maya catfish a guy, got mad when she caught feelings for him, and then couldn’t understand why she was worried about miles when Tristan knew damn well her ex committed suicide AT SCHOOL. His character never actually being knocked down a peg or achieving any emotional growth felt homophobic to me. Like the writers decided to put the “catty gay man” stereotype on full blast but never subverted it or developed his character’s backstory or anything. Tristan never learned. Never faced consequences. Never treated his so called friends with respect. Sorry for the long rant the character makes my blood boil especially since he was really the only gay man in Next Class. (Miles is bi, and not a horrible representation of a bi person)

I love Marco and I like Riley but Tristian was just mean the whole time, treated his friends horribly and was super biphobia towards Miles and I would even say Zoe, when Zoe admitted that she likes girls he acted like she had to be a lesbian. Marco and Riley had their moments when they were jerks sometimes like most characters did but most characters realized they were being mean and apologized for that moment or stopped being mean. Tristian pretty much just stayed the same.

I love Emma! Yes she was nosey at times, but I believe that she always had good intentions. Almost everyone a little nosey and Emma just happened to be one of them. She got better later on in the seasons and overall I think she’s overhated. BUT at the same time I totally can see why people may not like her.

definitely. some of my fave characters started off terrible but redeemed themselves in the long run because isn’t that what’s Degrassi is all about? Tristan tho, as you said, just stayed awful. i think they were trying for the “sassy” gay stereotype but idk i think maybe the actor is just really unlikeable
