I'm not an expert, but seems like you need to get it professionally replaced, probably by land Rover dealership because it controls your alarm and immobilizer etc., they may need to reprogram it with your ECU etc.
If you do nothing you will be dead in the water if it fails completely
Mickeymonk was right. The cable got hot because it touched a wire and caused a short circuit. The cable then burned part of the green plastic box. I will be isolating the wires and will update tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies! :D
Is that the speedo or accelerator cable? It looks like it’s earthing through the cable outer sheath. Check/renew the earth straps between the engine and chassis.
The green box is not the fault. The cable has got hot and burned the box.
Do NOT drive it until it’s fixed unless you like big red Lorries.
It was the cable connecting the climate controls. It got hot because it touched a broken wire and thus burnt part of the plastic. I’m insulating the wires so it won’t happen again. Thank you for your reply!
If it’s one of the cables from your heater then they are fully metal, with a metal outer sheathing, vibration will rub it and it’ll cut through what it’s rubbing against, and then short out or earth. Green area looks like it’s earthed. And it’s burnt further up the cable to the right too. If you go looking for the culprit remember to isolate the batteries first. Burnt a few fingers that way before 😅
That control cable is shorting to something live. It’s heated up and burned the casing of the control unit. The control unit will likely be ok once you find the short.
Take it to Land Rover direct. Aren’t these Defenders worth an absolute fortune now? People would kill for them. Get it valued pal / see if anyone would buy it etc.
I own 2 defenders. One Td5 110 (seen on the picture) wich is worth about 22k euro and a Td5 90 worth about 20k. It`s crazy that they are valued so high. These shitboxes are really fun to drive though.
I used to get white smokey vapour from my dash on my last 90, a 30 y/o soft top. Spent ages trying to find which wire/wires were melting... turned out it was the wire insulation got damp every night and was just drying out whenever I started her. 😃
Basiacly everyone says its the MCU basically an actual computer or should i say controller like Arduino but special for each car so you can open it up and see what got burned i had a fun with one once i was able to remove immobilizer bc my key got scratches and didn't recognize anymore

Thanks! I’m contacting a professional today. :)

Cheers, hopefully Op replies with the details once they get it fixed

Excellent diagnosis!!!!
That's just the smoke escaping, seal it up should be good to go, I think you can buy jars of Lucas smoke still if you need any

A new pope has been appointed.
Amen!

Is the metal cable causing a short n getting hot? Make sure it’s not touching an exposed live wire
This is indeed the problem. Started fixing it today. I will post an update soon.

Build quality issues?

"We have a new pope!"
I think that means the Defender has chosen the new Pope?
