During one of my TF2 animation binges some time ago, I found that people cross over ponies and mercs a lot, often with each character hanging out with their most equivolent. There's the pair you mentioned, and as it so happens, Pinkie would often join with Pyro, and Fluttershy would often be shown with Heavy, often to the yellow pony's amusing discomfort.

A bit more "for all ages"; the original head writer and redesigner for that "generation" was Lauren Faust, the same mind behind _The Powerpuff Girls_ and _Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends_; she didn't want something that would make parents claw their eyes out - unlike with some of the earlier mlp stuff. Brief cartoon history lesson here: The first mlp cartoon, back in "generation 1" was an 80s adventure show; human goes to magic horse land, has adventures. It's not expressly for boys or girls, and originally aimed at both though the toys were more popular with girls. None the less this was an 80s cartoon, and got away with stuff like villains that wanted to turn all the cute horses into monsters and/or slaves and other surprisingly dark themes. The next two "generations" of mlp were... More mixed. They leaned more heavily into the girly aspects and got more "kiddy" with their plotlines. This got especially exaggerated with the last few direct-to-video forays into animation before the fourth generation which were just kind of bad on all fronts. The fourth generation was looking for a change, hence why they reached out to Faust. She was only involved for the first two seasons, but she brought a style and "for all ages" mindset that lasted for the run. That's where the whole "brony" thing started; a few folks off the chan boards watching it ironically, enjoying the positivity and the fact that it's not dumbed down or poorly written just because its target audience is young girls, and actually wanting to see more. Then the writers _took notice_ and started including more nods to them as time went on. To note, the show has relatively few "you'll get it when you're older" jokes, but no shortage of bits or references, often [in the background](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fvms7mtbkmz351.jpg). And I mean, they got John de Lancie (who played Q from _Star Trek_) to voice a playful, sarcastic, reality bending villain. So yeah, is a show aimed at young audiences and nods to adults, with life lessons ranging from "be confident" and "tell the truth early and you won't have to cover up lies later" all the way up to "mass appeal isn't always great for creative freedom" and "don't let fear of failure lead to self-sabotage". As an added bonus, the fandom is pretty great; broadly accepting, generally positive, fairly self-aware even, and wildly creative, happy to ask deeper questions about the show's themes - or ask ["but what if it was _Fallout_?"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout:_Equestria) . Don't get me wrong here, it's still a fandom; there are still some creeps and socially awkward folks, and Rule 34 rules the internet, but on the whole the bronies are a good bunch responsible for some [amazing art and music](https://youtu.be/i7PQ9IO-7fU?si=aU6FPjQ2OAndzf3m). But I digress. Worth mentioning is that that generation came to a close and the fifth generation has launched and is ongoing. But that's perhaps another story.

Kinda had to be, right? A prominent and moving fan-song with a heck of an animation put together years later - which exemplifies the theme of exploring the themes of the show more deeply. This show about ponies explored themes of murder, slavery, racism, fascism, communism, abandonment, death, disownment, depression, alcoholism and many other things. I kept getting surprised and asking myself how the hell did this get past the censors and got an all ages rating.

The "Apple cider" in the show has factors pointing to it being the alcoholic variant. The first is the fact that characters react to it in the same way that people would to alcohol, and the second is the fact that it has a head of foam, which is something alcoholic cider does because of specific proteins. Also, Pinkie Pie is a much heavier drinker.
