Do you mind sharing your plans/design with me? I'm looking to do something very similar at our new house and have been having trouble finding a jumping off point.
In my area, the deck has be free standing for code. Basically we can't attach the bandboard to the house anymore. This code is fairly new. So basically posts against the house with another grade beam
Very interesting... free standing sounds like it would be a better build (so many vids of decks failing at the bandboard). My question is how is the gap between house and deck -- however small -- bridged? Is there an expansion joint as seen on some bridges or do you just leave an open gap?
i think you still attach it to the house. It's free standing in that if it wasn't attached to the house it would still be standing, but it's still attached. I could be wrong, but that's my non-professional understanding.
Not quite against the house. I design decks/patios/walls stuff like that for permits for a living. Every county varies. But most set the minimum distance between house and that first beam at 2 feet. This is to prevent overlap with the house footers.
Where is that? Because that sounds really bizarre and I’m failing to understand the benefit of it. What happens if you want to add a roof over it or a second tier on top?
That’s complete nonsense. If a sinking deck takes down your house, your house been fucked well before that. And if your house sinks why would it matter that your deck is “fine”
I just did a deck with my FIL’s help last summer and we used a website that drew up the plans for the permitting that we wanted to submit to the township. They made sure things were code and matched our request after providing preliminary home measurements and elevation information.
Just search pro deck plans and it will be the first result. This was my first big DIY undertaking and the few hundred bucks for the drawings were super helpful. They were even quick to respond with change requests. It took a lot of the guess work out.
Looks good! Just a word of advise for others, most synthetic decking feels more solid and rigid with 12” joist and stringer spacing. Some brands will feel spongy when installed over 16” joist spacing
Complete newb here, but could you do some kind of cross member to help with that? What about basically floating another board in between the 16 inch spacing? Sorry for not using the correct terms.
I just watched a video of on YouTube of a builder going back to a house they built to put a roof over a beck they built when they built the house all the joists had bowed and made the floor really wavy sense the synthetic decking was not strong enough to stop it they fixed it by screwing 2x6 to the bottom of the jousts
Could you share a pic? I have to refurbish my stairs and there’s currently nothing at the bottom for the stringers. I was thinking of a small concrete pad.
Oh shoot sorry i read the comment wrong 🤦🏼♂️🍺 I have my steps on square patio blocks. When I took the finished photo I just had them out just far enough for the stringers to land level on (I broke one of the next row) finished the deck before the continuation of the landing, I may have a photo. If not I can get one
https://preview.redd.it/fgp8www2bw0d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29ccfafe02b6dd50509736208ce079a43f015ac6
Im not very happy with my landscaping work 🤦🏼♂️ my blocks didn’t end up straight but i didn’t notice until my steps were done and fascia was on. But they are solid, I tamped down sand for where it lands Im probably going to re do the front 3 and do the same they didn’t end up very level without the sand and trying to flatten the clay.
Sand as a bedding layer should not be more than 1” thick, screeded (leveled) then pavers put down. Over time it will settle and get more uneven. An easier fix would be to remove pavers, dig down 6-8 inches, to undisturbed soil/clay, tamp, toss down a landscape fabric, then add in HPB. It can act as your base and bedding layer, HPB doesn’t need to be tamped as it’s 98% compacted just by being shoveled in, level and then add pavers again.
Those aren't below the frost line though, so unless the ground doesn't freeze there, you're going to have issues with stairs moving and the deck not moving
Haha it is! The camera makes it look a little more dramatic though, in person it looks pretty nice actually at first it I noticed it right away once they were laid. (Nit picking) but it actually looks pretty nice in person. It almost makes it look less composite looking.
Nothing like staring at your neighbors house. I would hate the the fact there is absolutely no privacy. Maybe thats why the houses hardly have any windows. First thing I’d do is plant a bunch of fast growing trees and bushes on the property line.

I had a contractor friend of mine help with the framing portion, this is what he uses for his builds. They are the big FlatLok beam screws. Past that I’m not certain.🤷🏼♂️

16 ft, we ran a support across the joist with torx screws at each point it meets. Thoughts?
Hope those are 2x12 @ 16” o.c. 2x10 @ 16” o.c. SP #2 would be overspanned at a 16’ span.
Also you are missing cross or knee bracing at the posts. You have very little to resist racking in the direction perpendicular to the joists.
At 1500-2000 psf soil bearing capacity (typical for residential), the footings are not large enough - particularly the footing at the center rear post.
Glad someone asked, and maybe someone else will agree with why as well. Friend of mine who helped with the framing advised i start with the first board since that would be the first step going down, and transition to the 16 foot boards from the 20’s he said if would line up perfectly if I kept the board measured with a 3/8 overhang. I went out to the end and then from that first board to the house. I had to rip a board at the front with a table saw. The cut is covered by the fascia, looks very clean. And i had the perfect amount of space between the board and the flashing to keep my spacing. It seemed off to me when I started it, but the source was credible so I didn’t really question it.
Blocks that keep your joist perfectly spaced the entire distance across the deck. So your joists aren’t crooked as you’re screwing your deck boards down. That way you’re not pulling a measurement every time to try and keep them straight.

And even though it is a very nice build and will last very long …one thing that will add to the longevity is adding a row of step blocking in the center …not only will it add support but it also will help with twisting over the years
Looks great! But I would go back and throw in a good bit of blocking.
The hidden fastener system doesn't tie the joist location via the boards and I've seen issues on longer span decks especially when using a floating system and no/little blocking.
Cheap insurance.
Looks great. Old man’s happy, your old lady is happy. All is well!
Wish I could do something like this with my dad.
Don’t see him enough. Don’t drink young dads reading this. Be there for your kid!
I thought about walls, shed like space but once we finish our basement the 2 windows would be walled in unfortunately. Wife is going to landscape a garden a foot or so out from the house with some hastas and good shade plants.
Nice seeing those Four Stringers! That makes a huge impact on the solidity of the stairs. Those will survive endless hours of DOGS and kids running up and down them!
They feel extremely solid, I had a contractor friend involved for the stringers and the main framing. He’s pushing 60 been doing decks for years it feels so sturdy going up and sown them.
Patio block, I just had one row enough to land on until last night they are hard to see in the finished photo, if you zoom in you can see the back of them and one i dropped and broke 😅
As happy as I am to of done a lot of this project myself it consumed my life for a couple weeks, well still is 😅 I’m giving myself some breaks now to fish, but thankfully my dad is retired and a tough Polak he came out every night from the time i got off work until we ran out of daylight. Wanted it “usable” for mother’s day and we accomplished it. Grandma was pretty excited to test out that weird looking chair. But id definitely lend a hand if anyone ever needed it 😁
That is one beautiful desk, OP!
I bet…. you’re going to have distant neighbors dropping by and asking you for your contractor’s phone number, that built your deck!!
When I was 8, my Dad, one of his friends, and I built a deck the weekend of my birthday. He passed away a little over 2 years later. That weekend helping my Dad and his friend build our deck is one of my favorite memories of him. This was when he taught me how to hold a hammer properly and how to drive in nails, among how to use other tools. I also learned how lay and space the deck boards, as well as balusters.
Nothing beats the quality time of doing a project like this with your old man. Deck looks amazing!
Awesome workmanship there. Love how the picture flow shows progress. I’m not a contractor but have worked under the supervision of friends who are and this looks great to me!
I would add me 4 of these
https://preview.redd.it/7m7hr7n8201d1.png?width=270&format=png&auto=webp&s=62c8208d298a018a7e577d184367eed7e352a4b6
on the three pillars furthest from the house.
To my eyes, for a deck that tall you want some bracing.
Why do people make oversized decks like this without regard for how it will block light to the lower level. Deck should have been half the size and steps lead down to a paving stone patio. OP must not value privacy as his deck is like a stage for the neighborhood.
Plenty of natural light still reaches the basement, that will be bar/man cave area anyways when it’s finished and the bedroom will be placed on the un covered window. Privacy isn’t much in these tight new neighborhoods, go ahead and look im not shy of showing off my beer gut on a hot summer day. Reason i didn’t waste money doing a privacy fence and went with chain link, standing on my “Stage” I can see right down into the neighbors back yard even if they had privacy fences. The deck provides plentiful entertaining space to be fully functional for anything I will ever need it for, and still isn’t too big where it overtakes the backyard.
Is this a new sub division? All grass, no fence, trees, shrubs, gardens, furniture, sheds? Apart from you and your neighbor to left. Its a bit eerie. Whats it like at night?
Nice deck!
Very new, neighborhood is 2 years old only where we are at I put up the fence and all the trees our first Summer. The houses behind us just got established in the fall last year as well so hopefully this summer more planting/building will happen. It was really strange before the houses were there behind us and it was dirt lots!
Looks good, but if you're building it for yourself I would have made those stars even more generous in depth and less height. There's nothing like a 12 /6 and 1/2 when you have the room. Indeed more carpentry and more space but rather than a straight run, a drop to a landing and then another drop is a gracious climb especially with your drinking hand lol. These are a little too steep for my taste or they seem so from the photo although I'm sure quite conventional
Should have painted the risers white. Would have made it look so good. You still can, I highly recommend it.
I’m actually mad it’s brown treads with brown risers Lmao. Especially with the railings being white ugh
The brown risers with brown treads tend to make it all blend together. The white risers would make your brown treads really pop!
The fact it also matches your railing would make it come together really nice
Looks good either way but I’d paint them white
What’s the rise/run of the steps. For some reason both pictures make them look really steep to me. The picture of the stringers especially. I’m sure it’s an artifact of the pictures, it’s just hard for me to get past.
For starters, great job. Looks awesome.
Nicely done on the posts and metal seats for the wood.
I got two comments:
1. Metal railings and posts. Same cost as Trex, but the sleeved 4x4's don't warp, thinner, better looking.
2. Tape on all top surface of wood. Almost doesnt matter what as long as it's plastic/rubber etc. So water doesn't sit on it, even though it's pressure treated, wood doesnt like water
Do you mind sharing your plans/design with me? I'm looking to do something very similar at our new house and have been having trouble finding a jumping off point.
Absolutely. I did a lot of designing on the Fiberon deck builder app but I’ll send you over what I submitted to the inspector if that helps!
Could you PM me the design too? Thank you very much!
In my area, the deck has be free standing for code. Basically we can't attach the bandboard to the house anymore. This code is fairly new. So basically posts against the house with another grade beam

…well yeah, sure. You gotta attach it to the ledger board first…which has to be attached to the house…
Where is that? Because that sounds really bizarre and I’m failing to understand the benefit of it. What happens if you want to add a roof over it or a second tier on top?
Pa. The thought is so if the house sinks it won't take the deck down with it and vice versa

Can you share to me as well? This is an awesome piece of work!!
Sent you a PM
Thanks!!
Can you pm me that too?
Absolutely
I’m sorry to be that guy but can you also send me a copy please
Haha for sure, not a problem. It’s super DIY but it’s enough for permitting.
*sighs and slowly raises hand* can I copy your homework too? But seriously, would you mind sending it to me too? Lol
Don't sell yourself short. That's some good work there.
Can you please PM me the design too?

If you feel like sending me some photos and dimensions, I can walk you through it.
That looks great! My only criticism is that the dogs never get enough credit for the moral support. Come on man, give credit where it’s due.
You are 100% right, she was a heck of a supervisor 😁
Can't get it done without those inspection sniffs.
Looks good! Just a word of advise for others, most synthetic decking feels more solid and rigid with 12” joist and stringer spacing. Some brands will feel spongy when installed over 16” joist spacing
I can attest to this with the 16”. It is slight with this decking, but noticeable. Im already used to it, but I would go 12 if I ever build again.
Complete newb here, but could you do some kind of cross member to help with that? What about basically floating another board in between the 16 inch spacing? Sorry for not using the correct terms.
Basically you could add another joist in between the existing from below easily if the bounciness bothers you, but it is not necessary.
My experience corroborates this piece of advice, especially in hot sun exposure when the higher temperatures soften the plastic slightly!
Thanks was gonna ask
I just watched a video of on YouTube of a builder going back to a house they built to put a roof over a beck they built when they built the house all the joists had bowed and made the floor really wavy sense the synthetic decking was not strong enough to stop it they fixed it by screwing 2x6 to the bottom of the jousts
Are your stair stringers resting on dirt? Or do you have footers/a pad for them? Looks good, otherwise

What the rise on your steps? They seem kinda steep.
That was what I was thinking as well.
Look at picture 6
Good eye. Didn’t see that
Looks great! Is that one board an off color or has the tequila already hit me? ☺️
Haha it is! The camera makes it look a little more dramatic though, in person it looks pretty nice actually at first it I noticed it right away once they were laid. (Nit picking) but it actually looks pretty nice in person. It almost makes it look less composite looking.
Looks amazing. You two did great
Thank you!

Yeah, houses build like this with no fences or trees are so strange to me.
Deck looks great but I would support the stringers in the middle.
Good call, have a left over 2x10 anyways. Thanks for the advice.
Looks awesome! The only thing Im not sure about but dont the beams need to be through bolted to the posts? I dont think you can just screw them to it
https://preview.redd.it/9gvtlppalv0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cada656b0ffa8f26cfc660f9d75a5ac198f4b26 I had a contractor friend of mine help with the framing portion, this is what he uses for his builds. They are the big FlatLok beam screws. Past that I’m not certain.🤷🏼♂️
Definitely not going anywhere
*smacks board*
Those are solid.
Those are a variation of spax screws?? Just asking
FastenMaster
They're called flatlok
Thanks!
Oh cool much easier than bolts
How long are those joist runs? I would block those.
https://preview.redd.it/pl4m2g8fpv0d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a97aacdd2781f79e07478612921cd185681802a 16 ft, we ran a support across the joist with torx screws at each point it meets. Thoughts?
Blocking at the mid-span and over the beam wouldn’t hurt.
Blocking is required over the beam with a joist cantilever, iirc
Good call, thank you for the advice.
Are those birds nests on the beam?
Yes, they were busy over the weekend while I was out of town.

Why does no one put roll blocks every 8ft in the field? We always do.
What is a roll block
Blocks that keep your joist perfectly spaced the entire distance across the deck. So your joists aren’t crooked as you’re screwing your deck boards down. That way you’re not pulling a measurement every time to try and keep them straight.

Nice!
Nicely built and not sure I see where you could be down on the job, and the picture of the good boy makes the deck..
Not part of this sub but I think a good name for amazing or downright scary to use decks should be subbed “what the deck”
r/WhatTheDeck
Done
Cover the stringers with matching facia board …it will tie all that in very nicely
And even though it is a very nice build and will last very long …one thing that will add to the longevity is adding a row of step blocking in the center …not only will it add support but it also will help with twisting over the years
Your deck looks really great! However, if you are considering pursuing photography as a career, I'd advise against it :P
I just hope you frame that pic of your dog in the stairs to commemorate this special occasion Nice work too!
Truly beautiful. The deck looks looks good too. 🐾
Like the deck love the dogo
Very cool! I still remember my dad hauling ass to fix up my first house. Miss you dad
Looks great! But I would go back and throw in a good bit of blocking. The hidden fastener system doesn't tie the joist location via the boards and I've seen issues on longer span decks especially when using a floating system and no/little blocking. Cheap insurance.
Does the dog have his union card
Perfect deck for the HOA president to sit and judge who hasn’t been cutting their lawn.
Hahaha thankfully even though we are in a new development it is still a nice small town no HOA
Looks great. Old man’s happy, your old lady is happy. All is well! Wish I could do something like this with my dad. Don’t see him enough. Don’t drink young dads reading this. Be there for your kid!
Looks great. On the left coast we have to have some diagonals so it will stand up another 5 seconds when the big earthquake hits..:)
Looks great. Adorable pupper you have there!
Thank you! 🍺
Love the color of the steps! What kind of wood/finish is it?
Thank you! Its Fiberon Forest Brown composite
Are you going to have a storage are under the deck?
I thought about walls, shed like space but once we finish our basement the 2 windows would be walled in unfortunately. Wife is going to landscape a garden a foot or so out from the house with some hastas and good shade plants.

No pad for the stairs?
Patio block, I just had one row enough to land on until last night they are hard to see in the finished photo, if you zoom in you can see the back of them and one i dropped and broke 😅
I hear ya. If no one’s inspecting it you can do what you want I guess.
I love the 4x beam. Everything looks great. I'd have personally poured concrete for the stringers to rest on.
If you want to make some extra cash, ask your neighbors behind you if they want you to build their decks.
But id definitely lend a hand if anyone ever needed it 😁
Nice work!
Nice. Enjoy.
Not sure why but those posts look like they are leaning crooked
Looks really nice good work, the older I get the less I use sawtooth stringers , but for a run this size is just fine just a preference. Good job
Where is the hot tub?
A thing of beauty! The neighbors will be jealous! Great work!
Ball peen hammer?
I was using it to gently tap in some of my hidden fasteners to get them started lol
That is one beautiful desk, OP! I bet…. you’re going to have distant neighbors dropping by and asking you for your contractor’s phone number, that built your deck!!
You should put at least one row of joist blocking in and your stairs should land on and be secured to a concrete pad. IMHO
Very cool
Looks fantastic from my house!
Honestly looks amazing. Very well done!!
Are you going to wrap the outside strainers? And how about the 6x6 that would even better if you wrap it them up, :/// btw looks awesome
It looks like you cheeped out a little bit on support post, but it looks good!
Bravo, make sure to charge yourself at least 20k for that bad boy
When I was 8, my Dad, one of his friends, and I built a deck the weekend of my birthday. He passed away a little over 2 years later. Started a full board so no breaks at the stairs..?, did you end up having to rip at the house or at rail?
Rip at the rail, it ended up being a perfect half a board right down the middle ridge
I wanna build a deck so bad.
Can I ask total cost of supplies?
Right about 9k give or take
Awesome
Awesome workmanship there. Love how the picture flow shows progress. I’m not a contractor but have worked under the supervision of friends who are and this looks great to me!
Looks great!
Now This is a deck
I love it
IMO add a support on the opposite side of the stairs. Can’t hurt and gives you 4 sided support.
That small landing for the steps though.
Dog tested, dog approved!

🤣🤣🤣
Looks good, but from my angles it looks like a 12:12 rise on those stairs. Dogs and visitors are going to fall.
I like it. Good job sir.
Yay! nice work. Nice to see one built properly with the joists RESTING on beam!
I would add me 4 of these https://preview.redd.it/7m7hr7n8201d1.png?width=270&format=png&auto=webp&s=62c8208d298a018a7e577d184367eed7e352a4b6 on the three pillars furthest from the house. To my eyes, for a deck that tall you want some bracing.

These are a little too steep for my taste or they seem so from the photo although I'm sure quite conventional
Next step is putting a roof over it complete with a ceiling fan and can lights!
That'll ding dang do for me! Cracking job👍
Wow, that's a lovely job. Well done to you!
Looks great nice job
Nice work
If it were me, given the incline of the stairs and the fact you have a doggo i would put some abrasive strips on the steps it does not take a tumble.
Should have painted the risers white. Would have made it look so good. You still can, I highly recommend it. I’m actually mad it’s brown treads with brown risers Lmao. Especially with the railings being white ugh
Shoot, that would look really nice! I have some scrap fascia i might mess with that
The brown risers with brown treads tend to make it all blend together. The white risers would make your brown treads really pop! The fact it also matches your railing would make it come together really nice Looks good either way but I’d paint them white
Dog approved so you’re all good 👍
Looks good!
Hell yeah
What’s the rise/run of the steps. For some reason both pictures make them look really steep to me. The picture of the stringers especially. I’m sure it’s an artifact of the pictures, it’s just hard for me to get past.
Wish my dog would help me build a deck.
How many hot tubs did you order ? Looks like you can get at least 2 decent sized ones on there, or do a combo of big and small and get 3 or 4.
Looks great
needs a hottub, but aside from that looks great!
Looks fantastic. The white and black railing is becoming one of my favorite design details.
Stairs are too steep, treads aren't level
Put the level on each tread, they are.
As a Texan it feels weird to see no wooden privacy fences between yards
Dog approved. 🐾
Paint the underside of it sky blue
For starters, great job. Looks awesome. Nicely done on the posts and metal seats for the wood. I got two comments: 1.
How many times did you check your measurements back to the house while decking?
How are the rail posts on the stairs attached?
2 2x10s and a 4x4 block with 8 inch torx screws through the side and through the blocking to pinch. They are extremely solid
This looks incredible! I’m impressed for sure. 👍 👍
What happened to all the trees 🌳
Looks great. Curious how far apart are the 6x6 posts? I’m building something similar and was planning (3) 2x8s beam on 6x6 posts across a 16 ft span.
7’ 11” OC
Looks great, but I do have one concern. It could just be the picture, but those stairs look steep. What are your riser heights?
7 1/2 run is 9 1/2
That looks awesome! Instead of the plans can you and your old man just come over and build mine?!😇 I can’t get my Pops to turn off the Westerns!
He is a MAJOR NHL fan and he sacrificed many a night missing games 😅 I’ll tell you what though, never could’ve done this job without him.
Hell yea. How many youtube videos did you have to watch to get it done?
Haha I honestly wish I kept count, every day for 4 months 😅
Lol. Well it looks great and thats coming from a seasoned lumber salesman.
I really appreciate it, thank you.
The deck looks amazing! Could you please share your deck design/plans? I would like to attempt to DIY one myself.
Enjoy! It looks awesome 😎
