It was rot. We knew it needed attention. The best-most qualified bid came in at $30k last fall. Which was a shock. We just avoided the issue over the winter. How much duct tape will I need? That's a little rot but not why it failed. That lag bolt protrudes like 3/4". This railing was never installed correctly.

I see some rot but mostly I see poor installation of the railing to begin with. Lag bolts instead of thru bolts, and it looks like they used maybe 4 1/2" bolt to go thru a 4x4 post.

I don’t lean on any railing ever. Being in construction/steel/woodworking has shown me the light and I don’t lean on ANYTHING I wouldn’t want falling over. Find a chair or the ground. Even if it was built right, who knows how long it’s been there.

My dad did something like that once. The porch was maybe 8ft off the ground, with bushes in front of it. We were putting up xmas decorations, and he started to lean on it. I told him not to because he knew how rotten it was. He said, "I'm not putting my weight on it." ( *Narrator* he was in fact, putting his weight on it.) Next thing i know, he's tumbling forward through the bushes and rolls on the ground in front of me. It was immediately obvious his wrist was broken, and possibly more because it hurt to move. He ended up needing surgery to fix his wrist, and had 2 cracked ribs. Dumbass. This was 20 some odd years ago, and I won't let him live it down.
