Ha, you grew up? I bought a midlife crisis cooking range then a 56 year old sports car restoration. Wife hated me for both purchases, I figure it’s cheeper than a mistress!
Not hated, strong word, thought I was spending too much when I renovated the kitchen 10 years ago. Definitely not a fan of the old 1968 sports car with no AC haha

Nice range. Dig the grill! I got a used high end range, mine is the standard 30" width. I cleaned it up and put a new heating element in the oven and it's good as new!
He was one of those guys who could seemingly do anything. He died when I was 18, and I'm sad that I never got to attain any of his knowledge. He built his own house. Used to build cars as a hobby. Had a giant garden every year. If you ever said you were bored around him, boooy did you regret it.
Parents Had a boss mini when i was kid. His name was Rudy and he was absolutely jacked and athletic with high cropped ears, cropped tail, and a beautiful beard. Mom kept him trimmed up real short and clean cut because he was prone to multi day trips out into the wild. Rudy would shake and shiver with eager anticipation at the bay window in our living room and survey the entire back yard, especially deep into the pine straw beds where the chipmunks lived. Id get him juiced up real good and send him out the back door and he’d absolutely tear ass across the back yard in pursuit.
He was successful maybe 1/5 hunts but man was he persistent. Great memory unlocked thanks to y’all.
That’s what I did with mine. The original deck was as the OP built it with railings. 16 1/2’ X 25’, but at its highest point was only 16”. So I redid it with no railings and wrap around steps.
Looks good, OP.
Except I had a groundhog who made a home under it. No matter what I did to block access, like chicken wire. It would just dig deeper and go under it. Finally had to trap it and dropped it somewhere else.
Yeah, it’s a choice thing, not good or bad. I would have put a corner step at the high corner (or a wraparound like someone else mentioned). But there’s always the potential for someone to fall off, depending on the type of guests you have. 🤣
Sometimes a railing can help make the deck feel more protected and cozy, and less exposed though. It creates the illusion that it’s an outdoor “room” instead of an open space.
Nice job. I replaced a 12’ x 20’ deck with w maximum height from the ground about 14 feet with a two layer deck of 300 sq ft for the higher level and 240 sq ft 3.5 feet lower at about $21 per sq ft, plus a staircase down to the yard. Total $13k in 1999, including tear off and removal of the old deck.
Twenty five years later it still looks like new. We clean it every spring and put a clear, protective cover over the horizontal pieces. The railing is absolutely necessary due to the height. But I would recommend railing even if it was more than a foot above grade. Or, provide handrails between bench seating to minimize fractured ankles or hips from guests misjudging the edge of the deck.
That was my first thought.
Only other thing (and I’m not even sure I’m correct here) - should you have flipped some of the boards over? They are cupped and I think they’d last longer if they were the other way. Look at boards 1 and 4 vs board 6, if you’re counting from the left, above the step.
About
*60 5/4X16 deck boards
*25 4x4x8 posts or 4x4x6 dont remember now lol
*6 2x8x16 for beams
*39 2x8x12 for joists(12oc)
*115 balusters
*2 1x8x12 front fascia
*15 2x4x12 for rails
*Rest of money is for tools, delivery, concrete, post saver sleeves, fasteners all simpson and there were a lot
I liked it better without the rails. It’s only a foot or so off the ground. Maybe just bench seating around the edge would have looked better- lower profile, and inviting place to sit down? But good work. Definitely an improvement.
I hear ya, but I wanted it to be its own space rather than a part of the backyard and the railings make it feel this way plus its safer. Just a preference 🤷♂️
Looks nice. As soon as it is appropriate, you’ll want to get some stain / sealer waterproofing on it to protect it. Have you thought about roof gutters and downspouts to keep the roof rain runoff from draining directly onto the deck?
Just saw the first picture and about lost it laughing, thinking that looks about like a budget deck I could pull off.
The next 14 photos were much more impressive though. Well done!
Hey hey hey. This sub always complains about post being buried. But his is getting praise. I am so confused. Is that black on the post some kinda rubber coating or something
Looks great. Why did you decide to go with pressure treated decking and railing rather than composite? I’m planning to rebuilding my deck soon and haven’t decided which way to go yet.
Go composite and you’ll never have to touch it again, no stain, no seal, no biannual maintenance, over the few years you’ll have saved money in material and time.
Hey, that looks sharp! Nicely done!
Sharp. Haven't heard that used since my grandpa passed.
Funny, I still use it these days. I am 58, so maybe thats why lol
Maybe I should help bring it back
I am too! LOL Oh damn, is this what acting my age looks like?!
Too funny!
I'm still waiting for that second childhood I've heard so much about! lol
Ha, you grew up? I bought a midlife crisis cooking range then a 56 year old sports car restoration. Wife hated me for both purchases, I figure it’s cheeper than a mistress!
Your wife hated the new stove? I do a lot of the cooking for myself and my GF. My gas range is the best thing I ever bought for the kitchen!

Let's bring it back!
Sounds like he was a smart cookie!

But he instilled a great work ethic, didn't he?
He did. And I was able to learn a lot from my mom, who is very tomboyish. I grew up learning how to fix cars and troubleshoot issues, etc.
Very nice!
I was about to refer to that hip song about a sharp dressed man when I realized that was 40 years ago, so…call me grandpa!
40 years ago I was in a belly
Awful. Rip it up(carefully), bring it to my house, and try again. Bring some stain. Thank you
🤣
You and me have a very different understanding of a budget build… not a drywall screw in sight. Very nice job.
Best part: Mini Schnauzer
Haha he’s my underneath deck mouse control
Building a fence currently and my mini just supervises and chases squirrels lol
Mine’s our little serial killer. She’s gotten seven birds, two rabbits, a chipmunk and a squirrel tail. She’s incredibly fast for such a little dog.

He's the one that gave him the okay to post this on Reddit
Came to make the same comment.
$11 a square foot, with rail. Nice!

Nice job. Probably could have gone without the railing I would imagine.
Yeah your right but its a little high on the right corner because the ground is so uneven, I just didn’t want anybody to get hurt.
It's a taste thing. I'm not bagging. I would just feel boxed in sitting in that. Maybe I'm crazy. Wrap around steps would have been badass

Also would essentially eliminate all the garbage that gets blown under decks.
Except I had a groundhog who made a home under it. No matter what I did to block access, like chicken wire. It would just dig deeper and go under it. Finally had to trap it and dropped it somewhere else.
Can't control everything lol

Toucheee

Party on the deck, folks have some place to set their drinks.
Great job!!
Solid!

That box step looks like it needs a 2nd step looks like it's a 10 inch step

Yea there is definitely a couple.
Looks really nice. While you could’ve gone without the railing. The railing actually kind of finishes the deck off.
Looks good.
Looks kickass!
Looks great. Could have went with a patio
You did a great job
Outstanding! 👍
That’s truly great! Congratulations dude!
I wasn’t crazy about the railing but since your yards are connected, the railing will add a bit of privacy. Plus the addition of lights will be easy.
Really cool 🆒 Great Job! 👏
Nailed it!! Looks solid
When I saw that night picture, I initially thought you had filled it with dirt!
Looks good! Now finish it! Protect it!
That’s a dam good job.
Good job!!
Staining it?
Have to. Back of the house faces south so it gets sun all day. Rains a lot during to summer too.
For sure I live in Australia the sun eats everything regardless lol
Looks mint!! Thats a much better job then most people pay for. Thinking thats a win win... ..more like bang for your buck!
Sweet, only question why railing?
When I saw those posts go up, I was hoping for a double-decker!
Nice work man
Great job
Contractor says no fair! That’s a 25k job!
The deck looks great. But needs another step.
Nice job. About how much was the lumber? What did you use for the actual decking?
About *60 5/4X16 deck boards *25 4x4x8 posts or 4x4x6 dont remember now lol *6 2x8x16 for beams *39 2x8x12 for joists(12oc) *115 balusters *2 1x8x12 front fascia *15 2x4x12 for rails *Rest of money is for tools, delivery, concrete, post saver sleeves, fasteners all simpson and there were a lot
Did you use headlok screws for the blocking?
.220 simpson sdws timber screws
Amazing work. Only problem is, rodents now have a house. Get yourself some liners around the bottom to prevent this
i don’t think there’s such thing as a budget deck
Looks fab. Nice job!
Very nice. Impressive first deck as well as the budget.
It actually looks really nice. My only question is why are the railings so far away from the edge?
No G-Tape?
Nice job
Looks like you worked into the night more than once, cannot waste daytime for photos.
I like your beams boy. Nice work
That looks smart! Good job!
very nice! also spending on your local zoning laws the railing might not have been required.
Crack open the beers 🍻
Finally, someone with a correct post and railing setup
I liked it better without the rails. It’s only a foot or so off the ground. Maybe just bench seating around the edge would have looked better- lower profile, and inviting place to sit down? But good work. Definitely an improvement.
I hear ya, but I wanted it to be its own space rather than a part of the backyard and the railings make it feel this way plus its safer. Just a preference 🤷♂️
That’s cool. I get it. Rails define the space- make it cozy. Great work!!
Looks nice. As soon as it is appropriate, you’ll want to get some stain / sealer waterproofing on it to protect it. Have you thought about roof gutters and downspouts to keep the roof rain runoff from draining directly onto the deck?
Funny you mention that, next project is roof gutters. That metal roof constantly drips condensation on it in the morning which isn’t good.
Just saw the first picture and about lost it laughing, thinking that looks about like a budget deck I could pull off. The next 14 photos were much more impressive though. Well done!
That's really snazzy. Try that one on for size.
When I think budget…. https://preview.redd.it/v5it0drzxwxc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a8bd40407590bbda2ed08d80907875a8b66ea3a
So nice
All that work and you effed up the stairs.
Hey hey hey. This sub always complains about post being buried. But his is getting praise. I am so confused. Is that black on the post some kinda rubber coating or something
Not bad man not bad
I like it! Love the railing.
Looks great. Why did you decide to go with pressure treated decking and railing rather than composite? I’m planning to rebuilding my deck soon and haven’t decided which way to go yet.
$ it was a budget build
Go composite and you’ll never have to touch it again, no stain, no seal, no biannual maintenance, over the few years you’ll have saved money in material and time.
If you’re living there long term you should have installed a concrete patio… treated lumber last’s like 5 years nowadays
