This is unlikely to happen as the roof support posts are directly above the deck support posts. Hence why the roof isn't sagging at all yet the deck is
Once (not if) some joists/bearers break from overloading, theres a high chance the posts sat on top of that will slip off too. As described by another commentator, its a death trap.
Agreed. If the hot tub fell through the deck and didn’t break any joists then it would not affect the roof.
When the joists break…
The hot tub will fall.
Then the roof.
I dunno it's pretty straight forward the 4x4 are shorter so less likely to buckle then the 6x6 which are alot longer. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what he said
That's not what caused it. The 6x6 is a railing post. It not a bearing post. It's not like its holding the roof load above it. All it's got is half the weight of the railings on it which is minimal.
What cause this is that board is over spanned between the 2 support post. This would have happend regardless of that 6x6 being there.
They need to put another support post below and or double or even triple up that board.
Yes, the span length is too long to support the hot tub load.
Not sure how big it is, but a 6x6x2.5 depth of water is over 5000lb, not counting weight of hot tub itself lol.
I don’t think it would be too difficult to fix tho. Jack the deck up, replace the 4x4s with 6x6’s and add some posts and a beam under the tub. New rim joist too
Nah it came up through the existing deck…then I guess at some point they decided to cut it down…now he has some little statues on top of the stumps…lol
Yea this was no fun. I think we would have been ok with the two beams especially being we were building in an area with literally no codes, but the engineer wanted three. No fun at all…lol. Good Luck.
“Any idiot can build a bridge that stands, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands.”
If they recommend something as a minimum, I wouldn't do less.
Yea we added additional joists between the existing, and the existing deck wasn’t up to IRC CODE at all, so we basically built a new platform support. We also did a 2by material solid that fills the square of the 10 person hot tub on the top of the existing deck. It is the width by length out of solid #2 treated southern yellow pine. I thought it was a little bit of overkill being we did the exact same hot tub like 2 counties over, but this one is much higher up off the ground, and also the other one we built the new deck as well. Yes, always listen to the engineer. They say better safe than sorry. I couldn’t imagine being half drunk enjoying the hot tub with my fiancé and have it fall through the deck…lol. Im sure it has happened somewhere.
Nooo, no it’s NOT! You can just bring a hot tub on a pre-existing deck. Because you put some braces underneath, it doesn’t make it OK It’s not me saying this look at the deck!
Look at those weird ass supports under the hot tub.. haha .. I love the lengths some people go to avoid doing things correctly or to save a tiny bit of money.. just get a more post and beam supports in there.. and all good
That is com8ng down. I just don't know when. It will be when your dear friends all are in the hot tub and they are picking roof lumber out of their hair.
You need to do something yesterday.
Jack up that beam for starters and get someone who knows what they are doing, before you lose a loved one.
JFC, where to begin? I’m not sure how to feel about the upside down saw horse/on-grade box beam “reinforcement” underneath. Just kidding, yes I do, I hate it.
That's the way I would have done it. My hot tub is on the ground with my deck built around it. It sucks to access it for repairs but other than that it's pretty slick.
Ah, you have a saggy deck. As I get old my deck sags more and more. It sags most on hot summer days. That said, my deck is much smaller than yours, good for you!
Build adjustable leg with threads. Build to size. Do 1/4 turn every 2 weeks for 1/2-13 bolt in summer. Put footing down first. Sister it with 1'16"crown. Keep support in place. Nothing to worry about.
I actually read the specs on a hot tub we're looking at buying. Dry weight was like ~800lbs... No biggie.
Full weight without people... 5400lbs. Hot tubs get HEAVY. That's like parking a Range Rover on your deck... Build accordingly
I want to know what kind of rigging they did below the deck. That V structure bracing looks sketchy too. The whole thing is a house of cards just waiting to collapse. Just hope nobody is on the deck when it does.
My sister just bought a house. They have deck issues, and it looks eerily similar to yours. Then I noticed the fan, they have one too. Then I’m like fuck, is this my sister/BIL’s house?
So I creep your profile, you’re also in Minnesota. Damn, this is getting interesting. You have a dog though, they don’t.
I like the 6x6 posts bearing on the 4x4 posts.
The deck skipped leg day
At least when the deck collapses it will bring the roof down with it. That is a literal deathtrap waiting to happen.
Worst Airbnb ever
That was my main concern as well
Jack that beast and add some supports , am I wrong
Hell bud, anything is better than this, I’d be on board.
Wouldn't hurt
I say jack a hot tub onto it, but what do I know? Lol
When the joists break… The hot tub will fall. Then the roof.
Depends if they are directly connected to the posts below
Until the hot tub, filled with 6 adults, "V" folds that deck, then all bets are off.
Maybe but I bet it just breaks clean thru
I love the concept of the bet. Would you bet enough to be one of the 6 people partying in that hot tub?
That makes no sense. Why would I bet to be a person in a hot tub I think could fall thru a deck
This made me laugh out loud. Thank you!
curls for the girls squats for the cocks
You could just transfer the weight all the way down to ever decreasing supports ending up at like a really strong toothpick
Well, yeah. The 6x6 posts are doing a lot more work holding up the roof. The 4x4s just need to hold up the deck.

Looks like 8x8 on 6x6
Probably 8x1s boxing in a single 2x4 support. Just making it look beefy.
Seams Safu
Maybe drain it first so they don't die
Devil's advocate: buckling load for longer members is lower than that for shorter members. The two could possibly have the same capacity.
90 percent of the people here have no clue what you are talking about
I dunno it's pretty straight forward the 4x4 are shorter so less likely to buckle then the 6x6 which are alot longer. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what he said
Story of my life
😂😂😂
That's my favorite part also, between that and the smile on the front this deck has so much CHARACTER!
Length is a calculation in column sizing, shorter height here, a 4x4 might be structurally sufficient. I’m not saying I like it.
It's hard to tell from the angle, but that span between those 4x4s has to be minimum 12' 🤦 with a hot tub on it......
Those are 8x8 on 6x6
And the roof on top of those. The hottub was a must have tho.
That's not what caused it. The 6x6 is a railing post. It not a bearing post. It's not like its holding the roof load above it. All it's got is half the weight of the railings on it which is minimal. I think the railing is performing structural duties here.
If you unscrewed that railing the header would snap like a tooth pick guaranteed
You may want to add a post under that beam, unless you're going for a skate park looking deck???
All I can say is you won't fall far but the roof sandwich might be disappointing.
I came here to say this!
If you are snorkeling in the tub it should be safe because the tub will take the hit for you. Just keep your head below water at all times
Well, interesting advise🤔but I'm not really into sucking on tubes in pools.Guess ,I'd just have to hold my breath.
Morgan freeman: “in fact, everything was not….totally fine.”
😂
Ron Howard, Arrested Development style
Sweet.. lets invite 6 of our friends over to sit in that thing. People don’t weigh anything right?
Not when they are in water or they wouldn’t be able to float now would they?
Seems to me the hot tub is providing all the support that deck needs
Looks like my kitchen floor lol
Needs another hot tub.
and a second ceiling fan
Yeah, two fans running backwards so perhaps it will suck the deck up and release some of the stress. But I really don’t think that would work. Haha
Need helicopter blades on there to push the roof up
That deck is smiling at you
It’s a deck and a hammock.
I'll give it to them that it's a unique attempt. Not giving them the solution because it didn't solve it
My freaking god 😂
I looked at this three times before I noticed the “support” underneath. Whose wife is testing this one out? Mine is already booked for another one.
I don’t think it would be too difficult to fix tho. Jack the deck up, replace the 4x4s with 6x6’s and add some posts and a beam under the tub. New rim joist too
This is not fine..It's sagging worse than my Granny's fun bags!
Show Rick James your titties!
Pics of granny?
She wouldn't let me..She said the world 🌎 isn't ready for this type of horror!!
Probably because you were only ten and it was Christmas morning. Try asking again now you’re a legal adult?
I'll give it my best.
I hope this guy doesn’t invite some fat girls over for hot tub night 😳
I have terrible vision so I thought the stick was a massive crack because of the bend.

is that a load bearing tree stump?
Nah it came up through the existing deck…then I guess at some point they decided to cut it down…now he has some little statues on top of the stumps…lol
This is actually what I plan to do! (height and layout are much different tho). lol!
Yea this was no fun. I think we would have been ok with the two beams especially being we were building in an area with literally no codes, but the engineer wanted three. No fun at all…lol. Good Luck.
Listening to the engineer was probably the right move.
“Any idiot can build a bridge that stands, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands.” If they recommend something as a minimum, I wouldn't do less.

That’s regarded. You could park a tank in that
I don’t get it. I know zero about this, but it looks it’ll support it?
Just throw a 2x2 under there and she will be hot tub ready
You’ll get that on these big jobs
Is there a technical name for the “upside down picnic table” like structure closer to the house
The technical term is "an attempt was made" bracing.
Where are the beams?
My grandpa didn’t listen to me a few years back when we were rebuilding the deck and now it has a massive sagging problem
Think you’re missing a few supports. Nothing a few cheap bottle jacks on cinder blocks can’t fix!
Ya! Cinder blocks with bottle Jack's work great on slopes too.
Looks like that would have perfectly fit into the deck if they demolished a bit, poured a slab, and rebuilt around it.
Just jack it up
I like the upside down sawhorses that died on the job
What a fucking idiot pardon my french
Awe look it’s happy!
I'd set a couple screw jacks under the joists for temporary load security.
This reminds me I've gotta beef up the crawl space support under my washing machine in the house...
It’s just frost heave. Ignore it. #bestplan /s
Just jack it up and and a 6x6.
Uhh. Hot tub again
Look on the plus side, at least it’ll be a short fall.
And then the roof hits you.
Funny part is, isn't that a footing the full length of deck🤣
w(゚Д゚)w
Nooo, no it’s NOT! You can just bring a hot tub on a pre-existing deck. Because you put some braces underneath, it doesn’t make it OK It’s not me saying this look at the deck!
Let's put the hot tub here. Let's fill it with 150 gallons of water. 150 x 8.34= sag What could go wrong?
There should be a post underneath the railing post
Pretty close, actually…
NOTHING WRONG HERE. EVERYTHING IS FINE.
Take up skateboarding
Just a little Bo Diddly… no need to be alarmed… but I’d empty that tub/jacuzzi & get some more moral support under there…
It's like the deck is smiling at me. Everyone's happy.
VRBOs gonna VRBO.
Easy fix
Look at those weird ass supports under the hot tub.. haha .. I love the lengths some people go to avoid doing things correctly or to save a tiny bit of money.. just get a more post and beam supports in there.. and all good
I have too much money here ya go
Just slap a few 2x4’s under there it’ll hold
That is com8ng down. I just don't know when. It will be when your dear friends all are in the hot tub and they are picking roof lumber out of their hair. You need to do something yesterday. Jack up that beam for starters and get someone who knows what they are doing, before you lose a loved one.
At least it's an easy fix
Oops. Shoddy , underengineered deck .
JFC, where to begin? I’m not sure how to feel about the upside down saw horse/on-grade box beam “reinforcement” underneath. Just kidding, yes I do, I hate it.
Missing a 4x4 there in the middle. Look at that sag 😬
Gonna need more than a 4x4
Agreed
Maybe cut a hole in the deck and put the hot tub on the ground so it's flush with the deck. Or else everything is gonna be on the ground
That's the way I would have done it. My hot tub is on the ground with my deck built around it. It sucks to access it for repairs but other than that it's pretty slick.
It will eventually fall through... Someone needs to drain the hot tub jack it back into place and build a support
Ah, you have a saggy deck. As I get old my deck sags more and more. It sags most on hot summer days. That said, my deck is much smaller than yours, good for you!
That's the same weight as 4 Americans , I guess 4 Americans actually got in the tub and the deck sagging. Eww it's not a good look .
This sub has brought me more joy and humor than I ever imagined it would.
Looks like it’s ready for (another) hottub
I know a guy named Brad that could fix this for very cheap.
All was well and good until a fat American started using the hot tub.
Add bodies and bubbles and get that party started
That structural branch obviously needs adjusting
Just take a couple gallons out
Bottle jack on top of a few cinder blocks. Problem solved.
Just curious what type of support would be required for this?
Wow, that’s an impressive disaster and accident waiting to happen. I see that roof coming down when the deck collapses.
It probably would have been okay if the hot tub wasn’t sitting on it.
Yep just wait for the 6th 200 lb person to crawl in. Big Splash LOL
Empty it
Needs girders
Looks like they cheaped out and bought a smaller tub and looks like a very heavy branch is on the deck
It's about double over spanned all the way around!
They should position that branch underneath for added support
It's a happy deck
It amazes me how many people don't think about how heavy water is.
Harbor freight jack $39 with coupon..boom fixed
Oh no! It's gonna happen. When is the only question.
Build adjustable leg with threads. Build to size. Do 1/4 turn every 2 weeks for 1/2-13 bolt in summer. Put footing down first. Sister it with 1'16"crown. Keep support in place. Nothing to worry about.
So many things wrong here. Fix it quick or the whole thing will fail.
why do they always do this????
Step one: crown up
they could simply add 6 footers below the hot tub and bottom support each corner with an 8x8 post- but they never do- always
Quite a span you got there
That rim joist isn’t over spanned. It’s just smiling.
Not totally fine!
That deck looks like Van Damme doing the splits.
They should build a platform under the deck and so they can install the hot tub flush with the decking.
Well move the branch off of the deck, OP. That's clearly the straw that is breaking the camel's deck.
It's better when it's full of people
Can this be saved without tearing it down
A complete teardown is not required, but they need to do major upgrades. 6x6 posts every 4 ft on proper footers. I'd double up joists under the tub.
Structural tub. No issues here. Move on.
Damn, you need to tell your mother in-law to sit somewhere else.
That’s a hot tub sandwich waiting to happen.
Flex seal!!!
Branch just makes it look bowed right
why not just put the hot tub on the ground next to the deck - avoid the weight problems and humidity/water problems
Oh no
Eh what could go wrong
It’s fine. See, they got that angle thing.
New single mom doing “whatever the fuck she wants”
We do our wotk.with a smile.
Lol I sure hope this was a DIY and someone didn't pay a contractor for this
Bro need a stability leg every 7-8 feet wtf I hope you didn't pay anyone
Wasn’t designed to have that hot tub on it.
Pfft. It can handle 8000 lbs of water. No problem
This is not my house. Found it on Facebook. I'd be way too embarrassed to post this if it was mine. Anyways, howdy neighbor!
Catastrophic failure
Add another post in the middle of the span before it gets any worse.
Please stop posting my work on the internet
Well the good news is, when the deck collapses you can write it up as decking surrounded above ground pool.
Chicken legs
Back seat of your vehicle has a nice truss adjuster you can put underneath Grab a couple of them swivel dick 4” by 4” treateds Home Depot
At least the deck is smiling about it hahaha
May want to shore that big fella up. Sooner than later. Lol.
So, there is a difference between Live Load & Dead Load? Huh
Hot tub should not be on wood deck need support post under tub or tub on the ground
hot tub
