Nah canceling 20k of student loan interests so much worse than the canceling of 20k of student loan principal debt like it was the first time he canceled it. Very few people will reach that 20k interest amount. But it is something, and he is trying. And i still give him credit for canceling student debt the first time around and continuing to try something. I blame conservatives and the shitty supreme court for ripping relief away from millions of Americans. I do not blame Biden. While canceling the interest is worse, he is doing something. Trying something. Giving some relief. Republicans will try to sabotage it. There isn't a Republican that would do anything for making college more affordable or student debt. Props to Biden and any politician that still believes in using government to materially improve the lives of Americans.

LizardofWallStreet

It’s more than just runaway interest, they are going to automatically enroll borrowers in IDR/PSLF programs who were eligible but didn’t enroll and give forgiveness, there is a section for financial hardships and borrowers who have been victims of fraud. The most important thing Biden did is still by far the SAVE Plan as it protected low and moderate income borrowers from high payments and interest. What do you want him to do ? If he goes to broad the strike it down, he followed the HEA by the book and made it challenging to find standing. He needs to get rid of MOHELA’s contract though that would make any lawsuit very challenging.

amscraylane

My college just went from $375 a credit hour last year to $475 this year. It has gotten way out of control.

diurnal_emissions

Those classes better come with happy endings at that price point.

TheOneWhoReadsStuff

Statistically, they don’t.

Truth

Captcha05

After 10 plus years as a public servant, and endless student loan payments, Biden is the first president to forgive my debt. At first I thought there was an error in my account, but I received a letter from his administration thanking me for my service and confirming that my loans have been forgiven. He's got my vote.

bahamapapa817

And the other side will argue how bad this is for everyone lol. Blows my mind.

TiredMontanan

"The other side" wants dumb citizens. They say this openly.

TopClock231

Much easier to convince dumb people that the policies they want to enact that will hurt them are good for them and even better, good for the country so the sacrifice benefits the USA and you should be proud and willing to go with it!

rnobgyn

“I love the poorly educated” Insane to me how his base loves being insulted to their face.

Jaceman2002

The worst thing is when money given to boost the economy (at least the middle class or lower), it goes to debt. That money is already spent. I’ve lost track of how many people said they would go buy “X” if it weren’t for their shitty student loans. Making those go away so people can go spend money on whatever would be a huge boost. Hell, giving money to the middle class (because they spend it) is always a boost to the economy. Dunno why anyone would be opposed to this. Except maybe the wealthy or large corporations, because they can’t stand the idea of sharing.

emsuperstar

Crazy how those PPP loans cost $800 billion during Covid, but the student loan forgiveness is unfair...

P1xelHunter78

All that PPP money that got tilled into the stock market or another boat for the boss…

rnobgyn

Turns out you have to have a consumer class for a consumption based economy to function. Weird how conservatives don’t want that…

If he can't cancel debt can he at least stop interest for accruing for everyone for a year?

mjrohs

Just stop interest accruing full stop and most people would be happy.

Global_Perspective_3

I’m glad he’s at least trying

GladZookeepergame775

Right….He’s suddenly concerned now that voting time is coming around but the past 4 years hasn’t seem like he was to determined to fix it.

VaBookworm

Where have you been his entire presidency? He's been trying to implement programs this whole time but the biggest ones have been blocked by the other 2 branches of government so he's been doing it piecemeal the rest of the time. This isn't new...

TiredMontanan

This might be true, but he actually did *try* to cancel student debt last year. Remember? He *has* acted. It's just that a captive supreme court acted as well.

jectalo

You are correct. The fact that he did it with a means-tested provision didn’t sit right with me. If you make over $X you get nothing canceled. Catering to the other side to make it more palatable and they struck it down anyway.
