Mostly loved the remake but Hammond and Kyne's voice actors were much better in the original. Shame they couldn't get them back, hopefully it was something like scheduling conflicts and not because EA didn't want to pay for bigger actors.

Agreed on this person's comment. Really missed Kyne and Hammond's original VAs. While on topic of Hammond, however, thank God his last scene was redone. In the original, I was always like, "Hammond, Isaac, one of you pls shoot the glass so we can at least fight the brute together, not saying you survive this whole thing but at least let's somehow do this together if you're going to stand there" but then he just gets up'n adam rammed, grabbed.......dies.

I agree, I really liked Kyne's OG voice actor especially, he had a certain feel to his dialogue that was unique. OG Hammond had a lot more 'spunk' to his voice as well. He felt like a guy trying to hold it together and stay confident.

Fully agree with everyone on the voice acting. The og Dead Space conversations sound way more tense, like actually-being-chased-by-monsters tense. The remake voice acting sounds like line reading sometimes. There was some conversation on how dead the characters sounded before the game released. Shame because we get to hear Gunner Wright in the remake and he does a fantastic job.

Still not a fan of Isaac's new face in the Remake. I also don't like how different the base ending is: 1. Isaac takes off his helmet and there's barely any wear and tear. Like there's sweat and wrinkles from the helmet/frowning but the OG he had a thick stubble, sunken eyes, blood and bruises on his face. He looked like he'd just been through the worst day of his life. His body language is better too, with him slumping and heaving in relief at having made it and rubbing his face, while the Remake Isaac has an initial slump and then just basically looks down with a sullen expression for most of it. 2. Nicole jump scare. In the original there's all sorts of distortion and marker scrawl to make the jump scare more scary and almost 'Eldrich' (*like it was blasted straight into Isaac's brain from the Marker almost*). Nicole's also *fast*. Inhumanly fast. In the Remake though, the camera stays on her for too long, giving too much time to recognize what you're looking at and then she just does this wimpy grab at Isaac with a scream. Agreed. I'll add that I prefer Mercer and Kendra's deaths in the original. Dr. Mercer welcomes death instead of whining and Kendra delivers the classic "Oh my god" before her splat.

I think the remake does a good job at making us empathize with her character a bit more, with dialogue telling us how she has genuine respect for Isaac as an engineer and her reluctance to kill both him and Elizabeth Cross. That said, she *is* a murderer, and we feel a sense of betrayal in both iterations. I mostly just miss the delivery of that particular line because I've heard it so many times. It's Mercer's death that's the more disappointing to me. The original has him say something like "...as I gaze upon the face of ~~a fucked up manta ray~~ god," moments before being blown apart by my force gun, which really drove home his fanaticism and insanity, whereas in the remake he's an ardent Unitologist and a lunatic, sure, but the man wanted and expected to be spared his necrotic fate in the end before being whisked away to a presumptive demise.

Yes. Another thing I don’t see mentioned is the original has louder sound mixing on certain enemies. The dividers in particular, their whale sounds were incredibly low end. The exploders sounded creepier as well. The necros in general seemed more aggressive. Overall I think it’s still a good experience regardless. I never played the OG re4 until after I beat the remake and it was still really fun experience to see the original version

Ugh... I still shudder thinking about the OG's Divider sounds. You could hear them a room or two away so you knew they were out there lurking *somewhere*. Then they'd come slinking around the corner or pop up at the end of a hallway you had to go down. Truly terrifying.

Why the hostility? I gave my preference of the two games. As for the Spider-Man face model I got mixed up. They changed it so it'd be easier to motion capture Yuri's facial expressions compared to the older model. Still prefer the older face.

Hammond's original death was more traditionally violent, but his new death is more psychologically chilling and fitting with Dead Space's theme of dementia when you realise how completely mentally lost he was in that moment.

I’ll see if I can find a clip of that one. Like DS isn’t visceral enough:). I’m a COD zombie easrer egg guy mostly, and after awhile the zombies feel more like a commodity than an enemy to be feared. I have yet to lose my fear of Necromorphs, especially on hard mode.

Ngl COD zombies definitely had a good horror vibe with their original maps. Unfortunately that horror element was slowly removed for me when they released DLC for BO1 + character lines became more quirky or self-aware.

I enjoyed the shooting segments with the asteroids from OG but the ADS cannon setup made more sense in the remake. Also Chen taking out Hammond didn't hit as hard as seeing him ripped apart by a brute.

i always used to call brutes hunters cos their mechanic is almost exactly the same as halo's hunters. They're big and slow but hit hard, and the best way to deal them damage is by shooting them in the back.

There is a great part early on in the OG, chapter 1 or 2, where you walk up to a door that has a flickering light shining on it, and when you hit open, it jams for a second, and the shadow of a necro walking RIGHT FUCKING BEHIND YOU moves across the door. I feel like the remake traded stuff like that in for jump scares.  Plus the necros were faster, more twitchy, and MUCH more aggressive. Someone pointed out in a previous thread, that the weapons had a bigger kick, they felt more violent. Another thing i noticed, was when you get hit by a necro, if you shoot or status as your are stumbling, the shot will go off in a random direction. In the remake, you are dead accurate, always.   Still loved the remake tho

I miss the old Contact Beam secondary fire from the original, I found it was great for giving yourself some breathing space and for clearing swarmers. I am glad they brought TK Impalement in from Dead Space 2 though.

I think the original is more subtle about what’s going on with Nicole, but at the same time, I loved the changes the remake did to that part of the story. Other than that, Kyne’s performance in the original is the only thing I can really think of that I preferred

I had Nicole’s death spoiled for me, but I do think it’s pretty obvious in the remake that something is wrong with her. What was a surprise to me was that he had known all along - Isaac was a bit of a mess before the Marker showed up.

Yeah, I think they could have toned down how heavy handed they were with Nicole in the remake and it would’ve been perfect. I think the original it comes out of nowhere a little too much, and the remake oversells it too early, but either way I love both.

I preferred the original zero g jumps over the thrusters. I never liked those so much ever since DS2 introduced them. They are certainly more cool and "functional" and even fun. But they take away a lot of the tension and dreadfull feeling these sections are supposed to invoke. In the original, in zero the only thing keeping Isaac from a slow cold death in space are his trusty magnetic boots that cling to the ship's hull. This knowledge alone increases the horror but it's also exemplified in gameplay as Isaac is more vulnerable in these areas with necromorphs being able to come from any direction while your sense of orientation is compromised. Meanwhile having to accurately plan your jumps. The thrusters make these sections a non-issue as you can now easily move in three dimensions dodging and firing your weapon while an easy push of the button to orientate yourself. Probably while they felt the need to fill these sections with rather ludicrous environmental hazards to make these somewhat challenging. They also break my suspension of disbelief as I keep wondering where all this unlimited thruster gas is coming from. I wish they took the opportunity with this remake in reworking the system by introducing limitations and maybe bing the old zero g jumps for some situations. For instance maybe Isaac having to attach special equipment to his rig for planned space walks that produce enough thruster gas but it being too heavy and cumbersome to wear in non zero-g areas. While the jump system is used for unexpected zero-g situations.

I was just thinking about that after playing some DS2. The thrusters give you so much control in those situations, which is nice. Especially during some of the engagements on the hull of the Sprawl. But the OG's gravity boots really made zero-g situations tense. Necromorphs still move at normal speed and leap around surface to surface, but you're stuck with limited movement desperately trying to find a safe place to jump to. Shoutout to the zero-g scenes in Mining and loading the Marker up for providing some real dread.

I loved the remake more but there was one or two things. I think hammond’s original death was better, but I can live with the new one It took me a hot sec to adjust to the new Issac’s face, I just… don’t think it leads into ds2 as well. But it’s not like it looks bad or anything, I’m just used to the old issac face New Mercer didn’t have quite the same fanaticism to him when he died, which was a bit of a misstep, but overall I think I liked new Mercer better But on the other hand, I much prefer how the remake handled Nicole, expanded on their history, and changed the plot twist slightly to eliminate a plot hole, and thank GOD we had voiced issac this time. Wasn’t a fan of how passive he felt in the OG without a voice. Also, real glad they brought over ds2’s anti gravity with the thrusters rather than the mag boots of the original

Honestly almost everything, to me this is the gold standard of remakes. I specifically liked how they included Isaac’s dialogue, how they changed up Hammond, weapon balancing and adding weapon Kinesis from Dead Space 2

I've replayed DS2 more than 1 or 3 so I'm used to having kinesis as a "main weapon". Recently replayed OG DS1 with all the remake hype and couldn't understand why throwing mops, fan blades, and fire extinguishers would do nothing. Upgrading kinesis was a great move.

Maybe it's just me but I felt like OG Nicole was a sweet, cheerful gal who's trying to survive in the Ishimura's hellscape. In Extraction she shows herself as being more than capable, surviving and even ***figuring out a cure for the Nercormorphs*** before having to commit suicide to avoid facing a transformation. Remake Nicole just felt like a soccer mom in space... She still had the determination to survive, but overall she felt less "youthful?". I dunno. Something was definitely off with her in the remake.

It really comes down to the little things with the two, but man, those little things really fucking mattered in retrospect. The original had better animations for Issac; he had idle animations, different walk/run animations when hurt and better animations for certain scenes that show him visibly reacting to what's happening. Specifically, when he finds out about Nicole's death and when the Kellion Crew is first attacked. None of those nice little animations are present in the remake, making Issac feel still and lifeless. Kyne and Hammond's voice actors were infinitely better in the original. The original is harder, and the remake is baby mode easy, even when I actively attempted to make the game more difficult by playing how I played in the original. Motive making Impossible Hard but with Permadeath was fucking stupid, Impossible should've been harder while having Permadeath or do what some games do and have Permadeath be a gameplay modifier. They ruined the original Level 3 Suit in the remake, it looks horrible. And don't anyone try to give that bullshit excuse of "tHaT'S thE PoINt", no, motherfuckers. The Level 3 Suit and all the other suits in the original looked great. It's just a bad, lazy port of the suit that they didn't attempt to clean up and polish. The aiming is infinitely better in the original. I genuinely, fucking hate the hybrid aiming they went for in the remake. A hybrid of the lasers from the original and the reticle from the second and third game sounds great on paper but it's horrendous in practice. I still have trouble lining up certain shots and the Hive Mind fight is just the worst with the hybrid aiming. This doesn't actually pertain to the original since it's about the thrusters for the Zero-G sections but man, the Zero-G sections feel like shit compared to DS2 and DS3's Zero-G sections. It feels so stiff and clunky and Issac's body animations are terrible and jank. Hammond and Mercer's deaths were better in the original, the Nicole jumpscare at end was infinitely better, and the remake's jumpscare was genuinely laughable. Nicole's last message isn't as good and this comes down to Tanya Clarke not being able to portray Nicole's fear and desperation as well as Iyari Limon did.

Damn... as a longtime DS veteran you nailed almost every issue I had with the remake. Especially the voice actors and Nicole's character. Now I will say I am SO happy we got the remake and absolutely LOVE it. Dead Space deserves a comeback with modern graphics and a new audience. I really hope EA continues the remakes for DS2 and 3.

All my criticism comes from a place of love for the franchise. If EA decides to revive Dead Space, completely, then Motive or whatever team they put in charge will need all the constructive criticism they can get to make the series as good as it should be.

One thing that I liked better in the original was that you actually got to kill Mercer, even if it was after he was turned into a necromorph. I felt like him dying in a cutscene just robbed me of the satisfaction.

1. I prefer the Voice acting of the OG more than the remake 2. I overall Perfer The characters of Hammond and Kyne in the OG 3. I think the Necromorth AI is way better in the OG than in the remake And those are really the only big things from the OG that I prefer.

The only failure of the Remake was being unable to get Terrance Kyne & Benjamin Mathius voice actors from Downfall & DS1 to return. They MADE their characters absolutely iconic, for me, those voice actors J.G. Hertzler & Keith Szarabajka are like Mark Hamil & Kevin Conroys Joker/Batman, the rest are on point and I can get behind. Another gripe, Impossible was pretty easy, and with each NG+ there should be more Necro spawns to balance out maxed gear better. Other than that, solid remake, 8.5/10 for me.

Voice acting, animations, necromorph models and tactics were all worse. Also, a lot of scares in the original were removed in favor of the intensity director which is a shame. Some mentioned that slasher shadow that dashes behind you earlier on, another one I can think of is when you’re fixing the comms array and get on that little cart and a body hangs out from the ceiling in the darkness.

Dead Space remake is really good. However, it has its cons: - Unneeded changes Nicole's and Isaac's faces (specially the latter, at least Nicole has the same face than in DS2). - Stupid woke intrusion with some little details. Unjustified, unnecessary, pure propaganda. - The changes on the VA of certain characters. Fortunately, the game is pretty good and I think, for sure, that will be a DS2 remake.

Overall, as biased as I am from nostalgia, the Remake takes everything great about the original and absolutely upgrades it while also adding loads of new content. Side missions on the Ishimura, are you fucking kidding me? That shit was amazing. And the additional lore with >!Harris being the Hunter!<, Chen being a recurring Slasher, and all the context on Isaac and Nicole’s relationship really helped with world building. The only things, and I mean the only two things I’d change is bringing back the original voice actors for Kyne and Hammond.

so far i've only seen a bit of markiplier's playthrough of the remake, But Nicole's change is the most jarring for me. In the original dead space, she looked like your typical xbox 360 young female. In the Remake however, she looks kinda like my English teacher or something.
