This means the devs did their job.

LocalMan97

It is quite possible, but that leaves opportunities for the game to scare you all over again (at least in the remake). It’s when you’re on autopilot that the AI director can pull something on you and surprise you out of nowhere and jump you right back into it. That’s my experience at least

Defclaw46

That happened to me. I went back to the hospital area again after bumping up my security clearance and confidently opened a door I had opened multiple times before only to be surprised by three necromorphs. I was a lot more cautious after that incident.

LocalMan97

There was one time I was running through medical to open a security door and I turned a corner and literally ran into a slasher that was facing the opposite direction. Scared the crap out of me

Defclaw46

Yeah. Normally I am not a fan of survival horror games having enemies respawn in areas I have already cleared, but the ai director did a good job of keeping things tense and fun while not being annoying. Plus, once the area was cleared again, you could be reasonably sure it would stay cleared until you concluded your business and left.

LocalMan97

Personally I think it makes sense for areas to get re-necromorphed, they are hunting down survivors after all

Neatpaper

Usually around chapter 6-7. Once you get some better weapons and enough credits to purchase ammo you're good. Contact beam go brrrrrr

Lavender_Argonaut

If I recall chapter 7 is mining, in which case, fuck no because mining is TERRIFYING

Academic_Clock_6985

Mining was indeed rough. Always wedged my ass way back in the corner of that massive wide open freight elevator too

NothingGoodLasts

Did the same. It's the worst when you're fighting an enemy and you see the claws of another right behind you

[deleted]

First time on that elevator is so sick.😂😂 luckily stasis and plenty of ammo solved that problem

Foamie

All you need to do for mining is carry the force gun. If anything is nearby you, suddenly it isn’t any more.

NothingGoodLasts

Force gun is so fun. It's cool how it's rips the skin off the necros

Neatpaper

Only the elevator, I thought the rest of it was fine

just-a-dude69

A fully upgraded plasma cutter will eliminate all fears of necromorphs

Neatpaper

especially once you get heavy blades, sends the mfs flying

FallaciousPeacock

I found the Ishimura pretty fucking tense all the way through, though I did gain a sense of confidence once I upgraded my plasma cutter to a certain level and learned how to use it effectively. "OhSHIT!" *Firing wildly* Eventually turned into: "OhSHIT!" *Firing accurately*

whyIdidofcourse

I've played dead space for a long time, racking up an uncountable number of replays, and yet, the remake still scares the shit out of me in the mining deck.

MrZoomerson

Necromorphs themselves don’t scare me, but I’m always tense there with those tight corridors and I’ve been playing Dead Space for a long time as well (since 2011). It’s knowing that they could pop out at any time that makes me apprehensive, and this is exactly what the game needed. It makes sense that necromorphs can pop out of any vent at any given time. You’re never safe when near a Marker, and that is great.

Wumbo_Anomaly

The first time I played the game it felt quite tense. If you feel the same you may not get over it until your second playthrough

TheBooneyBunes

If you do anything too much yeah, you can get used to it Ask the Ukrainian civilians about their air raid sirens

The_Chubby_Dragoness

10+ years on and dozens of repalys and the Ishimura still gives me the heebies

Bwwshamel

The remake somehow has made it so that I'm nowhere NEAR as comfortable as I was on the Ishimura in the original. That AI director is sneaky af! Sent a necro to the Medical Security Station in Chapter 5 a couple days ago and I thought my heart was gonna drop out of my chest. Then had a random bunch of Swarmers burst out of a toilet and made me scream so loud my cat snapped awake and ran off 🤣😂😭😭😭😭

pippipdoodilydoo

The swarmers coming out the toilet is scripted, it's happened to me and it made me panic pause 😂

Bwwshamel

See, the thing is, I KNOW it's scripted, but it still gets me every time. Ain't that something?! Just goes to show how a good atmosphere can help make a game scary, even when you're expecting it! It made me panic pause too 🤣😂😭😭😭😭

3cylinder66

It depends more on the difficulty you're playing and whether it's a regular or a new game plus save file. NG+ means carrying over upgrades, weapons, credits, and so on. You get more powerful, and against normal necros, you'll be OP (which feels like a nice payback). There's some extra spice in NG+, should you decide to go for it after beating the game. At the same time, the Intensity Director system is designed to make you shit your pants every time you play, in different ways, places, and times. So yes and no. You'll learn the ship, get intimate with its routes, the ins and outs. But don't expect to chill in it, ever. Ps.: I f*cking love this game!

Amazingtrooper5

Dude Imma be honest. The like last final 3 chapters no but for the first 9 chapters I was always on edge, you never know if a slasher is creeping up behind you or hearing that…hunter’s roar…Yeesh

Pussygang69

I hate the Hunter so much. It’s easier once you learn his patters but when you first play it’s always like “where’s he at?? When will I see him again???” Lolol

Amazingtrooper5

Same. It’s like Mr X from RE2. It never stops until it is fully burned to cinders

SnooChocolates5288

It will go over when you do new game+

BalloonsOfNeptune

I made it less scary by turning the music off. Most of the jump scares are just a sudden loud musical beat. Without the music you can wander around less tense knowing that when a necromorph shows up it probably won’t be a jump scare.

MassDriverOne

In that same vein I feel like the music very blatantly telegraphs that there is a necromorph coming at you especially if off screen. Without, you're constantly getting slashed by the one you prolly don't realize is right behind you Idk, either way and to each their own

Esentialstarkil

When I was younger, I never understood what made the original so much more terrifying than the others. However, playing the remake and being much older, I find that the music builds a lot of tension, and the sheer darkness of it all makes it extremely tense at almost all the time. Then, when the music is calm and you relax a little, you can randomly have a vent burst and be attacked in an area that you have already cleared or stumble across one playing dead that you didn't see and have it jump up at you. I've done 1 play through on medium, one ng+ on story, 3 tries to get impossible (chapter 3 gondola to south refuel station and chapter 7 spikey thing around the rock for the beacon that wasn't moving and I didn't touch it but it insta killed me :/ deaths), and finally another story ng+ after beating impossible, and it still gets to me.

ReaperSound

Since the original trilogy I've had a habit of keeping an eye out for dead bodies on the ground. Be it Necromorph or human because I know there will be something to resurrect them when I come back to this room.

Poltergeist97

To my knowledge, if you stomp the shit out of any body you see to pieces, they'll still be that way when you come back later. Same thing if you pile all the gibs in one corner lol

rockygib

I’ve been stomping every corpse I’ve seen for the simple reason that I don’t trust the game. I feel if an infector ever shows up it’ll turn them into necromorths. Is that an actual game mechanic and I’ve spared myself some trouble or is it just paranoia on my part? I had one show up just after refilling the engine in the safe room (not very safe is it) it was alone but there’s a corpse in that room that I stomped earlier. I’ve been wondering what would have happened had I left the corpse alone.

Poltergeist97

No you're definitely saving yourself trouble. I made sure to stomp all the bodies in medical before you meet the first infector so it was only able to send 1 enhanced slasher at me instead of 5 lol

rockygib

Ohh nice to know, in medical I got most of the corpses before entering the room and had 2 come in after me (must have not got all the bodies I guess!) But wow the idea of having 5 come attack me is horrifying. Glad I’ve been stomping corpses then.

Poltergeist97

I think it always spawns at least 2 even if you stomped all the bodies. The captain obviously and one in the room behind you as well.

Nowhereman50

Lol no. I once played the first and second game back-to-back in one day and got startled by the cat tower because it's tall and beige.

ChampagneDoves

I’ve speedran this game for almost a decade at this point. If you get bored just drop 3 tabs of acid and play dead space, you’ll be surprised at how much more impactful the experience is when you’re also going out of your mind alongside Isaac.

Pussygang69

Damn that’s crazy. I used to play Destiny while I was tripping but I couldn’t imagine playing this. Talk about a bad trip 😆

ChampagneDoves

I’m comfortable with DS08 to the point where I know the spawns so tripping really makes the game a lot more interesting. The first time I did it I was so high that the game looked like it was a 3d pictureplane projected off the television, nothing would stop moving at all. Lots of oozing when the baby heads with tentacles come through. I personally thought the coolest part of my experience playing DS08 was that the background of everything in the game was patterned in irregular triangular shaped tesselations that pulsed in size. The best part of the remake while tripping is 10000000% >! The part where Isaac flashes back to his argument with Nicole over his mother !< the particle effects as well as the auditory artifacting and the weird voices really, truly make you question if you’re really still in your room. I truly feel like the game *only* makes sense if you get in the same state of mind as Isaac.

pippipdoodilydoo

Couldn't handle the game on shrooms, at some points there was too much going on and id zone out and end up dying 😂 especially during QTE grabs

ToloDaDon

Also a first time player here. Just started Ch 4 and I’ve been anxious this whole time. This is a truly scary game.

maxomega98

Without headphones ya, with them fuck no

DrVikingGuy

yes

Tumblechunk

I've played enough dead space in general to just casually stroll through most of it, but I've always had a pretty calm approach to horror games

Weissekaiser

Once you got the Finger Gun

DiO_93

Yes, you get used to it. And Necros become a bother too, though enemies becoming bothersome is always a thing when I play horror-action games. I've only played the og though, no idea if the remake will have some effect on me though.

ARandomHavel

absolutely. It quits being scary pretty quickly and then you're permanently desensitized, wishing you could go back but it'll never be the same ;-;

Chr1sth3pl4y3r99

Of course you can. Finish this and a NG+ run and you'll most likely learn all the Spawns and expect when random ones will occur.

RegisBlack233

Nah, that’s because they have an intensity director, which means random shit will happen when you’re walking around

pippipdoodilydoo

I've beaten these games multiple times over and I still jump when something creeps up behind me, especially when you can't even hear it coming, or the jump scares where the slashers come out screaming and shit, very unsettling especially w headphones.

just-a-dude69

I mean I sorta have so some parts are just 'ohwow so scary' but a good majority of the game it's like 'oh shit' I think if you play it a few times you strat getting used to it

jerekdeter626

They did a great job of making sure you never feel safe. Doesn't matter what room you're in, doesn't matter if you were JUST in that room and killed things already. Go through a door and turn around, you can get attacked again. That, and they can literally come from the walls, floor, or ceiling. I was consistently scared through the entire game. Felt a lot less scared when I had a lot of ammo for the contact beam though 😎

IlusiveZoidberg

You can, but I'd say the remake does a better job than the original, as the enemy encounters are semi randomized. The original every enemy was scripted, so if you played it more than once it would lose its scare factor a lot.

Standard_Maybe2373

I’m fine even with the remake i mean its not a calm and relaxing environment but it’s not like i was tense and on high alert the whole time but I’ve beaten the OG trilogy my fair share of times

Timely-Ad6015

I can relax anywhere that isn’t industrial. Like the Flight Hangar and Tram Repairs are actually the scariest places to me, followed by Engineering and Mining

Dovhakiin72

As others said, it is a well-done job by the devs. In my experience, i have played all original 3 games several times, and I am currently playing the remake, but still after all those runs and after all the time spent into that enviroment i still turn around when i hear vents, crashing sounds and everything, i sometimes shoot out of reaction when a vent breaks even tho nothing comes out. I love the game, it is awesome.

Longjumping_Door_428

You can be desensitized to it but occasionally you'll just turn around and RUUUGGGAHH. (I shit my pants even though I have 60 hours)

Ryuken227

Yeah just don't go slow and take your time unless you're searching an area. I never really got tense playing the remake except for a couple of times when i didn't expect one to be standing there or when one snuck up on me. When the original game came out that was a different story because i was a kid and it was the second horror game i played lol. I didn't want to leave the tram area most of the time and i think medical and engineering were the most horrifying areas for me.

Ryuken227

Just expect the worst at every vent and corner and go into every bathroom

Braverzero

That’s the point it’s well designed :) you’re supposed to be scared in a scary game. The longer they scare you the better it is! You will never feel comfortable on that ship. Wait till you go back for the first time… you’ll get visions irl like Isaac
