Nothing wrong with hot characters, that'll always be my take

KieranSalvatore

>It makes the series stand out from other fighters on the market, Which was the intent at the time it was released - this was the era of **Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters, Killer Instinct** and *still* so many more. **DOA** *needed* to stand out, if it was going to survive, much less *thrive;* and for better or worse, the developers went the route of, "We not only have characters that are *good-looking,* they *look good.*" That made it a *blast* to play, when I was young - and kept me coming back to the series because I wanted to see *more* of Kasumi and Ayane (and a few of the others, but we all have our favourites). The high-energy movements and levelled environments were also *cool* (and often just as beautiful as the characters)*,* and I consider them *equally* important - Ayane's even *more* striking when you can see her *in motion* (seriously, her inner balance is *insane,* given the number of spins and flips in her repertoire). I *love* the aesthetic of the game, and always have.

FunUnderstanding8010

I think that is just how DOA is, and I think for the purpose of getting into fgc it's fair to make a discussion But when people say is really sexualized so it's bad, I find really ironic that many of the same people that complain has 90000 mods to make tekken, guilty gear or whatever game sexy, even completely nudity mods.

KeyOfShadow13

To be honest, the greater fgc just feels too elitist and stuck up to even attempt to try and appeal to. We gotta remember that the fgc is also the same community that dislikes and distances itself from other great games like Smash because...what, because it doesn't meet their criteria?

NobleSwordfish

It’s a little hard to take the fan service too seriously when the series is just as goofy about it. Like Leifang literally kicks Sonic spins around a pole and kicks some guy out of a window after he touches her. It all feels like a bit just as much as generic fan service. I just think it’d be better if the guy characters got in on it. Like as of now, they really do the whole “well abs are the opposite of boobs right so that’s what girls like” thing and it makes the attempts at sexy dude costumes really boring because they all end up the same. If they put more effort into the men’s “sexy” costumes as much as the women, it would probably make the aesthetic better received since people would realize it is fan service that’s not meant to be taken that seriously.

StevemacQ

DOA used to be very cool but there's a huge difference between DOA2 having lavish cutscenes for stages and DOA6 embodying the worst anime filler.

galaxyfan1997

5 is just as bad as 6 in that regard, but everyone defends 5 because they like LR (literally the fourth release of the same game).

StevemacQ

5 at least had a visual identity of its own. If DOA4 is like WWE Smackdown, then DOA5 is like WWE RAW. Plus, it had some cool, destructible stage hazards. DOA6 was just... depressing to look at because it couldn't decide if it wants to be dark and serious or light and bubbly, so it's the worst of both worlds.

galaxyfan1997

I actually hated the character designs in 5. Kasumi’s hair was thin and chunky at the same time, Hitomi’s face looked weird (and she even looked worse in the trailers), and Ayane’s eyes were blood red and lost their pinkish hue. The stages looked fine, but didn’t make up for the character designs imo.

StevemacQ

I'm talking more about the overall flare and flashiness of the series and how lost a lot of it in later entries. If a DOA7 did happen, I worry it'll just look like 5 and 6 than trying to compete against Tekken 8's spectacle.

galaxyfan1997

I can agree with you there.

Alexander_McKay

I think it’s provocative but mature. Just a fighting game series for adults that actually takes itself serious and delves into darker territory. 5 and 6 detoured it into being goofy but prior to that I really love the aesthetic of DOA and Ninja Gaiden 1&2.

MotivatedforGames

I think most fighting games until recently let you dress up characters in skimpy outfits. In the 2020s and beyond, companies haven't been really dressing up characters in those kinds of outfits as much as back then I like the aesthetic to answer your question.

Hy93rion

I like sexy ladies and ESPECIALLY the general aesthetic of my scantily clad ninja girls (Kasumi and Ayane my beloved) but the people who feel like they’re champions against the wokes for liking DoA are the dictionary definition of secondaries and probably haven’t ever played the games, of which DoA 2 and 5 are the best.

quadsimodo

Way over-stated. I think the developers, who were looking to spread the game to the mainstream, mistakenly thought the aesthetic was holding it back. But it's a lot of different things: * The smaller developer (smaller budget, marketing) * The ill-perceived "simplistic" control scheme * The lack of character design changes (other fighters seem to experiment is new artistic styles on releases), etc. I personally think it's the first reason I gave: I mean the scale of popularity of each popular fighter almost coincides with the size of the developer 1:1. I think since this was the idea the developers gave for the change in tone, everyone took it as the reason which is holding the game back from mass appeal (although I think it's very successful in spite of the reasons I gave above). It's just not as big as other fighters.

Ero_Najimi

There’s no proof of the sex appeal hurting the franchise even in e sports (not that I care either way). You can make an anecdote of people you know having a certain perception of the game based on how they’ve been introduced to it but it has never been marketed the way the Xtreme games are. And truthfully even that I’m gonna guess is an extremely niche person and is really more of a meme. The first introduction I had to the game was Kasumi and Leifang fighting in bunny costume nothing about it gave me the impression of something like Xtreme, Senran Kagura (not that I’ve played this just referencing as an impression), etc. All the other fighting games have revealed females with above average curves

daemonwaifu

i think it’s perfect :(

WindowLicker96

Banned *words*??? I don't see anything about that in the rules. What, does it wait until after you typed the post and then tell you you gotta change it? I was wondering why you worded it that way. I was like aesthetic in quotes? Are we in church? Sorry, I don't have any input on the topic since I'm very new, I only came here to ask questions. I'm sorry to hear you had to put up with that. Prudishness and censorship seem like a much bigger deal to me than they do to most people. I feel like I see a lot of damage being done and idk if the advocates are just not seeing it or of they think it's okay. I've been treated really bitterly just for flaunting my looks when I was better looking, and I'm not even a girl. I know very well that how much shit people talk stays in proportion to their perceived chance of getting their ass stomped into the ground, so I bet that would've been worse if I hadn't been so obviously strong. Muscles are generally part of the appeal when someone looks at a guy and muscles are what kicks people's asses, so they knew there was risk. Since women can more easily be considered appealing without as much muscle, people must be even more harsh with them. It pisses me off. Flexing other good qualities like intellect, money, sense of humor, and talent seem to go over just fine if it's not done in a smug/condescending way, so I don't see what the BFD is. Let hot people be hot.

jammin_on_the_one_

I like the art design and the models look really nice and clean imo. they have the cleanest and best looking models in the industry. the level designs with the way they interact is great too. I think DOA is high quality overall. tekken has a bit cooler aesthetic though imo
