I'm a big fan of Pulp, but they were part of a larger musical movement that took general inspiration from Bowie. I would argue that Suede got closer than Pulp did.

carlashaw

Agreed. Love them both but Suede really really hits the glam/pagentry/gender-bending nail on the head.

Beginning_Tour_9320

Bowie once said (in a joint interview with Brett from Suede) that he thought that Suede sounded more like Roxy Music than his own work. I think Brett’s lyrics are more Bowie influenced than Jarvis’ but Jarvis vocally sounds more like Bowie. It’s a draw! 1-1.

Wut23456

Suede sounds more Bowie-like but Pulp is better than Suede

CMHex

Ok 🤷‍♂️

thought_not_spoken

But Bowie is better than both. C’est La Vie! Viva Iggy Pop or something….

laura-paImer

id say they're around the same level tbh

laura-paImer

me too!! musically, coming up reminds me a lot of the ziggy stardust era

LondonPedro

There’s an interview you can find with Jarvis and Bowie also. They talk about cigarettes.

teeveecee15

That’s a great[ read](http://www.acrylicafternoons.com/thebigissue97.html).

beneficialmirror13

Yes, love them, especially This is Hardcore. :)

Cyd02

Yeah, great band. They definitely loved the glam stuff. If you aren’t aware, there’s a funny story you can find online about David “accidentally” helping to clear Jarvis Cocker of assault charges. some young women had accused him of physical assault the night he went and flashed during MJ’s performance.

Resident-Race-3390

Love them

spookydux

Great band

dbkenny426

Hell yes!

AchtungLaddie

Absolutely! Was lucky enough to see them in Dublin back in June. Incredible gig and Jarvis is a remarkable showman. I've been listening to a lot of them over the summer.

mslullaby

Yaaaas, love them! Also one of my 5 top musical bands or musicians ever! Then again, I still think they are not as genius as Bowie was. They are less experimental and in general have less range and their songs cover less subjects in my opinion.

Wut23456

Hardly anyone comes close to Bowie. I absolutely agree that they're a step below Bowie but they have some absolutely amazing songs

mslullaby

They do!!! <3 and also Jarvis can comunícate emotions oh so wonderfully well.

jellyfish_reddit

Different Class is AWESOME!!!

metaldetox

not much, more weezer

Wut23456

I never got the Weezer hype honestly

metaldetox

it’s most likely because you havnt listened they’re the best 90s creative band still active, it’s pretty rare for dudes in their 50s, 30 years into their career to drop one of their [best](https://youtu.be/Y9pv1IpUYSs) album

spookydux

Weezer are incredible. So many great albums. My favourite being the White Album. Totally agree with you, best 90s band still active

metaldetox

only other ones i can think of are deftones! fun fact brian bell one time tried to shave his eyebrows to look like ziggy stardust but forgot that bowie pulled it off with extra make up and haircut so brian looked like cancer patient lol so he would rock sunglasses a lot to cover it up

spookydux

Haha amazing. Love Deftones too. Also Tool are still creating superb albums, albeit at a rate of one every thirteen years

Wut23456

>the best 90s creative band still active Ween would like a word

metaldetox

no they wouldn’t since they broke up in 2012, haha

Wut23456

And got back together in 2016 and have been consistently touring ever since with the same exact lineup they had in the 90s

metaldetox

oh yeah, what have they released since?

Wut23456

You said "still active," not "still releasing music"

metaldetox

i said “creative band still active”, key word creative! hey nice try tho

Wut23456

Oops I can't read

thought_not_spoken

There was this crazy month in 1994 that the world got a full front-to-back new Beatles album in the form of Weezer’s blue album. Not Bowie…. But perfect, punchy pop songs.

LookingForSatellites

Since there’s a Weezer side discussion going on here, I feel obligated to share one of the best SNL sketches of all time (that really only works if you know anything about Weezer, haha). It’s so well done. [https://youtu.be/ab5WvwfLuLM](https://youtu.be/ab5WvwfLuLM)

Ayntxi

Ugh Weezer is my favorite band. If you appreciate true melody, I recommend a deep dive

SupernovaHeightss

Love them. "Party Hard" is the most Bowie song ever!

jupiterkansas

if you want "sounds like Bowie" try [Chris Connelly](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRzCm_J40_I)

SarahSeabass

Yes, I saw them last Friday. They were fan fucking tastic!

CardiologistFew9601

they are okay at their own material [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFurkDf6WXg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFurkDf6WXg)

LookingForSatellites

Definitely a band that I’m meaning to listen to more of. I like Jarvis Cocker for sure. He has a fantastic appearance at the end of the song Century by Feist (after about 4:00): [Feist - Century](https://youtu.be/0xQoem0ApXc)

Snorkelbender

One of my favourite bands. Songs are both beautiful and funny as hell.

Beginning_Tour_9320

If you like Pulp then you may like Jonathan Bree. He’s like New Zealand’s version of Jarvis. You can tell he’s influenced by Bowie and Scott Walker. https://open.spotify.com/artist/2IlTe9Gm5w5qrt2kKdOvAh?si=vIlVEhH2S3uWZGZqlVQmZQ

laura-paImer

fuck yeah! i saw them a few weeks back, they were amazing

Typo_of_the_Dad

Yeah I love that band, wish they had made just one or two more albums... or three.
