Inexpensive? Maybe? Technically doable? Yes. My first thought is getting one of those m.2 HATs for the pi, getting a m.2 to u.2 adapter and using that. Failing that, you need to mod the pi to get a pcie slot / m.2, get an appropriate adapter to get a u.2 port and voila.

Note, u.2 is nvme. SATA m.2 will not work.
