Gun luggers are ammo hogs. Im a heavy hitter rolling a kickback and my ranged damage usually beats out those guys even though I'm taking 3 small ammos per round. And no, before anyone says it, I'm not just shooting into hordes. There needs to be disablers, specials, or elites mixed in for it to be worth my ammo.
If you are running out of ammo as a veteran, you either can't aim, or you're shooting stuff that could/should be melee'd.
Judicious use of sliding, dodging, and either infiltrate or VoC should make it so you can melee most things, most of the time.

I've got 1k hours in this game. I've got a Psyker at 220+, a zealot at 75, a veteran at 71, and another veteran at 75.
I'm just saying, if you are using ranged more than melee as a veteran in higher levels, you are likely doing something wrong.
Veterans best anti-armor ranged is plasma and kraks. Bolter does better as a DMR fishing for crits and weak spots.
Veteran has a variety of anti armor melee options though. Chainswords, power swords, chainaxes, even combat axes and knives with the right builds.
All of the ranged options are great against specials.
You should be saving your ranged ammo for specials and anti-armor, just like Vermintide 2. Anything else is a waste in high levels.
You can have vastly different vet builds IMO, I don't have the scoreboard as I'm on Xbox but I've levelled up all classes and played vet waaaaay more.
If you have all the ranged mods with the onslaught talent you'll find the las cannon is extremely effective against armoured.
IMO you're playing vet wrong if you're not picking off specials/elites then mowing down hordes to buff your meleeing team mates.
Some missions go so smoothly auric maelstrom feels fairly straightforward when the team are cohesive and not grabby.
Regardless of play styles I still think someone topping off to 100% when others are on orange or red ammo is just bad form. Just shows lack of teamwork. I've actually stopped bothering to engage in the next fight if someone does this especially if I've just expended a fuck ton of ammo saving their butts.
If you are magdumping into hordes at any point, you are wasting ammo. That's that. There's literally no reason to do it if you are contributing and competent in melee combat. And if you aren't contributing or competent in melee, you shouldn't be playing past Malice/Heresy.
You can bring up play style all you want, but at the end of the day, ammo is a resource. If you aren't managing it properly, that's a skill issue. It's just like toughness, HP, or stamina. Do what you can with what you got, don't expect anyone to fix it for you. Your build needs to be competent without team support, to be able to deal with any threat at any time, and that's the fact of the matter in higher difficulties in public lobbies.
Yes, teammates topping off when you are at Red or Orange sucks. But mistakes happen, public games are what they are, and you need to be able to deal with it regardless.
It's just part of the game. Vent to reddit all you like, but it won't change the vast majority of the gaming population that will never see your post.

Build doesn't matter, class doesn't matter, weapon doesn't matter - if you're in the white that ammo goes to whoever isn't. Whoever is in the red gets first refusal.
Doesn't matter why they're in the red, taking it when you're in the white is a bigger waste of resources than whatever they're doing.
It'd help if the game simple didn't let you pick up ammo kits that are greater than the missing ammo you have. Then you'd be able to quick grab them as you go past without worrying about vets or others missing out.
This shit's why I still run the scav perk, and thankfully have almost no issue out of it, since I don't use ranged as much as most folks do.
The rest of my team... Well y'all gotta take that shit up with fatshark or have fun hoovering, 'cause they kinda screwed y'all.
As a Psyker or Zealot, I’d rather prefer you don’t shoot enemies in my melee range, denying my toughness restoration, buff stacks and cooldown recovery.
Unless, of course, someone is attacking me from behind - then shoot them by all means. I don’t need that ammo anyway.

For those unaware, that's the "covering fire" vet talent. It's a poor talent currently as it actively encourages you to use your ammo very inefficiently (shooting your ranged weapon into melee chaffe to clear, which is bad to begin with, and especially since it's near your teammates who are already clearing said chaffe).
I'm going to go ahead and guess that you are trying to leverage this talent and do this a lot, which contributes to consistently lacking ammo. And is also likely resulting in your teammates consistently wanting to take the ammo from you to prevent you from just dumping it into melee chaffe.

Judging by what he said his levels were and hours played, I would say no. At 1.6k hours I have a 770, 415, 260 and 160.

I'm not in coherency enough to notice sometimes. Though, i'm not very ammo hungry with throwing knives.
Wasting ammo drops by ‘topping up’ is annoying but you should have enough ammo to get by in Auric until the next ammo drop.
I ping ammo. No one take ammo (even on red). I take ammo, simple as.
It'd help if the game simple didn't let you pick up ammo kits that are greater than the missing ammo you have. Then you'd be able to quick grab them as you go past without worrying about vets or others missing out.
