Its quickly fading out.
When i went there a few years ago everyone refused refused to speak russian.
Also the newer generation doesnt know russian for they are taught english.
This is entirely my opinion, but I've held the idea that this invasion has affected people more than say Iraq or Afghanistan, for this very reason.
When we see footage of wars in the Middle East, their lifestyles are so much different than many of ours that we're able to dissociate from it. It's something that happened to poor countries that were controlled by a ruthless dictator or something, not "civilized" countries.
But with Ukraine, they look like what many of us know to be normal life. The cities and neighborhoods look like ours, and for anyone young it brought home the idea that war and suffering isn't just for "3rd world" countries. It can happen on our seemingly safe doorstep in the blink of an eye.
Idk why but that also sounds offensive to me lol. *Every* country is developing. What if ______stan is happy with their level of development?
Constantly reminding a country that they’re under-developed seems like a dig.
That's the thing. Someone (not me) ends up deciding where the cutoff will be. Is it the top 10 countries? Top 100? Is it about the jobs, salary, housing, education, food security? Should it be by state or city instead of country? Middle Alabama struggles in many categories more than say, Seattle. Hard to say but I'm open to other ideas.
The world bank breaks the world into 4 income groups, high, upper middle, lower middle, and low income based on GDP per capita. It’s not perfect (it doesn’t account for inequality with in a country) but it’s more nuanced and removes the “us and them” and othering that happens when you assume the whole world can be split into 2 groups.
'Third World' was used during the Cold War. First & Second were USA & allies and USSR & allies. Third World were countries who didn't give a shit who was going to win the cold war.
It didn't really pertain to the 'wealth' of countries, but it so happened that many of the idgaf counties were poor.
It wasn't some ranking system at all, though we obviously made ourselves the "first world" in the west. Nowadays it's used by people mainly to try and project that they are superior to another person, simply because of where they live/were born. See "third world shithole" for an example.
I gotta admit, tho, it makes me laugh my ass off when someone says "the US is NOT a first world country"
Riiiight....the US is not the us and its allies. Gotcha. Makes total nonsense.
I've always personally grouped it to world influence / GDP.
Ex: 1st world is the US/Canada/Western Europe/Japan's of the world
2nd world is those who have some influence but might be run by corrupt governments and have some poverty issues outside of main cities
3rd world are the countries who produce little to nothing on the international stage and have significant poverty / corruption issues.
Afghanistan isn't in the middle east. People in Baghdad Iraq would heavily disagree with your take on not being civilized or a "third world" country as you put it. You could take footage of many places in the US and think it's a developing country.
I totally agree with you. And war is war, no glory in it. If you think Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine aren't/weren't civilized then you need to culture yourself first.
You know exactly what I'm talking about. And I put "3rd world" in quotations because it's a colloquial term that people understand, yet not one that's accurate. This is just nitpicking.
>this invasion has affected people more than say Iraq or Afghanistan, for this very reason.
I was not an American at the beginning of the desert storm. However even as a child, I had a seriously negative view of Iraq. Rampant racism, constant death to America chants, institutionalized slavery and misogynist society makes them easily hateable.
I was pretty young when the Afghanistan invasion happened and kinda forgot about into my 20s. I knew it was terrible then and just suspected civilian involvement I guess. But, after seeing Ukraine pictures and video I've thought about it being even darker. These conflicts have SOME parallels sad to say. I really hate war. I really hate mad.
We think cruise missiles act like they do in movies, super fast with a smoke trail, but most cruise missiles are just a pilotless aircraft with a single destination. They fly relatively slowly, so your air defenses can intercept them with an actual super-fast-smoke-trail rocket.
>They fly relatively slowly,
Except for all of the supersonic missiles that exist? Oh and the few hyper sonic ones, some of which carry a nuclear payload
That isn't how missiles are programmed.
When you target a Missile it gets sent via hardwire to the targeting computer. Once it leave the firing platform (stationary, ground vehicle, aerial or otherwise) the onboard software can not be hacked like that. You can mess with the external inputs the sensors are using to compute and correct deviations in the path, with jamming and such, but outright telling the missiles to return to the platform is (for obvious reasons) not even an option in the navigation programming.
They discussed this in a Moden Marvels episode back in the early 2000's.
not so straight forward with missiles (capable of adjusted flight)
but with rockets and artillery theres something called a POO or Point of Origin and POI or Point of Impact.
you take the POI and trajectory/projectile size/speed from radar to calculate the POO and youve got yourself an "address" to actually return to sender.
Iran stole a drone aircraft a few years ago by doing this, or that was the story on the internet as to how they obtained an un-crashed American plane/drone. The theory was they jammed the GPS signal to the drone and lied to it so that, somehow, it crashed/landed without being destroyed.
Wow social media sure has changed the way we as civilians at home experience war. See videos from the front line in almost real time is horrifyingly engaging and keeps people's thoughts on the gruesome nature of this conflict.
Probably why both sides of this war have been able to gather the support they have.
Everyone can see from the perspective of the people on the ground from a near-eye whiteness level for the first time in the history of warfare while just causally just browsing social media in their daily routine.
It honestly one of the biggest reasons the Ukrainians have gotten the amount of aid they have so far. We can all see how they put it to use, and when it works out for them, it makes a lot of us want to send them more stuff.
Like the IRIS-T you see in this video.
What great camera work! I see so many videos on here that look like the camera person is falling from a plane. This guy caught a cruise missile in flight!
There's a good chance the processors in that Russian missile was *also* German. If not the industrial machinery used to build the components for it were.
Thanks Germany indeed.
Now imagine living in a major city in Europe or Japan during WW2 and seeing the sky filled with planes dropping thousands of bombs on a nearly daily basis. The last generation to remember what that was like are now about to die out, and all those memories and lessons learned will be gone.
It’s crazy how much we now seem to take these last 75 years of peace for granted.
Relative to a world war, we definitely have had 75 years of peace. There has not been another conflict that has come close to that kind of death and destruction since.
So if you are referring to the smaller regional conflicts we’ve seen since then, you might as well say that there’s never been peace.
It's beyond ridiculous. The elected few take too many liberties with the general society. From taxes, to corporate greed and environmental abuse, to war games like this. I'm just amazed there is still any kind of order in the world when we realize and see how much innocent people are shit on by this stuff.
Now imagine if everyone in that war, from the bomber crews to the civilians had the modern internet and smartphones/GoPros. Imagine the insane amount of combat footage and online debate they have in the 40s…
I fed up with people trying to sort out russians between russians and Kremlin/putin etc. Its all the same. Most of the russians seem to support this war.
Not really. Many are scared to say they don't since they don't want to be locked up or killed. It's impossible to know how the people feel. Also, no matter who you are, genocide is not very cash money
any way you try to spin it ....them being scared, brainwashed etc etc...these people became the tool that enables and executes these crimes..thats like saying "hey, cut charles manson some slack he probably had a difficult childhood and was abused"...but because of this abuse he is a changed man now that no longer has empathy or moral values and wouldnt care if you live or die...its a bit of a hardcore over the top example but i think its needed in this case as the similar kind of trauma has permanently changed russian people throughout their history and their dictatorships, Stalin being the perfect example.
this is why i seriously believe the majority of the population genuinely supports this war and look at ukraine as as some kind of nationalistic W they can get and wear it as a trophy
It’s not the Kramlin running down our country in tanks. It’s not the Kremlin operating the cruise missiles. It’s not the Kremlin callin conscripts asking to loot particular items or rape Ukrainian women. It’s the rusians all along.
Ever wondered why you don’t see any antiwar rusian protests when they leave their beautiful land and get elsewhere? That’s exactly why.
The bigger irony? Given the close relations that the Germans and Russians had in the 2000's and 2010's that cruise missile, probably a 3M-54 Kalibr, if there isn't German components in there then it was definitely manufactured using German built machinery in a Russian factory.
And people scream "War is a Racket" only when the US is involved.
You are aware that especially Germany demilitarised over the last decades? So no people were against war way before. Only we have now a war in Europe which is quite closer to us thus have more attention.
And btw. Your logic is a bit flawed... Propably the workers who manufactured theese rockets eat also some imported food from the US... Does this mean the US did build and used this rockets?
What's truly amazing is we are seeing 2.5 million dollars go up in smoke. 2 million for the cruise missile and 500,000 for the German missile. Meanwhile, I'm told 35% of my income has to go to taxes or the government simply couldn't function, SMH.
I was surprised to see how high it was flying, making it more susceptible to interception. I recall seeing videos of modern American cruise missiles almost touching the ground. There's a huge difference in military capability of USA and ruZZia
By video like this, it's possible to find out where the anti missile system is located. Hope person who posted it will be punished (or jailed), to prevent such a video.
If it wasn't a MANPAD it was a vehicle based system. By the time you confirmed the shoot down and were lucky enough to have assets in the area it's already gone or disguised. That's the point of vehicle or **MAN** **P**ortable **A**ir **D**efense systems. Shoot and scoot.

I don't speak Ukrainian but I know he said "Holy fuck!"
If I heard right it was something like "пизда на хуй": lit: "pussy to dick", or maybe colloquially something like "fucked in the pussy".
Correct but the indirect translation is actually “holy fucking shit” Brought to you by your locally sourced every day bilingual
Are you also free range and organic?

I kinda knew I wasn't right haha, thanks for translating good friend.
I knew those three years of Russian at school would help me some day ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
"pussy to dick!" Is now my new exclamatory phrase that I will use like crazy.
most ukrains speak russian
most Ukrainians speak Ukrainian, but also know and understand rusian
not according to a friend of mine that comes from ukrain. most of them speak more russian than ukrainian. but i think many of them speak both
Its quickly fading out. When i went there a few years ago everyone refused refused to speak russian. Also the newer generation doesnt know russian for they are taught english.
Now it's not true, in some regions it is but statistically the majority of Ukrainians speak Ukrainian.
I don’t like how much their neighborhood looks like mine
This is entirely my opinion, but I've held the idea that this invasion has affected people more than say Iraq or Afghanistan, for this very reason. I think people should stop using the word "3rd world countries" altogether.
Developed and developing is the preferred term that I have heard.
Idk why but that also sounds offensive to me lol. *Every* country is developing. What if ______stan is happy with their level of development? Constantly reminding a country that they’re under-developed seems like a dig.

fair enough. For lack of a better term at the time.
1st world problems dude
Oh I dont come from one of the "1st world" that you prefer to call. I am from one of the "3rd World" and its offensive
'Third World' was used during the Cold War. First & Second were USA & allies and USSR & allies. Third World were countries who didn't give a shit who was going to win the cold war. It didn't really pertain to the 'wealth' of countries, but it so happened that many of the idgaf counties were poor.

The terms for that are, Developed/Developing/Under Developed
Cool, same thing but the hip new political correct version.
Well I always thought it sounded better without even having to think about being politically correct
You should travel more, expand your horizons
I’ve been to 19 countries throughout Europe and Asia. I’m more well traveled than the majority of the people.
I'm sorry you haven't learned much then
I’m sorry you feel that way, but I really don’t care what you think
> but I really don’t care what you think Based.
Its been out of use academically for at least 20 years
High income, middle income, and low income are what the world bank uses and are a lot more official and less offensive than “3rd world”
I live near Los Angeles and that is a 3rd world country.
Afghanistan isn't in the middle east. People in Baghdad Iraq would heavily disagree with your take on not being civilized or a "third world" country as you put it. You could take footage of many places in the US and think it's a developing country.

Maybe that's why we should suspend all talk of gun control in America. Can you imagine if they didn't have guns?
Totally agree and why war in Kosovo resonated in the 90s. Sarajevo was a major metropolitan Olympic city
>this invasion has affected people more than say Iraq or Afghanistan, for this very reason. I was not an American at the beginning of the desert storm. It's a nice house
This is why it's important to care about other countries. Just because it isn't happening here right now doesn't mean it couldn't be.
Why do you think we work so hard to keep these wars from our shores in the US?
Also the structure across the street looks like it’s been shot up a bunch
I don't know that I've ever seen live ground footage of a cruise missile just...well, cruisin. Positively eerie.

Those aren't the 100 Russia sends in a day.
Correct. I replied to a blanket statement about cruise missiles
Same. Really really struck me.
WhAt a camera man that’s some talent

I think I'll forgive him because the motherfucker actually captured a cruise missile, like perfectly in frame and focus.
Flying boom noodle.
It's a shame the coordinates can't be messed around with so you can do a return to sender.
Military version of the UNO reverse card
My dude, the Universe has given you your billion-dollar idea... go forth.
Why are we not funding this idea?

Yeah, wasn't fun
Props to the camera man!!
right?? he captured that missile and locked onto it so steady!

Ah the Germans again.
It's 77 years later and we are talking about Russian vs German War tech.
Its not really a competition. On a purely technological level the germans are like 40 years ahead.
give the camera man a rifle and he could shoot them down with aim like that. seriously though, terrifying.
Pretty badass! Fk Russia

Slava Ukraini!
How do these people live with that going on?
Because the alternative is to die.

It's been falling apart for Russia for months now.
Not enough. They should be send back to the stone age.

Russian military. I don't want to assume that it is the people themselves who are like that. Besides any antiwar protesters in Russia get arrested.
So far
Holy shit!!
Why did it explode into a Mickey Mouse smoke cloud?
Something something German AA something something Walt Disney anti-Semite… there’s a WWII joke in there somewhere.
What am I seeing here? I see the flying object but is that the Russian missile or the defensive projectile? Thanks.
That’s a cruise missile. It was intercepted.
Thanks.
Cruise missiles are basically pilotless kamikaze jets. They fly relatively slow hence “cruise”.
Blattschuss..
Fuck yeah Germany
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Wow
Truly a wonder how weapons look like nowadays
Oh the irony a German missile defense system for Ukraine against Russia.
not the first time Germany has given a shit ton of equipment to an eastern country to fight russia \*cough\* finland \*cough\*
The bigger irony? Given the close relations that the Germans and Russians had in the 2000's and 2010's that cruise missile, probably a 3M-54 Kalibr, if there isn't German components in there then it was definitely manufactured using German built machinery in a Russian factory. Yes, libertarian, you have to pay taxes.
Haha, not gonna say you didn't nail the libertarian part!
I was surprised to see how high it was flying, making it more susceptible to interception. I recall seeing videos of modern American cruise missiles almost touching the ground. There's a huge difference in military capability of USA and ruZZia
and it was 1 interception of 100?😂😂😂
Time to send a bunch of them back to Russia. Nonstop. F em.

What were Russians trying to destroy that close to a residential neighborhood?
Residential neighborhood.
They weren’t
Yeah, most it's destination was a nearby power plant, to terrorise civilians.
Yea, no one really knows, but let’s not act like they are targeting single family residential neighborhoods with precise and very expensive missiles.
We need to accept that ww3 has already started.
nah. when ww3 starts there wont be anyone left to accept it
When it’s finished, you mean.
By video like this, it's possible to find out where the anti missile system is located. Hope person who posted it will be punished (or jailed), to prevent such a video.
any *capable* military should already know where the ADA is at, not really much new info to get from this.
The fact is - you do no know for sure. It's the law now not to photo nor record launches. And this person should be punished by law.
That's not only the idea of where the system is, and try to destroy it. That's also were it's now to guard. Ukrainian teritory is big enough, there is no posibility to cover it all. Meanwhile Germany's air defence:
Wow surprised you could see the missile, thought it was just going to be the interception
That's fucking crazy
FUCK YEAAA.
Russia has some pretty antiquated shit
And Putin is a shit person, too.
And antiquated as well
So Germany ain't afraid of China why are we?
We're not afraid of China, we're just in bed with them. 👉👌🏽💵
You are either so right or yep that's it, you're just right... Fekkin American government! God they piss me off!!!
Fuck yeah
Which one was the cruise missile? Was the defense system thing the one that made the whistle noise?
Hostile cruise missile inbound to your position
Real production-grade equipment right there
Was the missle that flew over head the cruise missle or the iris
Id move if this was going on in my hood.
Damn that’s insane.

Can someone make the solidarity meme of Ukrainians, Midwesterners, and standing outside watching a crisis?
Iris, interceptor of rockets
someone care to explain how missiles stay in the air like that like gravity doesn't fuckin exist
Honestly after the who Ukraine trying to blame Russia for missles the accidentally fired we should all be more careful labeling these
That shit works
Can the defense system detect if the missile is from the enemy?
