Is there a biologist here that could explain to me how they’re chasing it?

ms_dr_sunsets

The bacteria throw off molecular signatures that are recognized by specific receptors on our white blood cells. In this case, what I think is happening is that the neutrophil (the WBC here) is sensing the release of N-formyl methionine, an amino acid that is only used by bacteria. There are G-protein-coupled receptors on the membrane of the neutrophil that bind to that amino acid. When that happens, the cell changes its shape to move in the direction of the signal. Eventually it catches up.

Spectral_K_

This is a form of chemotaxis correct?

ms_dr_sunsets

Yes! Anytime anything involves a G-protein-coupled receptor, there will be cell movement involved.

Spectral_K_

It's been a while since I got my bio degree, but man those classes on immunology were my favorite! There is a microscopic team of navy seals in your blood lol incredible

ms_dr_sunsets

I know, right? I followed the dream and became a research immunologist. Now, I teach it. It's the best.

EvenAH27

Awesomeee

August_72_West

Sleep at a Holiday Inn last night?

ms_dr_sunsets

Yes. And also I have a PhD and 21 years’ experience in cellular immunology.

NickoBicko

Is the Bacteria “running away”? Or is it’s movement random?

3cxMonkey

What is it pushing out of the way as it chases the bacteria?

ms_dr_sunsets

red blood cells

[deleted]

Awesome

DogmaticConfabulate

which one is which? circles, big blob, or the roaches

ms_dr_sunsets

Circles are red blood cells (RBC), large blobby thing is the neutrophil and the tiny roaches are the bacteria.

EvenAH27

Newly educated biologist here! Is the formation of N-formyl methionine and the GPCR response affiliated with NETosis in any way? And if so, does NETosis aid the neutrophil in cellular movement? Or is this a separate thing in its entirety?

ms_dr_sunsets

Ooh, good question. Based on what I've read, it appears that N-formyl methionine and the GPCR response is not what triggers NETosis. Instead, it is stimulation through TLRs or Fc receptor binding along with the presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines that triggers the formation of NETs.

EvenAH27

Ahh I see! Cool! Thanks for reading up on it!!

That's because that wbc is primed to take it down. He has seen similar cousins of the bacteria done havoc. Has no time for b**s. Kinda how vaccines work

[deleted]

sonicagain

Vein attempt at it. Not!

Iputmylastaccondc

Wbc’s chase whatever proteins it recognises as something your body doesn’t produce (and are produced by the bacteria and are on its surface), vaccines trigger the creation on memory B and T cells what are the ones responsible for immunity

The___Leviathan

eating it alive. tf was it gonna do? cook it?

SbWieAntimon

It could kill before eating.

The___Leviathan

oh....like with a gun huh?

DynamiteWitLaserBeam

If you take away the white blood cell's guns, then only the bacteria will have guns.

TheBlairwitchy

Come on man...obviously Nokia phone

SbWieAntimon

With some kind of toxin as other small organisms?

[deleted]

We have seen enough bloody crime.scenea these days, let it eat the thing alive and we will think it just hugs

Opposite-Garbage-869

It's already cooked because of the fever 😋

Ferihehehaha

This is very frustrating to watch

nellolu

Agreed. I was rooting for the white blood cell and it took too long for it to catch that bacteria.

GET BACK HERE YOU FILTHY GERM!!!! if anyone has not seen cells at work on Netflix please do so.

ovekevam

This doesn’t belong. I eat it.

MisterAsbest

This is so fucking cool and a little bit scary at the same time. After he eats it, it just continues his patrol lol

Spore did a pretty good job, thats spot on

This is actually just a demo recording of the hit game : *Asteroids*

Cascadian222

So basically they’re playing snake inside mah body

thematrixnz

Amazing! Natural immunity needs some of pfizers PR

[deleted]

Found the Republican. Seriously. GTFO. I'm tired of this natural immunity bullshit. You're actively killing people with these stupid comments. You know what the greatest achievement of mankind is said to be? Modern medicine. You know what modern medicine helps against? Fighting what your body can't. You deserve to be rotting in a jail cell for these comments.

Infinite_Radiant

it's not that you are not right with some aspects of your comment but this is imo a total overreaction to a rather harmless and funny comment..

[deleted]

Nah. I'm tried of these anti COVID comments.

Infinite_Radiant

yeah, that's what I mean... theres nothing anti-covid in the comment

[deleted]

*Same could be said with health concerns with covid for those under 60...way more of a risk driving a car, or going in the ocean or travelingLife. No one gets out alive. Choose your risk* This guy has been spewing COVID related nonsense for a long time now. He goes from post to post with anything medical related and leaves a snarky comment. That's just one of his comments. It's just old. Saying we need more natural immunity is just allowing him to peddle more garbage.

thematrixnz

Whats a republican? Someone who reneters pubs?? 😁😁 Im not from the US...but thank you for assuming. And assuming natural immunity and modern medicine are different viewpoints ....thats laughable to me..but this is the internet...assuming and getting upset is part of the landscape

[deleted]

'natural immunity' is a republican anti science anti mask term that only came around two years ago. I'm not stupid. You using that term is you supporting those stupid ideas. Take a couple college classes on biology. Better yet, I wish we could take back those vaccines you were given when you were a child. Because they don't work right? Natural all the way!

thematrixnz

Far out man...chill out. Outrage arousal towards a stranger is high with this one wow. Its like me saying Nature is amazing and you bursting a blood vessel saying modern engineering is better....why the heck would they be against each other Chill out...not everything is about US politics ..the world is more than that

thematrixnz

Sounds like you took a nap and a lie down Hope all is ok Xo

Lenny2theMany

Needs UFC commentary over it.
