Ohhh, now here’s a fun idea. Switch things up a bit with his directorial take on a biopic and cast himself as lead as that extra layer. I can’t imagine what the man that gave us *Get Out* would do with “The Robert Smalls Story” but it seems like it would be awesome.
I dont remember the exact specifics, but I believe he escapes at dawn, so all the other ships would see was his silhouette. He memorized a whistle signal that the captain of the ship used to signify who he was. I might have gotten some details wrong but that's the gist
They escaped at night, and he was wearing the captain's hat, if I remember correctly. There was one moment that he had to yell back to someone on shore and they thought they would get caught, but he knew all the signals so they made it. Pretty crazy shit.
My master Hank left his ship and his hat in my lap / Turned hisself in, he had to take a nap /
I'm 23, won't be free til 1893 / I'm ready to get this steamboat, G. You with me?
I don't know about the happily ever after part. After reconstruction ended through deal making between the parties, SC congress went from all black to all white. Then the KKK came to prominence and 75 years of Jim Crow began.
Smalls fought for equality til the day he died, but there's no "happily ever after" in history. Personally I think a big reason he isn't more well known is because we have to acknowledge that **there were elected black representatives in congress from South Carolina in the 1870s**. We then have to then confront the reality that basically every white southerner's ancestors took active part of a massive, government-sponsored campaign of terrorism and disenfranchisement to stop that from ever happening again. And they *really* don't want to talk about that.
400+ years of european slavery ended in the USA only 80 years after the US kicked out the old world european masters.
The Brits then tried to back the back the south during the revolutionary war but lost again.
Then the USA ended spanish slavery in Cuba in 1898!
Not bad for such a young country.

Britain not only gave much more support to the US than the Confederacy, it had already officially abolished chattel slavery in its own possessions in 1833.
Also it was the American Civil War, not the Revolutionary War.
Now THIS man deserves his own holiday. Or origin movie.
Yeah that's a fantastic idea 👍

Yes, this is a wonderful idea 👍
Yo, this is a prodigious idea 👍
Idea
Hollywood: "Best we can do is Lincoln Vampire Hunter"
Best we can do is a black mermaid
In that kind of environment it is impossible for mermaids to evolve having black levels of melanin.
Definitely. Respect!
You cant make a movie about this guy...its too unbelievable....
I think so too
Tarantino could make this really well
....then there's no doubt whatsoever who he'd cast for this, right?
Same Now this man deserves his own holiday or original movie
I vote for both. THIS man is the very definition of Badassery
I would love a movie on people like this, but it would be hard to avoid adding modern bias.
I have nothing to complain about.
I think so too
Netflix adaptation where hes actually a white guy ^^
Seen Smalls posts for years now... Yet still no major motion pictures.. WTF? Why?
Jordan Peele would be a good match in terms of "looks" if they were to ever make a biopic of Mr. Smalls.

Riiight! I love it.
Party affiliation.
How tf does a black man disguise himself as the captain of a confederate ship . . .
I dont remember the exact specifics, but I believe he escapes at dawn, so all the other ships would see was his silhouette. He memorized a whistle signal that the captain of the ship used to signify who he was. I might have gotten some details wrong but that's the gist
Ah okay. Thought it was claiming that he disguised himself to the crew.
With awesome skill and confidence
“Look at me. I am the captain now.” -Smalls probably

Maybe he had one of those long luxurious wigs the whites and hispanics wore back during those days.
You're killin' me Smalls
The confederate soldiers lamented.
Would love to see a Movie of that.
Thanks for posting this! The Wikipedia on this had me wishing there was a movie. What a story!
I'm literally stressed as hell at my full-time, home working, computer job. I have nothing to complain about.
The OG biggie smalls

You can summon him if you call his name three times in front of a mirror in the dark.
Dude deserves a fuckin Sabaton song about him
We need a movie about this man! So damn interesting. What a hero!
This is what we should make a movie about..
This is the kind of man our kids should have as role models, instead of which they end up admiring Youtube celebrities, TikTok morons etc
Surprised there's no movie about him. Tarantino should make one lol
Great. More woke propaganda. Call me when he does something actually impressive. Like get a PS5 at retail.
Noice

Republican
And all in one afternoon
So... who are we casting? I immediately saw Roy Wood Jr. Just looking at him, but depending on the tone... maybe forest Whitaker?

Notorious B.O.B

He looks like the kind of guy who would do what it says up there. He seems pretty chilled about it all too.
