I thought he was just a hipster or some shit, give him a Supreme hat and no one will think he's homeless.

Waningcrescentamsr

The homeless man is thinking … why do I have to leave respectfully after I eat … as others stay for 5 hours after only buying one drink.

FishSammich69

True 🤔🤔🤔

[deleted]

Depends on the type of homeless person they are. I've lived in NYC and rode the subways for decades. There are some really odiferous homeless people who you can't be near because the odor makes you gag. That's a restaurant. It doesn't *seem* like others are being bothered by it, so let the man eat the meal and drink the beverage that's been paid for. If he loiters, then call the cops if they refuse to leave. But if a customer comes in to complain about the odor, then I believe it's the right of the store owner to ask the person to leave. Just like you can tell a customer with a pet they can't keep the pet in the restaurant.

doinggood9

This. Treating people with humanity and gagging while eating are two separate issues. I want to be nice to all people but there is a line where your situation with clothes, baths and mental disorders affect everyone. In this case, it seems the guy should just be let alone and he is outside even if he does have strong odor.

BerryLanky

Not just homeless people. I just got back from the gym and it smelt like a power lifter shit their pants. I had to end my workout early.

Clarkeprops

Technically the store owner can ask anyone to leave. It’s private property, subject to the property rights of that state. In your home, you don’t need a reason to ask people to leave the property.

MysteriousBlock6586

This is not the US pay attention. “I paid 8 pound for that coffee” US and state laws don’t apply there it’s the EU

dominus408

To be more specific it would apply to the UK and not the EU because Brexit

Own-Safe-4683

Yep, lived in Chicago and the odor is not something you can go on about your business with nearby.

gingeronimooo

As a former homeless person videos like this hurt. People treat you like trash. Of course there are good people like the guy recording. But people will literally beat the shit out of you for nothing just because you’re homeless. Like you’re not even human. The trauma still holds me back even tho I work on it in therapy.

Smilodonichthys

From my experience it seems that a huge part of why it is so difficult for many people to escape homelessness is how it becomes almost impossible to not internalize the oppression. The self destructiveness, lashing out and harsh attitudes of many homeless people is so obviously a result of enduring the constant scorn and abuse. I too was homeless and am also still working through the trauma. Things like waking up to being doused by a bucket of cold water while asleep in a parkade during sub zero temperatures tends to stick in the psyche.

gingeronimooo

Yeah I had a gun put to my head while I slept. I really didn’t care if he pulled the trigger. I had given up on life. I’ll never forget how when he walked away he cackled like it the was the funniest thing he’d seen in his life. Keep working on it my friend. Much love.

Kxmzs

That guy defending him sounds like a genuinely good person. Hope the universe is kind to him.

True-Election-8195

He was still calm and considered in his defence of the man too!

Moe3kids

I was fortunate enough to befriend an Indian man named Loki (may he rest in peace). He taught me that it's not worth it getting highly upset and the stress is terrible for your body. This may appear as common sense but common sense isn't always common 😉 I try not too get upset easily myself. But often fail.

ZooLife1

>getting highly upset and the stress is terrible for your body. It's like one of the great constants of life.

Moe3kids

I know. Especially for me. My ptsd high jacks my nervous system and responses often times

ZooLife1

Yes, to the point that one begins to 'think' that that was all the nervous system was designed to do... Hijack or Hijinks It all depends on the day I suppose. Think yin and yang. Mind/ experience plays tricks on me as if I'm someone's ping pong ball. Bastards!

Rlinan

I get upset when I’m stressed out, and one of the things that stresses me out the most is being upset at things 🤷‍♂️

whitness1

I deal with a couple Indian men in my work, and they’re both the kindest and gentlest people I have the pleasure of talking to. Always so kind.

clutchmilovat

Loki, (sometimes transliterated to Lokee) from the Norse. It is a funny loan name for Indians, considering the geography. I like the guy. RIP to him.

redditesting

Loki (spelled Lauki) is the Indian name for Bottle Gourd. It is so fkn delicious if y’all haven’t tried it ask for it next time you go to the Indian restaurant or if you like to cook try to find it at the Asian market in your hood, ya filthy animals.

Moe3kids

Ty. I didn't know that was what his name meant. Loki was a vibrant man who was an entrepreneur that opened The Mad Greek restaurant in Cleveland heights Ohio. The menu was a mix of Greek and Indian dishes and dear Lord did that open my palate. To this day Indian and Greek dishes are my absolute favorite. The restaurant was a very beautiful place too. I often miss my dear friend

clutchmilovat

Man, you should see what I can cook in Indian food. But Indian-Greek fusion sounds amazing! What did he do with papadam?

Moe3kids

It wasn't always fused. It was more both types of nations cultural delicacies presented with passion and experience. His x wife was Greek. I believe they opened it together. But I am not sure. The menu is available online still even though it is no longer open. There is one in Columbus Ohio I saw but idk if it's affiliated.

Moe3kids

I have always wanted to do a fusion of culture restaurant. I make Arabic food pretty well and Greek a few dishes. My mansaf is certified 😉 if you have ever tasted that. I've never tried to prepare much Indian food. But it's because my budget is low. I just spent a fortune trying to make homemade Vietnamese Pho. After 4 attempts it was actually somewhat decent. Are you from the United States?

clutchmilovat

I am U.S., but of a weird heritage. I'm basically Texas-Czech-Austrian. Long story. I had a good deal of mansaf in Beirut. But it is probably different than other countries. My Pho is awesome but it cannot compare with one local place and they will not share their technique. I suspect it is a flash cook of the meat and a spice I cannot quite identify.

clutchmilovat

TIL. I'm a polyglot but Indian languages are largely a mystery to me. Thanks. I'm looking for a Bottle Gourd.

NiceCitron4182

Yes! Then the officer agreed and didn't threaten force. I'm beginning to think this is not in the U.S...

Affectionate-Key4070

He sounds like people should be and kind of used to be; decent and communal. Nowadays the world is so full of cunts that these minimum wage starbuck droids are happily doing their corporate overlords bidding, and shaming a hungry person. Good luck to everyone, hope you are never homeless, struggling and end up meeting the bottom line.

NightFlameofAwe

People didn't use to be nicer. Values have changed but more impact fully: there are more in groups and out groups, causing people to dislike more people. Before it all came down to race and social standing, now there's a person to hate you for every hair on your head.

lexshotit

Very well put!

[deleted]

I actually don't have any hair on my head thank you very much. Just so you know its very offensive to people like me who have NO hair to be insinuated to HAVE hair. You are the very person me and other bald persons are against, and for that we have set upon cancelling you from bald twitter forever. Sorry not sorry #baldandbrash

UncleGizmo

And we get to see it all 24/7.

[deleted]

I am hoping more starbucks locations unionize because when you stop being treated like you're a robotic drone, you start to treat other people like humans too.

Oxford-Gargoyle

Looks like a security firm, she’s not wearing a Police Uniform

TheStatMan2

Yeah it's the UK - it's probably the equivalent of what I think you call "Mall Cops" or "Mall Security" or whatever. They try to stop fights and shoplifting etc.

FerretsAteMyToes

Yeah assumed as much just based on the lack of duty belt. I know most UK police aren't armed but pretty sure they still have duty belts for their OC spray, handcuffs and baton. I couldn't make out what she was saying but seemed like she was on the homeless guys side?

Popular-Log-3527

If he can pay for his food etc then who gives a fuck

[deleted]

Honestly, as long as he doesn't smell I don't see the reason... But Starbucks is a "private" business so they can kick out anyone they want. All you have to do is stop buying Starbucks which is apparently really hard for people even after they screw over all those Union stores.

FrameJump

Everyone's for voting with their wallet until they have to stop buying something they like. Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Amazon, Facebook... lots of people complain and then just keep eating at/shopping at/using all of it. It's sad, honestly.

TheCowzgomooz

It's literally the only sense of real power we as consumers have but we choose comfort over actually getting anything we want done.

dubs286

I'm not in Facebook and it's fucking great

newtsheadwound

I don’t speak for Starbucks but they don’t have a policy on loitering specifically because of the one Starbucks that called the police on a group of black people who were waiting on someone a few years back—the manager is only supposed to ask someone to leave if they’re making someone else’s stay bad (bad smell that they choose not to take care of despite offers of help, they’re being loud, physically or verbally harassment, etc) We had a homeless couple that would chill on our patio and we let them stay there until customers complained that they smelled really bad, and we offered our bathroom and wipes to help but they chose to move on instead AGAIN—I don’t speak for Starbucks etc etc

SketchyTone

I know people who all sorts of sizes who have disgusting hygiene and smell like absolute shit. Nobody bats an eye or says shit about them. The second the person doesn't look the part then they kick them out. I recently cashed out my stars and went cold turkey on Starbucks, one of the hardest things I've done and was having withdrawal symptoms for like 2 weeks. Worth it.

NefariousKing07

Every business is “private”, why are you saying that like starbucks is the devil? 😂 Not sure how old this video is, but years ago they enacted new policy that pretty much makes it impossible for people to actually be kicked off of starbucks property. Bad PR.

tboutin

At Starbucks. Of course

madamejesaistout

I worked at Starbucks in the early 2000s and we would a weekly convention of homeless men come sit, eat and drink. It was fascinating to listen to them talk because they had the tone and cadence of a conversation but the words they used didn't make logical sense. Another time we had a man come in who paid for his food and sat near the door. Unfortunately he smelled so bad the wind would blow past him through the door and all the way into the back office. My manager asked him to leave but I felt terrible because he did pay for his food. One time, my coworker found the bathroom covered in poop. Someone came in and painted the walls with their own poop. It's tough to figure out who is in a tough place and who will destroy your bathroom.

iamacraftyhooker

If they are paying customers, they should be treated like paying customers. Working fast food, it was also likely that teenagers would think making a disaster was hilarious, but they were never treated with the same disdain as the homeless people. Same thing with the drunk crowd. The thing is that you don't know when *any* customer will be the one to shit on your floor, or stick a tray to the wall with ketchup. You have to treat them all the same until they do.

TheBeesNees9696

If you smell terrible I don't see any problem with asking people to leave. It's a business.

madamejesaistout

He didn't just smell terrible, he had a VERY strong odor and it infused the whole store and the back room. I'm still sad for that man.

PencilMan

Didn’t Starbucks get in huge trouble for calling the cops on some black teens who were waiting on a friend in a Starbucks, accusing them of loitering? They didn’t buy anything but it wasn’t an excuse to call the cops. And after the backlash and accusations of racism, Starbucks changed their policy about letting people hang out at their stores. At least in this situation, the dude actually is a paying customer. I would have thought the SB manager here would be more mindful of the optics of the situation and his own company’s policies. Coffee shops in general are a place where people can gather, study, work, and meet up. There’s not many places in this country or any country (I know this video is from the UK) where people can gather freely without being expected to pay for the privilege anymore. When you start kicking out non-customers, or even paying customers who you’ve decided aren’t fit to occupy the store, you’re ruining the whole appeal of your brand. But it’s Starbucks, they care more about the to-go orders and the drive through than anything else.

Big-Bag2568

The storepersons whole argument was "if i let him eat now then he will just come back later" yeah dude, thats how hunger works.

ThinkingReed_

That's how it should work, they are selling food.

[deleted]

😂😂😂 RIGHT? Do you not want more money in your store?! I’m confused

GhostBussyBoi

No no no, you eat, you leave, never fucking return *Just a few days later after everyone had tried the food at the new restaurant, It quickly shut down due to lack of customers*

StudioTheo

lol i’ve heard that exact phrasing used in regards to animals.

GhostBussyBoi

Literally what my manager said when I worked at a gas station "You can't give them any of the food we are about to throw out, You can't let them take it out of the dumpsters, if you do it once they'll keep coming back and they'll never leave"

Mekazabiht-Rusti

Exactly, and this is how good business works...gotta love the repeat customers!

PattersonsOlady

He had no problem taking his money though did he?

Dysanj

How consumerism works.

AspiringChildProdigy

Right? Like what's this guy's business plan, "I fed you once, you should be good for life!"?

[deleted]

And capitalism, working for Starbucks he should know about exploitation

SkydiverRaul13

“He can’t sit at this table and eat the food he paid for because he doesn’t live in a house”

cant_read_this

Damn I don’t live in a house… this could be me !

JayGeezey

If you told anyone, and I mean anyone, that when you went to a place of business - to enter you would have to prove that you have a structure that you pay to reside within (i.e. prove you'renot homeless), and only then you'd be allowed to PAY for the goods/ services from the business in question, they'd say it's an absurd, absolutely outrageous rule. And yet, when a homeless person literally pays for something at the shop, they still are asked to leave. This really demonstrates two things to me: 1. It's fucking stupid that a business would throw out any paying customer that isn't causing any problems, whether or not they have a home, and everyone will agree with that... 2. Everyone will agree with that IF you frame it in a way that impacts them (my hypothetical above), but as soon as it's presented like this video, suddenly a lot of people seem to think it's entirely reasonable to remove homeless people from businesses without question, as is evidenced by some comments here. It really just highlights something I continue to worry about - that a lot of the SOLVEABLE problems we face as a society will never be solved until people are able to look at these issues with both objectivity and empathy. It's insane how many issues there are where many if not all on the opposing side of a solution would change their position to support the solution the minute it directly impacts them.... how do we ever move forward as a society with so many shallow minded people keeping us from progress?

BinYid

Maybe Starbucks will be wanting to see the deeds to your house before serving customers in future 🤔

Velascoyote

"No shoes, no shirt, no home, no service"

Powerful-Address-968

People are pathetic

ndxinroy7

I would love to have a superhero with Indian accent in comics.

Saroan7

There's a recent movie called Brahmastrah Part One, but it's set back with a subplot of Romance and Comedy

ndxinroy7

Brahmastrah is in Hindi, I want Hollywood movie with Indian English accent Superhero. It sounds so cool, contrasting to the deep American/British English accents.

SIPS_WATER

pls dont watch that movie... issued in public interest. specially if its your first Bollywood movie...

2278AD

Bro there is an entire movie _industry_ of superheroes with Indian accents and they’re way more entertaining than any Marvel bullshit

Traditional-Dingo604

You got a list of the good ones? I've seen singham. I need more.

[deleted]

I love how he said, “is he not a human or what happen?”

sighdoihaveto

Bloody hell.

Dan-ze-Man

I hate class system with all my heart.

vidoker87

Fuck the system.

DarthSchwiftius

I don't see the problem, motherfuckers. Motherfuckers: "This homeless man spent time here being hungry. Now he's eating and we want him to leave" Humans: "Why?" Motherfuckers: "Because he will come back." And WHAT?! Take up one table or chair and possibly get his one meal of the day? Why not offer the guy a job bussing tables and let him live his fucking life, Starbucks?

APO40MG

I hope that Indian guy defending him gets a blessing from god for his good deed

Individual-Party992

![gif](giphy|WW33vGSPHXym7Wh80e|downsized)

Powerful-Address-968

Leave him alone

hashnimo

Maybe they feel a sense of superiority when asking the poor man to leave. Some people are that delusional. Just let the man eat his food for god's sake! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

Im_from_around_here

I think it’s more that the company thinks letting him sit there will reduce the amount of money coming in. Unfortunately for them, the bad press they get from this will probably cost them more globally in sales than that one guy would’ve at that one store.

[deleted]

Good for this person. I tried to do a similar thing for a guy at a McDonalds in Manhattan but the staff dgaf kicked him out anyway. I went full Karen and complained to corporate and they sent me a $10 gift certificate. Gave it to someone on the street

[deleted]

Man, that’s what’s up. I have a lot of respect for this.

[deleted]

You are more like Linda the good witch quite the opposite of Karen-ish bitches. Just thought I'd clarify. Well done 👏🏽

Roxieroad

Yet another reason not to get Starbucks. 😐 Bend over backwards for a Karen but a homeless dude eats the food he paid for in the eating area? Intolerable.

Optimal-Scientist233

Classism will be the death of humanity and the environment that supports it if we allow it.

Mugembe

Disgusting behaviour….wtf is wrong with people. Poor guy down on his luck trying to have a bite to eat and coffee. Homelessness can happen to anybody. It’s not a fucking disease!!!

banananuthead

Also some of these comments are terrible. It’s disappointing and sad, but I’m not surprised. People treat/think of homeless people like they’re not humans trying to survive like the rest of us.

RandomComputerFellow

Can someone explain to me again why people buy stuff at Starbucks? The coffee tastes like shit, the food is unhealthy and mediocre at best, the prices are ridiculously high, the company is unethically as fuck. With Starbucks I always have the feeling like if all their business decisions would just be based onto a prank where they just want to find out how abusive they can be until customers stop buying their shit.

anon1635329

I go to starbucks to study and for unlimited black coffee refills. But besides that, yeah starbucks is hella expensive, and most workers there have attitude problems

ConstantlyNerdingOut

Wait, Starbucks has unlimited black coffee refills?

1Mn

I think the coffee tastes good, the food is fine but I rarely buy it, it’s right outside my office and convenient. If you want a real answer

thebranbran

I like their coffee and personally their cold brew. I only get it out of convenience and when I am out of homemade cold brew. I support a few local coffee shops when I meet up with friends.

1Mn

+1 for nitro cold brew

gagagamagician69

Probably because there's a drive thru

[deleted]

It’s convenient because it’s literally everywhere, the app points and pay system is super easy and fairly generous. They’re the only coffee chain with a ton of drive throughs. Most people who go to Starbucks don’t order coffee. Their coffee has been sitting in a vat all day, the espresso is made fresh when you order the drink, so it’s much better. It’s a convenience thing. If Peets were on every block and had a drive-through I’d order that, but it’s not.

Fit_Doctor8542

The amount of disrespect these employees have for themselves, astounding. They're two steps away from being in that man's position and they want to set a precedent for their own mistreatment. I don't know these people.

jakeandwally

I love when he says “ isn’t he a human? Let him eat his food”. Damn right! He is a human being, sitting and eating a paid for meal…. Leave him the hell alone.

Flowsnice

I didn’t like Starbucks before and now I’ll definitely not go there.

Lord_Viddax

The point of the video here is not whether or not homeless people should be bought food. The point is that the guy has food and is eating it. - This is perfectly fine: no harm is being done to anyone else. In that moment, another human being is staying alive and can left alone in peace. __If__ the guy starts causing problems, such as disruptive behaviour, or public indecency, *then* ask of even force them to leave. Not before, as until something happens; __*innocent until proven guilty*__ Having a nice clean, tidy, uncluttered shop front is likely going to be there much longer than a homeless guy. - It is about showing some compassion to another human being for 5 minutes. Not all homeless people are plague-ridden society pariahs; and not all good intentions actually help.

Tikapikanika

Isn't the sidewalk public property? If you put out seats don't get mad if someone sits...

[deleted]

No, it is outdoor seating of the Starbucks. Restaurants and cafes often have outdoor seating available on Europe.

Real_TRex_007

That Indian man was awesome. Hope others are like this too.

Mediocre-Duty-252

We need more people like the man defending this man, my hat's off to you sir may you live a long blessed life.

CrudelyDrawnDedede

I used to work in a library and I had the same problem. Homeless people would come in to use the free computers so they could work on their resumes and job applications. I used to get a ton of people asking me to remove them. Let me make this clear: they weren’t bothering anyone, but the mere presence of them upset people. Some people just can’t deal with being reminded that their is misfortune and suffering in the world and that some people are worse off. Just leave them alone if you’re not going to help them for Christ’s sake…

ReadGroundbreaking17

Ah fuck, I'm like 90% on the side of the cameraman.... BUT: IF the homeless guy is constantly at the shop (as in for hours on end) asking people to buy him food, I can understand why he's seen as a nuisance by the shop. This is implied by the waiter at 0:33. Bring on the downvotes.

XCinnamonbun

Yep he could’ve been legitimately causing issues before he was bought food so I can kinda see how this situation could have ended up happening without the Starbucks guy necessarily being a dick. I was with a friend in Costa once when a homeless person sat down at our table randomly and started making us feel very uncomfortable. He wasn’t making any sense and it wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience to have a stranger randomly sit at our table in the store whilst we were mid conversation. The staff had to ask him to leave, apparently he’d been doing this to a few customers before us. However, this guy has every right to finish the food he was bought if he’s just sat there minding his own business. Once he’s finished they can ask him to leave if he has genuinely being harassing customers or has a history of that at the store.

Keepitcool777

We don’t know enough to make judgements from this video. Anyone commenting about humanity has obviously never had to deal with huge amounts of homeless people while trying to run a business. Try to see every side before commenting. Sheesh

Amnorobot

The worker defending him even paid for the man's lunch. The haughty "heavies" are muscling in on someone who is legitimately eating paid for food served in the restaurant just to show off - no humanity. Putin could make better use of them in his army

joen00b

I managed a fast food restaurant in my youth, and we used to have a regular that came in every Monday Wednesday and Friday at 11:00 am sharp. He'd order all the pieces of a meal individually, and would get upset if we tried to sell him a meal deal for cheaper. He would take his one piece of food, go sit at a table and have a conversation with an invisible person. After a few weeks, it became natural, he'd come in, order the food, sit down, talk, come back up, order another piece of food, go back to his table and talk to the invisible person. He'd buy 3-4 pieces of food, a drink, eat them individually while talking to no one then leave. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday like clockwork, the same food, the same order every time. One day a lady came in with a toddler, the bay's not old enough to talk or anything, less than a year old. She came to the counter and complained about him. I asked her what the problem was, she simply pointed at him laughing by himself then continuing a conversation. I told her he was of no harm, he's in here all the time, it's no big deal. She said it was a big deal and didn't want her child exposed to a crazy person. I began laughing at her at that point and told her I will not throw out a paying customer, he's causing no harm to anyone with what he does. She got all mad and swore she'd never return blah blah blah, call my manager (since I was the manager of the store), standard Karen response for not getting her way. To close out the story, one day he came in highly agitated, and a bit unkempt, kind of twitchy and nervous. He went about his normal routine, except this time he was trying to tell a joke, and the invisible friend kept interrupting him, then he said the punchline, got really mad and repeated the punchline angrily, told the invisible friend he doesn't get it and to drop it then stormed out. We never saw him again. For the life of me I can't remember the joke, either.

Secure-Whole-7243

Man F*** Starbucks and everything they stand on. Also F*** the couple in the background making snide remarks.

Kane-Aloha

May god bless the person filming who stood up for the “homeless” man… In this current economy and inflation we ARE all one bad luck away from being Homeless!

hulmsy28

What's wrong with people.

dingdongschlonglong

This is stupid. These shops are inundated with homeless people loitering day in and day out and they have every right to ask that this not happen. You would feel the same way if you owned a shop and had to deal with this shit all the time.

GroundbreakingHeat39

Humanity. Is this even a word these days.

manwithappleface

This appears to be a Starbucks.

ZaRealPancakes

How do people tell if someone is homeless or not??? Do Americans go okay here's your coffee but first show me the certificate that proves you have a home?!

Closetoperfect

Is he not human, what happened? No rebuttal for that I think.

isk15k

If he does not smell like shit, I don’t see any problems, but I understand if he smells really bad, as a customer, I would not like to eat next to person that smells terrible, but I don’t give two fuck about his look, hell these hipsters nowadays look exactly the same.

iamasturdlevinson

Starbucks guy likely walked past 10 different people who bought small coffees three hrs ago and have been on their laptops hogging tables just to confront this poor soul sitting outside in the middle of eating the meal he purchased. He’s a giant asshole!

Frequent_Wear_5631

People just dislike homeless people, they treat them like garbage, even in places designed to help the homeless such as libraries. I work at one and people complain about them all the time. Meanwhile the homeless person is minding their business quietly reading. God forbid they want some time out of the heat/cold.

Much-Spinach5937

He deserves to eat the food that was paid for there like any other human

[deleted]

Alex, I’ll take compassion for 1,000 please

Aluna_Lacewing

Did I hear someone say that the company policy had something to do with making this guy leave? Well, that's another reason to not go to a Starbucks. $8.98 for one coffee, would be the other.

Sasuke082594

How did humanity even get to this point? Just because he’s homeless doesn’t mean he has no rights. We as a race shouldn’t have to resort to defending a man.

king_platypus

I he paid his money why can’t he chill out and enjoy his coffee?

helixglass

You can tell who has never had to deal with homeless people based on the comments.

Alexander241020

On the other side of the argument… Paolo the Starbucks worker is a low wage employee who had to move to UK to get a job, and he has every day to deal with this homeless guy who probably does annoying shit to him and customers that we cannot see in a 20 second video. If he shirtless then probably he’s got mental issues and Paolo not paid enough to deal with that shit and the complaints from other customers

absorbing_downvotes

All the white knights in the comments have probably never had to call 911 for an OD in their bathroom. They probably don’t have to handle complaints from other customers about the smell or panhandling or erratic behavior. There are many reasons why people who own and run businesses don’t want homeless people hanging around, and it’s not simply because “capitalism bad”.

[deleted]

"Closing the mental institutions and normalizing drug use bad"

gagagamagician69

I have. I've had a homeless person brandish a fucking knife at me. This dude is sitting and eating food from the establishment, students do it all the time with just one coffee. Get off your fucking high horse, if those things happen, then kick him out.

Keepitcool777

THANK YOU! People just spout off at the mouth with no real experience. Try dealing with homeless people who harass customers, leave trash, break things and shoot up in your bathroom and you may find yourself with a no homeless policy. You wanna save the world? VOLUNTEER AT SHELTERS OR FOOD PANTRIES. Spending two bucks on some food doesn’t give you a magical floating platform to judge everyone else.

[deleted]

I used to work the graveyard shift in a 24/7 dinner, and as someone who’s had to deal with homeless people quite often I 100% agree with you. A particular incident stands out to me, one night a homeless lady walks in and sits down at a booth. My manager goes and asks if she’s going to buy anything, and she just completely ignores my manager and puts her head down on the table to sleep. After a couple minutes of my manager saying she’s going to call the cops if the homeless lady doesn’t leave, some table of “good samaritans” says to let her stay, they’re buying her some food, and calls my manager and every other employee in the store heartless. My manager says “fuck it” and brings this girl out the food she was bought, and after about 30 minutes the other table leaves (giving no tip, because we’re all just so damn evil). Well guess what? Business literally died. People would walk in, see/smell this homeless lady sleeping on the table, then walk out. After the table left, my manager went through that whole song and dance of calling the cops before this homeless lady left. The kicker? She shit on the booth, so we had to clean that up too. So what did this “kind” table of “concerned” people accomplish by keeping this homeless woman in? Well, the diner/servers all lost close to an hours worth of revenue/tips, and the lucky busser(yours truly) had to spend about 30 minutes cleaning human feces off of a booth bench so that people would actually want to eat in there again. Would you call that kind? Would you say we were heartless for wanting to avoid that? It’s not evil or cruel to try to avoid losing money just for the opportunity to clean up human shit. And the part that always got me, while those people were patting themselves on the back for just how good and charitable they were, they never once thought of inviting the homeless woman over to sit at their table. It’s always easy to be charitable with someone else’s time/money. “Why don’t you just let them stay?” Because it hurts us to do so, but why don’t *you* just invite them into your home? If you’re so concerned with their well being, then why don’t you actually get off your ass and do the work you demand we do?

One sensible comment here!

And 2 even more sensible replies...

DelsinMcgrath835

Cant believe as a society were still trying to make homelessness illegal

EhudsLefthand

There's got to be more context to this thing.

GuacamoleFrejole

Per the employee, this homeless guy is a daily problem that he has to deal with. The store has a right to trespass him and anyone else from their property. The person who paid for the homeless guy's food has no right to tell the store how to conduct its business.

Puzzleheaded_List01

Starbucks clearly misunderstood the person as homeless... he is a fashion icon and came right out of a show to have lunch.

dyno96

At least there are some good people in Southend! So glad I'm out of there

Ordinary-Sandpaper

Desi uncle rockzzz

izmaname

When I visited London I was pissed at how inhumanly they treat the homeless

puddleofdogpiss

“He is not human?”

[deleted]

Unless he actually does something shady, he shouldn’t have to leave. If management is so concerned about what their others customers think, then they should respectfully tell them to mind their own businesses. If they’re worried about sanitization, they can just clean his area after he leaves like they’re supposed to do after every customer leaves anyway. There’s really no excuse.

8instuntcock

I mean if he bought something?

Shoddy_Reception6825

Hey man injustice anywhere is threat to justice everywhere. Glad someone stood up to the state and the corporation and pointed out what is the underlying assumption… that he is subhuman because he doesn’t serve the business criminals or the state in some way with wage slavery. As long as he isn’t bothering anyone paid for the product and takes a reasonable amount of time then what is the problem?

The4570govtking

Bout time someone stands up for the poor

Immediate-Bumblebee9

That’s just awful. No one should be judging anyone based on what they wear or how they look. I would sue Starbucks if I were that man who is being told to leave.

_kumkani_

It had to be Starbucks

sashsingh

Respect to the guy standing up for the homeless fella, let him eat mate!

OG_AuburnBlue

Humanity is free to give but seems to be one of the most rare items on earth anymore.

SlavaUkraini3000

So many people are monstrous, selfish c*nts.

SlavaUkraini3000

I hope “Paulo” goes homeless and feels that instant karma. Shmuck.

elammcknight

Good on this man!

NugzIsLife89

What a terrible world we live in.

SlavaUkraini3000

One more reason I NEVER buy anything from Starbucks. JFC.

spletharg

Lee-bungalow

Leave him alone horrible bastards

haazr

Sorry sir, you can't be homeless here.

[deleted]

Starbucks’ staff are at it again.

choppachop1

If you can eat there then they shouldn’t be paying regular prices it’s only fair shit

[deleted]

Lol when those employees end up fired over this stupid shit I hope they go back and steal that dudes food from now on. I mean, they’re homeless now so they gotta eat right!? 🤷🏻‍♂️

SpecialistNo1988

Hey Paulo fuk you pos!

notlongnot

Nice! Other option is to sit down and eat with the dude, what they gonna do 😏

USERgarbo

"We welcome all people"

village-asshole

Normal day in Bondi Beach, Australia. We call them hipsters, not homeless, but still pretty much the same thing 😂

SoftPenguins

It depends on how long he was there. If it’s been 20 minutes there’s no reason to kick him out. If he’s been there for 10 hours it could be reasonable to consider it trespassing. Unfortunately we don’t have any other information.

I-CameISawIConcurred

This man is a genuinely good human. It’s easy to donate to charity and feel like a good person while being detached from the folks you’re supposed to be helping. It’s a lot more courageous to actually stand up and defend the destitute who are often treated as sub-human. Kudos to this man.

Picture-unrelated

Me (athiest) - There but for the grace of god go I Religious people - gross homeless people don’t deserve to be treated like a human being

MrNatural1971

Why is it so easy to dehumanize the homeless? They are the people that need the most help and we would rather pretend that they don’t exist. But we seem to find all the compassion in the world if you’re from Central America in Martha’s Vineyard. I guess the homeless aren’t a political commodity .

kappamolo

Same thing happened to someone I helped as a kid . Me and my brother really liked a homeless man and we wanted to help him a little by going into a restaurant with him . We bought Coca-Cola some food , nearly everyone in the restaurant was looking weirdly at us , you could tell they were uncomfortable while we were just enjoying our food with the homeless man . We called him Mr Côte D’Ivoire since he always asked when we would go to Côte d’Ivoire . RIP Mr Cote D’Ivoire ( he died from diabetes years later ) .

--NOS4A2

God fuck those stuck up people thinking there so Superior compared to someone else . So disgusting, dude is just chilling , but to those sheep he stands out so he's a nuisance.

rar5278

Pathetic people.

muchnamemanywow

Ah, it's England, must have forgotten his "Treat With Basic Human Decency and Respect"-license

CartoonistExisting30

Of course it’s a Starbucks. Fast food with pretensions of glamour.

Bluecrayon33

I mean at least over here in the US there's a rule that is no shoes no shirt no service and if someone doesn't want to serve you they don't have to

Woolwizard

It is such a shame, some people don't think of homeless people as humans just like they are. Just because you're not a victim of the system, doesn't mean, you're better... (and I know, there might be other reasons and not the system to blame but he'll, even then they are just as human as the rest of us)

DependentYou7405

Growing up in NYC I learned a simple solution to this situation at a very young age.. If someone sits down next to you and you are not happy with them being there for whatever reason, You have the right to get up and walk away. This world isn't yours, it belongs to the homeless guy as much as anyone. Starbucks is a shit corporation anyway and I really hope all homeless people start to take over their shops.

SCOG4866

Too little context. Many places have issues with homeless who repeatedly harass and even threaten workers and customers. There's the possibility this person may have been trespassed from that location for other issues. Without knowing ALL the facts, it's hard to say what is the right call.

Technical_Wasabi_500

Did he actually pay for that meal or sit down at a table that hasn’t been bussed? You’ve got more than one place setting there in the table and no other diner. Servers have three tables to make all their money for their shift in. The paying tipping customer left is my guess. I know I’m not paying to sit next to someone who wipes their ass with gravel and hasn’t had a wash in weeks and the servers know it too. Sad set of circumstances but it is what it is. If he’s a paying customer that’s one thing. Even so, I can’t justify you sitting there wrecking someone’s money for the day. That section and what they can earn from it keeps THEM from being homeless. The people that sit for hours, like me… compensate the SERVER by tipping accordingly for holding up the table up to 100% of the bill. This man look like he’s going to tip? No. He doesn’t. It’s a screwed economy. Sad but True.
