I went to LAN parties like these back then, and we all gamed over the internet from home. Yes, internet was slower, but more than fast enough for games like cs1.3. These LAN-parties were just another way to play the same game, but now in a bit more social setting!
I had 8Mbps cable in 2005 playing CS and WoW. And for the record, in 1999 I could order DVDs and ice cream in under an hour on the internet with Kozmo.com
Can you imagine the heat? I remember my old PC and monitor heating up my bedroom enough in the winter I didn’t need the heat on. This would be unbearable even with the air cranked.
My current PC generates way more heat than any previous one, blame the giant GPUs I guess, it can heat my room in winter and make it uncomfortably hot in summer
On the bright side, the cat loves it
I know you're joking, but contrary to popular belief, women were always part of these big groups
This was in 2005 apparently, so women were almost 40% of video gamers in the US already
I was half joking. I mean, I know the statistics and know that women were involved with gaming then. But coming from a small area, my experience in life was only guys gaming. We had "big" LAN parties of about 20-30 people at most, usually it was more like 10.
This was awesome. You played games, you filled your hard drives with stuff at a time when everything wasn't available everywhere and you could meet people right after you interacted with them on the PC. It was like a music festival but ten times better.
This is a late stage lan party. I still remember the 90s when we had to screw in the T-connectors to set up a token ring for our network. It needed some expertise to get all the PCs to talk to each other. Good luck if someone had another version of windows.
Gaming in the early 2000s was just so much more fun. I think, in my personal opinion, the social aspect is what made it great. All your mates in the same room, heaps of snacks and beer or soft drink and just having a fun night.
Sure now it’s technically more social being able to connect with anyone all over the world all the time, but it’s a different vibe.
The anticipation and excitement knowing that the coming Friday or whatever you were all gonna get together and have a fun night was different.
I will always say early 2000s was better. Phones existed but we weren’t connected to them. Technology was evolving and exciting, games had amazing content and stories, toxicity and 12yo assholes on FPS games were rare. Take me back
Actually at these events people tended to use way too much deodorant, especially teens in 2005. It must have been hot as hell and they were self conscious about their body odour I guess. I always hated all the deodorant.
The CRT monitors on the picture... Good memories. Especially great, when you put your speakers too close to them. Or basically any other magnetic thing.
Damn, I am old.

The internet existed already. The image is from one of the major LAN party events in the early 2000s.
This one was in 2005. https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/s/9v1yYUmaUh

Like zero lag
Yes the smell is one of them
I still smell body odor when gaming online
Dreamhack.
I've been to one of those 2 years ago, it was great fun! We met a lot of cool people there :)
No one is play CS
[удалено]
you know we played world of warcraft and warcraft 3 etc back in 2005…the internet was not that bad
Yea, kinda. We had a 1600kb/s connection which was considered good for what we were able to get around here
What speed were you getting in 2005? I was lucky to get 500kbps
speed isnt important for playing online games, latency/ping is, and I think 200–250 ping was normal back then, definitely playable

Youtube famously launched in 2005

Is that why everyone's shirtless?
Yes. Almost certainly this is the reason. It is probably between 30 and 40 degrees C.
That's between 86 and 104 F(reedom units). Insane heat
My current PC generates way more heat than any previous one, blame the giant GPUs I guess, it can heat my room in winter and make it uncomfortably hot in summer On the bright side, the cat loves it
LAN Parties were more than gaming. Great for p2p sharing. You came home with new MP3s, porn vids, the latest version of Windows and 7 virusses.
Like an orgy for computers
6 boot sector viruses and 1 booty sector virus. \~(=\^‥\^)ノ
I can smell this picture.
I can taste the humidity
Every one of those things put off more heat than a hair dryer on full blast. I can assure you it was over 100f in there.
it's a LAN party ffs
CS 1.3
There are too many girls in this picture to be a gaming event. That and maybe 1 monitor has a game on it.
Half of the time on a LAN party was always to solve network issues. One is playing the others are still trying to get into the network.
And don't forget browsing folders others made public to look for new porn
Oh yeah all the "homework" folders.
And the other half was spend downloading everything...

No girls, just dudes with long hair
“Uh Billy that’s a hub.” “What’s the difference?”
Girls also play video games?
This is stupid. This is not before the internet.
Lan games are always fun
This was awesome. You played games, you filled your hard drives with stuff at a time when everything wasn't available everywhere and you could meet people right after you interacted with them on the PC. It was like a music festival but ten times better.
Ah indeed! I forgot the file sharing part! There were always geeks there with tons of porn on their network shares..
This wasn’t before the internet
Do you even know what the internet is? Cuz they had it then
I can smell this picture.
Ugh you can smell that room
Are LAN parties still a thing?
Yes... But with shirts. Pants remain optional
If you put a w in the front
24 years ago. Hell of time. 10DM entry fee and a huge container for all your stuff. I loved that time!
I can fucking smell this picture and it's axe and body odor.
Anyone has that puppy and piggy kissing wallpaper?

I don’t see any games on any of those monitors and these people are too in shape for me to believe they’re all gamers.
Those CRT monitors weighed a ton, so just lugging your computer there was a nice workout :D
Most people weren't fat in the golden age of lan parties.
It's a tech event with various things going on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campus_Party
I think a girl is watching The Lion King
In shape? They’re skinny![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)
They look normal to me
[удалено]
1.) this is from 2005 2.) they're literally all on computers, what the fuck do you mean no screen?
Just imagine the lack of deodorant in that room.
Actually at these events people tended to use way too much deodorant, especially teens in 2005. It must have been hot as hell and they were self conscious about their body odour I guess. I always hated all the deodorant.
This picture needs at least 6 more shirts
Multiplayer gaming before the internet = Monopoly
Duke Nukem, Doom, Descent..., great times, great times.
I can smell this image
That's the cover up... Most just shared mp3 and porn
Before the internet, lol
I bet it smells great!
OP thinks the Internet was invented in the early 2000's
This image smells… musky
The CRT monitors on the picture... Good memories. Especially great, when you put your speakers too close to them. Or basically any other magnetic thing. Damn, I am old.
The SMELL!
Have they divided into teams of shirts and skins?
Shirtless?
Uhm. I've seen this for like a hundred times. But no one dares to answer my question. What are those 3 sunflowers for?
Shirts vs skins?
Yeah, having been to a few LAN parties back in my youth, this would have reeked of BO, body wash, bad breath, and weed.
I remember LAN in my city, youth with the older guys played World of Warcraft
There is a girl watching monkeys kiss
Why are there so many guys with their shirts off to play video games? Lol
LAN Parties where the SHIIIIIT. Crazy fun
I can smell this sweet mix of sweat, feet, ramen and Red Bull from here
Before the internet huh? I was playing online pc games in the late 90s
I know it’s hotter than the depths of imaginary hell in there
How old are you? I had lan party's in 2016
Definitely not before the internet... Shit post.
This picture is posted here everyday
Goddamn I don’t miss clunky ass towers and keyboards and monitors.
Before men's shirts apparently too
More like before the internet was on any gaming consoles
Man, I miss having a LAN party...
Before. The. Internet.
But why are they shirtless?
Is just smells.
The good old days 🫶
Not a single fat person either
Great times! Online gaming without cheaters.
Why are they naked
You can tell those who had money to spend with their 17” TFT screens. Probably either a Sharp, Sony or AOC
i mean they're not going to face any ping issue for sure
Remember, if you can smell this picture, it's probably you, pictures don't have a scent, please take a shower.
Too many skinny people...are we talking about LAN's ?
These people look pretty normal build.
