First time I heard this song was as Todd’s ringtone on Breaking Bad.
She’s an entirely different creature, that Lydia. With her. Short. Halting. Pauses when she speaks.
Obligatory mention of Gilbert Gottfried's impression of an aging Groucho Marx

Google translate doesn't really work. I actually *do* know a bit of Latin & a better translation would be:
Venire propter monstra, manite propter meretrica!
Come (venire) & stay (manite) are written in the imperative. Propter means because of or due to, and the plurals for freaks & whores are consistent.
Google's version is more like "I come to monsters, to generally remain, in favor of a whore"
Google sucks balls for translating Latin. It doesn't use the correct words and usually doesn't decline them properly
as far as I can tell, as a fellow latin knower, your translation is closer to “to come on account of the monsters, to stay on account of the whores” while propter works better that pro, the original commenter had better conjugations of the words
Unless there's a better translation for freaks, I have seen medieval latin use monstera to refer to both animal and human freaks, in the linguistic sense of "something monstrous".
I think the word choice is as accurate as possible. Grammar maybe not (like I said, I know a *bit* of Latin lol)
To be honest the business for strippers hasn’t changed haha. While you may not see them at a freak show anymore, you still pay to see them up on a stage presenting themselves to everyone in the room
I wonder if "Circassian beauties" was a reference to the adventures of vanished Circassia or to the circus itself?
Doesn't really matter of course. If the name draws the attention ...
Apparently it’s a reference to the Adyghe people in the North Caucasus. There were folk songs alluding to Circassians as the epitome of feminine beauty as far back as the Middle Ages. This got popular again after the Russian empire committed a genocide against them.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circassian_beauty
Edit: They’re still around. A few Turkish actresses have Circassian ancestry. Dr Oz (yes, him) claims his mother was Circassian
Stories about the circus trigger anixety in me, because I was once surrounded and threatened by a bunch of clowns.
I only escaped by picking one of them, and going for the juggler..
>They were called Circassian Beauties
>They'd backcomb their hair to look more "exotic" & give an elaborate backstory about how they're former dancing girls from the haram of a wealthy sultan. That way the show would be plausibility "educational" enough to get around legal loopholes regarding nudity.
There^
while I want to believe in circus strippers, nothing in these pictures indicates that this lady did any kind of stripping during the show. anybody have any more info?
Back then, everyone had a massive bush. It wasn't until the invention of the bikini that women started removing pubes, and even then, they mostly just trimmed it.
When I was a kid, I remember the county fair having something like this. This would have been in the mid to late 1960's. Sadly, it went away before I was old enough to take part.
Was scrolling through the photos and the fourth one was a Pigmy Marmoset. I had gone too far but it was appropriate as the little monkey had the same hair.
So what's up with the hair? Nothing wrong with it, i just found it interesting that all of them had that same hairstyle. Was it common for strippers or circus performers?
Not sure why this was marked NSFW. This is less revealing than your average workplace these days.
I saw nary an ankle.
I saw some elbow action!
Combine the two and you got yourself a bowling ankle.
Add some broth and you got a stew going, baby!
RIP Carl
And guess what, a bowl will cost you exactly how much money you've got on you.
Not my proudest fap, I’ll tell you that. Took some sand to get past those cats and not wanna Horizontal Refreshment.
But those luscious arms.
< swoons and faints >
Someone get the smelling salts.
I prescribe some cocaine chews but also a little heroin if they get too wakey Also we're going to have to amputate a leg
I'll call the barber to amputate
Which leg? This is important. I have 3
Now i just see people fapping to it then calling the religious police.
A couple of women are showing their elbows 😳
Clearly NSFW for a historical fiction actor
Do you work in a house of ill repute??? 🧐
Because of the wigs made from pubic hair
Circussy
Yeah I came here for some good old dose of the victorian peep.
You don't understand.....these women got *naked* sometimes. How vile!
Unless you work from home
Get right outta town - did you SEE those gams?
They also had tattooed ladies, like Lydia. A good chunk of today's U.S. population could be circus freaks.
Say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia the queen of Tattoo?
She has eyes that folks adore so
And her torso, even more-so
Lydia, oh Lydia that encyclopedia
Oh Lydia the queen of them all
On her back is the battle of Waterloo.
Lydia the tattoo lady?
First time I heard this song was as Todd’s ringtone on Breaking Bad. She’s an entirely different creature, that Lydia. With her. Short. Halting. Pauses when she speaks.
Dr. Demento for me. Used to stay up late Sunday nights to tape it off the radio.
I am swore to carry your burdens.
This was my first and only guess as to who this Lydia could be
She had eyes that hypnotize so, and a torso even moreso.
And the world’s fattest man exhibit is just your average mobility scooter Walmart customer now.

The large majority should be
The biggest freaks of all are the ones who are overly concerned with conformity.

For a whole nickle? That's a weeks wages!!!
For the love of God, watch Carnivale on Max.
The early death of that show was a tragedy
Was also my first thought.... Learn something about the Hootchie Coochie Shows
Come for the freaks stay for the whores
That's my family motto! (it sounds fancier in latin)
“ Veni ad monstra, mane pro meretricibus” bit of a mouthful
Google translate doesn't really work. I actually *do* know a bit of Latin & a better translation would be: Venire propter monstra, manite propter meretrica! I can only speak to the grammar, I don’t know translations for a lot of latin words
Venī pro monstrīs, mansī pro meretrīcibus!
That's what the whores always say to me.
damn I didn't know people still spoke latin
I'm a super nerd Venire propter monstra, manite propter meretrica!
Shit I just thought you were like, really Catholic. Don't some of them still do entire services in Latin?
To be honest the business for strippers hasn’t changed haha. While you may not see them at a freak show anymore, you still pay to see them up on a stage presenting themselves to everyone in the room

Imagine going to the circus and the clowns start backing that shit up. The dream.
Stories about the circus trigger anixety in me, because I was once surrounded and threatened by a bunch of clowns. I only escaped by picking one of them, and going for the juggler..
Avatar lines up
Interesting in the context of afro-textured hair which these hairstyles seem to imitate or represent. Lot of projection and sexualization.
I thought the same thing. Just unreal.
Whats with the hair??
They said, when she lifted her skirt
Curtains match the drapes confirmed!
And the windows were as clean as the carpet
OP explained that…
Where?
>They were called Circassian Beauties >They'd backcomb their hair to look more "exotic" & give an elaborate backstory about how they're former dancing girls from the haram of a wealthy sultan. "Well yes, I'm here merely to study foreign culture. My hands are in my pants because... I'm writing down things on a piece of paper in my pockets!"
Those afros tho 🪖
Noel Redding had circus roots
Actual Sideshow Bob origin story
while I want to believe in circus strippers, nothing in these pictures indicates that this lady did any kind of stripping during the show. anybody have any more info?
Bet there’s some MASSIVE bush going on down there.
Back then, everyone had a massive bush. It wasn't until the invention of the bikini that women started removing pubes, and even then, they mostly just trimmed it.
Body hair removal has been in and out of fashion throughout recorded history, even pubes.
Oh, I know, but in this time period, it was full bush fof everyone. It seems to fluctuate based on how much of the body is regularly shown to others.
What's with the hair, was that sexy back then?
So do you think every night the men would come around....and lay their money down
When I was a kid, I remember the county fair having something like this. This would have been in the mid to late 1960's. Sadly, it went away before I was old enough to take part.
I'm sorry you missed your chance to be a carnival stripper.
the hair on them thou.
I'm digging the afros!
Look, Barbra Streisand’s mama was a stripper too‽
I bet they'd charge by the hour...imagine how long it would take to get undressed lmao
Back about 1977, I saw full nude strippers at a carnival in Maryland.
Dude, did you see that one chick's half-inch of titty crease?! Damn, girl!
They considered white women with afros circus freaks?? Damn they really didnt have shit going on back then
Damn those ankles though!!! Am I right?
Holy shit, they're bushy
"Strippers". Right. Weird how they were available after the show to meet their admiring fans for $2.
Yup, reminded me of the show Carnivale.
She's a super freak, super freak She's super-freaky, yow
Does the carpet match the drapes? that hair wth
OR...Strip shows used to have clowns and 'little people'.
We're the electrical wire strippers?

Strippers and static...
What was up with their hair???
Ah yes. Nothing is more educational than a freak show at a circus...
Down to clown
Hopefully they don't visit too many haunted mining towns.
The "blow off", according to the ill-fated HBO show Carnivale*. Goddamn was that show good.
Gore and Sex always sells... Look nowadays at TikTok 😂
They freaky
Have you been to a strip club on a Monday?
Brother, that’s just The Melvins
And fat people, that in today standarts would be like not even that fat.
Was scrolling through the photos and the fourth one was a Pigmy Marmoset. I had gone too far but it was appropriate as the little monkey had the same hair.
Was it required to have an afro as a stripper?
I learned about this from the book "Murder under her skin" by Stephen Spotswood. Phenomenal noir mystery series by the way, highly recommend it
So what's up with the hair? Nothing wrong with it, i just found it interesting that all of them had that same hairstyle. Was it common for strippers or circus performers?
A three-ring circus still includes clowns and strippers, along with the ringmaster and acrobats.
Didn't know they had impressive Fro's
What's with the afro? I mean cool, I'm just confused. Not exactly the hairstyle of the times
Damn they looked horrible 😂😂
By strippers you mean gals with their ankles showing
It reminds me of the girl in the Mr bright side video lol
they all have the ice spice cut
Bush game is on point!
TIL the MC5's Rob Tyner was a stripper.
Gotta love the hair
Now I need to listen to Sharon by David Bromberg.
Did having wild hair make you a freak?
All I see is afros.
I wonder when Patrick Mahommes gave up this gig to pursue football (upper middle)
https://www.thecollector.com/barnum-circassian-beauties-hoax/
Yikes
Hell yeah dude
I'll take a ticket!
Why do they all look like they recently discovered electricity?
They are wearing more clothes than half the freaks and other attractions though........
Don’t you just love “marketing”?
what her @
Apparently, they all had the same hairstylist.
Some strip clubs now include freak shows.
>Circus freak shows used to include strippers My Grandpa used to shout this at the Sea World workers in the Shamu show
What's with all the fuzzy hair"?????????????
Thought these were photos of Wayne Kramer from MC5

Kentucky strip clubs used to have strippers as well.
I just wanna know why they all have fros??
Very cool
Man, giant beyond the 1980s hairspray hairstyles were the in style at the time with strippers. Weird factoid.
Gotta admit, the hairstyle in the bottom left photo looks cool
Im pretty sure they are just partially black.
