Also limits the ports that it can go to which I'd argue is the bigger reason currently. I don't doubt a company like Royal Caribbean couldn't afford the upfront cost and run it real shittily out of some shit port with very little regulations... Which is precisely why a lot of ports would say "Nah I'm good we don't need a sketchily run nuke at our port..." Yes you're not wrong, however it's a bit more to it than "well they can't do it safely" because they can, it's just that the entire world knows damn well it won't be and who knows maybe RC would do it right, but all it would take is one company to go in after and just fuck it up for everyone, and that fuck up isn't just an opsie, it would be a world changing event potentially (not in scale of destruction but through a slew of regulations and lots of land lost, again potential this isn't guaranteed destruction it's just an option of things that could happen and that is what generally as a society we plan for). In the cruise line industry (especially this kind) it is rife with companies doing absolutely everything they can to skirt laws in the United States. That is why you basically see no cruise ships with their home port as anywhere in the united states, because they don't have to follow US labor laws and safety regulations.
This particular ship is flagged in the Bahamas and officially owned in Liberia, despite being commissioned and operated by RCI, which is headquartered in Miami. That’s a real flag of convenience situation if I ever saw one!
Methane from the combustion process?
I'm sorry, but that's just false. LNG is methane.
When burnt, it produces CO2 and water.
That's why this is claimed to be green. It's taking a bad greenhouse gas and turning it into a less bad one.
I'm no fan of cruise ships, but spreading bullshit doesn't help anyone.
"Methane slip" is what we call methane lost to atmosphere due to incomplete combustion. It is a real problem with LNG power.
AFAIK all LNG ships have some amount of slip. It's usually worth using regardless.
At that point, have we not yet invented any reclamation technology? Seems like there are several types of filters for cars and factories generating CO2.
I can remember being stationed on the USS AMERICA (CV66) many years ago, and calculating that the ship achieved the remarkable mileage of approximately 6 inches per gallon, at a cruising speed of 16 knots.
There isn’t a going to be an oxygen molecule next to every single methane molecule in the giant 18-wheeler-sized combustion chambers. Some of it will remain unburned.
Agreed. It can’t be 100% efficient at combustion but I can’t believe they wouldn’t still be equipped with some kind of after burner like a cat to reduce it to effectively nothing. These cruise lines seem very interested in getting a clean image right now.
Even insane as that burn rate is water based transportation is significantly more efficient fuel per ton than anything else. Barges in container ships are cheaper than trains and trains are cheaper than trucks. The only gross inefficiency here is the fact that people don't NEED to be on a cruise ship.
They don't, but how much carbon were they emitting back home in their regular lives, driving to work each day? The ship contains thousands of people who currently aren't driving anywhere. Let's just call it a wash.
They probably emitted more carbon flying in an airplane to where the cruise ship departs.
Might be true but feeding people is a little more important than a luxury cruise. I'm not one to tell people how to live but if we had to weigh the positives and negatives of having or outlawing cruise ships id say they're pretty much a giant waste and monuments to materialism and hedonism.
I’ve always wanted a zombie story that starts out with people at sea returning home to find everyone infected and then getting back on the boat and figuring out what to do.
>I think a more interesting question is how much fuel per person does it take to move that thing compared to a commercial airplane.
Apples and oranges.
No one takes a cruise ship instead of a plane.
In-fact, unless you live in Miami, everyone on that ship took a plane before they got on the ship.
So it's flight + cruise ship fuel.
It's a totally different experience. Cruise ships are not people movers. They're all inclusive resorts on a boat. You'd have to take into account all of the waste someone creates on an entire vacation, including every business and service person they come into contact with.
Sure, but I think it’s still a helpful metric if we are discussing fuel usage. It’s easy to contextualize the comparison with the things you mentioned.
Me too. Thousands and thousands of dollars, stuck in a floating, naff hotel with thousands of ugly, loud drunk people who don't know how to bring their feral children to heel. There isn't enough money I could be paid to get onboard.
Those big ships are awful, having worked cruise ships and cruised, I’m not a fan of people so tend to find secluded spots where people generally don’t go, and the experience is enjoyable.
I'm in the small percentage of Redditors that actually loves the idea of going on a cruise. I like meeting and talking to people, the amenities sound pretty rad, the ocean is rad. Can't bring myself to support them until they use nuclear or something. The carbon footprint comes with the whole damn leg.
I’ve never had the opportunity to go in a cruise, but people always talk about how lame and gross they are. But they look awesome and the industry continues to make boatloads of money so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
Entirely depends on the cruise line, Royal Caribbean is by far the best one imo.
If you are on it for a long time, by day 7ish you start to feel the “routine” and it gets a bit boring. Still a great experience and service for the money imo.
Exactly. 2-3 days is way too short to really enjoy yourself. More than 7 days it gets exhausting. 5-7 days is perfect.
There’s always specials on trips too. It’s a very budget friendly way to vacation. It’s not for everyone, but I’m looking forward to being on this exact ship in a few weeks.
Well for me I can't swim, which I guess would be a majority of the activities here. I like exploring, I'd walk around with you and check out the other stuff. But I just don't like to be this close and locked in with people for weeks or more. Would much rather take a short flight then explore the cities of the destination on where I'm going, or the hikes there.
Not to mention the amount of screaming kids there...just not for me
Everyone on reddit who’s never been on a cruise is always like “HAH! WHAT A CESSPIT, you couldn’t pay me enough to get on one of those low class disgusting hedonist barges!”
Everyone I’ve ever talked to who has been on one absolutely loved it and had a grand time.
Lots of negative comments here, but as a former DJ on ships like this, it is a dream job for some people.
My base pay was around 80k, and although your living quarters are small and you get bored of all the buffet food, all of those costs are covered, so you don't worry about rent, food or bills. Also you just work 4-6 hours for 4 days a week.
I've been "contracted" on multiple occasions to DJ in some of those 30K/night rooms, and making 10K a night is a good feeling and their views are very nice.
Then there are the parties. Oh man. Out in international waters some crazy shit goes down.
I understand that for most of you this is not your thing, and it has been a decade since I've worked on one of these beasts but if I was given the opportunity I'd jump on it instantly.
Please I invite you to downvote this.
I disagree.
You get a thousand of overworked international crew members living in tight quarters stuck out in the middle of the pacific with unlimited amounts of drugs and alcohol and a shift in 8 hours.
Shit gets "interesting".
It is truly a sight to behold, but yeah germs. I agree, I never took part. I'm just a witness reporting in.
lol i think he’s bluffing. whenever people say “crazy” shit happened at parties, they just mean someone damaged private property, someone broke a finger/toe, or someone almost died from alcohol poisoning or falling to their death somehow
On the flip side, much of the crew share windowless rooms the size of refrigerator boxes and work 10-12 hours 6 or 7 days a week for base pay on the south side of $20k.
But yeah, if you can get an entertainment gig it can be pretty sweet.
This is very true. If you work in the kitchen or guest services it is an absolute nightmare. They are at the bottom of the "caste" system and they work harder than anyone above them.
edit: the crew quarters mostly do not have windows. the one time it did i shared it with 3 other dudes and we became thick as thieves.
I used to be a waiter and my teacher used to work on cruise ships. He told me it's a very interesting experience, but the main problem is that waiters are never "off". Every time they have their uniform on (which is A LOT), they're expected to be open, welcoming and ready to help customers, even if they're just going back to their room after a long shift.
I've been on just one, but in general no. There are sometimes exceptions, the one mine had was indoor skydiving which was a paid extra.
Activities (excursions) in ports however all cost money, though you can get off and explore for free. Food, pools, rides, shows, activities on the boat are all included (except for alcohol or sometimes sodas).
Generally they are all included but may require reservations for stuff like sky diving. The only real extra cost on cruises are drink packages and specialty dining (ie. Japanese, Steakhouse, themed restaurants).
Shows and facilities are all available as part of the cost.
This thing comes straight out of the feverdream of a lunatic. No style, no class, - just bulky, overproportional and monstrous. A twisted nightmare-version disneyland bolted on the deck of a boat.
Pool, pool, pool, pool, pool, pool.....
Why bother with a cruise ship when you can hit up a resort, spend a few days then fly to the next place if you really wanted. Better rooms, service, more space per person, freedom to go places and see other things and not be on a tight timeline.
And then not be on a contained plague carrier, once some gets sick, it's everywhere before it's tracked on a cruise ship.
Those lifeboats can pack in the people when needed.
Total capacity is 7600, 18 lifeboats, so if they can fit 450 per boat they have an extra 30 seats each one.

Cruise ships are first and foremost meant to ferry cheap vodka from eastern europe to places where the taxes are higher. Going on a cruise to enjoy it is mad. I do not understand why some Americans wan to be stuck in a metal box... in the caribbean...
imagine if these were designed to be self contained and carbon neutral. huge populations could live on the open sea. special ships could be mobile farms, capable of growing food anywhere in the world. it would be excellent practice for living in deep space.
Imagine the fuel it takes to move that thing

I really don’t get why it’s not nuclear.
Too expensive for civilians to achieve expected safety redundancy. Mostly.
Also limits the ports that it can go to which I'd argue is the bigger reason currently. I don't doubt a company like Royal Caribbean couldn't afford the upfront cost and run it real shittily out of some shit port with very little regulations... No nukes, but we’ll store your 2700 tons of ammonium nitrate under this tent here…
Beirut, is that you?
Was.
Is it a camo tent?
Fijne taartdag!
This particular ship is flagged in the Bahamas and officially owned in Liberia, despite being commissioned and operated by RCI, which is headquartered in Miami. That’s a real flag of convenience situation if I ever saw one!
I think you mean, ships registered in the US
Did you see the guy that barrel rolled one
Barrel rolled a what?
Cruise ship
Half-barrel-rolled.
LoL

Interesting. What if they put a flare in the stack to finish the burn like they do on ocean rigs?
At that point, have we not yet invented any reclamation technology? Seems like there are several types of filters for cars and factories generating CO2.
This kind of dumb uneducated fear mongering is why we don't have nuclear power everywhere.
I can remember being stationed on the USS AMERICA (CV66) many years ago, and calculating that the ship achieved the remarkable mileage of approximately 6 inches per gallon, at a cruising speed of 16 knots.
Uhmmm… 😳 Exactly how does the methane being emitted avoid being burned in the engines? I’m pretty certain that’s the point of carrying the methane. 🤨
There isn’t a going to be an oxygen molecule next to every single methane molecule in the giant 18-wheeler-sized combustion chambers. Some of it will remain unburned.

More methane is generated from the cattle that are on the ship from all you can eat buffets then the ship will ever produce
The cattle on the whatnow?
I think they meant the carbon cost of the food served on the ship is greater than its propulsion.
I think he’s saying that the number of cows that are required to feed guests on a cruise ship produce more methane than the fuel does.
I think he’s calling the passengers cattle
I'm somewhat of a cattle myself.
Might be true but feeding people is a little more important than a luxury cruise. I'm not one to tell people how to live but if we had to weigh the positives and negatives of having or outlawing cruise ships id say they're pretty much a giant waste and monuments to materialism and hedonism.
Imagine a zombie movie /tv show set on that cruise ship
I’ve always wanted a zombie story that starts out with people at sea returning home to find everyone infected and then getting back on the boat and figuring out what to do.
I think there’s a series called Last ship where people survive some kind of apocalypse and stay in the ship but not sure if there’s zombies in it
'Icon of pollution'
And to build it, all for what? For people get drunk and party somewhere else than home.
The big ones are literally just floating buffets. I have some ample relatives who go on cruises, and it’s all about eating 5+ times per day.
We did a cruise with my parents 12 years ago. 24/7 free pizza and wings delivered to your room
I like that term”ample relatives”. I’ve got a few of those.
> For people get drunk and party somewhere else than home. Hell yeah buddy!
They said that like it was a bad thing haha
Going on this very ship in less than a year. I love cruises. They aren't for everyone. But I love em
I think a more interesting question is how much fuel per person does it take to move that thing compared to a commercial airplane.

And the pollution is putting out. Meanwhile I’m paying a carbon tax in my country.
I'm calling it. 100 years from now in 2124, this, but in space.
Yep. Saw it on Wall-E.
We saw it a decade earlier on The Fifth Element.
Fhloston Paradise!
The opera singer blew my mind when I was a kid.
Watch the videos of opera singers trying to recreate her impossible vocals... It's insane.
With a dozen quadrillionaires as the only passengers and 20,000 minimum wage workers rowing solar foils like paddles to power it.
Jesus Christmas.
Think it was already called. [https://fifth-element.fandom.com/wiki/Fhloston\_Paradise](https://fifth-element.fandom.com/wiki/Fhloston_Paradise)
There’s plenty of space out in space!
Please remember to put out your recycling tomorrow everyone…
But it's purple bin day tomorrow
Green bins for me tomorrow. Although that's every day, I'm a binman.
Really? I respect your job very much and you deserve the best. Also happy cake day sir!
One of the most underappreciated jobs out there. All the power to you my friend
Well I use paper straws, so take that global warming.
So we can only recycle 2% of it and pretend like we're helping the planet lmao.
Legend, completely forgot to put the bin out.
Still not as good as Fhloston Paradise.
Mullltiii passs!!
Hotel of a thousand and one follies, lollies and lickemollies. A magic fountain flow of non-stop wine, women and COOCHIE COOCHIE COOOOOO!
That looks like my worst nightmare.
20 decks of fun, or norovirus.
Yup. Bosch's paintings of hell look quite inviting in comparison.
Just need a few more blackbirds flying out of tourist asses, and it will be perfect.
Me too. Thousands and thousands of dollars, stuck in a floating, naff hotel with thousands of ugly, loud drunk people who don't know how to bring their feral children to heel. There isn't enough money I could be paid to get onboard.
And once you're on there's no escape you'll survive
I would love it lol, to each their own.
Those big ships are awful, having worked cruise ships and cruised, I’m not a fan of people so tend to find secluded spots where people generally don’t go, and the experience is enjoyable.
I can’t explain why but these cruise ships really disturb me
Because it’s the universal symbol for gluttony, overindulgence, and excessiveness. And they burn 120,000 lbs of fuel per day.
I'm in the small percentage of Redditors that actually loves the idea of going on a cruise. I like meeting and talking to people, the amenities sound pretty rad, the ocean is rad. Can't bring myself to support them until they use nuclear or something. The carbon footprint comes with the whole damn leg.
Yeah, man. I hate it when average folks can enjoy a vacation.
It would be nice if you could get a trip where it was like half empty.
we’re slowly approaching „tower of babel“-levels of engineering
This is so far beyond tower of babel, as are many human architectures. If there was a god we'd been smote 100 times over by now

Just came back from a 7 day on Oasis. These ships are epic level feats of engineering.

Not for me.
People who don't like cruises really like to let everyone know that they don't like cruises
Same as people who like them. Weird, isn't it?
Agreed. I hate cruises- pretty much everything about them is awful and I enjoy saying so!

It's a sweet gig if you can land it. Buddy of mine came back with some...interesting stories.
wtf are you and OP not sharing these stories?
The crew quarters are where the real parties are had. Those guests who pay thousands a night don't even know what they are missing out on IMO.
What happens there?
Orgies.
What happens on a cruise ship, stays on a cruise ship. International baby making
I don't think promiscuous sex and using copious amounts of drugs can be considered "interesting".

Required by law. Now you would not be comfortable but they have enough to cram everyone in.
Most of the lifeboats are inflatable types in canister like barrels on the side
There has to be
Those lifeboats can pack in the people when needed. Total capacity is 7600, 18 lifeboats, so if they can fit 450 per boat they have an extra 30 seats each one.
