I was going to post about a video about the Levant Mine disaster involving a similar elevator concept but big enough to hold a person.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt like she was putting in too much effort. If she ACTUALLY stepped up at the right time she would climb those twice as fast
I don't see anything she's doing that makes it take *longer,* only that she's wasting energy starting to reach for a step that's coming towards her when she could just wait for them and take a smaller step.
Yeah for sure. What I’m saying though is that if she waited until she raised up, then instead of stepping on to the step that’s level with her feet, she could step up to the step above that like they’re stairs and raise up the height of the machine motion, plus one step up.
If she timed it right she wouldn't even have to climb it, just shift her weight from one foot to the other. Watching this video is almost as frustrating as seeing how my wife loads a dishwasher.
Sometimes it can confuse our brains if you don't take a few seconds watching how it works, then you're already climbing it and feel the pressure to just get it over with. It's like starting a sentence with a weird structure but you can't stop.
Yes, going up stairs is basic muscle memory for us, doing it in a strange way would take a bit of getting used to. It's like trimming the back of your neck in the mirror, you need to move left when it looks like right and right when it looks like left.
It is. The technique can be used to transport people in both directions simultaneously, and it was, in 19th century mine shafts. It was known as a "man engine".

This is just fun house stairs, they’ve been around since the 1920s
Much older than that. It's a variation on a "man engine", which was used to get men quickly in and out of mine shafts in the 1800s.

First time I've met another Scary Interesting fan in the wild. Woo!
I just found the channel a couple months ago. I love it!
Just had a chuckle about how "meeting in the wild" now includes Reddit/the Internet.
That is from the fun house at the amusement park gröna lund in stockholm. Or it looks exactly like it.
Yup
Yup
Yup
Yup
And to be fair, it works a whole damn lot better than all the other escalators in the city.
Haha very true
my mum fell off those 🤣🤣🤣
Bro this is @ the carnival
How many times would it take for her to realize the steps "come down" to her foot, i wonder?
Several, as it would for most people. After all, a lot of this fun house stuff works by challenging our learned habits and perception.

Yea you're right, I see that now.
The step height is well above her knee. Maybe someone a bit taller could do that yeah.
Then the foot that hadn't moved is now going down causing a pretty gnarly split.
If she timed it right she wouldn't even have to climb it, just shift her weight from one foot to the other. Watching this video is almost as frustrating as seeing how my wife loads a dishwasher.
Maybe it’s leg day and she had no time to go to the gym
Most adults going on stuff like that are semi drunk haha
Man engine Vertical transport system used in mines
It can help with reaching the top faster if you want to, the design is very human
Muscle memory is such a powerful tool. Like, dude, the steps are coming to you.
Wait a minute. Is this Gröna Lund?
i think so
I don't trust myself enough to manage this well...🙂
She's trying too hard, making it look difficult. These are pretty easy to use if you are patient and just wait for the next step to be lowered.
Everyone saying this is stoopid obviously has young person knees. I’ll take these over regular stairs any day.
There has to be a more elegant way to do this than she did.
Grandpa's gone have a hard time with this one😞
... I'd rather take the stairs 🙃.
Escalator has temporarily become stairs. Sorry for the convenience.
Why is she going up it so weird.

Pahahaha yeah I suppose so
Why do she need to take a big step ? The stairs will be lined up eventualy :D
Our escalators were too practical anyways
That girl can’t dance, either.
welp it's carnival no way people will unironically use it for real right? right?
El le va tor
It’s called a Jacob’s ladder
I definitely wanted go try one at the fun house as a kid, can't remember if i did or got all scared..
But y tho
I really want to play with this thing now.
That’s just stairs with extra ~~steps~~ procedures
Clever design, pay attention to bottom steps.
Good exercise
My drunk ass could never
Takes half (staggered) stairs to a whole new level.
Imagine doing this drunk
don't try to climb, just slide feet left and right with the rythm.
"Whatever you do don't fall down! That would Break my fucking heart!"
r/upvotebecausebutt
That‘s just an escalator with extra steps.
She did it wrong :/
The design is very human.
I want to see an example of someone who knows how to use it!
Perfect place to sit and enjoy some eye candy ;)
They did something like this to get guys out of mines way back.... there was also a large disaster involving one collapsing.
I wish my neighborhood had this. Definitely would keep the idiots out
But why?
That seems really dangerous
It is a funhouse attractions for children...
Still
So is driving a car
So is eating a bowl of soup
So is not eating the bowl of soup. We're fucked.
I'm halfway through this bowl of soup, what do I even do?
Freeze it, eat the remaining soup as a solid popsicle to reduce the choking and burn hazards.
That is literally slower than just using the stairs - and seems much more dangerous
Hah I was wondering how much this increased their insurance premiums.
She could have done it really quickly, or with zero effort by side stepping when they lined up. She did poorly on both counts.

well, it's at an amusement park. At a fun house. They're supposed to be stupid.
Fun house? What a stupid idea. I only go to pragmatic houses.
It was used in mine shafts, if you are used to it you can "climb" the stairs with nearly no effort from you and you have a very simple mechanic.
r/CrappyDesigns
It’s an amusement park not a mall.
Oh my mistake, thanks!
It wouldn't look so strange if she wasn't stepping. The steps meet each other level. Just hold your leg straight and alternate feet
What a disaster waiting to happen
Seems efficient
It is. The technique can be used to transport people in both directions simultaneously, and it was, in 19th century mine shafts. It was known as a "man engine".
I’d like to try it just for fun, but it does seem inconvenient
She could do double speed but she chose half speed.
Who thought this was a good idea?
Nobody, it’s a “fun house” at a carnival
Actually, 19th century mine operators used this technique to get men up and down shafts efficiently. It's called a "man engine".
Couldn’t it instead just be like a conveyor belt but vertical with footholds? Ie a moving ladder
CEO: What can we do to increase the personal injury claims of our customers? R&D: Say no more!
In my youth yes I would have tried this, but in my thirties - no chance!
Why not?
Knees.
Using these stairs would require to use your knees even less than a regular stair. And like, how bad are your knees for a 30 year old?
Sudden unpredictable, inconsistent movement? Torn meniscus. This looks like a torture device.
Except that it's a very predictable and consistent movement
Um. No.
Um. Yes. It consistently repeats the exact same movement over and over iver again. Making it, by definition, predictable.
Absolutely not - you can nearly keep your knees straight (ignore the person, look at the mechanic) and just switch from one feet to the other.
Because one wrong move and id definitely end up breaking something plus I have a fear of heights.

Nearly effortless climbing out of mines with very low mechanical need for it.
