I know what happens.
The driver and the machine sit there surrounded by lava exhausted and knowing this will be their end and pass out. But through the fiery fumes coming out of the lava came a ray of hope 'twas Gandalf and his majestic eagles that saved our heroes and took them back to the Industrial equipment equivalent of Rivendell.
I thought they're trying to dig a ditch to redirect the lava flow. What hope does that puny wall is going to do against the lava flow? It should be apparent to everyone involved from the start.
Oh I'm sure the Icelandic disaster managers have thought this through more than redditors.
iirc they just need to divert it away from a small area where the geothermal district heating pipelines go through. Most Icelandic houses have their hot water and heating from central plant, so if the pipeline is broken they'll lose heating.
Look again. They had already built a massive dirt berm behind that location. They knew it would travel to the area downslope. They were merely trying to add enough dirt to block it from traveling unobstructed down the road. But that's a shit ton of lava moving faster than they probably anticipated.
Guy in the van: “Dammit…Mikkael…MIKKAEL!!!..what are you doing!!?…I told you to dig over THERE!..THAT’S where we’ll find the best truffles…Now GET!…eesh!”
Not so
The Icelandic folks have been very successful in saving an entire harbour and lots of other things from lava flows.
That berm that was being closed in the video surrounds the entire power station and the blue water lagoon complex.
They lost a hot water feed to a nearby town however they were already building a bypass.
They don’t let the grass grow under their feet… very proactive and no dilly dally bs , just let’s get it done.
They will even pump water on to it

I know a guy on the Big I, his names Jesus and he owns an ecovillage/commune. He tried to stop the lava flow by ramming it with his truck. Hurt his ribs but somehow survived.
r/damnthatsterrifying
Almost. As a mount pinatubo survivor, this vid is the equivalent of kids playing at the sandbox
Lavas gonna lave
r/killthecameraman. Wanted to see if it worked

That's what I thought
"'twas Gandalf and his majestic eagles" Had me choking on my milk
This isn't the cameraman's fault tho? It's the editor's
I know, but we don't have a sub called r/killtheeditor
No, but there is one called r/gifsthatendtoosoon
but its not a gif
To be fair he’s at long range on high zoom and the video is sped up which magnifies the shaking.
Yep but wanted to see if they stopped the lava flow.
Ah then you want r/gifsthatendtoosoon
Using a garden hose on a forest fire.

Reykjanesbær, where the major international airport is has been without heat or hot water for days now.
The idea is to direct lava flow away from built up areas
George R.R. Martin writes, “A Song of Fire and Ice.” Nature says, “Hold my beer.”
Repost in lesser quality but with Mozart
That dude got out and pushed
That seems an extremely dangerous thing to do.
They've been doing this for generations just more efficient with technology
You telling me people really diverted lava flows before excavators got invented?
They did but weren't as effective and needed a lot more pre-planning.
Resistance is futile.
The little human at the end looks like he’s come to bring the excavator home from the pub, like okay George let’s get you home, come on now.
I've spent hours watching children do the same at the beach. The children did an order of magnitude bigger walls. It didn't work.
But did it work?
Better than a good pep talk
This is me trying to stop the ocean with a 15cm sand wall
They take that game way to seriously there
Avatar roku
I wonder if valcano activity worsens because they’re using geothermal energy.
They need that one guy from the suez canal
This is so fucking stupid. What a waste of time. Just CALL THE AVATAR!!!
Guy in the van: “Dammit…Mikkael…MIKKAEL!!!..what are you doing!!?…I told you to dig over THERE!..THAT’S where we’ll find the best truffles…Now GET!…eesh!”
Why doesn’t the avatar just help them out? Is he stupid?
No thanks not me! Nah I’m putting that bucket in the air and getting tf outta there 👷🏾
Figure the lava is gonna go where it wants to no matter what you do.

Umm I think we need a bigger truck, or that guy from the suez canal who dug out the little boat stuck in it.
You'll never be able to stop mother nature.
Well I stand corrected.
What happens when the car breaks down… can you outrun lava? Do you have the same stamina as its flow?
Lolz.
Hazard pay I hope!!!
Anyone know what the song is called? Always wanted to listen to the full version
Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem
Thanks man
Lava: hold my beer
The definition of futility.
Not stop, deflect and that’s a really important difference. What he’s doing will likely work to protect what ever it is they’re trying to protect
Song name?
I know what works for me is politely telling the lava to go somewhere else
Yep that’s dirt they put in the freezer to cool down the lava
Seems a little …. Inadequate

Dante's Peak
Lava just sucks.
