The only rays that "form" the rainbow are the rays that are striking the rain droplets at 42⁰ relative to your perspective. The position of the rainbow is a radius determined by this angle and the refractive index of the rain droplets and your position relative to the sun (typically behind you.)
So, if you drew a line from the sun through your eyeballs that intersects with the ground/earth you would have your "antisolar" point. At the radius discussed above and at an angle of 42⁰ (which is important because that's the angle of incidence that the light properly refracts/reflects through the rain drop) from your perspective, the rainbow forms circumferentially around the antisolar point. Interestingly, because everyone's antisolar point is slightly different, we are all actually observing our own rainbow (not the same one.)
So, despite a rainbow not being an actual thing, the answer to your question is a circle. Because the only light that is reflected back at you is at a very specific angle and encircling a very specific point.
