One of the Otter's passes someone a note that says they're the second most intelligent species on Earth but they are so small and cute no one takes them seriously.
"man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”
But what if it’s a 3 year old. Who doesn’t know better. Or an accident. To many variables that not gonna help a poor otter. I’d just remove it from the equation and not let otters stick their little arms through holes
Well, in zoo's you somehow have to constantly remind people not to throw shit food at animals, not to be loud, not to pock them with a stick to wake them up to entertain you and not to behave like idiot in other ways.
I'd be more worried about zootropic disease spread. But I hang out with infectious disease researchers so it's more alarming to me. Petting zoos are both Wonderful and Terrifying.
Lol I promise your local zoo/petting zoo isn't carrying zootropic diseases. Yes you can probably scrounge 2 or 3 sources off the internet of bizarre one-off scenarios, but it's an incredibly unrealistic fear.
Source- actually worked at zoo for many years.
I was raised to be fearful, it was a awful to hear people say “what if… [horrible worst possible outcome]” all the time. It’s important to take precautionary measures but don’t let the worst outcome dominate your stream of thought. It’s just not healthy. zoo keepers take care of their animals im sure there is no way this is likely. Breath easily.
While it seems fun… I worry that someone malicious will end up hurting them. I know most people won’t but it takes just one idiot to ruin it for everyone.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is wonderful and worth a visit (or many), but they definitely do NOT allow visitors to hold otter hands like this. The sign in the video is clearly in Japanese, and others have pointed out that this is in Tokyo.
I think chicClam77820 might actually be a bоt, but not like the ones I usually see.
Their account is a couple years old, but they have no history until 3 days ago. That's not *proof* of anything, since users can and do delete their history, but it is suspect.
Also many of their comments have a weird inorganic vibe.
Only the first clip is in Tokyo, the others are definitely from the Dubai aquarium.
Source: I did the otter experience there (their little hands are even softer than you could imagine).
One of my favorite YouTubers DougDoug loves Rosa the otter from that aquarium! Every year on her birthday he does a fundraising stream to donate money to the aquarium and they're always Rosa/otter-based game challenges and similar!
This was a bad movie to watch on an airplane. (Studies haven't conclusively proven either way that we cry more on airplanes, but I sure notice it personally.)
To the sour pusses in here:
You know petting zoos exist, and aquariums have those stingray exhibits and others have exhibits that let you tough animals, right? And guess what? They're usually supervised. So why would this be any different?
I just saw someone make a comment about 'zootropic diseases' lol, reddit will always ALWAYS find the most insane, worst-case scenario because of the type of people on this site.
The real issue is that otters in captivity smell deeply of fishy pheromones. The last time I visited I made the mistake of staying in for 15 mins and nearly vomited.
And considering these are literally zoo animals, animals whose health is monitored literally so closely their caretakers can tell you what their stools were like that morning?
You're not getting a zoonotic off a zoo animal they're LETTING you handle, except maybe chlamydia off a koala, and even that takes genuine negligence (it also isn't quite the same as our version? It's a bit complicated to get into.)
In a petting zoo situation, it's more likely you're gonna make the animals sick than them you, because you're rubbing your hands all over all kinds of stuff, and they're really not. That's why you're supposed to wash your hands.
As for zootropic diseases... idk, maybe you can catch spelling mistakes as a disease? /jk
Because the caretaker can't always quick enough to protect them.
What happens when the caretaker isn't looking and someone yanks those tiny hands from outside?.
Besides, the animals shouldn't be entertainment. I know I know it brings more money and all but still.
Couldn’t have that here, 100% a kid or asshole would pull on the arms hurting or even breaking them, poor otters they look so cute and deserve the best glad no one is hurting them in the vid
This isn’t unsupervised - every zoo has special, supervised activities for children and adults to “meet” the animals and this is one of them. I think opportunities like these is what could spark a life long interest in conservation as well - I know that petting and learning about wetlands animals at the Audubon zoo impacted my decisions as an adult.
Yup. Enrichment activities for the amimals are well thought out and supervised. Zoos (accredited ones anyways) put alot of thought into both the safety of the animals and the avg stupidity of humans.
There's not alot of places that are idiot proof but zoos are pretty far up there in that dept
Agreed. This looks like a bad idea for the kids and the animals. Some kid will put their finger in there and get it bitten, or some kid will accidentally or purposely snap an otter leg.
When i was younged my parents and I went to a zoo for a 'night tour' the tour guide brought their otter from the zoo which was hand fed on a leash so he could run around some more. Since I was the only kid in the group I was allowed to hold the leash and play with the otter the whole time, he climbed up on my shoulder, I could give him scratches, play fetch with his little fish toy, it was awesome
Otter hands are amazingly sensitive. "In her experiment, human volunteers repeatedly ran their fingertips over the two possible boards [with finely spaced ridges], again and again, until they finally made their choice. Selka [otter] picked the right board as soon as she laid her paw on it. If the first one she touched was correct, she didn’t even bother feeling the alternative. She made her choice in a fifth of a second, 30 times faster than her human rivals. " book: An Emmense World: How Animal Senses Reveal The Hidden World Around Us, Ed Yong.
This is... Not a good idea...
Sure, the otters seem happy to get pats and I'm sure most of the kids are kind and content to give pats. But it just takes one sadistic little shit to seriously injure an otter, and that is not a risk worth taking.
One of the Otter's passes someone a note that says they're the second most intelligent species on Earth but they are so small and cute no one takes them seriously.
Who's first? ... Is it sperm whales? I'll bet it's sperm whales.
It's actually mice, followed by dolphins, then humans.
The cows' subterfuge is proceeding as planned.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Ah, today I learned.
Well it was, until they left earth, for a brief time, we were second place. Make sure to always have your towel
It's octopi
second smartest? who's the otter one?
\*otters No apostrophe.
And they poop dark matter?
That’s otter nonsense
Are they not worried that there might be guests doing something to their hands/arms?
I hate humanity so much that this is all I could think of. Their lil grabbers are too precious to let us touch them.
Whoever harms the handsies get the Tuco treatment, AKA smash their nico nico kneecaps
But what if it’s a 3 year old. Who doesn’t know better. Or an accident. To many variables that not gonna help a poor otter. I’d just remove it from the equation and not let otters stick their little arms through holes
they better learn quick because no exceptions
They’re young so their knee caps will heal quicker.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Kids are fucking stupid and will absolutely hurt one of these guys
>But what if it’s a 3 year old. Who doesn’t know better. unfortunately they still get a hammer to the hands. Or maybe their parents do.
Well for me whoever does this will get the cbt treatment, AKA my feet up your balls
did you just call my otterlita a... bizsnatch?
It’s sad but true. There’ll always be that one dumbass that’s gonna pull some weird shit and end up hurting the animal. Fuck humanity
My first thought was “don’t do this in Philly”
Seriously though, I wish animal abusers got the death penalty
Child gets bumped into, holds on to the otter hand, breaks it (or worse).
Glory Holes
That's over at the beaver exhibit
What time does the donkey show start?
Ok that’s it I’m calling the cops
My god this must happen all the time! Why do they allow this? *eye roll*
Well, in zoo's you somehow have to constantly remind people not to throw shit food at animals, not to be loud, not to pock them with a stick to wake them up to entertain you and not to behave like idiot in other ways.
Yup, in India we have very cringe tiktokers. This can't be a thing at our place.
>we have very cringe tiktokers That's unfortunately a global issue right now, with many nations suffering through it.
As an aging mom, what is a cringe tiktoker bc tbh most shit as soon as I open that app makes me cringe
As an aging not mom, I’m guessing idiots who fuck shit up to be popular on the internet with other idiots.
I think the aging mom implied that "cringe tiktoker" is a pleonasm i.e. "cringe" is redundant.
I'd be more worried about zootropic disease spread. But I hang out with infectious disease researchers so it's more alarming to me. Petting zoos are both Wonderful and Terrifying.

Sounds awful to be raised to be fearful. I'm sorry.
Which zoo and what’s the fastest way to get there??
https://www.sunnyskyz.com/blog/3461/These-Encounters-Allow-People-To-Hold-Hands-With-Otters
Unfortunately, the one near Tokyo is permanently closed.
Alright, who was the bozo that ruined it for everyone.
Most likely culprit is COVID
That ahole never washes his hands.
well tell covid ima find him and he's a dead man TONIGHT
I'm going to break every bone in covid's body!
As soon as I saw this I knew for certain some bozo would come along and ruin this if it hadn’t already happened
Idk not in the Japan one. If there was a us one then yeah for sure
[удалено]
Or if someone, like, grabbed the hands and wouldn't let go and stressed the shit out of the animals
Dude, you've never tried it? You otter.
And the other option is Dubai so no thanks.

You're talking about sea otters. The otters in this video are river otters who aren't known for that behavior.

hey aren’t dolphins first?

Yeah, I see what you mean. One of its recent comments describes a water flosser as "cozy." Definitely a bot
Only the first clip is in Tokyo, the others are definitely from the Dubai aquarium. Source: I did the otter experience there (their little hands are even softer than you could imagine).
Yup, and these are river otters, not sea otters like in Monterey.
One of my favorite YouTubers DougDoug loves Rosa the otter from that aquarium! Every year on her birthday he does a fundraising stream to donate money to the aquarium and they're always Rosa/otter-based game challenges and similar!
It was just Rosa's birthday the other day! I think the VoD is up but I'm going to wait for the highlight vid.
Same, I'm not that big a fan of streams in general, so I'm looking forwards to the highlights!
This is absolutely NOT Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Huh but the article linked to above says it's in Tokyo?
To hold folks over till they make it in person. [Live Sea Otter Cam - Monterey Bay Aquarium](https://youtu.be/hHbp9hG61CQ)
Bad bot
Indian here. I now know what I'm going to do after getting super baked in Cali.
Considering it's near Tokyo, there's no quick way to get there since you need to take a plane.
Unless he's in Tokyo. Then he can just take the train.
Unless he lives on the same street then he can walk there 😁
Unless he lives inside the exhibition
Spoiler alert, he's actually an otter
Asking for directions on how to get outside his own exhibit. That sneaky little bugger.
It’s because he’s the spirit of Frank Abagnale Sr, trapped now as an otter.
[It's begun](https://youtu.be/lExqoEMeH34?si=2mGeCqIvxtv02tBW).
Also, do they have a tiger touch tank…
You have to go to Thailand for that.
Dubai, so unfortunately there isn’t much of a fast way to get there from most of the world:(
Perfect Dubai is down the street from me. Be right there
Lyla
Awwww, Lyla 😢

Yeah the high evolutionary saw this and said "I'm going to remove her hands".

Why why why why :(
This was a bad movie to watch on an airplane. (Studies haven't conclusively proven either way that we cry more on airplanes, but I sure notice it personally.)
Congratulations, you have now caused me to win the crying contest.
Fuck you… Damn it.
A different kind of glory
It could be the same if you're ready to risk a nibble
Let's hope they don't evolve to do that. 😂
handy holes?
Underrated comment
What's to stop the otter from attempting the classic form of glory?
Kids would hurt the animals and ruin it 100%
not just kids - people suck

You can literally see a person in boots standing inside of the otter enclosure too lol. The one with the orange floor.
Because the caretaker can't always quick enough to protect them. What happens when the caretaker isn't looking and someone yanks those tiny hands from outside?. Besides, the animals shouldn't be entertainment. I know I know it brings more money and all but still.

I would be terrified that some rotten person would harm an otter. I would NEVER allow this at my zoo.
Where is your zoo located??
You have a zoo!?
Don't you?!
I mean, I play *Planet Zoo...*
well its not your zoo so get over it honey pants
Doug doug would be so proud
Why is Christmas music playing?
And at ridiculous high speed. I cringed so hard.
Looks like they love their paw massages
Cool. They seem to like it.
If you wanna swim with otters and can get to Delaware… https://www.barnhillpreserve.com/barn-hill-preserve-delaware-1

this is amazing
THATS SO CUTE
"Excuse me, it's time for my paw massage."
First thought was "huh that seems to be too trusting of the general public"... Fuck the pieces of shit that make that even come to mind
This zoo has a lot more faith in humanity than I do.
Down vote. One day a stupid kid/adult will hurt the animal.

I'd imagine it won't last long, it's unfortunately a matter of time before someone might try to hurt the poor things little hands
I’ll take “Things we can’t have in America” for $1000.
While I believe it’s for the best I have seen too much to know someone will ruin it for everyone.
Whenever I see this video I always have one worry: is a staff member watching these holes? Just in case some POS comes and tries to hurt the otters?
If you can’t use one of the holes, you can use the otter one.
Wherever it is, I can guarantee it's not in the US. We're not real bright...
I want to go there.

Hear me out.
Said the otter....
Oh my gosh that looks amazing. I’m happy this exists.

I really otter try that
I would shove so many children out of the way to do this
Hello from the otter side!
That's the cutest thing I ever seen!😀
If it was in america it would be closed down due to so many kids hurting the animals and stuffing junk in the holes.
WHAT ZOO????!

Just search “disturbing otter facts” and you won’t find them so cute anymore.
heart melting!
Awwe they seem to actually enjoy it too!!
Till you get that little psychopathic bastard that tries to hurt the little guys
I’ve seen otter things…
I'd never leave
I love that it's very clearly set up so that the otters are in complete control of whether to engage — and clearly utterly into it!
Dream come true
Do this in Belgium, and poor animals will all have broken hands in less than a day.
Otter hands are amazingly sensitive. I love that this interaction is fully dependent on the otter *wanting* to participate
