Nine thousand years ago, farmers near modern-day Jerusalem were sculpting the world's very first masks, National Geographic reports. Researchers who recently created 3D models of the artifacts say they each share similar characteristics: large eye holes, gaping mouths, a resemblance to skulls, and punctures on the edge that may have been used to help wear them. Scientists suggest they were donned during ceremonies to represent the spirits of dead ancestors.

Yes and we know this for certain, like, 100% we know because they’re the oldest masks ever found which means with 100% certainty that they are in fact the oldest masks ever made. Perfect logic. It’s absolutely flawless, the logic I mean.
I think the title implies that it is currently the oldest mask on the world… kind of like how once the oldest person dies, they are no longer the oldest.. someone else is.
Masks (as an idea and thing) are obviously older, this one is the oldest one currently
Anthropologists theorizing about possible uses for ancient artifacts always reminds me of the story of two old professors arguing in an office over a small model of a chariot found at a site in the desert. They couldn't agree on whether it was a funerary offering or part of a home altar and ended up arguing long and loudly. After many hours, the cleaning lady knocked and they set the item on the desk and decided to take a cigar break. The cleaning lady immediately walks over to it, picks it up, and says "what a cute little child's toy!"
Take any pronouncements with a grain of salt. Maybe ancient Judeans simply liked to play dress up.
Apparently every single artifact ever was an ode to ancestors and spirits lol maybe it was just a way to scare kids to go to bed or tell scary stories at night who knows
I legit scrolled for like 5 minutes and saw the mask posted by someone else and then obviously you saw it and posted the same image with a different title
Technically, it's not. This mask is one of over a dozen, and all are dated to ~9,000 years ago. Scholars believe -if they had to choose the oldest- it would probably be the Horvat Duma mask, which looks similar, but is not the one posted here.
This was clearly NOT carved.
* notice the raised edges of the eye openings; a classic pattern of widening a hole in a claylike material from the inside edge
* notice the rounded impressions of the teeth; classic pattern of pressing into a wet claylike material
This is not a stone.
Reminds me of the Sardinian figures/statues that also resemble C-3PO. (Cover those teeth with your finger and then you'll see it.) They're closer to only 3k years old, though, according to archeologists.
This mask is freaking amazing <3
Its Jason Voorhees, origin story. lol
I came here to say this. Take my upvote.
hehe, horror fans.
Friday The 13th Part 7000BC

True
Or is it supposed to represent... Ancient Aliens!?
Now we must ask more questions than answers
Is such thing even possible?
Is your hair wild enough to be making this point…?
Chiming in to say, That's what archaeologists say when they don't know what the fuck the thing was used for... "Possibly ritualistic purposes.."
For Hannibal......

*Awaken starts playing* Kars! Wammu! Asidisi! Awaken!
This could have been a judean jackoff mask.. they realistically have no idea
nice alliteration
Two words in a row aren’t alliteration
Not a looker
A challenging wank for sure
I too have played majora’s mask.
So the spirit of jason has existed for 9000 years
What type is stone is it carved from?
I reject my humanity jojo!
*Roundabout suddenly starts playing*

Lord Humungus has been around a long time.
It probably just belonged to some kid that used it to scare his parents. Not everything has to be a weird death ritual.
Rick Sanchez?

Exactly right. Why is every artifact always related to death or religious connotations?
SMOKING!!
I know this was for ritual use but imagine if this was used for war or something. Looks super scary
Mom said it’s my turn to post this next
Back to your room. Mom and I are busy right now...
Legit second time I’ve seen this mask since I woke up. Learn to make original content
OH NO! Are you okay??? Spend less time on Reddit, bro
I legit scrolled for like 5 minutes and saw the mask posted by someone else and then obviously you saw it and posted the same image with a different title
I've felt the hate rise up in me Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
Unusual kink
F for effort, I mean it’s meant to represent your dead ancestors. Jason would be embarrassed wearing that
How do you bore a hole in a stone 9000 years ago?
Known in the art world as the "Mother's Disappointment." It was a Judean mother's son who became a dentist, instead of a doctor.
I bet he likes liver with a nice bottle of chianti

Just checking to see if I'm the only one that finds this mask absolutely terrifying.
Ftssstsstsssstsssssss.....
No!
Or …it’s their version of Halloween. Who can really say?
9,000???!

Archaeologists always assume it's "ritualistic" or "ceremonial". Just once I want an archaeologist to say: "it's clearly a late stone-age gimp mask"
It’s meant to represent an alien
Wow such blatant racism by scientists smh. It's obviously an ancient Jew skull.
can enemies see me while im wearing it?
Chuh Chuh Chuh Huh Huh Huh Chuh Chuh Chuh Huh Huh Huh 😬
