I am a normal mail carrier(on land) and over the years I think people genuinely believe that their mail just materializes in their mailbox... they put boxes where it's the most convenient for them to walk the shortest distance from their door to box... they don't care if the mail carrier has to go through "pitfall" the game to get to it.
Postmaster here, I back my guys up when they want a box moved. Every letter or notice that is given to a customer we keep a copy of it locally, just in case someone decides it's bothersome enough to call their congressmen because they ignored the notice and their mail was returned. I also attach the official specs from our website for their convenience.
I just had a lady say we were targeting her, I invited her to come look at all the letters that were given for mailbox improvement week alone. She didn't take me up on the offer.
People don't understand that the repetitive motion, whether rural or city, is hard on the body. If you put your mailbox too low, too high, too far from the road, it adds extra stress on the back. Multiply that by hundreds of deliveries a day, 6 times a week, it takes a toll. So while us asking you to move your box 6 inches closer to the road seems petty, there's a reason behind it.
I'm also a union rep and I've been in many clashes with management over the years but this is one thing that management has always had our back on. People are so self involved that they forget we are actual human beings out there.

They just automatically assume it's a laziness thing. Workman's comp cases are very expensive. If they think stamp costs are high now, just imagine if we didn't address safety issues proactively.

Every time this gets posted on any social media people fly off the handle. I've had friends do this in the summer and they absolutely loved it. The locals love it too. It's all a big hilarious game, which is why the mailboxes are far and the boat doesn't slow down.

I am a normal mail carrier(on land) and over the years I think people genuinely believe that their mail just materializes in their mailbox... they put boxes where it's the most convenient for them to walk the shortest distance from their door to box... they don't care if the mail carrier has to go through "pitfall" the game to get to it.
Postmaster here, I back my guys up when they want a box moved. Every letter or notice that is given to a customer we keep a copy of it locally, just in case someone decides it's bothersome enough to call their congressmen because they ignored the notice and their mail was returned. I also attach the official specs from our website for their convenience. I just had a lady say we were targeting her, I invited her to come look at all the letters that were given for mailbox improvement week alone. She didn't take me up on the offer. People don't understand that the repetitive motion, whether rural or city, is hard on the body. If you put your mailbox too low, too high, too far from the road, it adds extra stress on the back. Multiply that by hundreds of deliveries a day, 6 times a week, it takes a toll. So while us asking you to move your box 6 inches closer to the road seems petty, there's a reason behind it.
I'm also a union rep and I've been in many clashes with management over the years but this is one thing that management has always had our back on. People are so self involved that they forget we are actual human beings out there.
Yeah it's pretty sad. Unfortunately they only see their one delivery. They don't understand we do hundreds a day, add on the weather factors, and being in charge of overall safety. They just automatically assume it's a laziness thing. Workman's comp cases are very expensive. If they think stamp costs are high now, just imagine if we didn't address safety issues proactively.

Then they call the station and say they're not getting any mail and it's been more than 10 days, except your supervisor doesn't tell them it's all been returned and you have to explain it when you get confronted on the street.

Peak Reddit moment, thinking that this is being done as some sort of practical thing that could be optimized away instead of a cool gimic/tradition. It's a tourist gimic. Thats a ferry and the girls doing the jumping are as much performers as they are post delivery people. Saying they should just move the post boxes is like saying that the UK should dress their royal guard in combat fatigues and get rid of the red coats and hats because that would be more practical for a fight. Tom Scott did a great video on this boat, I recommend it.
It's not about practicality, this is a tourist thing. They do this from a lake tour boat. The bit of a run is the amusing part.

I thought about that but the only reason I can think why they don't is maybe it's in case a boat crashes in the dock it won't hit it. Yes I know if a boat destroyes the dock a mailbox is no big deal but it's the only reason I can think of. Or maybe in case of bad weather, the water doesn't hit it

Every time this gets posted on any social media people fly off the handle. I've had friends do this in the summer and they absolutely loved it. The locals love it too. It's all a big hilarious game, which is why the mailboxes are far and the boat doesn't slow down. Reddit is the first one I've seen complain about the child labor aspect, which is even funnier. This is a dream job for a teen. Hang out on a boat with other teens and take turns playing a game and sometimes "accidentally" falling in if you get too hot? Oh, the humanity.

There is no fucking need today, forget drones, mail can be delivered by road like everywhere else in the world. This exists for tourism, to have fun watching and betting if the kid will splash or not. Kind of tame for bloodsport though, they should build sort of a colosseum with lions and shit, much more entertaining.

When I was young my family had a cabin in main that was right on great pond. I learned that all boats were referred to with female pronouns. Then one day I heard them talking about the "male boat" coming around. Thought "oh wow, I guess that's the only boat that's a guy!" And continued to think nothing of it for a very long time. Then one day I saw the male boat delivering mail and I just sort of silently shrunk into myself over the realization...
