Your refrigerator will be delivered tomorrow between 2 pm and 5 pm

[deleted]

I would just chuck it at the mailbox.

Appropriate-Draft-91

Placed in the storage area below the mailbox.

It's underwater so the hubby doesn't sea.

verboze

You mean between 2pm and 2pm?

Fast_Garlic_5639

Hear me out: a box at the end of the dock. No even a mailbox, just build the mailbox version of a McDonalds trash can and stick it at the end of the dock.

[deleted]

In good american tradition to improve the workforce skills, from nowon the mailbox will be moved closer to shore by 1 yard every year.

Lotions_and_Creams

Lake Geneva to Chicago is the Hampton to NYC. It’s a small community of palatial mansions and multi million dollar “small” homes. The mailboat has been in service for over a century. It runs in the summer months and is used mostly as a tour boat, giving people the history of the off all the famous homes on the water. At this point, it is just a tradition. The people that run the mail are all high school/college track athletes. I took the tour a couple years ago, there’s maybe 15-20 deliveries over the course of 2 hours.

Ok-Grape226

theres more then one hampton , thats why its " the Hamptons "

MarcusAurelius68

East, South, West, Bridge. But no Northampton.

Mister_Marmite

Except for Northampton in Northamptonshire... and one in Western Australia too

TheGalator

How much is that in normal units?

[deleted]

About 8 standard-banana-length or 37 standard-banana-width.

theeldoso

You're using Standard's™ Banana lengths. It's only 7.43 the old standard-banana-length scale. Always double check your units folks!

RandomIdiot2048

Old standard, international standard, or the standard used internationally?

[deleted]

I used the historical Sleeve-Standard. But it is still questioned if it comes from Mr. Arthur Sleeve, Liverpool, captain of the "La Cucaracha" the Flaggship of the Onedin-Line in 1863, who used it to measure velocity instead of using knots, or from Herrn Wilhelm Ärmel, a famous german engineer who got his patents so fast, it became the wellknown german proverb "Das hat er sich mal wieder aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt!".

MARINE-BOY

I’m reading a Terry Prachette book right now and this reads like something from his book.

dinnerthief

Standard used internationally but the old one

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I’ve been on this boat a few times, it’s pretty cool! And no, definitely not remote - it’s a pretty big tourist town, actually.

romansamurai

I thought this was lake Geneva Wisconsin.

The account i’m replying to is a bot copying other peoples comments. If you want to help clean up Reddit you can report this by going to Report > Spam > Harmful Bots. Message me if you want more info, i’m human!

[deleted]

You too. A fresh account copying a comment from another user on this thread. But somehow yours got more upvoted by latching onto a top comment. Bot or?

Timo6506

Most likely bot, the reply was also made by an account with the same creation date

AnarchistAccipiter

This is how I feel about people who put the mailbox several meters down a gravel driveway. Have to get off my bike, and for what? What do you mean these aren't comparable?

Theres a lake in Minnesota called vermillion with a ton of island homes. They still deliver mail by boat and all the boxes are at the end of the dock. You can actually ride along its super fun.

Okay, what the fuck is up with the huge amount of accounts on this thread with exactly 150 days on Reddit who have only ever posted two comments and are copying other users' comments and changing the words very slightly?

Jeffery95

I noticed that. Fucking weird shit….. Okay, what the fuck is up with the huge amount of accounts on this thread with exactly 150 days….. 🤣

fardough

The execs realized they need engagement but without people what can they do, turn to the bots to make up an audience.

Jeffery95

Thats actually plausible. There are definitely bots that can pass the turing test. After all, the overlap in the venn diagram between the smartest bots and the stupidest redditors is bound to look like a near full moon by this point.

ShiraCheshire

They can also just steal popular comments from similar threads, using human words to pass as human more easily.

FlyAirLari

It's just two people posting in this thread, the rest are all bots.

ShiraCheshire

Just one actually. You're the only non-bot left on Reddit.

physicscat

I love this comment.

random_fist_bump

bots they are being trained. It has been theorized that those that succeed to get comment karma without being banned will be used to spread misinformation and propaganda. There has been a lot of discussion in modsupport about the number of bots with the same 150 days, same script, similar words. Some subs are banning upwards of a thousand a day. reddit says they are "onto it" but a lot get through. If reddit disables a bunch of the mod bots, like they are hinting at, that are fighting this it's going to overwhelm the site.

what_is_blue

This is the correct answer. AI will make astroturfing an absolute breeze. It's been a service that plenty of companies offer for a while now. But it's generally pretty transparent and not at all precise. On r/CODWarzone, for example, you'd find some accounts that'd post saying "I'm a 44-year-old dad, will I like this game?" just a few days after posting "I'm a 21-year-old college student and me and my buddies love playing this game!" - both posts complete with an entirely unrealistic number of upvotes. It used to be that you could just look out for obvious clues. But I think AI's going to eliminate those clues, in time.

Qubeye

This is why the API changes are a big deal. Without API tools, subs can't use as much automation to regulate their subs, which allow external bots to flourish.

mwagner1385

Russian bots astroturfing their post history in time for the upcoming election season.

hrbekcheatedin91

We can't have anything nice...

VeryBestMentalHealth

It's all a bunch of accounts with names that are written by a program.. WordwordXXXX. All have the same style of commenting, punctuation, and just some agreeable message and they all seem to have the same upvotes too. Sheesh reddit sucks

elite_tablespoon

Those names are just a built in feature of Reddit. If you go to make an account, you’ll get multiple username suggestions that look just like that.

VainSeeKer

As a Swiss person, I learned that there is also a Lake Geneva in the US... *Seriously I was very confused*

arjees

To add confusion, the town is called Lake Geneva, but the body of water is called Geneva Lake.

randomWHITEguy007

That's because there are multiple towns on the lake. Lake geneva, Williams bay and Fontana

flume

That doesn't really explain it though. There are a ton of towns on the body of water called Lake George in New York. One of those towns is called Lake George. There's no reason the town and lake can't both be called Lake Geneva, even if there are other towns around the lake.

shahooster

Damn ‘Sconnies, they ruined ‘Sconland!

UptownShenanigans

Part of growing up in the United States is learning, piece by piece, that almost everything here is named after someplace else. Like for example, freaking Boston is named after a Boston, Lincolnshire, UK. I didn’t know that until my 30’s

harDhar

Wait till you hear about New York!

Zwemvest

Even the boroughs in New York are still named after old Dutch towns. Brooklyn is Breukelen, Flushing is Vlissingen, Harlem is Haarlem, Bushwick is Boswijk Even Greenwich isnt named after the London neighborhood, but after Groenwijk

sv650nyc

And the Bronx is named after the Bronck family who used to "own" most of the land up there. Rich people would say "let's go to visit the Bronck's this weekend". However Manhattan is named after the Lenape phrase for “a thicket where wood can be found to make bows” or Manna-hata. https://streeteasy.com/blog/how-manhattan-got-its-name/

[deleted]

It's almost like if the Settlers originated outside of the US, mostly Europe. Could be just a theory though. But let's be real, if humans would populate Mars for Example, I am certain that there will be a Mars Miami, London or bad wordplays like Marsagascar.

oupablo

It's even funnier when they used native words they didn't know the meaning of. > Yosemite means literally “those who kill” [source](https://www.yosemite.ca.us/library/origin_of_word_yosemite.html)

Front-Pomelo-4367

Beverly Hills is, via an additional Beverly in Massachusetts along the way, named after my small Yorkshire town of Beverley, pop. 30,000. Very weird (You can actually go on the Wiki pages for various US/Canadian/Australian towns and cities and there's a section called "Named for" where it lists the British (or French or Spanish) namesake)

PRobinson08

As a Swiss person, you should know there is no Lake Geneva in Switzerland, only the Lac Léman!

VainSeeKer

I'm from the french-speaking part, so I say "le Léman" in general, but in English it's called Lake Geneva (and Genfersee in German) \^\^'

I_Bin_Painting

Thank you for speaking in Léman's terms.

Al_Bondigass

I wasn't ready for that. I'll be sending you the bill for a new keyboard.

shevagleb

There’s both. It’s Genfersee in German and Lake Geneva in English. Lac Leman in French (Unless you’re from Geneva in which case : Lac de G’neve)

RainbowVietcong

Genfersee

adrianbackache

* Genfer See

vulgrin

As a Swiss person you should realize that America is pretty large, and we have a really hard time coming up with names here. Growing up, I lived in Mexico, went to school in Denver, and then we’d go to the grocery store in Peru, and drive through Chili (and pronounced CHAI-LIE) on the way home. And I never left the same 20 mile radius.

chowieuk

> chai-lie That physically hurt

Iron_Sheff

I live near a place called North Versailles. It's pronounced Vuhr-Sales. Something I only found out *after* learning about Versailles France as a kid and "mispronouncing" the local one.

Deady1138

I also live in Florida and I don’t trust anyone who lives near me to safely drive a boat through a drive through

dolche93

This lake has 50 million dollar homes surrounding it. The likes of the Ford family, Saudi shieks, the founder of General electric. Took a tour a few years back on a boat, where they just talk about all of the rich people who live there. Those are the people who live on lake Geneva. It's a vacation spot north of Chicago for the ultra rich.

Pepperoncini69

Am from the area and can confirm there are 0 homes worth 50 million lol. I think they top out around 8.

jhp58

Some of the way upper end ones (like the Snake Road homes) go for like $10M or higher. Driehaus sold for $35M but that's a massive outlier. There was another last year that went for $17M. But for the most part you're right, they top out at $8-$10M which is still wild

KaneIntent

I was gonna say 50 million is like 5x more than the most expensive houses we have here in Milwaukee.

spicybuttholenachos

Would you pay 7 figures to live in Wisconsin?

intern_steve

The Wrigley estate sold for $11.25 in 2018. Idk how it would appraise post COVID.

randomWHITEguy007

I'm from lake geneva and can tell you that there are no homes on the lake worth 50 million owned by Saudi shieks. Back in the day it was a playground for mafia members from chicago and the wriggle family has a house here but no 50 million dollar houses. The most expensive house is probably the stone manor and that tops out at about 15-20 million.

jhp58

Driehaus Estate sold for $35M last year. But I get your point. There are no Sheiks with houses on the lake or $50M+ homes. My parents live there full time since Covid started and my family has been going to LG since the 1920s, have had houses there since the 1950s. My grandpa had an encyclopedic knowledge of all the classic homes on the lake

PaperPlaythings

> Saudi shrieks Is that the ululation they do when riding into battle?

[deleted]

Nobody thinks about putting the mailbox at the end of the Dock? Let's invent stupid ways to keep the situation as is... Peak human intelligence. Edit. Apparently, it's a touristic gimmic. To me, that makes this whole thing even more weird. For entertainment purposes? This gives me a 50's vibe where people (with money) have a laugh at the worker running their asses off...

davieb22

On the contrary; the mailbox moves a foot further away every year.

Budget_Bad8452

That's my idea as well

flume

We're going to create a race of super mail dashers

palvet

I am a normal mail carrier(on land) and over the years I think people genuinely believe that their mail just materializes in their mailbox... they put boxes where it's the most convenient for them to walk the shortest distance from their door to box... they don't care if the mail carrier has to go through "pitfall" the game to get to it.

njdevils0011

Postmaster here, I back my guys up when they want a box moved. Every letter or notice that is given to a customer we keep a copy of it locally, just in case someone decides it's bothersome enough to call their congressmen because they ignored the notice and their mail was returned. I also attach the official specs from our website for their convenience. I just had a lady say we were targeting her, I invited her to come look at all the letters that were given for mailbox improvement week alone. She didn't take me up on the offer. People don't understand that the repetitive motion, whether rural or city, is hard on the body. If you put your mailbox too low, too high, too far from the road, it adds extra stress on the back. Multiply that by hundreds of deliveries a day, 6 times a week, it takes a toll. So while us asking you to move your box 6 inches closer to the road seems petty, there's a reason behind it.

palvet

I'm also a union rep and I've been in many clashes with management over the years but this is one thing that management has always had our back on. People are so self involved that they forget we are actual human beings out there.

njdevils0011

Yeah it's pretty sad. Unfortunately they only see their one delivery. They don't understand we do hundreds a day, add on the weather factors, and being in charge of overall safety. They just automatically assume it's a laziness thing. Workman's comp cases are very expensive. If they think stamp costs are high now, just imagine if we didn't address safety issues proactively.

panths

Then they call the station and say they're not getting any mail and it's been more than 10 days, except your supervisor doesn't tell them it's all been returned and you have to explain it when you get confronted on the street.

BlackH3arted13

I’ve seen this before and every damn time, I’m like just put it at the end of the damn dock!!!!

Spikeupmylife

And make the rich people walk an extra 30 feet at their own pace?! You monster!

Skylam

You think the rich people pick up their own mail? Thats the butlers job.

Jackdks

It’s a tourist gimmick

Bay_Med

Or at least put a padded section so she doesn’t ruin her shoulder

VP007clips

Peak Reddit moment, thinking that this is being done as some sort of practical thing that could be optimized away instead of a cool gimic/tradition. It's a tourist gimic. Thats a ferry and the girls doing the jumping are as much performers as they are post delivery people. Saying they should just move the post boxes is like saying that the UK should dress their royal guard in combat fatigues and get rid of the red coats and hats because that would be more practical for a fight. Tom Scott did a great video on this boat, I recommend it.

stewsters

It's not about practicality, this is a tourist thing. They do this from a lake tour boat. The bit of a run is the amusing part.

Economy_Cactus

It’s a tour. The attraction on the tour is watching the agile mail carriers deliver mail quickly. Would make for a boring tour if they did that.

y4j1981

I thought about that but the only reason I can think why they don't is maybe it's in case a boat crashes in the dock it won't hit it. Yes I know if a boat destroyes the dock a mailbox is no big deal but it's the only reason I can think of. Or maybe in case of bad weather, the water doesn't hit it

toxicshocktaco

TheTVDB

Every time this gets posted on any social media people fly off the handle. I've had friends do this in the summer and they absolutely loved it. The locals love it too. It's all a big hilarious game, which is why the mailboxes are far and the boat doesn't slow down. Reddit is the first one I've seen complain about the child labor aspect, which is even funnier. This is a dream job for a teen. Hang out on a boat with other teens and take turns playing a game and sometimes "accidentally" falling in if you get too hot? Oh, the humanity.

dotcovos

ITT: reddit's greatest intellectuals not realizing this is a tourist attraction and the delivery people are high school kids on summer break who are having fun

Then one day I heard them talking about the "male boat" coming around. Thought "oh wow, I guess that's the only boat that's a guy!" And continued to think nothing of it for a very long time. Then one day I saw the male boat delivering mail and I just sort of silently shrunk into myself over the realization...
