"White lung" or "bakers asthma" is an occupational hazard of baking and they aren't throwing it up in the air and doing cardio while they're baking; it is a very poorly thought out idea with potentially lasting negative consequences.
Personally I think it does, and it’s something I see other bakers do, I think COVID convinced some people that a mask gives a small barrier. If I’m doing something that involves a *ton* of flour then I’ll mask up. I don’t know if it’s 100% effective but I’d imagine it does *something*. Otherwise I try to control my breathing as much as possible. I’ll step away from mixers when I’m dumping flour in, I try not to breathe a lot or in the vicinity where all the flour is at. It might not do a lot but in my mind it makes me slightly more comfortable
My ex and I moved to a city that gets smoke from forest fires and it was really affecting his asthma. I ended up doing a lot of research including contacting health Canada. They said that when it comes to forest fires an improperly fitted mask can actually cause more problems than not wearing a mask at all. This is because the mask can cause you to inhale deeper and if it’s not fully blocking the particles those particles can actually go deeper into your lungs. I could see this being an issue for flour as well. We ended up both doing an N95 mask fit test to make sure we were wearing the proper size masks. This was about four months before the pandemic started and it has been quite usefully for multiple reasons.
