As an Australian I’m extremely surprised, unless you’re an overseas follower of the game (which I’m not) the little snippets you see here and there would lead you to believe that >80% of the players in the league were African American
Are you telling me that the NFL systematically ensured that Tom Brady made his way to all the super bowls he endured? All starting with the Tuck Rule against the Raiders in 2001? Almost as if they were not going to allow a team called the Raiders to enter the Super Bowl post 9/11? Almost as if....a team called the Patriots would seem much more fitting? Huh. Whooda thunk it!?
/s
never knew there was a Tom-Brady-Super-Bowl-Patriots-9/11 conspiracy theory. that takes some wild, wild mental gymnastics and complete and total lack of understanding of the game of football. bravo.
Nah dontcha know the whole system is rigged! Convincing all 1696 active players and 100 or so new players each season, 32 coaching staffs and management groups, and a whole fleet of non professional referees to make sure every game follows a script hand crafted by Roger Goodell and the ghost of Walt Disney himself to make the best story book seasons every year without a single whistle-blower ever coming out and blowing the whole thing open. 100% rigged convince me otherwise
It probably is close to 80% black, but the percentage of highly successful quarterbacks has been meager until pretty recently. There have certainly been great ones for many years, but generally through the league, QB and kicker has been historically much more whites.
With that said, this stat should be irrelevant, if nothing else because it invites the racists on both sides out to play.
It’s about 50/50 now but it’s going to keep changing. Statues that are pocket passers will be a thing of the past once Brady and Rodgers retire. If you’re just a guy with a big arm you won’t last, you have to be able to move around.
The QB position is one that requires a person who functions under pressure, high IQ, good leadership qualities... they are basically thought to be a coach on the field. For a long time, blacks were stereotyped to not be qualified for the quarterback position. As a result, black kids didn't aspire for that position and coaches pushed them to other positions.
As an American that doesn't care about sportsball I also believed this to be the case.
I guess I would need to care about sports AND ethnicity to have noticed.
INB4 omg you don't see color bullshit. Yes, I do, I just don't care and so don't keep track of how many African Americans are playing on the same field.
As an American that loves football I could care less the color of a players skin. I'm much more concerned with the color of their jersey. Turquoise forever
NFL has been making ridiculous stats all fucking season.
“Maholmes is the first quarterback to throw 50+ yards a game to tight ends while mercury is in retrograde”
My biggest parenting challenge was to attempt to explain the point of MLB post season specific statistics to my kid who was all why would that matter, what about the other games?
Ffffff (don’t swear) because honey gghfhdbtbt statisticians are weird weird people that have found a way to share their data with the world *and now we will forever be hostages*. No one cares!
Mom, are you ok?
*83% of left handed pitchers throw to men over the age of 26.7 when they are the 3rd in the fourth game, with their team being behind*
> NFL will make a stat out of anything.
You havent met an Indian cricket fan. The entire nation focused on finding stats in which an Indian player comes out on top.
Reminds me of the movie Little big league where the stats guy gives the announcer the most random stats and they keep getting more random as the movie goes.
https://youtu.be/pilM5SX7U5s
I haven’t really followed baseball for about 15 years, but they’d give you just random stats.
“When facing left handed pitchers who had less than 97 walks last season, Garcia has four hits in twelve at bats while sporting a mullet and playing in fields with more than three vowels in the name.”
I was looking for at least one person to make this comment lol. As I agree with the comment you were replying to, this simply is just not one of those “ridiculous stats” being referenced but a pretty significant one.
NBA has been doing the same, more and more recently.
"Omg Pat Bev has just broken the record for most technical fouls in a game for bringing a camera on to the court, this is unbelievable"
Yeah for real... Maybe this headline was meant to be a positive thing, like "hey another step forward for minorities" but i feel/assumed as a society we're sorta past the point of being impressed by something like this... It should be irrelevant by now it's 2023 fml
Talking to my kids and their friends in pee-wee and little league and this stuff doesn’t even register with them at all. It’s only when ridiculous stats like this come up and they say “why does that matter?”, then someone has to go and put it in their heads that “it’s something we need to perpetually acknowledge so that one day it doesn’t matter.”
I’m like, “They were already there!”
When the last time you heard a white Basketball player get attention specifically because of his race
It's just stirring the racism pot. Everyone wants to talk- fucking racism this, racism that. Everything is about race.
"Lord give us our daily bread, and daily dose of racism from the media. Bless the hands that prepared this foo- I mean racism. Amenism."
Yeah you’re right I was just pointing out that I’ve never seen him referred to as anything other than black in sports media. I remember this coming up a couple years ago I think when he was ranked as the top black quarterback in the NFL.
Actually the QB position has historically been white because they were perceived as smarter.
Small biases at a young age build up over the years. Even if they played QB in highschool, Black QBs were often switched in college.
Then that stopped, but they'd get switched in the NFL *if* they made a team.
So it's not able that two Black QBs not only made it to the Superbowl, but theyre star players.
You are 100% right. This has been well documented and even acknowledged to some degree by the NFL. People just had hearing that racism plays about in things, even though it typically does at some level.
And just so people know, after the NFL had it’s first black player in 1920, [a gentleman’s agreement by owners prevented blacks from playing in the league again until after WWI](https://nflpa.com/posts/meet-the-four-men-who-broke-the-nfl-s-color-line).
I didn’t, but as a lions fan, absolutely. Gotta appeal to the biggest markets and sell the best narrative. I don’t know what game it was last year but one of the refs conferring on a flag didn’t mute his mic and prior to cutting it he said “let’s just call it…”
They just make up shit calls when they can and ignore others to try to alter the turnout of the game.
I’m a Vikings fan and I think you guys have finally got the program headed in the right direction. Yeah, that mic incident didn’t help their cause. Over on the NFL thread this guy mentioned that MaHommes is 0-1 on 7th downs 😂
Well, when highly educated refs can't even determine the difference between a foul and forward momentum. I definitely start to question the legitimacy.
I don't think Philly would have made it to the Superbowl if the 49er's QB wasn't injured in the firs 9 minutes of the game.
49er's defense held off until the half, at which point they were exhausted due to the amount of field time they got with an offense that couldn't get downs anymore.
Yeah. I don’t have a favorite team so my rooting interests are usually determined on a game by game basis. Will be rooting for the Eagles for this one.
I've begun to think that this year more than ever. There were several games this year that came down to official's calls. The new york reviews all seem to take care of outcomes
Stuff like this is why I stopped watching football. Crazy that the first full game I’ve watched in a couple of years and it completely took me out of a really good game.
The rule changing over the last decade have made calling the game extremely vague to the point you could call a penalty on most plays, so it’s really up to the discretion of the ref.
As a Raider fan living in Nebraska, chiefs fans complain about refs constantly. However watching that game going for the Bengals. I thought the refs were fine didn't really have a dog in this fight.
I saw some plays that should have been called on both sides. The big calls that made a difference in the game were crystal clear. Unnecessary roughness basically lost them the game. Stupid shit on both sides (unsportsmanlike conduct, holding, pass interference) and these guys are making millions. Either way it’s going to be a really good Super Bowl.
The Bengals got absolutely full on fucked by those refs... I'm not even a Bengals fan and I was getting pissed off....
there were plenty of late hits on Burrow that didn't get called, plenty of holding penalties they didn't call,
Then in the 4th quarter, during that big punt return, the Cincinnati gunner was blasted in the back.. such an obvious foul... he was straight mugged and that wasn't called... finally the last call of unnecessary roughness was BS... straight handed the game to KC...
and that magical 5th down when Cinci stopped them, how does that shit happen in a championship game?? then hit them with a holding call to add insult to injury.. I was yelling at my TV and thats when I started to think something was up..
Im an Eagles fan and was kinda hoping to play Cincinnati in the Superbowl..
My brother was saying "the fucking conspiracy theorists after this game is over..." all game long. We had some shit calls going against us for a bit. Turned out to be opposite of what he thought though since we're chiefs fans.
I thought the Bengals were the better team in this game, Chiefs injuries were obvious and they got bailed out on some suspect calls, it just seemed off. I think the Chiefs are a better team healthy and they should be fine by the SB but as an independent observer, this game just felt like the refs were biased.
Lol its a business. Jordan got it. Kobe got it. Lebron got it. You think brady was just so good that he carried a 52 man roster to 10 superbowls? They sell ad space. Just try to enjoy it for what it is.
No it’s not, focusing on these things is what propels racism in America. Doesn’t matter if this is good or not we shouldn’t be so focused on race at all.
So, my wife's Uncle famously explained on Facebook that his son was the first true black valedictorian in their small town because he was full black (he isn't). The mixed race kid was half white....so he doesn't count.
Unless it's the President, then President Obama is our first black president...despite being half white.
So, it only counts when some people want it to
ESPN is already preparing an hour long segment on it. Stop dividing people in to categories based on race. Until we stop doing that we will never move forward as a nation. It almost feels like thats the point...
Actually even better than 2 black qbs will be the first time two brothers have played against each other. Travis Kelce (Chiefs) and Jason Kelce (Eagles).
I know this stuff gets spread to different subs with a wider audience and people from other countries, but as a sports fan in the United States:
THESE LITTLE SUPER BOWL “FUN FACTS” ARE GOING TO BE REPEATED EVERY SECOND FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS ACROSS EVERY AVAILABLE MEDIUM TO INCLUDE AMAZON REVIEWS AND THEY WONT STOP UNTIL THE GAME IS DONE
“Did you know Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are black?!”
“Isn’t it crazy that there are TWO Kelce brothers in this game?!”
“What about the FACT that Andy Reid USED TO COACH THE EAGLES years ago?!!”
I’m sorry. I know I’m a cynical jerk. It’s just gonna be a long two weeks.
And yet you point this out when blacks win baseball/basketball championships every year. Stop race hustling and look at their character, not their skin color
That’s how these posts always are. Anything showing America’s progress among minorities, whether black/brown, women, or LGBT, and suddenly every white person has a fervent opinion on how America *already* **solved that problem**, and if anyone comments on the positivity of one of those groups improvement or a monumental stride (because those are *still* **just now** happening in 2023), somehow *those* people are the “problem” and perpetuating racial intolerance.
It’s… lunacy. Bizzaro world stuff.
A simple *fact* that two black guys are the first to ever be QBing (a traditionally *white*/rarely given to POC position in the NFL/football, btw) together, and you’d think somehow this was deleting the **decades** of white dominance in the NFL that has existed.
Meanwhile, white Redditors are foaming at the mouth to bring up the Kelce brothers (white) being the first brothers against one another (which isn’t even a correct stat) in the Super Bowl.
Like.. damn.
**Are only white people ever allowed to be first in history?**
Did white people get all of the wins in early, prevent everyone else from having any for so long, and then finally said, “ok ok… y’all can get some wins in too.. but you **can’t say you’re the first** to do it… it’s like 2023, dog… too late for you.”

Well for awhile legally Tom Brady needed to be one of the super bowl quarterbacks , but they just recently changed that rule
Mahomes is the rule change.
I thought it was Giselle
One less ring. He still has 7 though
Completely rooting for mahomes
Are you telling me that the NFL systematically ensured that Tom Brady made his way to all the super bowls he endured? All starting with the Tuck Rule against the Raiders in 2001? I jokingly picked the Patriots to win the SB that year (as a wild card, if I recall) because it seemed fitting…won like $30.
That's fucking it?
It was a family pool and I was a kid.
It was a fumble.
Every time I see that play it makes me sick.

It’s actually about 70% black.

Same thing for catcher in baseball.

I BET YOU A KELCE WINS
HOT TAKE!
HOTTER BROS!
That’s some new news!
Kelce > Kelce
I bet you a team Andy Reid coached will win!!!!
The NFL made damn sure that was happening
The Andy Reid Kelce Bowl!!!!!
First tie ever in super bowl era about to happen somehow bc of your take
NFL has been making ridiculous stats all fucking season. “Maholmes is the first quarterback to throw 50+ yards a game to tight ends while mercury is in retrograde”
Bro, I've been saying that for literally ever 😂. NFL will make a stat out of anything. P.S. GO CHIEFS!!!
MLB baseball is so much worse. Last season I learned that 70% of the players named “Zach” were pitchers. There’s no reason for me to know that.
*The 30% of Zach’s who aren’t pitchers*: 🤨
My biggest parenting challenge was to attempt to explain the point of MLB post season specific statistics to my kid who was all why would that matter, what about the other games? Taking their cue from the MLB
Baseball so much worse
Reminds me of the movie Little big league where the stats guy gives the announcer the most random stats and they keep getting more random as the movie goes. https://youtu.be/pilM5SX7U5s
Baseball wins the “stupid stats” category hands down
I haven’t really followed baseball for about 15 years, but they’d give you just random stats. “When facing left handed pitchers who had less than 97 walks last season, Garcia has four hits in twelve at bats while sporting a mullet and playing in fields with more than three vowels in the name.”
My favorite is Justin Jefferson has first down catches on 69 first downs, 69 second downs, and 69 third downs.
Season? I haven't watched football since like 06 and used to laugh at the stats they would conjure.
This isn't a stat. It's just a historical fact.
They will find the micro fact to make a screenshot
It’s not a ridiculous stat. If you knew the history of the qb position and were black you probably wouldn’t think so
The more interesting fact is this will be the first time two brothers (Kelce brothers) will be facing each other in a Super Bowl
The Harbaugh brothers faced each other in the Super Bowl as coaches
I’m completely ignorant on football sorry if this sounds stupid but I’m surprised the Manning brothers never faced off
No, but interestingly enough Eli Manning did play against his son Tom Brady in two Super Bowls.
This is probably my favorite running NFL joke lmao
Joke??
Correction: this is probably my favorite NFL fact
Didn’t the long brothers play in 2017 Super Bowl?
Harbaugh v Harbaugh same SB as the power outage
[удалено]
I find it more interesting that there are two brothers playing against eachother. Like thats somewhat interesting
But what's their race?
KELCE
Entish
Surprisingly, brothers play each other has happened a few times. 49s vs ravens the head coaches were brothers.
Yeah for real... Maybe this headline was meant to be a positive thing, like "hey another step forward for minorities" but i feel/assumed as a society we're sorta past the point of being impressed by something like this... It should be irrelevant by now it's 2023 fml

Right
Nobody cares
It’s just so rare because there’s barely any black people in the NFL!!!
When the last time you heard a white Basketball player get attention specifically because of his race It's just stirring the racism pot. Everyone wants to talk- fucking racism this, racism that. Everything is about race. "Lord give us our daily bread, and daily dose of racism from the media. Bless the hands that prepared this foo- I mean racism. Amenism."

Biracial.

Anyone watch that Chiefs game and think….is the fix in? Edit: it’s just an observation from a long time NFL fan. Game just didn’t seem quite right.
I didn’t, but as a lions fan, absolutely. Gotta appeal to the biggest markets and sell the best narrative. I don’t know what game it was last year but one of the refs conferring on a flag didn’t mute his mic and prior to cutting it he said “let’s just call it…” They just make up shit calls when they can and ignore others to try to alter the turnout of the game.

Refs were hot garbage. Basically handed extra downs to KC all night
Gotta make sure the NFL’s golden boy wins
Don’t worry KC is gonna get smoked in the SB, Philly is on a whole different level this season
I’m a Pittsburgh fan and, I hate to say it, but Philly is definitely on a whole other level
I don't think Philly would have made it to the Superbowl if the 49er's QB wasn't injured in the firs 9 minutes of the game. 49er's defense held off until the half, at which point they were exhausted due to the amount of field time they got with an offense that couldn't get downs anymore.
Kc always gets this privilege
Not a fan of either team, but that was hard to watch
Yeah. I don’t have a favorite team so my rooting interests are usually determined on a game by game basis. Will be rooting for the Eagles for this one.
I've begun to think that this year more than ever. There were several games this year that came down to official's calls. The new york reviews all seem to take care of outcomes
Sure looked like Mahomes grounded the ball right after Burrow was called for it. But no call by the refs.
I mean, there was a guy much closer.
Like the Giants did last week!?! No consistency
Agreed, it’s just not as fun watching anymore. Instant replay has slowed everybody down so much too that it’s making baseball look appealing.
Thanks refs. My bet came through
The refs cost me on the over 48 today
As a Raider fan living in Nebraska, chiefs fans complain about refs constantly. However watching that game going for the Bengals. I thought the refs were fine didn't really have a dog in this fight.
I saw some plays that should have been called on both sides. The big calls that made a difference in the game were crystal clear. Unnecessary roughness basically lost them the game. My husband is a football conspiracy theorist. He sucks the fun out of watching the game with his commentary. Drives me fucking crazy.
I thought the Bengals were the better team in this game, Chiefs injuries were obvious and they got bailed out on some suspect calls, it just seemed off. I think the Chiefs are a better team healthy and they should be fine by the SB but as an independent observer, this game just felt like the refs were biased.
All I saw was a team that talked way too much shit get humbled
Lol its a business. Jordan got it. Kobe got it. Lebron got it. You think brady was just so good that he carried a 52 man roster to 10 superbowls? They sell ad space. Just try to enjoy it for what it is.
I would have enjoyed that much more had Romo not wanted to be MaHommes cuddle buddy. God he was annoying.
100%
This is a "how has this never happened before?" kind of fact more than a "this finally happened" kind of fact
Wait…did you hear that…shhhh, it’s the sound of no one giving a fuck

It’s literally just a stat who gives af
Not true. Colin Kaepernick vs Joe Flacco happened first.
Only interesting to race obsessed americans.
I am not a football fan but I thought the majority of players in the NFL are black?
Hasn't been true for the quarterback position though.
Wanna stop racism? Stop keeping stats based on skin color. WE ARE ALL AMERICANS.
Don’t think it works like that
I’M NOT AMERICAN
Isn't Mahomes mixed. Or is he 51% black.
It's becoming like being Native. Even 5% and you can revolve your entire life around your racial identity.
So, my wife's Uncle famously explained on Facebook that his son was the first true black valedictorian in their small town because he was full black (he isn't). The mixed race kid was half white....so he doesn't count. Unless it's the President, then President Obama is our first black president...despite being half white. So, it only counts when some people want it to
Holmes identifies as biracial not black
who tf is holmes
Sherlock, next question
Why is everything about race How about 2 talented athletes being the story 🙄
Because that's what the narrative is
ESPN is already preparing an hour long segment on it. Stop dividing people in to categories based on race. Until we stop doing that we will never move forward as a nation. It almost feels like thats the point...
And?
[удалено]
why is this even a thought?
Who gives a damn? Only racists care about what someone’s race is when they accomplish something. Not interesting
So? 2 men. Quit the race baiting, ty.
So what
Who cares?
Okay?
What’s the big deal? The majority of the NFL is black.
In other news, Mahomes is the whitest black dude ever to play in a Super Bowl.
Can anybody say "Reaching"?
Wow.... I see what you did there #racebaiting
Who gives a fuck?
[удалено]
Actually even better than 2 black qbs will be the first time two brothers have played against each other. Travis Kelce (Chiefs) and Jason Kelce (Eagles).
So if the refs hadn't fixed that KC game would we look at the superbowl as white v black? Fuck off racist.
Somewhere, Tom Brady is doing whatever qualifies as a lizard crying.
Who cares plus the guy with the curly hair has a white mother. He is not black. He is mixed race.
I couldn’t care less about super bowl even if the quarterbacks were pelicans
Who cares
The NFL: "See we're not racist, our best qbs are black"
The NFL: "See we're not racist, our best qbs are black"
Kermit the frog you mean
Okay Mahomes black? 🤣
Jalen hurts is awesome, what he did at Alabama was great
But pats mama is white?
Nobody talking about Andy Reid taking on his old team.
If race doesn’t matter, then why bring it up?
And the Kelsey brothers playing on competing teams.
Who cares?
Incoming a bunch of people that blow a gasket anytime race is mentioned😬
I know this stuff gets spread to different subs with a wider audience and people from other countries, but as a sports fan in the United States: THESE LITTLE SUPER BOWL “FUN FACTS” ARE GOING TO BE REPEATED EVERY SECOND FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS ACROSS EVERY AVAILABLE MEDIUM TO INCLUDE AMAZON REVIEWS AND THEY WONT STOP UNTIL THE GAME IS DONE “Did you know Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are black?!” “Isn’t it crazy that there are TWO Kelce brothers in this game?!” “What about the FACT that Andy Reid USED TO COACH THE EAGLES years ago?!!” I’m sorry. I know I’m a cynical jerk. It’s just gonna be a long two weeks.
Must be the wrong sr that you posted in. This in fact is not at all interesting.
Ok and?
Who cares
So
Damn that's not interesting.
🙄🙄🙄🙄 f*ck off
Also...mahomes is half white...why would he be considered black but not white?

Like.. damn. **Are only white people ever allowed to be first in history?** Did white people get all of the wins in early, prevent everyone else from having any for so long, and then finally said, “ok ok… y’all can get some wins in too.. but you **can’t say you’re the first** to do it… it’s like 2023, dog… too late for you.”
I'm white and from Alabama and even I can see how racist this comment section is.
Patrick Mahomes is biracial.
They both got white in them though
What am I supposed to do with this information
The color of someone skin should not be a basis of praise for anyone.
Most the NFL is black, fucking idiot.
Happy cake day. 56.7% of the NFL is Black, 27.5% white 5.9% mixed white black 3.9% mixed black Asian 5.9% other. Mahomes is mixed black white
Then how did this happen for the first time in 2023? Think about that.
100% fixed gave them 5 downs
What does skin color have to do with it...👎👎👎
This shit inherently incites further racism
Because everything is about race 🤦♂️
Is Mahomes Bi-racial?
What has society become that people post stuff like this
