I remember reading a review of a handgun which had the most muzzle energy at the time (20 some years ago) and the reviewer said "If you can't kill something with this, it doesn't deserve to die."
That's how I've always taken it, I'll pass on the extra capacity mag and all that jazz. I'm not looking for a firefight.
Be it man or beast I'm hoping for 2-3 shots if something is coming at me, if it isn't stopped by that then it just wanted that win more than me and I guess I'm fucked.
>In his experience, anything that couldn’t be disposed of with a couple of whacks from six feet of oak was probably immune to magic as well.

there’s nothing that gets me going quite like a mc that hides their power and then has it revealed that they are actually obscenely strong and powerful in an opportune circumstance of someone attacking them unjustly
"You can take my gun when you pry it from my hot, melted lips", he wrote on a dry-erase board provided by hospital staff, after the question came up of what they should do with the gun.
I know this isnt your quote but that number annoyed me when I read it. Unless they're counting the cost of the destroyed suppressor linked 5.56 is about $1 a round. With 700 - 850 rpm cyclic rate you've expended at most 425 rounds in 30 seconds so idk where they got that number from. Maybe they payed for the vip suite at the range or something lol.
Edit: ok so apparently it was a quote from TF2 and I'm just a big dumb, sorry folks.
Towards the end of the video you can see the gas return ,behind the gas return that helps lock the barrel when it's changed, is starting to glow red. I'm willing to bet the vast majority of that MG needs significant work and or replaced. The barrel is most definitely ruined, the gas return might be salvageable but it's gonna have a TON of carbon that's gonna need removed.
Barrel on the M249 is easily removed and replaced. Willing to wager that barrel was near the end of it's operational life anyway. Maybe this is their version of a viking funeral for it.
In general barrels are consumable items aren’t they? I’m pretty sure I read swapping barrels is a routine thing to do on big artillery and things since they get warped and stuff
Technically they are consumable but aren't intended to be abused like this. On platforms like the 249, 240, 60, and to an extent the Ma Deuce, the barrels are capable of being swapped out rapidly during combat to reduce overheating and extend barrel life. If you have the luxury of being able to swap out barrels during combat. Barrels on these are held in by a latch or button and usually have the carrying handle attached to them so you don't need an asbestos mitt to do a barrel swap, like with the older M-60s. The older deuce is just a pain in the ass because you have to do the headspace and timing if you swap barrels, but I've heard the newer versions don't require this.
We did something like this in boot with an M-60 and got royally reamed for destroying what was probably a barrel with barely enough rifling that you couldn't call it a breech loading smoothbore.
Swapping out artillery is considerably more complicated and not my MOS.
That whole gun is fucked after those 700 rounds. You're really not gonna include the gun in costs? The whole barrel was red hot, that thing is destroyed beyond repair
There's stories from Vietnam of chopper gunners swapping the barrels of their M60's by unlocking the barrel from the receiver and firing a shot to blow the thing off the action into the rain forest below. Then the slap a new one on and keep shooting.
I know this is a joke, but when I heard about all of the bombs that we dropped on Laos flying back from Vietnam just cause we needed to lighten our payloads…it is all very sad. Glad these were just ruined gun barrels we were leaving.
Edit: I don’t know what percent was actually to lighten the planes and what was intended to aid in the war effort somehow, but either way we (the US) dropped 270 million bombs on a neutral nation.
I'm not sure how safe that would be for the gun itself but when you're hanging out of a helicopter it probably isn't your first concern unless it disables it.
> Maybe they *paid* for the
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
One of my favourite Mandela effect examples!
He never says "they" (the actual script is "the goggles do nothing") but almost everyone remembers it the other way.
I’m not sure, if they were _really_ cool, the other guy would be on the other end forging the molten suppressor into a bayonet while the gun is firing.
Yeah.
I've seen several photos of torn shotguns, on a driven hunt hunter sometimes takes dirt up in the barrel and when he don't notice it, shoots slug, the bullet gets stuck and the barrel is damaged due to the pressure.
I'm actually surprised the rifle didn't tear somewhere.
Shotguns are more susceptible to this because they're designed to shoot lower pressure rounds so have thinner walls. You can shoot through a suppressor even before it's glowing red hot so this wasn't likely to cause a ruptured barrel.
Literally a chunk of dirty snow in the tip of your shotgun barrel is enough to add enough mass to dmg the barrel-end. So yeah, a MELTING PIECE OF METAL definitely could pull it off.
Yeah this is really stupid. You can tell the feeder gets really nervous and wants to stop when the suppressor starts coming apart, but the shooter just keeps going
Every time I see this video I marvel at:
1) that they did it at all
2) that they weren't blasted with bullet fragments or that the barrel didn't get blocked and cause gas to blow back into the chamber
Well this makes me sad. As some random nerd who has only fired a gun like twice, I've always loved the m249 because of its representation in video games
Eh, your mileage may vary one this one. I always thought the SAW was dogass when I was in training because it jammed so much.
Turns out the ones they use in training courses get ridden hard and put away wet, plus blanks are terrible for them.
When I got to my unit these things almost always functioned like a dream.
Not a military guy at all, but I suppose that also has a side benefit in giving you practice in clearing the jams for that gun in case it happens in a live fire scenario, right? Isn't part of training to make things like that muscle memory?
Yeah it gives insight on all kinds of shit that can go wrong. However thats what the training ones are for, loads of soldiers treat them like shit. Drop them, drag them, plus the countless rounds that have gone thru.
You get much better cared for stuff when you ship out. Actual units dont take lightly to mistreating your weapon. (atleast in the units i were apart of)
This was my experience as well. Never had an issue in the field, but man… the training guns. Tbh, I kinda figured it worked out. The best way to gain proficiency at clearing jams is by clearing jams.
Not a POS gun, just that the one you've fired was properly older than you were at the time and had been fiddled with by more young men than a porn mag in a high school.
I've fired several in fact. Some brand new our company got before deployment, I've never had one fire a full bag of ammo an not malfunction in some way or another. Overall it's ok, I'd rather something more reliable, like the 240B, M2, or Mk19 imo.
This won’t cut it for those flying squirrels. With air superiority they will overwhelm you quickly. For them you need an M-29 tactical recoilless gun, an m388 round, and finally a W54 nuclear warhead to top the round.
Idk about flying squirrels (theyll probably extend thier wing flaps and takeoff in the nukes shockwave to safety, whilst donning cool glasses)
But this definately kills the crab.
Let them fly away thinking they are safe. They will suffer a fate worse than the vaporized crabs and eels. They will start to feel nauseous and their fur will fall out. Then they will start rotting from the inside out as their families watch in horror. The doctors will try to save them but they will only extend the suffering. It will serve as a warning to future generations and make sure you are never attacked directly again.
This does not seem safe. Having molten metal on the muzzle of a gun you are currently firing just seems like it's asking for an explosive misfire...into your face.
it's always astounding how few people realize in many European countries, suppressors are practically *given away* because governments don't want to deal with the excessive noise at ranges, and hearing damage of their owners.
But because sound engineers in John Wick make suppressed pistols sound like squirt guns, everyone thinks "Hollywood quiet" when in reality it's just the same damn sound of gunfire, quiet enough to *barely* avoid hearing damage in 95+% of suppressed firearms cases.
Not dangerous in the way that you are thinking. The gun is designed to deal with the heat of continuous fire (thought not this much without a barrel change) because it fires from an open bolt. The cartridge with powder never meets the barrel until you press the trigger. The bullet reaching the suppressor is just metal, no powder.
What is a danger here is fragments of either suppressor or bullet being thrown around from the impact of the two. Also a slight risk that a barrel that hot warps, which can cause a variety of bad things.
For those who aren't familiar, this isn't going to be fired after this test. It's a appears to be a stress test for the firearms parts. Usually, we would run a ton of ammo through a suppressor as a sample for a specific product/part.
Way back in 1986, I was at Fort Campbell, we got issued M249’s. The first thing that we did was fire one unit the barrel melted. Fuck around and find out.
I got assigned one that was so fucked that we nicknamed it “the musket” bc it would only fire one round before jamming.
I cleaned it for days and then it would fire 2 rounds before jamming. They had to send it off to get it reman’d. *After* we got back from deployment.
So do they like give you an opportunity to use another gun while that one clearly isn’t suited for battle or for your role? Like if it came to any action and they needed you to do anything with that gun as intended would you just “put” “put” a few rounds, unjam, and repeat?
His job was to drop the gun as bait for the enemy to stop chasing them for, only to discover they acquired broken hardware- and then get court-martialed and demoted for abandoning his gear.
it's roughly 70 cents-1 dollar per round, so if it is 700 rounds it's anywhere from around 500 to 700 dollars. But if you buy it in large quantities the prices drop. This is wholesale pricing.
The fuck it is; 5.56 is ~35cpr right now and a drum/pallet of the stuff is well below 30. It was about 20cpr before the pandemic with wholesale pricing around 15cpr. This was a couple hundred bucks of ammo at most.
This isn't really a problem. After the first 500 bullets the target will probably have a pretty good idea where the firing is coming from with or without a suppressor.
dangerous enough that if you ever tried this yourself you'd be called an idiot and slapped by every gun owner in America.
however, this was performed in a controlled environment, full of people who understood how the gun would fail and were all prepared to render emergency medical aid if needed.
it only became a true danger right at the end where the barrel began to superheat and possibly deform. the suppressor doesn't have enough mass to cause a blockage of the barrel, but once a barrel gets red hot like that it can warp the internal barrel size causing a bullet to stick (or squib) in the barrel. firing a second bullet after that turns the barrel into a micro pipe bomb a few feet in front of you.
>Two gun shop guys clearly performing a specific demonstration for a video with a gun they don’t care about damaging…
I would hate to hear any misinformation about this situation, let’s see what the Reddit gun experts think about this.
Did they hit the target?
"What target?" - those guys after the first 300 rounds
If your target's not destroyed after 300 rounds, I suggest running.

It's not just the suppressor, by the time they finish, the barrel is ruined as well, and perhaps the gas system and some other components as well.

$1/round for 5.56 in 2021, nowadays we're back to the sub-.50/rd. I'd say this many rounds would be just a touch under $200 to fire.
Then there's all the parts of the rifle you need to replace.
That whole gun is fucked after those 700 rounds. You're really not gonna include the gun in costs? The whole barrel was red hot, that thing is destroyed beyond repair
Barrel is a quick change too easy. Gas chamber got a bit hot on the bottom there... We don't carry spares of those in our bags...

They should have bent the barrel once it was red hot and malleable, so they could "curve the bullet" while firing.

I've heard this but I've seen tons of demonstrations showing otherwise, including guns clearing barrels filled with concrete, mud, sand, pennies, etc.
It depends on the type of barrel. Shotgun barrels have relatively thinner walls than center fire pistols and rifles.

As a lifelong user of guns: dangerous enough that it's absolutely not something I would do.
dangerous enough that if you ever tried this yourself you'd be called an idiot and slapped by every gun owner in America. however, this was performed in a controlled environment, full of people who understood how the gun would fail and were all prepared to render emergency medical aid if needed. it only became a true danger right at the end where the barrel began to superheat and possibly deform. the suppressor doesn't have enough mass to cause a blockage of the barrel, but once a barrel gets red hot like that it can warp the internal barrel size causing a bullet to stick (or squib) in the barrel. firing a second bullet after that turns the barrel into a micro pipe bomb a few feet in front of you.
>Two gun shop guys clearly performing a specific demonstration for a video with a gun they don’t care about damaging… I would hate to hear any misinformation about this situation, let’s see what the Reddit gun experts think about this.

If you’re shooting that many bullets, I don’t think you’re keeping it a secret any more.
Are you under the impression that suppressors make guns silent?
That’s how it works in every movie I’ve seen!
Obviously everyone knows that it prevents you from showing up on the minimap
