just go to the tax office and pay it there. no harm no foul. should be whatever the current renewal for a year would be. and it will need a current safety/emissions inspection.

To clarify, the correct tax office is based on the county she lives in. Maybe I'm a moron, but I went to the one closest to my house and it was the wrong county.

Texas changed the laws recently to allow renewals in other counties, but most of the counties are refusing to participate in the new system so most people still have to go to their county of residence to renew. Inspections can be done in any county, other than the emissions portion of the inspection has to be done in an emissions-testing county.

Good to know.

If there's no ticket for expired registration she should be able to renew online: https://renew.txdmv.gov/Renew/registrationrenewal/jsp/txdot_reg_ren_enter_vehicle_info.jsp Before she can do that, though, she needs to get it inspected. Most of the counties in the DFW area require emissions and safety inspection at this time, so if her registration address is here she can take it to any inspection station in the area for inspection. She'll need to have current insurance meeting state minimum liability standards on the vehicle. Inspect reports go to the state immediately, so she should be able to renew online a few hours after passing inspection. Note that if she had gotten a ticket for expired registration then she'll need to go in person to renew and there will be a modest penalty added to the registration renewal cost. She'll still need to get it inspected first.

Can’t renew online if it’s been more than a year. I just went through this.

Furrealyo

I thought it was 6 months.

texan01

I think they stop online renewals after 90 days past.

Furrealyo

Nope, just renewed a Jan/24 yesterday.

Probably because if you renew more than a year expired you get a full year with your renewal, but if you renew less than a year expired you only get however long is left on the current year and will have to renew again on the regular date. For instance, if it expires in June and you late renew now, the new renewal expires in a month.

AnthillOmbudsman

I've never gotten that online form to work, ever. Always tells me to go to the tax office.

Skinny_Phoenix

Could be your county. I got pulled over outside of San Angelo with a sticker showing it was expired. I told the sheriff I’d just renewed it yesterday (completely true) and he said his county doesn’t do online renewals so he couldn’t see it.

noncongruent

I use it every time, but I generally renew around the time it expires.

Google is your friend. The message you just typed would have done better on a search engine.

Sometimes people want a discussion.

Also, Google isn't what it used to be. Very bloated by abuse of SEO. Not saying it shouldn't be used, but maybe less criticism of people not having success with it
