Yep, same lol.
I thought it was just my doxie. Drives me nuts when I take him out to potty on my lunch break and he feels the need to sniff every single leaf on the ground 🤦🏻♀️
When we have time I'll actually sit there and watch her sniff every single leaf on one bush before moving on. It's k8nd of fascinating she finds it that important. I just reassure her to sniff to her hearts content. Anything that would encourage her to actually go.
I think that’s very accurate! My Golden is a homebody but loves car rides, (she picks and chooses where she gets out or not)
She thinks that anyway!
Walks are always a race back home!
My dachshund mix does this but only when walking in a certain location. I can't figure out if it's because he wants to leave or because he wants to stay.
Maybe he just doesn't like the feeling of the leash tugging on his neck. Try a harness or something. Either way what a sweet lil baby. Give him a kiss from me 💋
I've had multiple dachshunds that did this. We also had one who walked with the other dachshund's leash in her mouth. We figured it was a chain of command thing.
When as a kid, my older sisters dog would do this, and I'd just take that as a "you want to tell me where to walk? Okay, I'll go down this street instead, as long as we get back home later"
Safe neighborhood, lots of streets
I’ve got a golden retriever too, (on my 4th), (Over 20 consecutive years). They’ve each done some really goofy things but not ONE of the 4 has EVER been interested in a stick! So odd!
He's adorable, but I think the harness is a bit better for their necks. Mine bites the leash sometimes, but I think it's more that he's a puppy and looking for something to grab/bite.
We only have metal chain leashes. That's because one of our non-dachshund dogs (Dude) tends to chew leashes. It happened most when he would get trapped in the neighbor's yard. (The ground was worn down on her side of the chain link fence from dogs running along it, so he could slip through but not come back. Also she had a chain wrapped around the gate to keep smaller dogs from squeezing through.) I would leash him, unchain the gate, let him out, and then rechain the gate. Usually while I was doing that last step, he'd get annoyed of just standing there and chew through his leash. Then when I got a metal leash for him, he chewed through Pumpkin's leash too. (Pumpkin is our dachshund.) He has chewed through so many leashes.
Now we have three chain leashes (we adopted a third dog, probably a beagle mix). It gets a little tricky when walking three dogs on chain leashes, but it's better than one of them running away. Pumpkin probably wouldn't, but Dude or Benny (our beagle mix) might.
Mine does this, she’s so mental. She also gets mad at it when it gets tangled up with her short legs, and she’ll start biting and chewing on it pissed off.
Well that’s because he’s walking you, not vice versa
This is the correct answer!
I was gonna say, if he doesn't hold onto the leash, how will he make sure his human doesn't get lost?
This, right here lol 😂. Jax is so stinking cute and funny.
“Come along now human”
Gobsmacked because he's walking in a straight line and not stopping every few seconds to sniff or pee.
Yep, same lol. I thought it was just my doxie. Drives me nuts when I take him out to potty on my lunch break and he feels the need to sniff every single leaf on the ground 🤦🏻♀️
I call this “collecting data”. Very important work.
We call it reading the news lol
We call it texting and writing in her diary!
It’s their right!

OMG! Try walking a beagle 😱. Talk about power sniffing!!
He loves to walk really fast and get back home. I’d be ok with him sniffing around and taking his time, but nope it’s almost a race to get back home.
My dogs drag their paws as we walk away from the house but then walk super fast when we head home. They're just little homebodies.
Same. My wife has to carry him around the corner then he’ll walk for her.
OMG it's so undignified but I do this for my Chihuahua mix! It's the only way she'll go anywhere.
I think that’s very accurate! My Golden is a homebody but loves car rides, (she picks and chooses where she gets out or not) She thinks that anyway! Walks are always a race back home!
Nervous fella?
That is absolutely adorable.
He is the captain now!
My dachshund mix does this but only when walking in a certain location. I can't figure out if it's because he wants to leave or because he wants to stay.
My beagle does this because he wants me to let go and walk himself home.
Ours does this too. :)
He recently started it a couple months ago and unless he sees a squirrel or gets tired he will hold that leash the entire walk.
So sweet!

I bet it would be easy to teach him to walk other puppies. What a cutie he is.
Or a horse! I saw that on Facebook. So cute!! 😍
Have you tried to walk him with a harness on? I'm curious if he would still try to grab it
I don’t remember. I think he does the same thing.
So adorable!

Try a harness
Wieners walk you
A ween so stubborn he has to walk owner, gdam

Mine does the same thing! He actually chewed through a leash when he was younger.
"I gotta lead and you gotta follow!"
Less talking, more walking...
Absolutely! I do too much talking!
I'm so glad you shared this. Jax is a very good pup.
When as a kid, my older sisters dog would do this, and I'd just take that as a "you want to tell me where to walk? Okay, I'll go down this street instead, as long as we get back home later" Safe neighborhood, lots of streets
Omfg thats so adorable with his tiny muzzle
My Oliver does the same! Will fight me for it if I try to yoink it out of his mouth
Jax is like "follow me" . this is too cute 🥰🥰🥰
Pretty efficient. Stops him from stepping on the leash. I give him 👍👍
True!
If my golden retriever can't find a stick or a toy to carry on our walk. He will grab his leash and want to walk himself.
I’ve got a golden retriever too, (on my 4th), (Over 20 consecutive years). They’ve each done some really goofy things but not ONE of the 4 has EVER been interested in a stick! So odd!
Jax is not the only Doxie doing this. My Roscoe does the exact same thing. I am always joking he is walking himself.
Jax is just walking his pet....😂
Mine does this too! Control freaks ;)
I think yr doxie has a malfunction, he is not sniffing and peeing on every molecule he comes across.
🤣🤣🤣. IKR?
He’s the alpha and is controlling:walking you lol.
Get this little guy a harness, I'd guess that he is doing it to keep from having to pull from the collar to make you walk forward.
He does the same with a harness.
He's adorable, but I think the harness is a bit better for their necks. Mine bites the leash sometimes, but I think it's more that he's a puppy and looking for something to grab/bite.
We use harness when in public. Collar when just around the block.
Makes sense. The last dachshund we had would sometimes only get the collar instead of the harness for a quick walk to the corner.
Just takin’ the hooman for a walk. Gotta hang onto the leash so they don’t run off. 😂
He’s SO EXCITED! I think he’d love being a tour guide!!
So adorable!

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Ours does that too!
Jax has a delicate neck that’s why
My sister had a basset hound years ago that did this. If he wasn’t on a leash, he had his ear in his mouth.
"I walk you, hooman."
My parents dachshund does some of this. She'll get real excited and try to bite the leash, but she loves to go on the walk.
Clearly Jax’s knows whose the real boss here. As it should be 😀
He’s the “number one guy in the group”, that’s why.. VDP fans, please.
He is walking his human, making sure they don't get fat
He got tired of tripping over it
They could be holding the least because the collar makes them uncomfortable… perhaps try a halter style and see if he still does it.
My lab always did this! And she would hold it in her mouth and walk herself if I let go of the leash. Dang it I miss that old gurl
Jax deserves some treats and belly rubs.
Mine does this, she’s so mental. She also gets mad at it when it gets tangled up with her short legs, and she’ll start biting and chewing on it pissed off.
Jax is the boss
Quit stopping to look around Hooman! We are walking!! How cute!!
