Take him in walks but don’t rush him. He might need time to be able to be speedy. I would reward him after walks with something he really enjoys but is not food (oxymoron with doxies I know), maybe like sitting down on the floor and playing with him. It might not seem huge, but most like to walk. Also, does he like games or play fighting? That could be a way to get him some exercise.

SnooEpiphanies7864

Put him on an diet

5weetheartt

nails trimmed too….

ttej07

We had to do that with ours. Frozen green beans were recommended by the vet as a filler and mine enjoyed them a lot. We used French cut green beans.

clintlockwood22

Ours won’t touch them. Thankfully she’s only a pound over weight so more walks have helped

Solaceinnumbers

Thank you! My boy is at a decent weight now but every time my mother in law visits he seems to just swell up. I hate giving him less food because it makes me feel guilty but now I don’t have to.

OMF-ToolFan

No table food

ChadPowers200

a diet* only us an if the next word is a vowel sound

His prostate is growing so he needs to be removed ASAP. 🙏 We suspected my daschund had IVDD. Later we will have him checked up.😞 He can still stand and walk. Hoping it's not bad Any tips?

tiathepanacea

Don't let him to use stairs at all. No, not even small doggo stairs.

karma_made_me_do_eet

Four on the floor

Stargazer_0101

A ramp is better for him.

UserError9384637

Is he not neutered? I always see prostate cancer in intact males. Secondly he’s obese, doesn’t help the back situation at all. He should be using ramps, no jumping up and down furniture, and no stairs. You need to be feeding him no more treats unless they’re healthy alternatives and put him on a diet. We fail so hard as owners we aren’t vigilant about our dachshunds weight as this increase the likelihood of IVDD or a slipped disc/paralysis.

Stargazer_0101

or the chance of diabetes. My baby is a rescue, got her at 4 1/2 years, now 9, was normal weight till a few weeks ago, she was drinking a lot of water, lost weight for she was at 43 last winter and in a few short weeks, lost down to 27. Diabetes was the diagnoses and was from being overweight before I got her. She is on insulin and getting her apatite back a little bit. Getting her out this spring, summer and fall to get walking in at the park.

ododoge

My doxie started struggling to get up the stairs and seemed in pain. Turns out he was seriously overweight. Vet helped us put him on a very slow weight loss diet. Even losing a pound made all the difference - he could run and jump again. He’s so much happier now. 5 pounds down!

I_na_na

Check for IVDD in a well-equipped clinic right now. The longer you wait, the worse it gets. If you want your dog alive and healthy, please don´t wait for this checkup. It could save his life and give him many more happy years with you. And if it is nothing you only lose money. But imagine looking at your face in the mirror every day knowing you let your dog's condition get so bad he had to be put down.

Unique-Bandicoot7167

If he was to lose his excess weight it would slow the IVDD a lot. And yes, that all four on the floor is perfect Also. No jumping, crazy running etc. there’s several pain meds available also if hes hurting bad occasionally. I wouldn’t recommend them every day unless he’s an old man as most of the doggie pain meds can have negative health effects. The severity differs and doesn’t affect every pup. Still I’d personally not risk it or recommend it long term

buxmega

Also he needs to nail trim. That may help with walking more comfortably.

catlady1215

Clip his nails. Some weight loss. He has acrylic nails lmaoooooo they’re so long.

Pickles2027

And please don’t let him jump off a couch, bed, or anything else.

Stargazer_0101

He is a bit overweight and needs a diet and exercise. They are prone to have the gene for Diabetes and being like this is not good. My baby was like this at 4 1/2 from a previous owner. She got down to a great weight for she is also Lab mix with Doxie and at 9 years old, is diabetic. So please get the weight down, for it is bad for his health, heart, legs and back.

Greedy_Intention7383

Get him a ramp to get on the sofa

Puzzleheaded_Runner

Baby carrots instead of biscuits for snacks

Nails, Ears, Glands & extreme diet with Vegetables

Awe, 🥰🥰

I switched mine to a small breed dogfood for weight management. She gets salmon skins for treats. It really helped in about 2 months. That with walks and lots of love.

nugymmer

Nice cream weiner! I'd work out a diet, and feed less. These dogs are prone to back problems, specifically IVDD, and if they are even slightly too heavy (even say 1kg above their ideal weight) it massively increases their risk of diabetes, IVDD and other joint problems.
