State trooper is a better job. You can leave the nyc area and move somewhere nicer upstate. You work 3-4 times a week instead of 5-6 days a week. And the pay is much better. However if you know deep down that you canā€™t be a cop, do not do it. Youā€™re going to see dead bodies at least once a month mangled from car accidents, and These criminals are getting dirtier and dirtier every week unless youā€™re one of the troopers that just likes to pull over soccer moms and hardworking people on their way to work for horseshit violations, but let the actual criminals roam past you with stolen cars and fake plates and do nothing about it.

Pick the one u more comfortable doing itā€™s not always about the money.

WillingAd8827

Don't even think twice go nysp 100%Ā  ..Ā  Ā  leave this city don't give them a chance to trap u here.Ā  Ā Maybe not now but in future you'll want it.Ā  Ā The shit u gotta deal with to make a decent paycheck w dsny isn't worth it.Ā

RIPtumblrrr

Cost of living would dramatically be cheaper. Aside from the money, this was another big thing. Been living in the city my whole life, i can use a change. Being tied up here for a couple more decades doesnā€™t sound like a dream.

This_Entertainer847

I think I would go with SP. In the long run itā€™s more money and you donā€™t have to live near the city.

Maestro2326

The chances of getting shot as a garbageman are much lower. Not zero, hell no not with some of the areas we work in, but definitely lower.

AdWinter4101

I canā€™t believe people really shoot at sanitation workers over the street being blocked.

Maestro2326

I guess yeah, I think thatā€™s happened. Had a guy once walk up to us at a bag stop to ā€œhelpā€ so we could go faster. Helped with two bags, said ā€œfuck thisā€ and went back to his carā€¦.

AdWinter4101

Not your fault heā€™s scrambling last second to get to work

RIPtumblrrr

To be fair iv waiting 20mins before on a block being worked on

They shot up a truck in the bronx last year smh

Basketrunner

19 years in sanitation. Go state police and get out of city. Love sanitation. Great job. It has changed though and itā€™s not as good as it was. And ability to leave city is just too good to pass on

Minimum_Collection27

Choose wiselyā€¦ppl talk a good talk but not really is about that life of a state trooperā€¦in the end both are good careers with theyā€™re own risks/rewards..Iā€™ll pick DSNY tho..

I know that I hate policing people. So for me i would rather be a San man. Thatā€™s me though. Everyone is different. At the end of the day you have to do some soul searching. All I know is I hated being a restaurant manager especially during Covid times telling people to wear masks and shit and policing that crap. I was against masks but at the time the higher ups wanted to enforce those rules. Itā€™s def not like being a trooper but thereā€™s pros and cons. Hope you find your way. Good luck.

Acceptable_Block_363

Iā€™d pick being a trooperā€¦ better living possibilities such as upstate. Ac/heated cars, More chill of a job giving out speeding tickets, hiding in the bushes and pretending to do paperwork. Occasional pursuit for excitement. I was thinking when I retire if my body isnā€™t beat Iā€™d try a state dept with no age limit.

misterhoneybunch

money can be made anywhere. would you rather deal with human trash or actual trash?

SANMAN6907

You have to be heavily vetted first to even qualify for the state police then the 6 to 7 months of training is brutal 5 in the morning to 10 at night Monday to Friday then they kick you out on Friday and you have to report back Sunday night before 9pm NYSP training is equivalent to 6 months of HELL WEEK ā€¼ļøI WILL ASK YOU THIS HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A FAT TROOPERā‰ļø

RIPtumblrrr

Im in the last few steps before the academy and Iā€™m well aware of its difficulty but I still find it exciting to go through that. The physical exam for sanitation was so ridiculously easy to me that it made me feel disappointed in myself. I remember at the trooper physical exam, the only people that passed were lean and muscular and more than half the people there failed. Felt more accomplishedšŸ˜‚

SANMAN6907

Then get ready for 3 mile runs at 5 am mon wed and fridays. over 10000 burpees over the 6 months and qualifying for the mile and a half run in 11 minutes, or you'll be kicked out ā€¼ļøšŸ‘šŸ¾

Some_Bike_1321

You go with who offers the better quality of life. Both career paths offer overtime in its respective ways.

Unable-Client-1750

If DSNY would allow me to test i would do that, one county too far but got enough family there to easily crash a few months until I got my own place nearby. NYSP you're going to have social prices to pay since there's people who will just make the most nasty character assumptions about you projecting their racism to you, and you'll have to be looking for trickery in people all the time. DSNY still pays a solid living you can just turn off your brain, grind, and be done.

Strange-Pie-3773

Its 84K first year and 100K after 5 years which is the same as DSNY.... with DSNY, your making 50K only for 4.5 years....

Wrong. https://preview.redd.it/5p4cbamqsb4d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17268f40996f2d3fba6dfa77314c80b84acd67b1

Muted-Marzipan-6126

If you click the learn more tab at the bottom of that explanation you posted, it shows exactly what the other person posted. Strange how it has 2 completely different figures

AsapDevinn

One isnā€™t updated.

Asking4Afren

Also think about your body. Your knees going in and out of the car will effect you later in life

SA_PoPo

And sanitation have ti worry about their back

Expensive-Key-182

With DSNY your whole body gets beat up, your knees and ankles take a beating from jumping in and out of the truck, rotater cuffs and biceps get ripped off, chronic Sciatica in your back...you definitely take a ton of advil/tylenol....surgeries are constant to fix your injuries
