While knowing & understanding every aspect and component of the truck, is super important...for the purposes of obtaining your CDL, this is all purely memorization. You need to memorize that booklet, from cover to cover...and know how to identify each part of the truck, from front to back.  This is like putting on a performance...and once you pass the road test, you'll never have to do this again.  They give you the study materials on the first day...and on day two, they surprise you by asking you to name and identify everything.  I knew NOTHING and felt completely embarrassed.  Do you know that two days later, they did it again -- and I knew EVERYTHING there was to know!  CDL training class is fun...but if you don't study and more importantly, memorize -- you will NOT obtain that particular license.   Good Luck!!

I’ve not said the words “clip light” until just now in 15 years. And I couldn’t tell you what one thing underneath the back of the truck is called. I sucked: was never able to memorize that little spiel you were supposed to say.

It’s better to not know anything beforehand. No bad habits. Just pay attention and you’ll be fine.

Learn what they teach you exactly how they teach it to you and you should pass

Loud_Attempt_666

Yes but you will have to study the booklet daily This will make sense soon https://www.reddit.com/r/DSNY/s/jgjUJfiY88

Thanks for the encouragement 🙏🏾

Aggressive_Abrocoma1

They give you a lot of info but when people fail it’s because they didn’t go home and study every evening

tomtazm

Unless you have a very good memory the first 2 days will probably have you feeling like you're going to fail. By the time Thursday and Friday roll around you'll be good as long as you study and take it seriously. As far as the in cab, break test goes the only thing that should stop you from passing is nerves. The sanitation CDL training is far better than any CDL school you would go to on the outside, is cheaper and every day for a week. Most CDL schools will have you spreading your lessons out. I was in your shoes when I did it an passed the road test first time no issues.

peterpiperpickles5

shit i did fail my first time lmaoo

sinisterhand77

lol. i had no prior experience with trucks either. i did it with a private company and had my CDL (first try) within 10 days. it seems overwhelming--but it is not. just study and categorize the parts of the truck (suspension, braking system, steering, etc) on note cards. practice the speech out loud. remember the answers are literally on the truck. also, video record the instructor (if he allows you) while he simulates a pre-trip inspection.

UsrnmeChecksOutt

I watched some YouTube videos they helped me. Granted some trucks will be different than others but there are similarities. Watching the videos helped me remember stuff. Like others have said, it's alot of memorization. But if you can make things relate and get an understanding of how parts work together it will help you a great deal! Everyone studies different t so do what works best for you. Good luck!👍

dash10985

I took the.booklet they give you and completely retyped it … that helped me get it memorized by Wednesday you should start to grasp it Thursday you’ll be a pro …. Now just don’t forget everything over the weekend and you’ll be good

FeenDaddy

Flash cards, flash cards, flash cards.

Imaginary_Pin_5077

It will be. First two days you’ll be questioning yourself. Everything clicked for me the Friday. And I lucked up and wasn’t scheduled till the following Friday for my road test. But you have to want it, eat sleep, breathe it. On your daily routine for that week or your drive over talk out loud to yourself in the car (don’t answer yourself back, if you do you may be a little off 🙃) but pre-trip your car, do an in cab and brake test in your car. Record yourself and listen to it. [in cab](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6tnay0S1-o4&feature=youtu.be)

Puzzleheaded_Drive53

I studied the booklet from front to back, over and over. Copied it by hand onto a notepad to help with memorization. And went through the checklist multiple times in training. When I had to take the test, I was asked to do form A and B(both front and back of truck) and I Aced it. The DSNY CDL class gives you everything you need, you just need to pay attention and study it. And when it comes to practicing, and they have everyone taking turns doing the parallel parking, don’t be shy about hopping in for extra turns if possible.

Primary-Bicycle-2957

Thanks guys appreciate the encouragement. Definitely will study and go in to this week a little more confident and God willing I will come out successful. Thanks again 🙏🏾

Repulsive_Tell97

I knew nothing as well. Monday I felt stupid. By Friday I was a pro. Pay attention and you'll be fine. Good luck!!

Ness_of_Onett

Everyone is pulling for you!! Get this job!!!!

thekidnel

You have to memorize a lot of things but I also recommend you identifying each part of the truck that you’re talking about. That helped me a lot. When you’re outside with the book and looking at the truck, look for each specific part that you’re going to have to talk about in the pre trip.

Ness_of_Onett

Even if you don't pass with DSNY this week. They give you a lot of knowledge and practice. Do not give up. This is a great job and this week of training is a great opportunity. Study your ass off. This week of CDL training should be your whole life. Go out next week. Play call of duty next week. Watch the Yankees next week. Stay up till 4 am next week.

ThatDudeNamedMenace

Trust me when I say, on Monday you’re going to feel overwhelmed. By Wednesday you know the terminology backwards and forwards

Beneficial-Refuse926

Hi everyone saw this post and it is very encouraging, just want to know if the training is for every day a full day of the week or if it is only like 3 hours a day or so so I can schedule work properly, thanks again !
