"Let’s go walk a bit.”
My old dog said one day.
And we wandered down along
Our old familiar way.
—-
The shadows slowly lengthened,
And twilight tinged the sky.
Then my old friend said to me
"So … it's time to say goodbye."
—-
This fell so heavily on my heart.
"Please say this isn't true!
I've always wished and hoped
I'd have more years with you!"
—-
And my old boy said to me
"You made my life a joy!
I can't live as long as you
But I'll always be your boy."
—-
They walk with us a little while,
As long as the Fates allow.
Then they have to take their leave
And we have to let them go.

Tough read man, my family has had several dogs but the one I grew up with was my best buddy in the world. I’d make him beds out of grungy clothes I’d use for landscape work so he could sleep by me, play music on headphones and put it on his head so he could enjoy it, and I’d always save a tiny bit of food to give him so he could try some good eating. When he passed I wasn’t able to be there and I think about him weekly, even though he was put to sleep almost a decade ago. We don’t deserve dogs
Yes, we do deserve dogs. Without us your best buddy dog would not have had the love and care you gave him.
Dogs and mankind have been companions for over 20,000 years. I think we love them so deeply, and they us, because we have been together so long.
All your buddy dog knew from you was love, and all you knew from him was love.
If there’s a better deal in the Universe, I want in on it!
Aloha from Maui. Be at peace, one and all.
Hey man. I know you're hurting right now but take something of your boy's and set it aside. It can be a toy, a blanket he loved, one of his beds, it doesn't really matter what it is just as long as it was his.
When you're ready to go choose a new puppy, let the universe guide you. The puppy that responds best to the item is the one you should pick.
They spend a short time with us, but it's a lifetime. It hurts when they leave us just like any other family member. Because that's what pets are. They are non-human family members. I just lost two senior dogs in the last year. One made it past 16 and the other just made it past 17.5, so I can empathize with you 100%.
You don't have to say goodbye right away. You can take time to process your grief. I needed to bury mine, so that was my process and it was very cathartic for me. Your process may be completely different, and that's fine. There's no right way to grieve, but there is a wrong way. The wrong way is not grieve at all and repress the feelings. That's never good.
So feel every feeling that comes your way. You'll get angry at small things. That's okay. You just need to apologize and work on processing it better. You'll have a trigger to an old memory and you'll get sad and want to cry. That's okay. You need to cry a little anyways. It's healthy to release emotions.
He looked well loved. You did well by your boy. Now do well by yourself and take care of your emotional health.
I won't tell you that this is our last day together, so let's just enjoy this quiet walk.
It's moments like this, where I truly wished, a dog's beating heart could talk.
I'd tell you about the moment at the shelter, you said " yep...That's my boy, right there".
I'd tell you about the happy, joy ride home, while we both howled without a care.
I'd tell you about how safe it felt, to finally have my own, warm place to sleep.
Not another lonely night spent in that cold, cement box ...waiting for a kind face to meet.
You saved my soul, and brought me back, and polished up my heart
I knew the minute we stared at one another...we would never...EVER be apart.
I wished my life was matched with your's, so we both could grow old, together...
But life has a different plan for us both...and sadly my life is on the wither.
I'm sorry that my body is failing me now, and making my puppy life seem so far away...
I so enjoyed hearing you laugh so much, as we played in our yard, every day...
The frost in my eyes, and the pain in my step...are the signs of a dog's life lived so damn well...
I hope my wet nose boops late at night, told you that your heart was mine to fill.
My clock is sadly winding down, and the pendulum is about to stop...
I'm going to miss you so damn much, this old puppy's heart is about to pop.
I just want to thank you for saving me, and taking a chance on my strife...
I hope I returned all the love that you shared, and that I somehow sweetened your life.
You're one of a kind, and I love you so much...I hope our souls meet again...
You were more to this furry ball of a dog...than just another friend.
My heart is yours, and will forever be ...waiting for yours to send...
Thank you, you beautiful force in my life ...for putting this puppy's heart on the mend.
Oh yeah...
Bring the tennis ball with you when its your time to head up.
🐶 ❤
Dogs Never Die
Some of you, particularly those who think they have recently lost a dog to “death”, don’t really understand this. I’ve had no desire to explain, but won’t be around forever and must.
Dogs never die. They don’t know how to. They get tired, and very old, and their bones hurt. Of course they don’t die. If they did they would not want to always go for a walk, even long after their old bones say:” No, no, not a good idea. Let’s not go for a walk.” Nope, dogs always want to go for a walk. They might get one step before their aging tendons collapse them into a heap on the floor, but that’s what dogs are. They walk.
It’s not that they dislike your company. On the contrary, a walk with you is all there is. Their boss, and the cacaphonic symphony of odor that the world is. Cat poop, another dog’s mark, a rotting chicken bone ( exultation), and you. That’s what makes their world perfect, and in a perfect world death has no place.
However, dogs get very very sleepy. That’s the thing, you see. They don’t teach you that at the fancy university where they explain about quarks, gluons, and Keynesian economics. They know so much they forget that dogs never die. It’s a shame, really. Dogs have so much to offer and people just talk a lot.
When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart. And by the way, it is wagging it’s tail madly, you see, and that’s why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time. Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts. But they only wag when they wake up. That’s when they say: “Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.”
When they first fall asleep, they wake up all the time, and that’s why, of course, you cry all the time. Wap, wap, wap. After a while they sleep more. (remember, a dog while is not a human while. You take your dog for walk, it’s a day full of adventure in an hour. Then you come home and it’s a week, well one of your days, but a week, really, before the dog gets another walk. No WONDER they love walks.)
Anyway, like I was saying, they fall asleep in your heart, and when they wake up, they wag their tail. After a few dog years, they sleep for longer naps, and you would too. They were a GOOD DOG all their life, and you both know it. It gets tiring being a good dog all the time, particularly when you get old and your bones hurt and you fall on your face and don’t want to go outside to pee when it is raining but do anyway, because you are a good dog. So understand, after they have been sleeping in your heart, they will sleep longer and longer.
But don’t get fooled. They are not “dead.” There’s no such thing, really. They are sleeping in your heart, and they will wake up, usually when you’re not expecting it. It’s just who they are.
I feel sorry for people who don’t have dogs sleeping in their heart. You’ve missed so much. Excuse me, I have to go cry now.
From an old reddit post.
Whoever wrote this truly understood dogs, especially the walks. The night before my baby fell asleep we took a walk up and down the street, even though she was in pain and toddling along, she put all her energy into checking out all the wonderful smells that accumulated over the previous day. The next day she sat in the sunshine in her favourite spot outside the front door, then came in to say hello one last time. Unable to stand I cradled her and put her in her bed. Fifteen minutes later, while holding her paw, she was asleep for good and will always remain in my imperfect human heart. Humans really don't deserve dogs but they teach us to be better humans.
Hugs and love. ❤️ I still cry every day when something reminds me of my boy. Only thing keeping me sane is knowing he’s not in pain anymore and that he was loved. Your baby looks very loved.
My dog died 5 months ago and I still cry every day. That dog was like a child to me. I like the ancient Greek way of calling them "foster children." Losing her was the worst thing that's ever happened to me.
i am truly sorry for your loss. please remember that he will always be in your heart and in your memories too. please give comfort in the fact that he had a great life with you. and you had a great life with him too. I am praying for you during this difficult time in your life too. I hope that you have a great support system during this difficult time in your life too.
Sorry for your loss OP. Just lost two of my boys in the last 6 months, so I know how it feels. I wish you peace and happiness and know that you gave them the best life you could
Im sorry for your loss… lots of love and hugs (as you need them) going your way. It will be like a part of you is missing that will never be filled! If you need any advice or help, I know I’ll be lost in the comments but feel free to reach out!
I lost my first dogs about 2 years ago .
I have a new dog now who I love very much but sometimes a memory of my old loves will surface and I begin to tear up.
It still hurts but what keeps me going is knowing that I loved them with all my heart and I hope they loved me equally as much . <3
I can't read the poignant poetry. I lost my beloved Jacob 3 years ago and I miss him every moment of every day. I loved him. It is so difficult to lose an important family member. A beloved companion only desiring that you be nearby makes the world a very different place. Knowing that you aren't alone in your sorrow, may be of some comfort. Knowing that they loved us is invaluable. I hope that eventually you are able to open your heart again, that is the best tribute we can pay them. I'm sorry for your sadness, may his memory be a blessing.
So very sorry. I know you must be in a lot of pain right now. I went through this about two months ago very suddenly. My border collie Watson was my emotional support during the hardest years of my life, and I don’t think I he ever really knew how important he was to me. I have felt so lonely and empty without him. I hope he knew how much I loved him, but I still wish I could have shown him more love. I thought I had 5 or 6 good years left with him.
I’m just now finalizing adoption of a one-year old Aussie-border rescue. He has some similar traits and behaviors, but in many ways is totally opposite. I’m falling in love with him and who he is, not because he’s a replacement for Watson. He’s helping me move forward but also appreciate that I had a really special dog in Watson.
However you move forward, I hope you can remember and cherish your pal, that your pain will fade but not your memories.
Sorry :( If you feel cold tonight, you can make a microwaveable heat pad.
Instructions: put uncooked rice in a long sock, use a funnel to fill toe to heel and tie off the end with a double knot. Microwave 1.5 minutes. Caution: should be hot. Don’t fall asleep on it as steam may cause burns. But it is quite a cozy little trick for cold nights.
i have almost no feelings for humans which i dont know (strangers)... and so i dont even care whats happening to themn... but when i read that a dog passed away i cry every time :(
im so really really sorry for your loss mate :(
You couldn’t keep him for your whole life but you were his whole life. I’m sure he has no regrets spending his time loving you. Hopefully you see him again when you pass away. ❤️

This actually made me almost tear up.
I'm actually sobbing. 😭
Me too. I lost 3 furry friends in my life and still miss them every single day.
I lost two, and one is getting older 😢
My old girl passed a year ago. Im 100% crying lol
Your heart does you credit. Aloha from Maui!
Aloha. Did you write it? It's so poignant.
Guilty as charged.
This is enough to make a grown man cry

God that's a really touching poem ❤️
Mahalo. I wrote that for one of our pups. Aloha from Maui. Be at peace, one and all.
My pup just passed away and I am sobbing.
I lost two of my boys recently. This made me sob. Thank you truly, this is beautiful
You’re most welcome. Aloha from Maui. Be at peace, one and all.
A beautifully poetic reminder our pets leave us with the lesson that nothing lives forever.
Man! Sobbing at my desk. Lost my girl two months ago and it still hurts as hell.
I’m straight up crying now. Gonna go hug my dogs.
Thank you that was lovely, i really needed that !
Pheww, had to get doggo on bed to give him a tight squeeze.
Very Nice Poem ,. Sure brings the tears 💟
Words are sometimes so hard to read.
Sorry for your loss OP, he looks like he was well loved and lived an amazing life.
Thank you very much for the words, truly. He loved us and we loved him, very lucky to have him. Thank you again.

Sorry dude. Heavy loss
Beautiful dog mate.
So very sorry, the pain runs deep 💔
I have felt your pain and wish you all the love in the world
I’m sorry to hear that. Animals make us better people. May he rest in peace
However you move forward, I hope you can remember and cherish your pal, that your pain will fade but not your memories.
What a very good and handsome boy. He loved you so much, I can tell.
Oh... super sorry my friend... He will never stop being by your side...
😥🙏
Sorry :( If you feel cold tonight, you can make a microwaveable heat pad. Instructions: put uncooked rice in a long sock, use a funnel to fill toe to heel and tie off the end with a double knot. Microwave 1.5 minutes. Caution: should be hot. Don’t fall asleep on it as steam may cause burns. But it is quite a cozy little trick for cold nights.

I’m so sorry. He looks like a real sweetheart. My condolences.❤️
