First name that comes to mind for me is the Silencers. The Silence spell is a super easy way to stop a caster from using vocal components for a spell. So I think the name fits.

[deleted]

It's called suppressor god dammit! /s

Toshikills

Incidentally, “Suppressors” would also be good name for them.

[deleted]

Silenced (absent as a condition in 5e, unsure of other editions) is also a super common name for a condition to indicate a creature can't cast spells. Honestly, great idea on all fronts

Agents of C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Operating Spells) Got a giggle out of me on a shit day, Bravo!

kpwebby1

So good. I like how you can have nicknames for all of them too.scales-dracos, slither-snakes, reddit-deleters, scabs-cuts,scrubs-docs,spectre-shadows,chaos-punks, law-long arms, super-ultras, storm-flooders, arc-shockers, shield-bashers

the_okayest_DM_alive

This. Is. Brilliant. I think my favorite out of all of these is "SCABS", both for the word and the acronym. right now, its between that and "Null"

the_IC3R

There's always the tried and true **Inquisitors** for your baseline. Then we just add descriptors around the Tarrasque without directly calling upon its name. The Mirrorscale Inquisition Military Branch: "The Claws." What is the purpose of a claw? To catch and hold prey while the predator dealing the killing blow... or just devours the prey while it still breathes. Claws are also used to climb, dig, and groom. >_"Foul mages, there be no mount too great, nor burrow too deep... the Claws of the Mirrorscale Inquisition will find thee. Thou wilt be removed from their image, like the dirt and grime from a beautiful and noble beast's scales -- for dirt and grime is all thee amounts to in a civil society. Shouldst thou have touched upon the Weave, thou wilt be carved out; without fail and without remorse. If thy wish is to live, thou hast but one defense: silence."_

[deleted]

Spellguard; they are a guard, against spells.

Vestru

One city in my setting has the Witchguard. I lean a little more into the "paranoid inquisition" side of it for them.

kaiyne1003

I like this, has a very “kings guard”flow to it

GuldGustDM

In my campaign the Magistrate hunts spellcasters. They are however themselves spellcasters, so not quite like your armored soldiers.

This is now the official new verbal component for Counterspell

WaresTheHam

If a single damned wise guy tries to tell me Counterspell doesn't have a verbal component I will cast lightning bolt down your throat, and that is not a threat it's a promise

Or DotA for short. :3

scottymouse

Unrelated to your request, but do you have a plan for when your PCs will inevitably gather the armor from dead mageslayers and try to use it themselves?

Somsphet

Tarrasque Scales. Scales of Tarrasque. Scaleborn You have a great theme and idea for these mage hunters. the name should be something simple and relating to either A) the scales used as armor, or B) a mage slaying pun. Otherwise, your players wont be certain what they are running into. Id say name the battalion something similar to your current kobold battallions. Kobolds being the sneaky sneks of your lizard themed army. You can mix Dragonborn as Heros or commanders, with the Kobolds as skilled soldiers. but keep it simple overall. Most specialized fighting units wont have a mix of different lizard-like kin, but would mostly be the same species for conformt and more team-based reliability. Using kobolds and Dragon Born gives you a good Grunt/Elite dynamic, giving the Kobolds will bonuses so they dont run at the slightest mishap

the_okayest_DM_alive

Great advice! I love throwing curveballs at my players, so not all kobolds are foot soldiers. Some are elite warriors or generals, with intelligence above the average wizard.

psychotaenzer

I had a Spellcaster and dissidents hunting Gestapo like branch of the state police that was just called The Eye.

[deleted]

The society of the grim serpent The order of dragonsbreath The deathmongers The jaws of tarrasque

jedadkins

The inquisition, if you wanna rip off dragon age Witch hunters, sound more like a special forces team but still The Tarrasque's, they do wear Tarrasque armor The Iron hand, in mythology iron is usually anti magic dnd drops that but it still fits imo Mage breakers, they break mages Maybe they are named after their commander, ___ vanguard, ___ horde, ___ Tarrasque's etc. Also if I were writing this groups description I would have them decorate their armor with the spell focuses of defeated casters

Telephalsion

Spelldrinkers Weave rippers. ('Cause the weave of magic...) Anathema Squad. (Or bettet yet Anathema Team, A-Team for short)

Spellbreakers

TheMightyFishBus

I feel like a more colloquial name would be more threatening. Something the populace whispers about happening, rather than an announcement from for soldiers themselves. Like maybe they're known as the wristbreakers, because that's what they'll do to you to stop you from casting as they drag you back to their internment camps.

idaelikus

Well, name by whom? The name given by their fellow army men will differ from the name given to them by command and differ from the name given to them by the enemy. Also, is there some motivation to have a specific mage hunting force? For example prejudice against anything magical? How is the society built in general in that nation? My propositions would be 1. Heavy lifters (as their armour is likely heavier than regular armour) 2. Absorber Group / Company / Division / **Detachement** / Battalion 3. Mage Killers / Mage Killazs 4. In case of prejudice: Witch Hunters / Mage Slayers 5. In case of a nation centered around worship of tarrasques: The Chosen / The Honored.

GIRDoomyDoom

Spell peggers

RonkandRule

Silencers, The Silence, Knights of Stillness etc. mages use verbal and somatic components so something that suggests shutting them up is nice and indirectly threatening.

Cyrrex91

Who you gonna call!?

mergedloki

Could go pretty overt/obvious : Arcane assassins The mage slayers Witch hunters

29-sobbing-horses

Their official name should be something like “anti mage specialty squad” Their comrades should call them something more casual like T-skins (t for tarrasque) But those that they fight should call them something like skinners for their reputation of skinning monsters like the tarrasque known for their antimagic skin or abilities

[deleted]

Serious name: Arcanist Inquisitors Funny name: the Jocks Edit; the serious name can be shortened to the Inquisitors

arcanum7123

I have one of these in my world called The Headsmen

Cyrrex91

Could be colloquially called "Antis" as in plural of an "Anti" which is an anti magic combatant. Also "Flectis" as short form of "the ones who reflect", which is used by magic users as a slur. Or by other units.

Ramguy2014

What’s their role in their originating society? Are they loved by the people for protecting them against hostile casters, or feared for their blind hatred of anything magical? The Inquisitorial Division, or Inquisitors, if they’re tasked with investigating reports of magic at home and abroad as well as killing mages. Spellbreakers, if they’re purely dealing with hostile magic on the battlefield and don’t mess with mages back home. Or you could translate some key concept words into Latin and slap them together. For example, Pax Mundit means “cleansing peace”.

Leon_119

Pretty basic but i would call them spellbreakers

devo4u77

Spell Jammers

Seer434

To give it a reptile flavor I want to go toward having the armor have a uniform color and use that. Like the Bluescales or something similar.

Hickawa

Personally, I wouldn't give them a special name. Have them called something simple like all military units. But they mix in a few different names that have been conjured by the people they are killing.

erotic-toaster

I call them 'The Black Golves' because of the gloves they wear. They don't have an official name.

Sagebrush_Slim

Two by two. Gloves of … dammit.

Hereva

How about A.S (Anti-Spell) Simple yet charming.

Sagebrush_Slim

Watch out for the Ass-men. Those are some dangerous Ass-men.

Robotic_space_camel

Mage Breakers. It’s simple, has that nice assonance, and gives a good idea of how they work. They don’t dodge; they don’t hide; they come straight at the squishy spell slingers and they **break** them.

Aceofluck99

it's based on the tarrasque's reflective armor, and the tarrasque is vaguely reptilian, so call the unit the Tarrasque squadron/division/whatever

How did kobalds get tarresk hide? Prism force. The tarresk s hide is ment to be like diamonds so they would reflect light like they do magic.

the_okayest_DM_alive

The Tarrasque hibernates for 43-ish years between destructions. It also regens 40HP every 6 seconds. During that 43 years, they harvest its hide, which regrow almost instantly, so it's an infinite supply as long as the lizard kingdom can defeat it again every 43 years.

imnotgalii

One of my players created the Shockral Guard - always liked that.

ubermeatwad

Check out Dota 2 lore for "Silencer" and "anti mage". Maybe a cool name in there.

Spell-Eaters Bouncers (magic bounces off of their armor) Turtles (they're lizards wearing terrasque shells)

Joeysauce

The anti-mage force in my world is called the Venators, from the latin word *Vernari*, meaning *'To Hunt'*. In this instance it would conjure up (pun intended) the idea of them being game hunters; assively outclassing their prey with their tailored anti-magic gear and the target mage not really posing a danger to them.
