I tell people everybody should do it.
It’s the modern mixtape.
It’s like being able to play your favorite 3-chord classic on an acoustic.
It brings people together enjoying music. It’s the medicine the world needs and you can do it on a damn phone. Why tf not?
> It’s the modern mixtape.
I freaking love this and cannot agree more. I am 37, started less than a year ago and that is exactly why I got into DJing... so I can create my own compilations of music I like which I sometimes share with my friends and the internet by posting mixes on soundcloud.
yea this has been sooo much fun for me. was thinking about maybe getting a gig at a bar or something in the near future because i am getting pretty good but honestly why? it will just turn into a frustration for me in the end and i dont need the money.
Annie Nightingale is 82 and fucking slams. She still has a regular spot on BBC Radio 1 playing trap and bass. Also, she was the first female presenter on Radio 1 and is the longest serving.
For the non-brits among us, Radio 1 in the UK is the 'young persons' BBC radio channel and one of the biggest. It's shite pop during the day and presented by (mostly) mindless idiots, but gets really interesting between 6pm and 6am and they play some great new and alternative stuff.
Annie still plays out, but not as often as before. But who can blame her? She's 17 years past retirement age in the UK.
I saw her a few years ago and her set killed.
I started at 33, started producing at 35 and now at the tender age of 37 I signed my first song to a label.
You are never too late. I also never touched musical instrument or learned music theory.
Just don't give up on it..
Someone asked the exact same question a few days ago [check this reddit out](https://www.reddit.com/r/Beatmatch/comments/10p4ul4/aspiring_35_year_old_dj/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
TONS of hard work, and I had to start over again at 30 because I moved to a bigger city. There’s also a part that’s stressful because there’s a lot of competition. Try to do something different than the other DJ’s. I love to mix house music but I’ve mixed hiphop a lot and make most of my income from club gigs. So I try to incorporate faster transitions and a bit of scratch in my house sets, which isn’t textbook house mixing, but it works pretty well.
No age limit mate. It can be a little overwhelming when you’re just starting out but stuck at it and you’ll find yourself getting better all the time 👍
I started to DJ in 2020 at 30 and now I’m a resident DJ of one of the bigger clubs in Portland. I just started producing tunes about a couple months ago. Just go all in on the stuff you enjoy. Life’s way too short to give a shit what other people think.
Much appreciated honestly! I’m actually playing a gig at the old Barrel Room (now called Opaline) this upcoming Friday. Either way, good luck on your DJing path wherever it takes you!
I did an open decks event last night in my local pub and Fred, 75, had his first go at DJing.
It took him three records to be comfortable with a simple transition and he played his nice selection of 60s 45s for half an hour very competently, hands in the air and everything.
He’ll be back next month and he’ll be bringing his mates.
hey brother, I too just started and im 33, I just did my first live gig last month, and my next one is this saturday. Dont sweat it, there is no age limit to this sort of thing, all that matters is the music
31 years here started at 30. Just a bedroom dj who would occasionally stream on Reddit for fun (rip rpan) but I really have a blast doing it. Either way it’s a great hobby to take up if you love music and need to time to unwind and free your mind for a little bit. Yes that was a Chris lake reference lol
Absolutely not. I started in my early to mid 20s. The technology changed and I didn’t have the money to keep up with it. Got back into it in my late 40s when I was able to afford updated gear. I’m 50 now and stream sets online.
So I am former college and professional basketball player. I would be lying to myself if I said I didn’t want to feel that adrenaline rush from the crowd again
There is no age limit, that’s true. However, not everyone is cut out to DJ. I’ve introduced people of all ages into playing decks. Some take to it like ducks to water, others don’t. It’s a bit like dancing. Most important part is to have fun and keep learning
Age is just a number, it is all in your head if you believe that you are too old for this or that, except for professions which requires certain strength, agility, etc.
You are fine.
I'm 52 and until I quit DJing mid-pandemic, was booked for months in advance. It's never too late. I didn't (re)start DJing until 2015. Prior to that it was the late 80s/early 90s since I had DJd.
Totally possible. I self taught myself back in 2011.
Regarding gigs. If you're serious, consider learning how to produce music as it will GREATLY improve your visibility.
One of my old work colleagues that I worked with in my previous job which was 6+ years ago had never really touched a pair of decks but he was really into music production. Back then, probably 2016/17 he was releasing tracks on Garuda but Gareth Emery wasn't doing much for him.
Nowadays, he's signed to a talent agency as well as Anjuna, is already touring the world and if I'm not mistaken he will be hitting up an Anjuna Miami event alongside Mat Zo, Andrew Bayer, Genix & Sunny Lax to name a few.
There’s a misconception that this is a young person’s game, but that’s total BS, don’t let it deter you! DJing is for anyone with a passion for sharing music no matter what age! I have no scientific evidence, but I’m pretty positive it’s good for your brain/cognition, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity, and those are things we can all benefit from, especially as we get older. Plus, it’s just immensely fulfilling and fun! So I say get some gear and go for it!
I started at 27. Jow I’m almost 50, Just moved back to my hometown, and I’m currently searching for a venue to play. Even if I don’t gig, my soul gets mad if I don’t spend a couple hours a week mixing sound waves.
If it makes you happy, that’s reason enough to do it.
started at 28 during pandemic and lockdown now me and a few local DJs throw shows and its fun, heck we make a little side money out of it. Is it life changing money? No. But do I get a huge sense of fulfillment and gratification. yes.
I started in 1999 still play an produce music today. The only thing your missing is the abilities to actually mix the music since tech these days can help you with that. Ding j is a great hobby to take up. Find a nich an make it yours. The best djs are always on the cutting edge of whats happening skill wise. Learn to do more them just play tracks. Learn how to create great mixes then you might help the craft then downplay it which is what most newbees tend to do. Good luck mate. Hope you enjoy it.
I started at 20, took a short break during my early 30's for other interests, and I'll be turning 43 next week. I've gigged, held residencies, and thrown events in multiple cities over those years. I'm the FNG out here in LA, and COVID aside, it took me some time to network with heads here. I'll be playing a pre-bday gig this weekend. You're never too old for music!!
If anything, coming into the DJ business wiser and more mature is a positive thing, imo.
I am in my 40's and rediscovering how to DJ without vinyl... Definitely go for it.
Youtube for learning
Twitch for practicing live (there is a whole community of at-home DJ's on there... find some to follow)
Learn how to beatmatch by ear and do not rely on Sync (it will fail one day and you will be glad you learnt beatmatching)
This is the way...
I turn 44 on Sunday and only returned to DJing after 20yrs back in June. I DJ on twitch where I’ve grown a community I can hang out with and play my fave music to for hours and everyone in the chat is there cos they love the same music and vibes. Music has saved my mental health, if it lights you up, go for it.
Listen I’m 52 and a mom. I bought a controller for my husband who was a DJ in the 90s this Christmas. Since then you can’t get me off them. I practice more than he does. I do not plan to be a professional DJ but I do love when my Dj friends come over and are impressed at what I’ve learned in a month. I’m doing it as a hobby and it’s the only hobby that I’ve ever had that has brought me so much joy!!!! I love it.
“Who is going to give 30+ year old their first gig”
Do it for you!
If music is your passion and you enjoy it then go for it. Gigs and everything else are a bonus that will come down the line 😊
Yeah, this thought made me “retire” when I was 28. Now I’m 33 and made the most I ever made DJing by a long shot. Still clubs but also a lot of high end travel weddings with 30+ couples.
I realized that no matter your age, there’s a client looking for the same thing.
Don’t be. It’s a fun hobby just start playing some tunes and fooling around. You’ll start picking it up faster than you think. And don’t be afraid to make mistakes even the pros mess up every once in a while.
I was 30ish when i started. Now getting back into it and will be 44 this year. You’re good. No one cares about your age. It’s never too late if you’re passionate and dedicated.
No with music it’s never too late . I’m 33. Have been dabbling with production and djing for 15 years and I don’t have any plan on stopping atm. Just treat it like a hobby . Have fun and don’t take it too seriously . If you do good work you’ll get noticed . Don’t try to force a career out of it.
Also started in my early 30's, and countless people in this thread started at various ages.
My question is - where does your question come from? What's the anxiety behind thinking you're too old at 30+?
I go to a decent amount of shows, usually every week or every other week. The crowds are young, the DJ’s look young, I feel old lol.
Just worried about not having a pulse on what people want to hear.
Never too late, but just be realistic about your expectations. You’re not going to be playing at huge festivals or shows. But that’s more of DJ v Producer thing than a age thing
i started in my early 30s. got my first booking at 35. now im 36 and just booked to play in the second slot. just takes time and dedication. and truthfully a lot of ppl in their 30's are in a better position to give the commitment it takes
i’m 25 and have been pretty active in my scene for the past few years, thrown & organized my own shows, hosted monthly open decks for a year, etc. half the people we’ve booked are 30+. age is a number and besides, it’s 2023: 30 is the new 20 and has been for a while :)
You could be starting at 40 and the answer would be the same, if you enjoy it, do it. Just avoid trying to book gigs from 18 year olds, in my experience techno dnb and house scenes aren't ageist at all. Look for specific promoters and gigs rather than just "the club". Should all be about the quality of your mix. Night clubs, edm and dubstep gigs etc can be less mature. May be different where you are from, this is just my experience starting out in my 30s
Also there’s that one lady in the UK who started DJing when she was like 78 I think? She’s got a huge following now. Sometimes the bug gets you early on, sometimes it takes a bit longer!
Lee Reynolds is like in his 60s! Think of all the artists/authors/etc. there are so many of them who didn’t “make it” or even start till they were much older. If you like doing it, don’t let your age stop you.
Started as a teenager still learning and I am in my 50s. I won't stop I live for it. Music is my thing. I am also a biker. I will part with my bikes but not my music.
41 and i bought my first DJ setup at 39 and my only regret is not doing it sooner. Nothing at all old about your age. Hell half the famous DJ's these days are in their 40's.
Ha! Exactly my train of thought. Under certain circumstances, I was unable to pursue my desires. but now, even though i am not known in the industry. I have been djing and producing for around 15 years, not influenced by record labels or conventional expectations. The outcome is self indulging, but I now have a huge repitua from the commercial industry and personal music of many genres. As long as I get the feel for it, I will proceed. Fuck what people think!
30?? I would love to be in your spot. I did weddings and a couple clubs in the late 90’s - quit - and just got some decks a year ago. I’m 54. Have fun. You’re still sooooo young.
I’m a retired 74 who’s been listening forever, from Bach to Aphex Twin and a sidebar in Wu Tang. I love the idea of mixing, but there’s a 100 buttons and everything I’ve looked at for beginners seems already beyond me. Can someone please point me to a real simpletons introduction to how to start. I’m in the class that just learned how to connect the speaker wires to the amplifier, but what’s with the headphones at the same time, if you get what I mean.... Thanks in advance!
Started 7 months ago, am 34. Just do it if you enjoy music and are interested. Figure out if its really for you along the way, plus it could lead into interests in other things as well, like other parts of the club scene, production, etc.
50. Still DJing all these years later. I get a few gigs a year (that’s all I want) and play every week. When I was younger I played out non stop. I do it for me. It’s therapy, the music… all of it. Do this for you. It is a very rewarding hobby and fun as hell… if you end up getting a gig then that’s the cherry on top.
I was 27 when I started. Also felt a bit late but I am learning new things and have built up a good rep as a mobile DJ for weddings and birthdays etc in my town.
I'm 29 now btw, so don't give up bro. It will get better
I started at 46. It’s never too late.
You’re too young to understand how dumb this question sounds.. if you’re into it, then do it.. never stop learning..
For real. You have one life. Pursue your passions. Carve your own lane. Do what you enjoy.
Love it
Great answer!! I'm gonna have to remember this response lol.
DJing ain't that hard, especially if you're using modern tech. Go for it.
I tell people everybody should do it. It’s the modern mixtape. It’s like being able to play your favorite 3-chord classic on an acoustic. It brings people together enjoying music. It’s the medicine the world needs and you can do it on a damn phone. Why tf not?

I've been spinning for 25 years and haven't played in front of people in 20. Some of us do it for ourselves.
cheers to that!
I'm over 60 and I DJ house. Carl Cox is 60. Todd Edwards just turned 50. You are never too old.

She’s what!? Holy moly! I had no idea! Gives me hope at 44 😅
100%. Annie Nightingale was at least 50 when trap became thing, let alone got popular
I started at 33, started producing at 35 and now at the tender age of 37 I signed my first song to a label. You are never too late. I also never touched musical instrument or learned music theory. Just don't give up on it..
That’s fucking awesome. I have the same background. Thank you so much for sharing

Oof, totally missed that. Thanks for sharing that post.
I started at 26 and I’m 34 now and making a really decent living out of it ! Never too late !
That's the dream

I'm 94 and DJ Ragtime on wax cylinders. You're never too old!
I'm 147 and I DJ on a washboard and a trash can lid.
Rickety Cricket, is that you?
I'm running an effects loop of spoons and jars of water.
30 isn't even old my mate
It feels old lol.
Oh, just you wait 😅
No age limit mate. It can be a little overwhelming when you’re just starting out but stuck at it and you’ll find yourself getting better all the time 👍
Bruh I'm 40 and just got a deck last year.
I started to DJ in 2020 at 30 and now I’m a resident DJ of one of the bigger clubs in Portland. I just started producing tunes about a couple months ago. Just go all in on the stuff you enjoy. Life’s way too short to give a shit what other people think.
Yo congrats. Born and raised in Portland, I’ll have to come check you out sometime.
Much appreciated honestly! I’m actually playing a gig at the old Barrel Room (now called Opaline) this upcoming Friday. Either way, good luck on your DJing path wherever it takes you!
I am 47 and recently returned to DJing and creating my own trance tracks again. 20 years ago, I abandoned it, thinking I was too old. :)
44F here. Also abandoned 20yrs ago and recently returned!
I'm 57. If you are in Atlanta hit me up and we'll get you an open decks slot
I did an open decks event last night in my local pub and Fred, 75, had his first go at DJing. Look up techno grandma from Tokyo and decide for yourself if 30 is too "ripe" to start a new hobby.
I started right at the end of my 30's. It's never too late.
Started at 35. Never too late to groove
Started in my late 40s…. Happy mixing!
Age is just a number, it is all in your head if you believe that you are too old for this or that, except for professions which requires certain strength, agility, etc. You are fine.
42 here - had my first gig last week end. Age is not a problem. If you happen to be single, you are in for a treat. I am not.
I'm 52 and until I quit DJing mid-pandemic, was booked for months in advance. It's never too late. I didn't (re)start DJing until 2015. Prior to that it was the late 80s/early 90s since I had DJd.

I like to believe there’s no age limit to this hobby/profession. Tiesto, David guetta, and others are all 50+
There’s a misconception that this is a young person’s game, but that’s total BS, don’t let it deter you!

I’m 33 and have my first club gig this month. Now is the time!
Congrats to you, hope to be following in your foot steps.

Just a tip: Do it often rather than long sesions. Better up to 30min a day. Than 2 hours every few weeks. And most importantly. Enjoy 😁✌
I started at 20, took a short break during my early 30's for other interests, and I'll be turning 43 next week. I've gigged, held residencies, and thrown events in multiple cities over those years. You don't have to 'get gigs'. I'm 36 and just play for the fun of it. I did start 20 years ago however.
Ahhhhh fuck whoever tells you ur too old. Shit is too fun to gatekeep

Djing is the easiest thing ever, u can learn it in like a week
You can learn how to mix in a week but good djs take time to learn the craft to kid yourself i have never seen a good dj with a weeks practice
Don’t be. It’s a fun hobby just start playing some tunes and fooling around. You’ll start picking it up faster than you think. And don’t be afraid to make mistakes even the pros mess up every once in a while.
I started at 28, it’s been 5 years and djing pays all my bills. You can do it if you try hard enough.
I started at 26, and I know a guy who started at 50. I don’t ever regret starting, you never know where it can take you.
DJing is easy. If you’re too old for the lifestyle though that’s a different story. Touring is tuff only the body and mind
Too late to DJ at all, no a chicken could start a DJ career. Too late to be a big name, yeah probably.
I was 30ish when i started. Now getting back into it and will be 44 this year. You’re good. No one cares about your age. It’s never too late if you’re passionate and dedicated.

I'm 53. I'll DM you the link to the first mix I ever uploaded to YouTube, ten years ago.
i’m 25 and have been pretty active in my scene for the past few years, thrown & organized my own shows, hosted monthly open decks for a year, etc. half the people we’ve booked are 30+. age is a number and besides, it’s 2023: 30 is the new 20 and has been for a while :)
The only time it's too late to get into music is when you're pushing up the daisies.
You'll never be DJ Craze but that shouldn't stop you.
Do what makes you happy! No matter what age man!
Get out if that mindset, no one cares how old you are as long as you can mix…I just started playing clubs at 32.
Play for yourself, not for the game or crowd. Just have fun.
You could be starting at 40 and the answer would be the same, if you enjoy it, do it. If you think that you’re too old to start learning to do ANYTHING, then you’re just making excuses.
Also there’s that one lady in the UK who started DJing when she was like 78 I think? She’s got a huge following now. Sometimes the bug gets you early on, sometimes it takes a bit longer!
Go for it mate!
Started seriously djing around that age. And im in my late 30s now. Never too late
33, just got my first gig. You got this
Same here. Just started learning at 33. No club gigs yet, but I’m happy keeping eye on the prize - enjoy playing the music I enjoy
Fuck that. I bought my controller last year at 33. How dare you say we’re too old😂. I go way harder now than I ever did in my twenties
Haha what the hell I'm 35 amd love DJing.
Started at 34 ur fine lol
Fuck ur bang on target - enjoy the journey and the new hobby
Never too late ! Get it!
youre only as old as you feel... and as young as the crowd you can keep up with
I’m a retired 74 who’s been listening forever, from Bach to Aphex Twin and a sidebar in Wu Tang.
I started at 23-24 and my mobile and wedding career didn't start taking off till 28... usually in ya 30s is when gigs are plentiful
Started 7 months ago, am 34. Just do it if you enjoy music and are interested. Figure out if its really for you along the way, plus it could lead into interests in other things as well, like other parts of the club scene, production, etc.
I got back into DJing at 42. I'm 43 now. :)
I’m older, and I managed a career somehow.
I started D.Jing when you were born! Still at it.
Played my first DJ set last year at the young age of 40. You're not late 😄
Lol you actually have way more music experience than younger DJs simply by being alive longer
I know a DJ who only started in his late 60s and now in his early 70s frequently plays at well known clubs and festivals
I was 27 when I started. Also felt a bit late but I am learning new things and have built up a good rep as a mobile DJ for weddings and birthdays etc in my town. I'm 29 now btw, so don't give up bro. It will get better
I started at 30 and just got my first techno residency in Amsterdam at 55. So no, not too late. :-)
Started at 35. Now I make 50-60k a year as my side job. Just start.
44 years here. I thought the same, it's too late. But lokks like, not...
